Hey guys. A while back we'd talked about getting matching swimsuits
for our team...the decision was for everybody to buy speedo endurance
suits of a particular style, but few people did. Some other options
are a bulk ordered lycra suit (won't last forever like endurance),
everybody buys their own green suit, or...we continue to not really
look like a team.
So, I made a nifty poll on our yahoo! site...lets take a vote to see
who's interested in what.
VOTE!
Hannah
Enter your vote today! A new poll has been created for the
MSUUWH group:
What is your preference for a team swimsuit?
o $78 endurance suit - lasts forever!
o $25 bulk ordered suit - we'll match...for a while
o no team suit - matching is stupid
To vote, please visit the following web page:

not collected via email. To vote, you must go to the Yahoo! Groups
web site listed above.
Thanks!
Hi Carly!
Dave Sun from DC told me that we could have up to two "coaches" for
our team. In our conversation, Mike & Elizabeth were the two people
we'd both mentioned. However, I think it could be anybody. I guess
we'll have to decide...

Hey guys, here's the super long e-mail from DC about their upcoming tournament. The "open" division is already full, so if we're going to
attend we'll be playing in the "college" division. They've modified some of the rules such that:
a) Mike & Elizabeth can play with us as "coaches" b) Katie and I can play with both MSU & US Women (as long as it's okay
with both teams).
So...who else is interested? We need at least 10, can have as many as 12. With the exception of Mike & Elizabeth, everybody on our team MUST be an MSU student.

All,
Sorry for the delay but there were some issues that the student club needed to work out as part of their first ever tournament. As
promised, here are the details they have decided. Some things are still in flux but any changes that occur will only hopefully only be for the better.
The Inaugural GMU UWH Invitational (with support from the DC Beltway
Bottom Feeders)
Pool Time:
Friday 3/31 7:00 to 8:30 setup time
Saturday 4/1 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM Captain's meeting at 10:30.
Sunday 4/2 9:00 AM to 1:00PM
Divisions:
There will be two divisions- Open division and College division. The
Open Division is limited to the first 6 teams. The four college division teams will be required to meet "modified" NCAA eligibility requirements (see below). Since the GMU club is an official university team, intercollegiate competition is REQUIRED and this is
part of that effort. There is high demand by non-college teams to attend so all teams which qualify for the College division should plan to play in that division and thereby allow others to attend the tournament. We are trying to find ways to increase the number of open
teams we can accomdate but we won't know about that until later.
Tournament Format:
There will be one fully enclosed playing surface. Play will be 6 on 6 with side substitution. Due to the limited number of team openings,
teams will be allowed to suit up to 12 players per game but don't feel bad if you have 10 players. Saturday will consist of mixed play between both divisions for seeding. Sunday will be play offs within the divisions but due to time contraints, the first round of playoffs
could begin on Saturday. In support of the college and US Women's teams, we have created the H rule- if you are a college student playing on the Women's team and your school team is also attending, you may play on both teams with their approval. The Minnesota rule
will be in effect.
Cost:
Open division- $600/team
College division- $400/team
These fees include the Saturday banquet hosted by the Beltway Bottom Feeders. If your team has more than 12 players or you are a
non-player, an additional $10/person banquet fee will be requested. Payment is due by 2/28, a $100 late fee will apply for any late submissions. Please contact us when your team check is ready and we will provide details.
Lodging:
Limited floor space will be available on a first come first served basis. Otherwise there are a few hotels near campus and we can provide details if needed. Please contact Juan (
juluis21@...) with your needs.
This tournament is shaping up to be a great one. Although it is GMU's first tournament and some growing pains are expected, there will also be some trademark aspects that one would expect at any DC tournament.
There seems to be a large demand to attend this tournament so please get your team organized before all the spaces run out. The college division should be a fun experiment so we ask for everyone's patience as we try something new. If you have any questions please don't
hesitate to ask.
Thanks.
------------------------
"Modified" NCAA eligibility requirements:
The standard NCAA eligibility requirements are: (a) be enrolled in at
least a minimum full-time program of studies leading toward a degree, (b) be in good academic standing as defined for all students by the college/university, (c) maintain progress toward a degree, as defined by the college/university and by the NCAA rules.
These requirements are being modified in the following manner:
1) Clause a) will be changed to allow for part-time students
2) One, possibly two waivers will be granted per team to allow for a non-student coach and possibly an assistant coach respectively. These
coaches can be in-water playing "coaches". College teams should inform us with how many waivers they are requesting. A final decision of whether 1 or 2 waivers are allowed will be based on what all the
teams are requesting.
Due to the signficant discount offered to College division teams, players should expect to present proof of eligibility upon request.

Who else can come to this? I hope it's not just me & Josh. Not that I
don't love Josh...but 2 people do not make a team.
I'm an uberdork so I made a database on the yahoo! groups website for
people going to guelph...put your info in there, e-mail me back, or
tell me at practice.
We need to RSVP SOON! Space is limited. Also, Guelph has an AMAZING pool.

If you paid scuba club dues, you get a free shirt! We'll have them
Wednesday night next week, so come pick yours up.
If you haven't paid club dues you should. It's $25 for the spring
semester - and you get a free shirt! You also get into our awesome
club events, like the hayride & broomball.
Hannah
Hey everyone, below is the information for the scuba club's spring
break trip. I know some of you will have received this on the scuba
club list, and I apologize for the duplicate e-mail. At the end of the
week, there is the Palm Beach 4 on 4 hockey tournament, a very fun
potluck tournament in an outdoor pool. The tournament is 2 days, and
usually costs about $45. It's a very fun, laidback tournament, and some
great hockey. You are welcome to join us for the week of diving if you
are a certified diver - if not, you can go snorkelling or enjoy the
beaches of palm beach county. If you have any questions, let me know.
The much-anticipated information on the Spring Break 2006 trip to Palm
Beach, FL is below! There will be a meeting on Feb 2 in IM Circle rm
112 at 8pm to go over other information and answer questions. We'll
also begin collecting deposits at this meeting (details below). If you
can't make the meeting but are interested in the trip, send an e-mail
to msuscuba@... with Spring Break 2006 in the subject. There will
be information sheets at the meeting too with a breakdown of the
schedule and pricing.
Come join the MSU SCUBA Club to dive the beautiful reefs of Palm Beach,
FL! We are diving with an excellent operation, Jim Abernethy's Scuba
Adventures (www.scuba-adventures.com). Palm Beach is a great dive
destination - the proximity of the North Atlantic current brings in
large animals and lots of small fish also. Palm Beach is also the
second largest sea turtle breeding ground in the world, and spring is
loggerhead turtle mating season! Past trips have included encounters
with dolphins, whales, manta rays, manatees, mola mola, and hammerhead
sharks, in addition to the beautiful reefs and numerous sea turtles
(which are a given). This is an excellent trip, great value for diving,
and a lot of fun!
Here is a rough cost estimate:
Transportation: $60-$80
Diving: $50/day (5-6 days of diving, plus night dive)
Hotel: $25/night (6 nights/hotel)(estimate)
Gear rental: $70/week for BC/Reg, $25/week for wetsuit
Other costs: food, certifications, crew tip, bar excursions, etc. Total cost: ~$500-$600.
It's a beautiful dive destination, and an excellent deal for the
diving. You can complete your open water certification with John, and
spend the week diving with your friends from the Scuba Club. If you
would like to go, plan on attending the club meeting on Thursday at 8pm
in IM Circle rm 112. We'll have photos and video from past trips to see
at the meeting also. If you cannot make the meeting but are interested
in the trip, please send an e-mail to msuscuba@... Hope to see you
there!
I just got out of a meeting with Joel where he stressed that they will
be checking IDs at IM Circle after 5pm. So, bring your ID to
practice. If you don't have a student/faculty ID I can get you a
"sports club" ID...
I'll be amazed if this ACTUALLY happens, they say they're going to do
this every year. *shrug* You've been warned.
Hannah
Just a reminder - no practice on Monday for the next 5 weeks. We'll
still be playing on Wednesdays from 8-10, and Fridays from 6-8pm, so
hope to see you there! Since we have less practice time during the
week, lets try and make the most of the time we do have - arrive a few
minutes early if you can so we can get in the water when our pool time
starts.
Also, if you have any club gear that is at your dorm, apartment,
parents' house, favorite bar, etc. please bring it with you to practice
- we need to inventory club gear and there is a lot of stuff that is
missing. We can't afford to have people keeping gear - you can take it
for tournaments, but otherwise it needs to stay with the club. Thanks.
I read an article on it--it's actually quadrilpalegics, which means that
they have limited mobility in all 4 of their limbs.

it's actually a movie about wheelchair rugby played by quadriplegics,
which is waymore badass than wheelchair basketball. it's pretty
interesting, and a very cool documentary. plus, the US goes and kicks
some cheatin' canadian ass - always a good theme for a movie. I highly
recommend it.
The movie Murderball is showing at the MSU Union tomorrow night at
6:30pm...since there's no hockey due to Discover SCUBA would any one
like to go see this with me?
It's a documentary about wheelchair basketball, which from the
trailers I've seen is a pretty gruesome sport. Stories about the
players and what happened to them, etc...I saw an interview with one
of the guys from it, and it's way more interesting than it sounds.
It's free, so I'm going to try to get there a little early, maybe
about 6:00. Let me know if you're interested.

Apparently my forward didn't really forward. The tournament is March
18th. Here's the e-mail from Guelph:
Hey Everyone!
We've finally received official confirmation for the 2006 College
Royal Tournament!
The date will be Saturday March 18th 2006, from 8 am - 7 pm.
(Captain's meeting is at 7:30 am).
This year there will only be an A and B division. That being said,
these divisions are open to whatever teams wish to sign up and we will
make special considerations when determining game schedules if junior
teams wish to enter. The Guelph tournament has always been based on
promoting the sport of underwater hockey and ensuring that everyone
who enters has a great experience.
Cost is $40 per person or $350 per team.
Teams may consist of up to 12 people but only 10 may be suited up per
game.
Banquet tickets are separate, and maybe be purchased at the tournament
for ~$10 (location and prices yet to be confirmed). Please indicate
how many people in your team are planning on attending the banquet.
Registration will be limited to the first 16 teams from whom we
receive both a roster and payment. If you are looking for a team,
please e-mail us and we will do our best to find you a team closer to
the tournament date.
All information and payments must be received by March 11th 2006.
Teams who register after this time will be subject to an extra $50 fee
per team.
Rosters and cheques can be sent to:
Grachella Garcia
Department of Athletics
50 Stone Road East
University of Guelph
Guelph, ON
N1G 2W1
For more information about the accomodations, rules etc. you can visit
our website www.rmbsolutions.com/~uwh. We are in the process of
updating the page, but most of last year's tournament information is
still relevant.
Hope to see everyone out at what's sure to be another fun and exciting
underwater hockey tournament!

so, when is it?
Mary
p.s.: good luck this weekend!
Just a reminder - there is a home basketball game tonight at 7pm, so
it's going to be tough to park near practice - allow some extra time
or make other arrangements. See you tonight!
Come to Harper's this afternoon after 5:30 to join us for some
pre-hockey food and fun - did I mention that it's half-off on
Wednesdays? And beer is a good source of carbs for energy while
playing hockey :) See you there!
There will be hockey practice tomorow, Jan 11. IM Circle, 8-10pm. We
had a conflict with the discover scuba, so now there will be hockey
practice. Hope to see you there!!
Monday January 9, 2006 8:00 pm
- 10:00 pm
This event does not repeat.
Event Location: IM Circle Pool
Notes:
First practice of the semester, bring your friends!
Hey guys, our first practice of the semester will be on January 9th,
from 8-10pm at IM Circle.
Wednesday January 11th there will be no practice due to Discover
SCUBA. If you haven't gotten the chance yet, come and try out scuba
diving.
The SCUBA club meeting will be on Jan 19th at 8pm, at IM West room
208. There will be information on upcoming activities, club trips,
spring break, scuba classes, etc.
We'll be playing on 1/13 (6-8pm), 1/18 (8-10pm), and 1/20 (6-8pm) as
well, based on the assumption that the SCUBA class won't start until
after the meeting (Brian, correct me if I'm wrong). I put these dates
on the calendar on the Yahoo! page. you can see it here:
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/MSUUWH/cal
Somebody needs to put up flyers advertising practice to new people,
preferably the weekend before school starts. However, I won't be in
town…do I have any volunteers? Mary? Josh? I'll print the flyers off
before I leave if someone is willing to do this...
Also, join our Yahoo! Group since I'll be switching to that soon…go to:
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/MSUUWH
to sign up for it today. If you get this twice, you're already signed up.
