Hi All,
It came to my attention today that some of the teams are gearing up
for spring play and having tryouts. I am not sure how familiar all
of you are with CIF rule 600 (outside competition) so I want to let
everyone know what the rule says. You may be putting your players
in real danger by having them participate in a tryout.
here is the Rule:
A student on a high school team becomes ineligible if the student
competes in a contest on an "outside" team in the same sport during
the high school season.
If the outside team has half or more of the team members as stated
In the National Federation rule book it shall be considered the same
sport.
Definition: Competition: Any time two teams are on the field
playing soccer, no matter what you call it. Scrimmage, practice
games, etc...
Tryouts: If a club tryout takes place during the high school season
students may tryout. HOWEVER, often some type of scrimmage occurs.
Students may not participate in such a scrimmage or they will be in
violation of rule 600 (as long as it is 6v6 orbigger) if it is 5v5
or smaller it is okay.
So, to make a long story short. If a high school player participates
in ANY type of scrimmage or game 6v6 or bigger they become
ineligible for the rest of their high school season.
Please be careful as you start up your spring seasons. Being on
both sides of this high school/club situation I know how difficult
these rules(silly, in my opinion) can be. But the bottom line is
that it is the player that gets hurt.
If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask me.
Thanks
Jim McGuirk
