on our 1978 4 speed the quadrant is a press on fit (just changed ours)
will need the use of a fly or hydraulic press

--Thanks rick so much, that's great... that is plenty of data to get
me going.... I think that I do not have to worry about the location
of the top mount too much because given the information you have
given me I should be able to duplicate the stock set up. and shock
legnth is not too important either because if every thing else is
right then I should be able to measure the length I need and I can
order accordingly...I will most likely end up using a set of works
performance shocks as well, I have a set on my 78 400 and they work
really well...
Thanks again....

stock legnth or if the the forks had been slide down in the triple

stock.. thanks for the input,

It depends. I don't personally own an M-Star but I know there
weren't many built although they do share many parts with the 1983
Maicos which are much more abundant. I imagine this is a water
cooled bike, correct?

Hello, everyone.
I am in a position to possibly acquire a 1986 or '86 model Maico GM
Star 500 in exchange for one of my own bikes.
I can't seem to find any information on these model years!
Where can I find information / specifications / pictures?
Are the '85 & '86 bikes generally quick & reliable, or best avoided?
What should I look out for when viewing the bike?
I'm located near Glasgow, Scotland.
What are the parts prices and availability like?
Any information will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Ross

Do you have any billet rear brake pedals for the 81?
If so, how much are they ?
I can get them in the Uk but considering the very agreeable exchange
rates at the moment i thought i might save a few quid sourcing from the
US.

Brett,

I believe the stock 490 piston is 86.42mm and then goes up from there.
I have a 86.62mm piston in my bike now. Check the files section, there
might be a bore size chart there.

I have a Maico that I need to get from Greeley, Colorado back to Iowa. Getting
close would be okay too as I can go to KC MO, Omaha, Lincoln, Des Moines, etc to
meet with someone coming this way. Normally I would jump in the truck and get
it myself but I have a bad disc in my back and driving that far kills my back.
I am in south central Iowa.

Come on, go skiing in Colorado, you know you want to. I will pay for your gas.

That is correct...for the MX version only Hal.

The statement is correct regarding the GS models.

As previously stated, the `77 and `78 GS's are the same bike with the
exception of the round fuel tank used on the `78 GS.

The second statement is totally incorrect. The 76 & 77 were both AW design,
the main difference is that the 77 was red. They used the old GP-style 5-speed
engine. The 78 was the first of the Magnums, and used the new,
swingarmpivotboltthroughthecase-style engine. The two groups (AW & Magnum)
shared virtually
NOTHING, other than wheels.

I was initially mistaken when I proclaimed the GS440 in question was a
`77 or `78.

It is absoutely a `77. But it is not because of the motor style.
The `77 and `78 GS's use the AW style motor.

The `77 GS had the AW style coffin tank. The `78 GS (same
motor/frame/suspension) was the same bike as the `77 GS but used a `78
style round tank. The `77 GS did not use the new for `78 Magnum
motor.

We're talking GS model bikes. The Enduros generally lagged a year
behind the MX bikes (except a couple of years).

The `77 MXer is an AW, as the `78 MXer is a Magnum.

The `77 GS is similar to a `77 AW.
The `78 GS is a `77 GS with a `78 style round tank.

Yours is not a 78.The cases and tank look like an AW which is a 77.
Look at the reed valve 78 pic next to your pic and check out the engine. That
small crank case style came out in 1978 and went through 80+++. Browse the

Hey Tomale,

Here are some numbers for you to crunch. All measurements are on
center.

Swingarm pivot to ground, 15 1/8"
Swingarm pivot to end of swingarm, 20"
Swingarm pivot to lower shock mount hole, 12 1/4"
Swingarm pivot to upper shock mount hole, 15 1/8"
Shock length (probably a little longer than stock), 13 9/16"
Rear axle to ground, 13 1/4"
Front axle to ground, 13 5/8"
Bottom of frame to ground (measured just in front of the peg mount) 9
5/8"
Front foot peg hole to ground, 10 3/4"
Upper shock mount hole to ground, 28 3/8"
Top of rear frame loop to ground, 34 1/2"
Tank mount hole to ground, 34 1/16"
Fork angle, approx. 28 degrees.

My shocks are a bit longer than stock because I ordered them from Works
Performance before I even heard of AHRMA. Some one will know the exact
shock length for a stock 74.5 frame, I am sure.

If you need any other measurements, just give me a shout.

I will try to measure my bike and give you some dimensions. Wouldn't
differences in tire heights make a difference in your calculations?
Which frame tube under the motor do you want the measurement taken from?
The cross tube that the lower motor mount is welded to is a little
different between frames. I will get you several different measurements
and then you can use which ever ones works the best for what you are
doing. Give me a few minutes....

Wouldn't a more accurate measurement be the the length of the shocks,
the lower shock mount from pivot dimension and the upper shock mount
position?

Fork angle will differ from bike to bike depending on shock length and
the bottom frame tube height will be different also based on fork
position in the clamps as well as shock length.

On my GP the shocks are 13 5/8", which is longer than stock, as
recommended by Maico Only.
