REQUIRED workshop for a coaching representative from each team ...   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #388 of 2196 |
As described below, your efforts are required to keep MVLA functioning at a high level (the commersurate benefit that the kids get).  Here are the details for REQUIRED attendance by at least one of your team's coaches (all would be great) or a parent representing the coaches who will convey the information obtained.  Additional interested parents are also welcome; however, this is not designed for players.

If you haven't already forwarded the attached eMail, I encourage you to forward this eMail to your team's parents as we want everyone "on board" and aware of the goals.  This also makes it easier for you to ask for volunteers so you don't have to do it all yourselves :-)!

WHO: at least 1 but preferably all your coaches (or a parent representing the team)
WHEN: Friday June 4 from 7pm to 9pm (sign in at 6:45)
COST: Each attendee must pre-register and show-upFREE if your team is represented.  A $100 fee is assessed to the team if your team isn't represented.
PRE-REGISTRATION NO LATER THAN MAY 16: Please Email me (sergio@... in the cc) NOT a "reply all" to the distribution list with your team name and person(s) name(s) and eMail address.  Please indicate whether the person is manager/coach/parent.
WHERE: Oak School, Los Altos, 1501 Oak, Los Altos, CA, 94024
DIRECTIONS: From 85, take Fremont Ave West. Right onto Truman. Left on Oak. The school is on your
right.

We are hosting this with the Sunnyvale Alliance Soccer Club and Foothill League.  It is a Positive Coaching Alliance Workshop called the Double Goal Coach Workshop.  This workshop is targeted at coaches, assistant coaches, trainers, and managers. It is also recommended to parents who are considering any of the above roles. Players should NOT come.  You must register by May 16, so that we can order the correct number of workbooks.

The Positive Coaching Alliance is part of the Stanford University Athletic Department and has had excellent reviews from people who have attended their workshops. For more information about PCA see http://www.positivecoach.org/.

The workshop is applicable to all youth sports, but it will be tailored towards soccer. For

Workshop Highlights:
This workshop provides coaches with tools they can use to become "double-goal" coaches (coaches who want to both win AND develop the character of their players). The importance of a "players first" attitude figures heavily in this workshop, as do the messages put forth in the Positive Coach Mental Model, such as Honoring the Game and Filling Athletes' Emotional Tanks.
Learn how to work with and motivate young athletes
Learn how to help players develop skills that will contribute to their success both on and off the field
Enjoy an interactive discussion with fellow coaches and a facilitator with extensive coaching experience
Learn how to work with parents and league leaders to establish and maintain a positive competitive
environment inside youth sports

Subject: [MVLACoaches] Preparing for this year - part of your mindset to convey to the parents

A summary of some key points that you hopefully took away from my comments last night and that you convey in your dealings with your team's parents.

The "center of your universe" (focus) appears to be your child's team  A better model is to look at the Club as that "center" and your child's team as one of the planet's.  The excellent environment and training that the kids experience isn't possible without the excellence that the Club fosters.  As I've said in other forums, that excellence starts with our very excellent President Alberto Montoya - I didn't mention this last night because Alberto doesn't like when I say nice things about him :-).

Another way of looking at this write up is that it is a plan for the upcoming year and setting expectations.  We all have to "stick our oars in the water" and pull to keep the Club boat going.  I'm writing this not because we have a problem (my experience has been that the volunteering has been very good) but to set expectations since we have new teams and individuals every year.

Examples of "volunteer" efforts:

* The fields work required for laying out and relining fields
* The portion of District Cup that our League runs (could be end of October or November)
* Family and Awards Night (typically in September/October but we might do it in May/June this year)
* Generating interest in getting parents and/or players above the age of 13/14 trained as refs (training is typically in July)

Requirements you will need to satisfy are a minimum of E/D Coaching License for head coaches and F Coaching License for assistant coaches.

A new requirement discussed last night is attendance at a Positive Coaching Alliance Coaching Workshop we will be co-sponsoring with the Sunnyvale Club.  Each team is required to have at least 1 representative.  I'll send details in a separate eMail.  This is tentatively scheduled for Friday June 4th 6:30-9:30PM.  This workshop includes many tips and strategies for coaching players.  It includes setting expectations on sideline behaviors.

Thanks!

Your Loyal and Dedicated Coaching Coordinator,

Sergio Ciccolella
