No, there are no orings on Bing pilots (or any other pilot jet that I know of
- maybe an Amal uses then, but then I don't really consider them to be much
of a carburetor anyway.)

Check your pilot jet to make sure it's not partially blocked - that will
cause the idle you describe.

My stock 81 490 started idling erratically, specifically what is
referred to as a "hanging idle" and turning the airscrew all the way
in and all the way out didn't make a difference. I removed and
disassembled the carb for rebuild and noted several items of concern:

1) The number 220 slide is worn and grooved pretty good and will be
replaced w/new.

2) The pilot jet appears to have a o-ring groove in it but there was
no o-ring. It seems to me that there should there be an o-ring to
seal the od or body of the pilot jet?

So far all the other jets and screws are good condition, the floats
and float level setting and inlet valve are all ok as are the needle
and jet. While racing the bike last weekend at Woodland it ran real
good from mid to top and had a nice looking plug color so I think
I've got an idle circuit problem going on here?

Any comments would be appreciated.

Violating...hahaha..thats funny cause thats kinda how I feel about that
particular retrofit as well...I have an onogoing argument about the fact that
the Bing makes better power with all my Mikuni pals around here...all in good
fun of course until I roost em on Sundays !!!
Eric, dont you ride a 495? Yeah those model 55's worked good now that you
mention it, although my 500 KTM had a Dell Orto on it. Wonder how that swap
would work on a 490....hmmmmm....

That being the Sandspider with the Mikuni just didnt have the power

hook up better by virtue of its tranny ratio's to the rear wheel,

Also if Im not mistaken the 83 carb was one of the late model
magnesium Bings with the choke lever rather than a tickler and those
seemed to work ok from what I remember about them. As far as using a

the only way to exchange the Bing and not loose any performance
horsepower wise. However I have a 250 4 speed that I ran a modified
Mikuni on which the intake was cut back and tapered into the bore
and the whole bore polished that worked extremely well.

Benny, I agree with you. A fresh Bing seems like they pull hard. On
81-250s, I use a Magnesium bodied Bing.Real pain to get the airboot
on, but really flow the mixture. The Bings seem to last a decent
amount of time on a reed motor bike..

Hi Hogy,
I personally prefer a good working Bing over the Mikuni because it gives more
power if properly jetted in stock form. The Mikuni is a viable replacement fo a

What could I expect from a Mikuni? More power? Better response? Better

The original Frankenbike idea was to take the best features of several
years and combine them: '81 or '82 490 motor for power and
tractability, '78 or '79 frame for handling, 42mm forks for suspension
performance and if one wants to go one step further, a Thor style
swing arm and a nice set of Ohlins.

A nice variation is the '81-82 250 reed motor in the '78-79 chassis.

It appears the chain tensioner on this bike was not stock. It should
have had the normal slider.
According to the original owner it came with a chain tensioner wheel
and some other Wheelsmith parts, from the dealer in Michigan.
Now that it is apart I will have to see if I can rebuild it.
Thanks for all of you responses.

Dennis Spors
I bought my 74 and 82 Maico's from Wheelsmith. The had some amazing
stuff at the shop.

something along the lines of a 78 or 79 frame, cut down 42mm forks,
and an 81 swingarm.

I really don't have any complaints about the Bing carb on my '83 490,
but I keep hearing that a Mikuni carb is supposed to be a worthwhile
upgrade. I e-mailed Sudco and they recommened the standard VM type
over the flat slide TMs for my bike.
What could I expect from a Mikuni? More power? Better response? Better
gas mileage?

I'm in the process of building a AHRMA legal 74 440 on a 75 250
frame. Using all the components from the 74 except the frame and
triple clamps. I think that one has to refer back to Boris Karloff's
original definition of a Frankenbike:

"A beast which is made from a collection of exising parts and
pieces. The end result being a finished product that is strong and
functional albeit extremely ugly"

Anyone racing a "frankenbike" must add 4" soles to his MX boots and
Schrader valves to his neck......too much coffee this am!

I just got off the phone with MO, and they said it's not normal.
Eric said I could send him the steel spacers, along with my axle,
and they'd make it right. I asked about the turnaround, and he said
same or next day. Not the easiest to get ahold of, but good guys!

I'm in (what I hope to be) the final steps of installing the bushing
kit in my '74 - just as I've got the swingarm, with it's new
bushings, in place and I'm installing the swingarm pivot bolt, the
bolt won't go through...

I take it apart, and checking the clearances, there is a serious
interference fit between the pivot bolt and the steel spacer tubes,
like the ID of the spacers equals the diameter of the bolt - 14mm.
It won't go in more than an inch or two. I pulled the swingarm bolt
out of another frame to compare, and the fit was identical - too
tight. I might be able to BEAT the axle in place, but I don't see
that as being right. Anybody else using this kit experienced this
problem?

I'm trying to get ahold of MO on the phone, but no luck... If I
can't get ahold of 'em, I guess it's back to the machine shop to
have the spacers bored.

Thanks,

tk

Go back to the Yamaha dealer and see if he can get you the fiber
washer for a 74 TY250 or a 74-75 YZ250/360. All of those petcocks are
a direct fit on the Maico tank nipple.

Of course, you will have to explain to the tatooed wonder that sits
behind the parts counter that Yamaha did indeed manufacture
motorcycles in the 70's. :-) Maybe take a picture as proof.

-Rick, Are you aware of the fact that there are more vintage races
going on up here in the northwest besides Ahrma stuff... We have the
Hammer and Tong series too. it is a three race series and requires no
club licence. A great bunch of guys and there is alway a good turn
out. we run both Vintage and Post Vintage and the average turn out is
about 250 entrants. Last Saturday was the last of the winter series
and we had over 400 entrants.. what a great day of racing.... The
first race of the Hammer and Tong is May 20-21 in Goldendale Wa. If I
remember right it is only a couple hours from Portland. Show up
anytime on Saturday, or come early and race the GrandPrix in the
afternoon and then stay for sunday for the Motocross...

I love your attitude... go for it!
I think the kits that Al sells is around 5 bucks but I could be
wrong... none the less it is not much. As I have said before
rebuilding the old ones is better, I have a set of petcocks that I
would love to rebuild but as of yet have been unable to find the
right pieces. The rubber piece in side the valve area that has the
four holes in it is larger than the kit that Al sells and no one that
I know has them. These look different from the outside beside size...
there is a metal clip that holds the insides together. The older
models used the smaller kit and were helf together by a nut with a
hole in the center that the handle fit through. The later models used
the larger kits. most of the European manufactors all used the same
petcocks.. That would include Husky, Maico and Penton/KTM.... CZ
maybe the odd one out. I had forgotten that Bing sells a kit too, if
it is for the larger petcock, let me know and I will buy a set too.
none the less that washer/gasket that fits between the petcock and
the tank are all the same.

tomale, thanks for the tip on Al.

After posting that, I found also the Bing Agency has rebuild kits
for $12 or so, and these include a washer. I suppose a freash
rebuild in the petcock couldn't hurt. It isn't leaking as it sits,
but if you put some pressure on the lever "in and out" (i.e. not
vertical as in the direction it spins, but horizontal like athwart
the bike) it leaks. Maybe a rebult will stop that.

But still, the principle of the thing, a simple fibre washer
shouldn't have to be a mail order thing in a town the size of
Portland, OR. There has to be a place that has them. It has become a
misson. I'll try some chain saw shops next. Maybe an industrial
supply shop.

-RCF,
This maybe a bit out there but have you tried Al buehner. He sells a
rebuild kit for Petcocks, He is a Penton dealer but the Petocks on
most of the earlier model maico used the same Petcock, and even if
the whole kit is of not much value, the gasket between the petcock
and tank are the same... Also, have you tried, a nylon washer, I used
a nylon washer that came off my airless sprayer. I use to have these
flat tip spray nossle that I wasn't using anymore... went to a
reversa clean style tip... anyway the washer for that was a little on
the big side but once inside worked really well..
By the way, Al's number is 216 651 6559 ask for Al... Not much of a
talker but he knows his stuff and anything I have ordered from him
has been to my house in a week or less....He is the first person I
call when I need parts for the Penton/KTM's
hope this helps...-- In
