Glad to see you came aboard Curtis !

Sad truth is, with a maico action photo, one of two things happens,
you either have a really great camera or its blurry,,

Curtis speaks the truth, the day that pic was taken was INCREDIBLE ..
not just for VINTAGE racing, but maybe one of the greatest racing
days ever of any venue ...

If you are anywhere even close to within range of his series, GET
THERE ! you wont regret it !

Hey guys, I like the blurry pic on top of the page. I think it was
taken during one of the best days ever in Vintage motocross racing.
(Did anyone tell you guys I might have an ego?) Curtis Harper here.
If you don't know me, I run MOVMX, the Missouri Vintage Motocross
series. We will be starting up again on March 17th at Harper's Moto
Guzzi on the same track we finished on in November. As always, we
will run all AHRMA classes both vintage and PV. As well there will be
a swap meet in the pits. Free primative camping available Saturday
night. If you wonder if we really have fun, just ask anyone who was
there. If you have any questions please feel free to ask at
movmx1@.... Thanks, Curtis Harper

Rick,

You definitly have a '75 frame. The up tubes wrap around the head
stock a little bit. There is a true '74.5 frame on eBay right now.
Check out the difference between your frame and it.

RE: Kickstarters. Unfortunately you most likely will have to shell
out for one. Maico Only has repro kick starters that are beefier
than the originals(www.maicoonly.com), Eric is a good guy to deal
with. You could try buying a thrashed motor that has a kicker
attached.

Hope this helps.

Travis

If the price is right go for it. The '83 is supposed to be much
better than the '82 but not as good as the '81; Also, the '83 is the
last true Maico.

Sounds like it was last modded in 1976, last raced in 1977, regional
#1 bike around St Paul with some national attempts maybe ?? Then
pickled for 20 years til it came to me ... legend has it that it was
a dealer sponsored bike maybe with factory input ?? I am not
positive Ive tracked down the owner, cuz he really doesnt wanna talk
much about his racing days ?? but whoever built this thing or was
involved in it would recognize it faster than they'd recognize their
mother .... with the cutoff rear loop, the factory connection, and
the era being around 1975,, I thought we may have sister bikes, I
have, like I said, tried to chase the history on this bike, I think
its probably rubbed fenders with some big boys along the way ??
someone serious about racing built the bike ... oh well,, thanx for
looking !

OK. The frame does sort of wrap, but not nearly all the way around
the head tube. So maybe it is a 75.

I have lucked out and recieved pegs and a head stay. Now the
kickstarter and gears are next.

It's a stupid question, but does anyone have a mangled or molested
frame I can get a part of? Apparently, in my intelligent youth, I
cut the rear frame section off...the part beyond the seat. While it
must have been a good idea then, I'm reconsidering the thought now,
and would like to return the item to the frame.

Lemme know...you folks have been great so far!!!

What are you all working and playing with?

Some of thos parts should be relatively easy to come by,, I noticed
some wheelsmith pegs on "the bay" that are at a decent price so
far ... but thats subject to change, I think these pegs may be
accurate for a bike like yours ?

I bought it long ago, in it's day, from Billy Payne, owner of
California Motor Sports and also a local factory rider. in So. Cal.
I'm doing pics soon....the "before" restoration. I do need a few
parts. Key ones are kickstarter, pegs and mounts, headstay, fork
tubes, and some gears.

Rich,

Sounds like a '75 because of the internal springs. Do the front
frame tubes wrap around the head stock a bit where they meet it? If
so it's a '75. I have 2 '74s (250 and 400) and a '75 4 speed,
external spring 400. I love 'em.

Hi guys,

I'm currently bringing back to life my factory bike. It's a four
speed 450...looks to have the 74/75 frame with the cosmetic holes
around the upper shock mounts, and shocks rather far back on the
swingarm. The forks are internally sprung. Wheelsmith work done to
the barrel, etc.

It was a bitchen bike. I hope I can resurrect it.
