Just had a look at the latest satellite images of the lakes and things
are looking similar to last year (close, maybe a bit behind). The Red
and Winnipeg rivers are just starting to dump into the lake. Last year,
about 10 days after this began Lake Manitoba was mostly open.
I think that will be all for ice kiting for this season (even though
there are no apparent signs of ice movement, yet). The west shore at
Winnipeg Beach on Sunday had a mix of isolated ice bridges, slush
bridges and open water 1 foot to 15 foot wide. This has likely gone
worse since. The east shore (this includes Grand Beach Lagoon, Grand
Marais on the lake and lagoon side, Sunset, Pat' and Gull Lake ) was
much the same but with much wider areas of open water and fewer
slush /ice bridges. Pat' had the most open water about 20' wide the
entire length of the beach. Even if the surface on this side softened
up to be rideable, it would probably be required to wade through water
to get onto the ice :D
