I'm wanting to go to the Remenyik tournament in Evenston, Illinois the end of this month and I think Kaitlin wants to go also. I'm looking for additional people who would want to go with us so we could share the cost of gas and hotel rooms. We would need one person with a car who is comfortable driving in the city. The dates are October 23 and 24. Anyone interested?

I've book us several Fridays, which will be 2 hour sessions (mostly
drills and free fencing). I'm having technical difficulties with my
computer today, but you can find the Friday times/places on the temp
MU page (htt://students.missouri.edu/~mufence) and I will add them
to the calendar soon.

Description : Information and Entry Sheet for Oct 23-24 Remenyik Open. This
is a high-caliber event with NCAA and Olympic champions. Well organized, and
beautifully run, it is collegiate fencing at its best. Those who are interested
make sure you pre-register and communicate both to each other for caravaning and
hotel purposes but also speak with the Club Treasurer.

Hello fencers!
This is Day, your "kind and gentle" instructor. *grins* I just wanted
to say what a fabulous job everyone did last night. And to apologize
for running over time. Fencing coursework usually runs an hour and a
half (followed by an hour and half of "free fencing"), not two
hours...my bad. I hope everyone isn't too sore. Please remember to
stretch, drink lots of water (dehydration makes it worse) and take a
good hot shower or two. You'll feel much better and as time passes it
will get easier. I promise.
You were all great! I know I can be tough and demanding. *smile* For
those of you who are just beginning...you stuck it out. I noticed
NOBODY slacked off. I can already tell that some of you, if you
continue to work at this rate, are going to go far. For those of you
who HAD fenced before (and to whom I was particularly mean and picky
with) you were more than willing to rise to the occassion even though
some of you have not fenced for months or even years.
If everyone gets a chance, later this week, try some footwork or
lunges at home. It'll make your form more natural, and footwork much
easier in the long run. That is applicable to everyone, experienced or
not. In addition, the Level 1 Handout (in the Files section of this
Yahoogroup) has a lot of the information I covered last night and
might help put things perspective.
If anyone has any questions about fencing or competing or one-on-one
lessons, feel free to post to this list or write me privately. If you
have any questions about the club, equipment, meeting times or funding
by all means contact any of the officers: Jes, or Justin or Tiffany.
Our job is to make fencing fun and something you want to not just
participate in but to excel.
Good job! And I'll see everyone this coming Sunday!
Day
Fellow Fencers,
Hi all. Yahoo Groups offers us some pretty useful tools as an
organization, especially for our officers and instructor. If you are
wondering WHERE or WHEN any event is, always check the group calander
first.
Where is the calander?
When you go to the Yahoo! group page, there is always a menu on the
left-hand side. Near the bottom of it is the calander link. You can
then choose to look through it a day, week, month, even year at a time
(weeks work best for us.) Then click on the event, and it will give
you more details.
Where is the Yahoo! group page?
To even be on this list, you must have a Yahoo! account. Log on to
your "My Yahoo!", and look for the groups tab. You may have to edit
your page to include this. Then all you have to do is click on MU
Fencing, and you're there!
If anyone has any questions about how to do any of this, please send
me a private email, and I'll be glad to meet you in a pc lab some time
and step you through it.
Later everyone!
Justin Rio, Treasurer
is it at Memorial Union SOUTH??? What room? from 6pm to 10pm, right?

Subject: [MUFencing] First Practice
Alright! The MU Fencing club's first practice is almost upon us!
This Sunday at Memorial Union! (If you aren't sure or don't recall
exactly, just check the Calendar section of this yahoogroup). It
promises to be a fun and exciting time. If you have any free time
(Yeah, right...*grins*) it might be a good idea to go ahead and
download and look at the Introduction to Foil Fencing Level 1 document
from the Files section. It'll give you some background information
and a "leg up" when it comes to the first night. Although not
required, I'd also suggest printing out and bringing a copy of the
"Goals Sheet" as well.
This is fencing! Swords clashing, bodies moving with speed, grace and
precision. In truth, it isn't about who is stronger or faster or a
better athlete...it is about who is smarter. Fencing is chess, at 90
miles per hour! MU fencing actually has a long history of
sportsmanship, community and good solid competitive fencing.
Did you know:
1. In any Olympic sport, with exception of the bullet in shooting,
nothing moves faster than the tip of a fencing blade.
2. MU Fencing's slogan is/was: Avec Fierte. Meaning "With Pride."
3. Fencing uniforms are white because historically there was no way
to tell when someone hit (it went so fast) so the tips of the weapons
were dipped in red ink which would show up on the white uniform.
4. MU fencing has hosted a "Fence for Food" tournament supporting the
Mid-Missouri Food bank, raising donations of several dozens of cans of
food and hundreds of dollars every year.
5. At one point in time there was serious discussion about Women's
Fencing at MU applying for Varsity status.
6. Women's Fencing at MU has held several state titles for multiple
years in a row, particularily in foil.
7. The MU Men's Epee team placed 8th at the U.S. Fencing Nationals.
8. MU beginning fencers have a reputation for good sportsmanship, an
enthusiastic attitude, solid fencing and a fierce spirit of
competition. It has lead to many invitations to compete all over the
country.
9. Although fencing seems more like a sport that would attract more
men than women, at MU and also at the national level the ratio of men
to women is approximately 60/40.
10. The club isn't just about fencing and competition. The club has
helped support its members, occassionally going out to a movie
together (e.g. the premiere of Zorro), having dinner together after a
big tournament; even some members with similar classes forming study
groups!
Just a little history. Hope to see everyone at fencing this Sunday!

For those of you that made it to the Weds night meeting, thank you
for showing up and I appologize for the lack of overall
organization. A recap for those who missed it:
-We don't have the 22.Sept deadline for memberships like the sports
department originally told us! So if you'd like to meet with me and
sign the form, you can catch me on campus (jrgd6c@... to see
when I'm wandering about) or just show up to the first meeting
(check le calendar for time/place)
-We are breaking dues up to pay our wonderful instructor Day as
follows: $18 will get you the first 6 weeks of beginners lessons AND
fencing. The meeting times will be broken into halves, the first
half is lessons, the second is free fencing. If you don't want to
take the beginner lessons, you can just show up for the second half.
The second 6 weeks of the semester is when you will choose foil,
epee or sabre and we will begin the more advanced lessons. The
second session of lessons is another $18, but if you don't want to
do the advanced lessons, you needn't pay this second half and may
just come to free fencing. This second session is key if you are
wanting to train to competition level, though, so it's also decision
time on whether you are fencing recreationally or competitively.
-The first four meetings you show up to are free and you need not
pay dues until your fifth meeting. This gives you a chance to get a
feel for fencing and decide if it's for you or not without monitary
obligation. We hope you stay, of course, but understand if you're
not feeling it. ^_~
-When your dues are paid, if you do not have your own equipment,
equipment from the Fencing Club's gear will be assigned to you. You
will need to sign a release form stating that you are now
responsible for this equipment in case of loss, damage or theft.
Hope to see you soon!

As you can tell from the details of this message
(including what I omitted), this is not just a
meet-and-greet session. Our Prez needs to turn in
paperwork regarding medical insurance to the
university. Medical insurance is *NOT* required to be
in the fencing club, but it is a requirement that the
University know who in sports clubs does and does not
have medical insurance.
This was earlier directed toward one member, but it
applies to everyone: If you cannot make the meeting
tonight, please contact our Prez and figure out when
you can fill out the form. We have a deadline on this,
and after that, we cannot accept members for at least
the semester, if not the year (I am unsure on that.
Jes?)
Hope to see as many of you as we can tonight!
Justin, Treasurer

The meeting is at 6pm at the coffee shop in Mem Union (people keep
mailing me so I thought I'd say it again).
Ditto with the "hey to everyone" that Day gave.
I'm Renee, the epeeist advisor of this brave gang of folks.
I've been fencing for a while now, but not near as long as Day.
Everything I know was actually taught to me by Miz Day. I was the test
subject for her epee class when the subject first came, and have not
looked back since.
What else can I say? I work in the library so I'm always around? I'm
planning on coming to the meeting Wednesday? I'm tired after a weekend
in K.C.?
Yeah, all that.
I can't wait for everyone to get together to start learning/practice on
Sunday the 26th! I'll be there with a big smile and my sword in hand.
See you then,
Renee
**************************
Wanna see my bruises?
:)
Hi everyone!
Wow, the list just keeps growing! I'm just sending a note to say
Welcome and that I posted some notes to the Files section of the
YahooGroup. I hate getting large files in my Inbox so this way
people can only choose to download what they might like. There are
forms and training plans for those interested in competition and a
Level 1 Foil Handbook for those just beginning (not that you cannot
compete too!). I'm afraid I can't find the digital version of the
Beginning Epee Handbook *grins* and never quite finished the Sabre
one. Please note: I am not an officer of the MU Fencing Club so
don't consider any of those forms as required or authorized by the
MU Fencing Club. *grins* But they are nice enough to let me post
them.
Our lovely Prez has posted the calendar with our first practice day
scheduled: Sunday, September 26th! It promises to be an exciting
evening. And don't forget there is the meeting this very Wednesday
at Memorial Union coffee shop! It is coming up fast.
In the mean time there are a number of sources, if you are
interested, for finding more information about fencing. The first
of course is the MU Fencing webpage (soon to have a great new
update) but also:
www.usfencing.org
Which is the home website for fencing's governing body.
Unfortunately, their server crashed bigtime and they won't be back
online until the end of the week.
www.fencing.net
One of my favourite websites. It has some interesting articles,
equipment reviews, a discussion forum with LOTS of knowledgeable
fencers and I mustn't forget the video clips of fencing!!!
If you aren't the sort who enjoy's online reading, surprisingly,
Ellis library has some pretty good fencing books. Some of my
favourites:
By the Sword - Richard Cohen
A great book written in a conversational style that covers the
history of fencing all the way to the modern sport with
illustrations and anecdotes from his years of experience in the
International fencing arena.
Fencing - Step by Step - Elaine Cheris
A fabulous woman epee-fencer who has fenced on many Olympic teams.
The book really is a step by step guide with tips and information to
get you started right when it comes to fencing.
Foil Fencing - Charles Simonian and
Foil Fencing - Charles Selberg
Two nice beginning foil books with information on equipment, stance,
terminology, training and tactics.
For those just signing on and since we are such a nice small
friendly sort-of club, let me introduce myself: My name is Day Al-
Mohamed. I'm a grad student here at MU. I have fenced for some
years and love teaching the sport. I have worked with all three
weapons: Foil, Epee and Sabre; but have a preference for
Foil....uh, I have a cool dog...but she fences sabre. *grins*
Anyway, nice to see so many new names and I hope to hear from ya
soon!
-day
Good news, I'm about half a step ahead of you. Today I got us booked
from the 26 of 9 til the 19 of 12. That is to say, we have all but
one Sunday booked from 26.Sept to 19.Dec! Yay! I'll be adding the
dates and meeting times to the calandar, and I'm emailing the billion
people that signed up on Weds. Thank Day for finding the room and
dates for me ;)

Well, there are things we have to take care of before we can fence,
you see. Like getting a place to fence (in a previous message, I said
we would not be using Dexter's). We also need to follow protocol to
get the club in good standing with SOMT, which involves me having
these forms filled out. If I don't have the forms from someone, I
cannot have them in the club without risking punishment from the U. I
promise as soon as I know where and when, you'll know where and when.
Little patience, I do have a 19 hour week to handle on top of this ;)

Well, all I know is I got some coffee, it was expensive, and halfway
through it I looked at the squishy ring thing around the cup and knew
why. X'D
Actually, I think what I'm going to do (which I forgot until now) is
get a txt version of the file, upload it and let you all print it off
and bring it so we don't have to sit there filling out papers. I'll
get to that later this evening because I'm cramming for Calc right
now (me bad!), but you can drop them with me at 5:30 :)

Hi everyone!
What a fabulous day and SOOOO many people signed up for fencing!
Now if they all showed up, wouldn't that be GREAT???
One of the things brought up was competition and when and where and
all that good stuff. In the files section I just left a copy of the
form/sheet that I gave my Competition class yesterday for
this "season." There ARE other events out there, hence the
word "Tentative" in the title. However, it includes most of the
tournaments in this area that are good, both for the beginner and
the more experienced fencer. It also lists a tentative estimate of
the cost of the Registration (and when needed the Event fee) based
on prior years. The USFA website has been down so I couldn't go
back and check directly with the clubs.
Hope that helps!
P.S. For Justin: Don't forget the cost of copies in the budget.
Not just of flyers but of things like techinical manuals, individual
fencing reports, insurance forms etc...
P.P.S. I removed the partial version of the Activities Mart Flyer
from the files section as it was missing the crucial data. Once a
practice time has been decided the time and place can be added to
the new one with Jes' info and put back in the files. I can put up
copies of the flyer in Tate, A&S and Cornell Hall.
It is actually not technically a Starbucks (as my ex who was an
official Starbucks' Brarista ranted to me time and time again) it is
Applause and some of the coffee drinks they sell are Starbucks branded
:) haha
I am so down for it. Except I have an MSA Senate meeting at 6, if I
get there are 5:30, could I go ahead and fill everything out? The MSA
meeting is just across the room in Stotler Hall.

I need to have a meeting with most or all of you there to fill out forms so MU will let us exist. Does anyone have night class, work late or anything else that might hinder an evening meeting? I would like to look at doing it next Weds around 6 if at all possible. If I can get most of you together, that will suffice and I can meet up with the others around campus as needed.
