Joe:
We may need a couple of runners for our 6 person ultra team. We plan to run 3 legs at a time, twice.
Thanks for your work on this race.

Hey there,

FYI, our average time was a 9:00 minute mile.  We had several people much faster, and several slower.  I don't know if we were "quite a bit faster and more competitive"  than Terry's team.  As far as I'm concerned, any team that finishes has accomplished something incredible.

In all honesty, the biggest issue for any of us was the sleep deprivation.  Some of us were in good shape, some weren't, but with the exception of one leg on which one of our runners had some issues -- I think it was shin splints -- we finished pretty strongly.

I really think that the best formula for success is to have a bunch of people who get along with each other.  That can help more than you can imagine.

Good luck,

G

All,
Running with lights(headlamps) can be a unique experince-you'd be
surprised just HOW dark it is late at night, early AM, especially in the
more "rural" areas, There are several varietes of headlamps-some work
MUCH better than others. The nice thing about being on a bike path is
you don't havce to see quite so well-just put one foot in front of the
other.

Hello there,

From a running perspective, if you are a 12 person team, each person
should be able to run a half marathon. Although none of the legs are
that long, that is a good level of fitness.

As far as dealing with the cramping in the van, the sleep deprivation,
etc.. well, there really isn't a good way to train for it. It is a
good idea to practice running with the lights, and to run at different
times of the day. My three legs last year were at 8:00 PM, 3:00 AM and
11:00 AM.

Good luck.

Our Team doesn't have a specific training schedule, but we did do the
Hoosier 200 Relay (Evnasville to Bloomington IN) last summer (2006).
Based on our experience , it would be beneficial to practice your runs
over the alloted finish time (36 hrs). So you will want to have
weekends where you would do your 3 legs, at whatever distance, over
that period of time. Based on your paces, you'll have to figure out
about when/how often you will be running. For our 12 person team, we
figured about every 11 hours, and we finished in 33:45, so we weren't
too far off. Figure on depriving yourself of some sleep between legs-
because most of you won't get much, even in your support vehicles. If
you know which legs each of your team will be running, they should plan
on training at those times (which may mean some VERY early morning,
very late night runs for those people.)

My legs in the H200 were 4:00 PM, 4:30 AM and 3:00 PM. Hope you're all
adaptable. As seen from these e-mails, your run time could be all over
the map! You can also see the difrerences in the times between legs.
Although we were all experienced marathoners, we had never done an event
of this type, we had abilities ranging from sub-7 to 10:30, and our goal
was simply to finish and have fun-which we did, otherwise we wouldn't
be doing another of these events. We set a time goal to average 10
minute miles over the 200 miles on a brutally hilly course, and came
within about 15 seconds per mile of that goal. Gilaads team was
obviously quite a bit faster and more competetive. I would suggest that
your team decide what you want out of this race before you put it
together, so there are no hard feelings or disappontments..

Hi all,

I currently have a team of 6 runners. We are shooting for a team of
eight. So, we need two more runners. We are looking to finalize a
team by the middle of January 2008. The average age of our team is
between 25 - 27 age range, and we collectively run about an 8 pace.
We as a group decided to start early and start training in the middle
of January 2008, simply to have fun and have something to do
throughout the weeks. Preferably, if you are between 21- 30 (and like
to have fun) and would like to run with us, just give me a holler.
The age range isn't a requirement, but we found from experience people
at or around the same age seem to blend better (not supportive by
science however). So, man or woman, if your interested let me know.
Thanks.

James

Terry,

Thanks for your contribution.  I like your advice.  When I talk to people about the relay (i.e.: to people who are not familiar with the event), I generally ask them: "Can you wake up in the morning and run, say, 5 or 6 miles, go to work, come home in the evening and run another 5 or 6 miles, go to bed, and wake up the next day and run 5 or 6 miles before going to work?  If so, then you can do this event."  Of course, the actual race is a little more rigorous.  But then, running in an actual marathon is more rigorous than the training runs - right?  And so it is with the relay.

But if one can simulate the times and distances that they will run in the way that you are suggesting, that person should have a sufficient training base for the real thing.  They should just keep the other points that you made in mind: like possible sleep deprivation, etc.

I ran the 2005 GMR, and several of us (me included) did not get any real extended sleep.  Others were able to get a good amount of sleep in.  (One of our past participants told me that she missed quite a bit of the course due to her "ability to sleep anywhere - anytime....")  So it's a "mixed bag".

But, again (much like the marathon), the event itself will put energy into you.  It's an adventure.....

Good luck to all of you with your training.

And thank you for your contributions to the MC200 Yahoo Group.

Hello there,

From a running perspective, if you are a 12 person team, each person should be able to run a half marathon.  Although none of the legs are that long, that is a good level of fitness.

As far as dealing with the cramping in the van, the sleep deprivation, etc..   well, there really isn't a good way to train for it.  It is a good idea to practice running with the lights, and to run at different times of the day.  My three legs last year were at 8:00 PM, 3:00 AM and 11:00 AM.

Good luck.

Regarding training, I ran the ragnar relay race last summer and they
have a great training program for people to use. Go to

Hey,

I was wondering if anyone needs a runner. I am 28 and from Chicago.

I would prefer to join one of the mixed groups, so if there is a team
looking to add one male, let me know! My pace is between 7-8 minute
miles depending on the difficulty.

Looking forward hearing from someone soon. I can be reached at 847-894-

Hi all.

I just read about this amazing race, and I am really psyched. I've
already spoken with two friends, and they are also interested. We are
thinking of going for somewhere between 6 and 8 runners (I would
prefer 6 to be in the "ultra" category). Now the problem is we need
more runners. All three of us would be running at 7:00-8:00 pace, and
though it would be nice to find someone in the same pace range, this
is not that important. We mainly want to have fun and enjoy the
experience :)

So, anyone still looking for a team; or a partial team looking for
more members, please let me know!

Also, any idea when the registration closes?

thanks!

We are putting together an ultra team and a 12 person mixed, master team. (Actually, we already registered the team now we are looking for a few runners.) This will be the 12 person team's 4th year running Madison to Chicago. We are out to have fun and make sure no one gets hurt running. Most of us reside in Ohio and a few in Michigan. We support our 12 person runners with two vans. If you are interested, email me at rjbukas@....

YMCA in Waukegan, IL. Still worked out fine.

Sleeping accommodations were fine at the VTA in the church in Racine
(TA 24?). Some members will sleep on the floor anyway even if you do
get a hotel room.

Everyone in our group brought their own food and shared.

Two vans, registration and some other miscellaneous costs (e.g.
gas), our per person came out between $100-$150.

Well worth the cost!

Hi!
I am from Women In Motion. We have done this relay the past three
years and evey year has gone very well. As far as expenses go, besides
registration, we have had the following expenses:

*Matching Uniforms
*Fuel
*We have not had to pay for vans as we have always had two people who
on the team who would provide them.
*One night hotel stay that both vans share in the middle of the night
to shower, change and take a little nap
*Water and Gatorade and some snacks
*Equipment for night running. This was really only the first year, but
if you don't have any of it, you will need to buy it (headlights,
reflective vests)
*Paint for the windows of your vehicle. The first year we stopped on
the route and purchased them so we could paint our windows like
everyone else. Now we have lots of colors. :)

THat's about all I can think of at this time. As for total cost, it is
really hard to say. It depends on type of uniform you get, what the
cost of fuel is next June, what hotel you chose to stay at, how many
snacks you need, etc.

Regardless of what it costs, it is worth it and so much fun!!!! :)

Good Luck!!

Our 11 person team spent about $1400.  All inclusive.  We drove up together on the day of the event.

Our 9 person team spent $1,100 with the largest expenses being transportation followed by food/drink.  We had free nights at the hotel the evening prior so that total doesn't include lodging.

I'm putting together a team or newbies, and I'm trying to get an idea
of how much total this is going to cost. So far, I'm thinking:

van rental
fuel
hotel
food
registration fee

Am I forgetting any potential costs? And, can anyone ballpark me what
they've spent in the past?

Many thanks!

Hey gang~
Does anyone have detailed results from the "former" relay?

What I want: Detailed results, times for each leg & runner (not just
team)

Why: I'm making an "underground" guide -- pace calculator w/ results
pages (great for estimating leg times & a sweet results analysis)

What you get: I'll share my beta version if you have complete team
data ... it's worth the sharing. Trust me.

Plus: I've got some tips for anyone who has a Garmin Forerunner
(201/205, 301/305)

Email me directly at niki_4_0@...
