Hello, Ladies!

The 2009 Proteus/MABRA Women's Race Series kicks off this Sunday with the Jefferson Cup Road Race...a great spring classic!  This year, there is a Cat 4 ONLY field with many 1st-timers already registered.  The race is on a closed 10-mile course through the lovely wine country of Charlottesville...always a great event.  There are only 6 slots open, so head on down and register at the event:               http://www.bikereg.com/events/Register.asp?EventID=8003      Why wait to start racing?

The race series events have been posted, and already, another race has been added, so please check back frequently.  Series info (races, rules) can be found here:   http://www.artemisracing.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=24&Itemid=35                                                                          (part of the National Cycling Made Real Women's Race Series)

As mentioned in a previous e-mail, there is a search out for a new Series Coordinator.  Due to lack of interest, these e-mails will be less frequent, so stay tuned to the web site for results and upcoming events/changes.  The next Series race will be Tyson's Corner Crit on April 5th: http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=7767

This list has been OPENED to members as a communication venue, so feel free to respond with race updates, info, Kudos, car-pooling, etc.

Looking forward to seeing a ton of you soon!  Please support the promoters that support us!

Thanks,

Evelyn

Hello, Ladies!

I hope that many of you are getting excited for the 2009 race season and have had a good "off-season" thus far!
Trade Zone training races start this SUNDAY, and the U of MD crit is on the calendar for March 14!

After 10+ years of coordinating the Women's Race Series in our region, it's time for me to step down and allow room for fresh ideas and a new voice.  I am looking for a replacement to oversee the series.  Much of the infrastructure is in place, so just looking for leadership.  In fact, Proteus Bicycles (of College Park) will be the title sponsor along with MABRA!

I have sincerely enjoyed promoting the growth of women's racing over the years.  The most rewarding part of it to me is seeing the not-so-good women grow in skill, strength, confidence, and knowledge to excel.  And, even if they didn't 'excel' they stuck it out to finish races to be part of the competition, still gaining personal improvement.  On the other end, seeing the top women compete and strategize on how to stay on top of the Series is always interesting!  The Cat 3 Series permitted many women to gain upgrade points to enable them to go on to Cat 2.  This is HUGE for growth for the sport.

I will continue my role as the MABRA Women's Coordinator and will be accessible to the new Coordinator, and to address women's race issue in general.  Thanks to ALL of you who are *still* around and have contributed to the women's series .

Please contact me if you are interested in keeping the MABRA/Proteus Women's Race Series alive!

Sincerely (and thanks!)

Evelyn

2008 MABRA Cat 4 / Cat 3 Women's Race Series
(part of the national CYCLING MADE REAL Women's Series)

Welcome the MABRA Women's Series e-mail.  The Women's Series is a group of selected MABRA events suitable for Cat 3 & 4 women's development.  The objective is to have women of all skill levels come out and experience bike racing at where they can achieve success.  And success is not necessarily about winning!

Wow, the race season is over for most (unless you are doing the Time Trial this week-end!).  Many thanks to the core group of women who raced so many times this season.  A lot of improvement was noted in many of you, and congratulations to those who have (or plan to) upgrade!  The new USAC rules have made it more difficult to acquire upgrade points, so the Cat 3 women's growth is not as high as usual, but a few more upgrades are expected.  Good growth on the 3 to 2 upgrades, though!  Growing the sport for women and advancing the opportunities for women in bike racing is the goal of this series, so thank you to all who participated.

Congratulations goes out to the SERIES WINNERS!  Amanda Watson has reigned the Cat 3 Series all season.  Although Linh Tran held the Leader's jersey for 2/3 of the season, her teammate, Dori Buckenthal earned the jersey for the final part of the season, right down to the wire at Turkey Day.   And speaking of Turkey Day, Amy Westenfeld took the Cat 4 win at TD, after a solo breakaway.  Jen Cheng took advantage of the field sprint to be the 1st Cat 3 winner in the Open race at TD.  Good job, Girls!

To celebrate, the SERIES PRIZES will be awarded this week-end at the Kelly Acre Cyclocross Race.  If you have never been to a CX race, give it a go!  We will meet at 11:00 (women's races at 1:30).  Prizes go 10 deep for the Cat 4 Women and 8 deep for the Cat 3 Women!  Good schwag provided courtesy of MABRA through Proteus Bicycles!   BIG thanks to both!

THIS WEEK-END!
Are you ready for Cyclocross?   Even some of the new Cat 4 Women are hooked.  You don't need a new bike if you already have a mountain bike.  Just try it and have fun!  There are TWO events this week-end.

It's been a few weeks since our last Series race, so I hope that everyone enjoyed the great August weather and Labor Day holiday.  The Page Valley Road Race sounded tough and a bit hot.  More women in the field surely would have made it easier and more fun!  :-)  Nonetheless, Ainhoa Perez continues to win, even as a newly upgraded Cat 3!  The Cat 4 Women's race was won by a new name, Nichole Kelleher, rumored to be a Virginia tri-athlete!  Great job to both in a difficult race.

There is still time to try a race this season.  The traditional "Turkey Day" race is a 'must-do' even if you have never raced before.  Try your legs at this fun event to see how much fun racing is and to get you inspired for next season.  As for the women who have been racing, the "Top 10" Cat 4 Women and "Top 8" Cat 3 Women will receive End-of-Season Prizes!   This year, the season wrap-up will be at Turkey Day.   The winners will be determined and we will share food and beverage to celebrate the season!  Feel free to bring something fun and plan to just hang out and watch the races...we will begin *after* the Women's race so that the Cat 3 Women can join in and relax.  For those who will be in the Top 8 and 10, please use the link below to  help think of items for your "WISH LIST"!

http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=6662

September 14--Turkey Day Circuit Race (Upper Marlboro, MD) and End-of-Season Women's Series Party!  As mentioned above:  Great course for beginners.  Us experienced riders will support you newbies, I promise.  Last chance for the women at the top to fight for their final Series position!

Events Coming Up!
Get ready for Cyclocross!  There are many beginner clinics around the region.  You don't need a new bike if you already have a mountain bike.  Just try it and have fun!

September 21--ING Direct Capital City Criterium (Washington, DC!):  A brand new PRO event right under our nose!  Come and see the pro men tear up the street at super speeds!  This event is huge and just recently announced.  Us (the cycling community) need to be there as spectators to show our support for bike racing in a venue like this to keep it coming back bigger and better next year.  If WE don't support it, why should the City, right?  Come down and enjoy the action and support the local businesses.  If you have kids, they have a race!  Spread the word.

Despite having no series event this past week-end, many women still raced; some raced locally and some went to the Tour De Millersburg in PA.  *Everyone* had a good week-end in PA and had nothing but good things to say about the event!  Next year, we hope to populate the Cat 4 Women's field three-fold!  Read more and see a few photos here:
http://www.artemisracing.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=130&Itemid=1

With only three Series events remaining, everyone should try to make each event.  Promoters who provide women's fields are still looking at our numbers, and will not continue to offer women's fields if the turn-out is continually low.  SO, it 'aint over til it's over!  Get out and race!  The "Top 10" Cat 4 Women and "Top 8" Cat 3 Women will receive End-of-Season Prizes!   This year, the season wrap-up will be at Turkey Day.  For those who will be in the Top 8 and 10, please use the link below to provide me with your "WISH LIST"!
http://citybikes.com/page.cfm?pageID=37

THIS WEEK-END!
August 24--Page Valley Road Race (Stanley, VA): The women who raced on this course earlier this season say that it is great.  The roads are quiet with beautiful scenery.  The Cat 4 Women are starting to register, but the Cat 3 Women's field is light.  The more women who race, the better the racing (more wheels to suck)!  Registration on Bike Reg closes on FRIDAY, so it's not too late.  Grab a friend and car-pool to Luray, VA.  Come out to give it a try, or come for the upgrade points!

The Cat 4 Women rocked the Time Trial this past week!  With a great turn-out and reasonable temps for a sunny day, the Ladies pedaled on.  Mary Gardner, who seems to only show up for time trials, showed us why.  She took the OVERALL BEST time for the day for the women and the Cat 4s.  Mary usually races Masters, but was confused by the way that 40+ Women was mixed in the 30+ category, so she chose Cat 4!  Either way, a fantastic ride!  Our regulars, Amy Westendfeld and Dori Buckethal took 2nd and 3rd.

The Cat 3 women's time was dominated by Christina Briseno!  Very close times followed by Sara Zeigler for 2nd and Amanda Watson for third.  Congratulations to all and our new TT Champions!  Also, Ainoha Perez completed her 1st event as a Cat 3, and finished a respectable 4th.  Great job!  The TT results are here:  http://www.bikereg.com/Results/2008/08/09-Church-Creek-Fall-Time-Trial.asp

The Series results are posted.

THIS WEEK-END!

There are no Series events this week-end, but...

August 15-17--A Special Road Trip Event—Tour de Millersburg (Millersburg, PA): NEW Stage Race in PA where Bob Roll will be present!  The promoter worked with us women and is not only providing a quality women’s race, but a separate Category 4 women’s race!   Events like this need our support to continue!   This event may be part of the Series next year, so scope out this promised-to-be fun event this week-end!  We NEED women there to keep this race ALIVE for WOMEN!!  See you there...it will be a good time.

http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=6541   Register now!  Host housing available.

August 16--Highway to Heaven Hill Climb (Ellicott City, MD): If you simply cannot make the stage race!

http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=6848

 SERIES Events Coming Up!

There are only 3 series events left this season.  Plan on finishing the Series out!

August 24--Page Valley Road Race (Stanley, VA)

September 13--Giro de Coppi (Barnsville, MD) MABRA RR Championship

September 14--Turkey Day (Upper Marlboro, MD)

HOT, HOT, HOT best describes last week's Hunny Bop!  (Look out for next year...it may be called the Hunny Bake!)  But, folks still came out to race and there was plenty of water and cold drinks to help stay hydrated.  Luckily, the women's races were earlier in the day.  The Cat 4 Women's field had an amazing 35 racers, with 7 of them being "First Timers".  Wow, good for them!  Hope that we will see them back again this season.  But the battle for the win came down to our "regulars".  This time, Amy Westenfeld took the field sprint win!  Ainoha Perez followed close behind for 2nd.  As it turns out, that was enough to put Ainoha over the top for Cat 3 upgrade points...Congratulations to Ainoha!  (Note: With the changes in USAC upgrade criteria, it has become more difficult to acquire upgrade points.  Despite Ainoha's many wins this season, she has just reached the maximum amount, where in previous season, we would have seen more upgrades by now.)

The Cat 3 Women had a much more difficult race, being integrated in with the 1 & 2 women, but rose to the occasion.  Sara Zeigler, our Time Trial "specialist", was able to break away with Cat 1 racer Kristy Schefenacker.  They stayed away for a good part of the race.  But, near the end, Amanda Watson made a gutsy move and got away from the pack and was able to bridge to the 2 women far ahead!  Very exciting.  Amanda was able to take the Cat 3 win.  Kudos to BOTH women!

For the seven First Timers, Melissa Talent was the 1st finisher, followed by Anathea Powell, and then Ruth Powell.  Thanks to those ladies for giving it a go!

THIS WEEK-END!

Looks like the lazy days of summer are upon us.  No Series or local events this week-end, but I am sure that we will all be training for the remaining events still to come.  Plan on the Time Trial next week-end AND the STAGE RACE the following week-end.  So, take your bike to the beach!

SERIES Events Coming Up!

August 9—Fall Church Creek Time Trial (Cambridge, MD): Another MABRA Championship…for the Time Trial.   ALL Cat 3 & 4 Women should do this event...even those 7 new women.  A time trial is a good place to get started with racing or to improve your threshold power for the upcoming road races!  A great well-known course with flats and WIND!   You must pre-register:

UPCOMING Events!

August 15-17--A Special Road Trip Event—Tour de Millersburg (Millersburg, PA): A Stage Race in PA where Bob Roll will be present!  The promoter worked with us women and is not only providing a quality women’s race, but a separate Category 4 women’s race!  All women should put this on their calendar…events like this need our support to continue!  August 15-17:  http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=6541   This event will be a good substitute for the Tour de Toona.

Every Wednesday--Greenbelt Training Races (Greenbelt Park, MD):  The C race is good for some mid-week training.  The *good* thing about this race is that you can get back into the pack at the top of the hill!  The purpose is to train with the group, and not to ride around the course by yourself.  :-)   http://www.route1velo.com/GreenbeltInfo.asp

July 25-27--KENDA Bike Fest (Hancock, MA): http://www.bicyclefest.com/  CHECK this link for all of the recent updates!

August 9-- Maryland Senior Olympics (Cambridge, MD): Calling all 50+ women!  5K and 10K individual time trials will be held on the Church Creek course for the Maryland State ITT Senior Championships. Flat, flat, flat, and fast (but let’s not forget the wind)!  It's also the state qualifier for the 2009 National Senior Games to be held at Stanford University in California.

The 2008 Criterium Champions for the Cat 3 & 4 women are Elizabeth Harlow and Ainoah Perez!  Last week-end’s races were fun and everyone stayed upright in that funky turn.  The Cat 4 Women’s race was slow in starting, but the action picked up later in the game.  The Cat 3 Women bolted from the start in a field mixed with top Cat 1 & 2 riders.  Elizabeth was 4th overall, with Jen Cheng 5th overall.  GREAT showing by our Cat 3 women!

Linh Tran & Amanda Watson wore their Points Leader Jersey in both races.  The very nice pink jerseys threw a few of the riders off!  Will Amanda be able to stay on top for the remaining 5 races?  Linh will have to fight to dominate amongst the many strong Cat 4 competitors…it looks like other Cat 4 contenders have thrown their hat into the ring.

THIS WEEK-END!

July 20—The Hunny Bop! (Suitland, MD): A perfect race for novice and beginner racers.  This course is short and flat with a wide closed course.  Many race options for women!  The Cat 4 women who are getting ready to upgrade need to race twice and the masters women can race twice also, in the 40+ Women’s race (scores towards the MABRA Women’s 40+ BAR)!  Jill DiMauro, owner of Proteus Bicycles, will be present with her BLENDER BIKE to whip up smoothies after the Cat 4 Women’s race, and hold an informal discussion on “Shop Tawk”.  In addition to lots of fun primes and prizes, remember that the Top 3 “1st timers” get prizes, also…perfect opportunity to bring that friend who always threatens to race!  Please pre-register TODAY (this is an event FOR WOMEN by women!):

2008 MABRA Cat 4 / Cat 3 Women's Race Series

(part of the national CYCLING MADE REAL Women's Series)

Welcome the MABRA Women's Series e-mail.  The Women's Series is a group of selected MABRA events suitable for Cat 3 & 4 women's development.  The objective is to have women of all skill levels come out and experience bike racing at where they can achieve success.  And success is not necessarily about winning!

The 4th of July signifies “mid-season” and most of us had a long week-end of not racing and relaxing(??).  But not for some.  A handful of MABRA women made the trek up to Fitchburg, MA to compete in one of the oldest stage races in the nation, and one of the last east-coast stage events!  Needless to say, climbing a ski mountain is not for everyone, but all of our locals hung in there.  Full results can be viewed here: http://www.longsjo.com/Results.html

Finally, the Series Results have been updated!  It looks like the second battle for the Points Leader Jersey continues to be held by both of the former leaders, Amanda Watson (Cat 3) and Linh Tran (Cat 4)!  Excellent job, Ladies!  Although Amanda has quite a lead over the Cat 3 women, Linh will have to fight to dominate amongst the many strong Cat 4 competitors.  There are only 6 events remaining in the series and there are also a few women who are reaching their upgrade limits, so there may be changes ahead in the rankings!  It’s also a good opportunity for those of you who haven’t been racing much to make a “come back” for the second half of the season.

THIS WEEK-END!

July 12—Hagerstown Criterium (Hagerstown, MD): This home-town event in neighborhood streets is the MABRA Senior Crit Championship!  The course is fast and flat with a slight rise before just one challenging turn.  Registration on Bike Reg closes Tuesday evening.  Put the promoter’s mind at ease and register before then on-line!

http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=6731

SERIES Events Coming Up!

July 19—Giro di Coppi Road Race (Barnsville, MD): Another MABRA Championship…for the Road Race, this week.  A great course with gradual climbs (nothing steep).  A combined Cat 3/4 field adds to the fun!  THIS event requires pre-registration; NO race-day registration!  http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=6662

July 20—The Hunny Bop! (Suitland, MD): What a great way to top off the week-end than a true crit to spin out your legs after a road race!  A perfect race for novice and beginner racers. Please pre-register:

2008 MABRA Cat 4 / Cat 3 Women's Race Series

(part of the national CYCLING MADE REAL Women's Series)

Welcome the MABRA Women's Series e-mail.  The Women's Series is a group of selected MABRA events suitable for Cat 3 & 4 women's development.  The objective is to have women of all skill levels come out and experience bike racing at where they can achieve success.  And success is not necessarily about winning!

This past week-end’s stage race in Washington County turned out to be a good event for the Cat 3 & 4 women; hopefully a good experience.  The road race for the “Open” women proved challenging, but not for Erin Silliman.  She was in a 4-woman break of Cat 1 & 2 women on the last lap and pulled away for the overall win on the last set of hills!  An *amazing* finish!  Although the Cat 4 filed was quite small, 10 women stayed together for the final sprint up the final climb.  Ainhoa Perez squeaked out another win!

The next day’s events took us to the town of Boonsboro for the TT.  This was the last event for the Cat 4 Women.  Amy Westenfeld took her victory there with the fastest time, and Sara Zeigler showed her strength by topping the Cat 3 Women.  Finally, Erin Silliman was again in a break in the Williamsport Crit, and took the winning Cat 3 slot.  Congratulations to ALL of those who raced and stuck it out!  Next year, the promoter promises to make the crit more accessible for the Cat 4 women.  J

Series points still have not been updated, but are current through the Murad RR.  An announcement will be sent when they are completed.  The next series race isn’t until July 12th, but there is a CAT 3/4 Road Race this Saturday in PA.  (see below)

THIS WEEK-END!

There are NO Series events this week-end…but,

June 28—Brownstown Road Race (Lancaster, PA): Pre-Registration closes Thursday; no race-day reg!  This race is on a 5-mile loop.  The promoter promises that he will add laps to meet upgrade requirements if more women register.  This puts those who want upgrade points in a difficult situation!  If any of you want to DO this event, please e-mail me.  I will gather your names and see how many interested women there are, and report back.  This may help determine if it will be worth the trip.

The rain held out last Saturday and it was a good day for the time trial.  That course is flat, but known for its wind, so no one was disappointed with that!  There were a few calamities that occurred, like missing start times, flats, and other excuses of ‘How I could have done better if…’  ;-)

Looks like Cynthia Anderson’s training at Hains Point paid off, as she earned the Cat 3 Women’s fastest time.  As for the Cat 4Women, it looks like Rhonda Abernathy, who only does time trials took the win in her specialty.  Good job, and I’m sure that we’ll see better blazing times in August!  Full results here: http://mylaps.com/results/newResults.jsp?id=843688

Series points will be updated by next week, but are current through the Murad RR.  The next series race isn’t until July 12th, so get your fill this week-end!  See below…

THIS WEEK-END!

June 21-22—Tour of Washington County (Hagerstown, MD): Pre-Registration closes TONIGHT!  This is a great event with three great venues and promises to be a fun week-end of racing!  Make it a ‘road trip’ and stay overnight for this (sort-of) stage race!  The road race is a great course with some rolling hills.  The TT is the well-known Boonsboro course, and the crit is the down-home Williamsport venue.  All good stuff.  If you can’t do both days, one-day registration is an option.  You can register for the RR, TT, or Crit individually.  Come out and make the scene while still supporting this event!  More details: http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=6386

Funny weather, isn’t it?  Instant August heat in June, while the arm warmers still are not packed away.  Threats of torrential rain interfere with our training, but spare us at the Murad Road Race…kinda.  The weather forecast was grim for the afternoon and sketchy for the morning.  Fortunately, the rain held off over the race course.  But, off in the distance, some dark clouds loomed with a few sparks of lightning.  Not too far away at Point of Rocks, hail was reported.  So, with still 1 lap still to go, the motor officials pulled up to each women’s peleton near the last leg of their current lap to say that “THIS was it…the last lap.”  Well, if any team had any plans for a last lap attack or break-away, all bets were off.  It was show time, and for those in the right position at the right time, the finish unfolded.  Ainhoa Perez wins another race for the Cat 4 Women, and Erin Silliman takes the Cat 3 win and notably, 3rd overall in the 123 race!  Great job!  As both women continue to have a great season!  By the way, it never did rain, hail, or anything on us.

Although not part of the Women’s Series, a shout out to Jen Cheng, a Cat 3, who won this past week-end’s Ride Sally Ride women’s event.  Way to go, Jen!  Also, many of our MABRA women hiked up the Philly to participate in the huge women’s pro event, The Liberty Classic.  HUGE Kudos goes out to our own Lorena Candrian, who finished an amazing 15th!  WOW and Congratulations!

THIS WEEK-END!

June 14--Church Creek Time Trial (Cambridge, MD): For any new woman who wants to start racing...this is a 'safe' way to get started!  Lots of categories and opportunities to race against the clock.  See where you stand amongst your peers.  Benchmark this week’s time again in August on the same course!  Church Creek is a long-time favorite course for a 40K TT.  If you like TTs don't miss this, as it's one of the few in the area. On-Line registration, ONLY!  And it closes tonight:

2008 MABRA Cat 4 / Cat 3 Women's Race Series
(part of the national CYCLING MADE REAL Women's Series)

Welcome the MABRA Women's Series e-mail.  The Women's Series is a group of selected MABRA events suitable for Cat 3 & 4 women's development.  The objective is to have women of all skill levels come out and experience bike racing at where they can achieve success.  And success is not necessarily about winning!

What a great week-end for the Women's Series!  Two really good races, fabulous weather, and fun courses.  Bike Jam had a large combined field of Cat 3 and 4 women from around the region, so that added some spice to the competition.  Turns out that Lea Ann Beatty from PA was able to hold the long, uphill sprint to the finish for the overall win, while Ainhoa Perez snapped up another Cat 4 win in the field.  An honorable mention goes out to Erin Silliman, who was 12th in the Pro/123 Women's race, and the 1st Cat 3!

RFK provided many opportunities for women to race: cat 4, 3, 40+, and Pro/12. (Wow!)  This fast, flat course doesn't usually allow break-aways to last (unless it's Laura Van Gilder!).  The "out-of-town" girls made a week-end out of it and raced again.  Turns out that Lea Ann's Cat 4 teammate, Whitney Servino, captured the win.  Despite having Betty Tyrell, a multiple, multiple National Time Trial Champion racing with the Cat 3 women, nothing stayed away.  Betty tried to motor away a few times, but was reeled back.  She tried right up to the end, until the final hairpin turn, but Judy Wexler wasn't going to let that happen...Judy's sprint exploded after the turn for a clean win!

After the racing, the Cat 4 women got together to award Linh Tran the Series Points Jersey.  The Cat 3 jersey was later awarded to Amanda Watson after the C3 race, along with photos including the day's Cat 3 winner.  The photos can be viewed at this link:

Upgrade News: Congratulations to Christine Wehlburg and Susanna Nazarian for their Cat 2 upgrade!  Excellent news, Ladies!

THIS WEEK-END!
May 31--Murad Road Race (Poolesville, MD): A Cat 4-only road race!  Cat 3 women race with the 1/2.  This course is a great for most.  No serious hills and a fast straight-away.  On-line registration closes TONIGHT!  Be sure to register today...let's have a lot of women race...it's MUCH more fun that way.  Also, remember that finishing gets you series points, so keep riding!http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=6294

SERIES Events Coming Up!
June 14--Church Creek Time Trial (Cambridge, MD): For any new woman who wants to start racing...this is a 'safe' way to get started!  Church Creek is a long-time favorite course for a 40K TT.  If you like TTs, don't miss this, as it's one of the few in the area.

UPCOMING Events!

June 8--Liberty Classic (Philidelphia, PA): http://www.procyclingtour.com/
July 25-27--KENDA Bike Fest (Hancock, MA): http://www.bicyclefest.com/

This past week-end's rainy weather didn't keep the women away from the Southern Maryland Crit, and either did the "11 turns"!  It sounds like the course was nice and all riders rode well.  Dori Buckenthal took another win for the Cat 4 women and Erin Silliman not only took the Cat 3 victory, but the overall win in the Sr. Women's race!  Fabulous work, Ladies!  Here is a link to photos from Sue:

There is a HUGE error noted on the Series list of events.  This Saturday's BIKE JAM event is not listed as part of the series, but it IS in fact, part of the Cat 3 & 4 Series!  The results from So. MD have not been received yet, so updated series results pending.  (Please report any noted errors.)  Pre-registration for Bike Jam closes tonight!  Weather looks PERFECT for racing this week-end!

As previously mentioned, the first Series Leader jersey winner for the Cat 3 Series goes to Amanda Watson.  After 2 wins and top 5 finishes, Amanda rightfully earned the jersey!  The Cat 4 Series Leader jersey winner has been determined from this past Sunday.  It looks like Linh Tran was able to hold her lead and take the jersey, despite Dori's win (her team mate)!  BOTH jerseys will now be awarded at RFK this Sunday.

THIS WEEK-END!
May 24--Bike Jam/Kelley Cup (Baltimore, MD): A long-time favorite and NRC event, and the only one in Charm City.  Good course for a Cat 3/4 combined field.  Festivities go on all day in the park.

May 25--RFK Crit (Washington, DC): Flat and fast and lots of women's fields!  The 'Older' Ladies can race twice and do the 40+ event.  Good surface and wide open course.  Come sit under the trees and grab a burger from the grill and watch the other races.

2008 MABRA Cat 4 / Cat 3 Women's Race Series
(part of the national CYCLING MADE REAL Women's Series)

It was pretty amazing to see how many Cat 3 & 4 women (47!) showed up to race at the Poolesville Road Race!  There are a lot of stories out there of how women fared through the gravel lap after lap, how riders got dropped one by one, and how others stuck it out while some said faggetaboutit.  Good stuff.  But in the end, the main field was determined not soley by strength, but by who was devoid of crashes...or being caught behind one.  Ultimately, it was Amanda Watson who jumped away from the main pack on the last lap to ride in solo for the overall & Cat 3 win!  Ainoha Perez won the field sprint and was the 1st cat 4 to finish.  Congratulations, Ladies!  What a race, and what a great turn-out for the women!

A special congrats goes out to Susanna Nazarian, a Cat 3 who opted to race the Women's 123 race.  Despite being alone against other well-represented teams, Susanna was able to get away and take the win!  Fabulous job, Girl!

The Series list of events and results have been updated.  (Please report any noted errors.)  The first Series Leader jersey winner for the Cat 3 Series goes to Amanda Watson.  After 2 wins and top 5 finishes, Amanda rightfully earned the jersey!  The Cat 4 Series Leader jersey winner will be determined after the series race this Sunday.  It looks like Linh Tran has it, but her team mate chance to snatch it with a win!  BOTH jerseys will be awarded at Bike Jam.

THIS WEEK-END!
May 18--Southern Maryland Crit (LaPlata, MD): This is a new race venue, and it sounds like fun.  Closer to many of us than the former Leonardtown race.  A Cat 4-ONLY race!  Let's show up in good numbers so the promoter will be sure to keep it that way.  A good opportunity to get some upgrade points.  On-Line Registration closes Thursday.

The Series list of events and results have been updated.  Please report any noted errors.
It is disappointing to see that some promoters are NOT providing quality women's fields this year.  Some promoters have eliminated the Cat 4 race from their events.  This is bad news.  The Series this year is about 5 races below past years.  What does this mean?  It means that more women need to race and be at these events to prove that we deserve our own fields.

For those of you who have raced the "Quicksilver" race in the past, you know that for years they have provided a Cat 4 women-only field.  THIS year they cut that race out of their event!  This year's event is (ironically) called "Ride, Sally, Ride".  Hmmmm.  If anyone would like to e-mail the promoter and respectfully express your dismay, please contact DAVID from Whole Wheel Velo at davewiesenhahn@...

THIS WEEK-END!
May 3--Poolesville Road Race (Pooeslville, MD): This is a long-standing challenging road race, not because of the hills, but because of the section of gravel that adds the excitement!  The reports are back...the gravel is pretty compacted this year, but look out for the pot holes!  NCVC has been faithful in providing women's fields, so we need to populate them.  A combined women's 3/4 field gives the Cat 4 women an opportunity to learn from the 3 Women.  Good opportunity for upgrade points.  On-Line Registration closes TONIGHT!

UPCOMING Events!
May 4--US Air Force Crit (Crystal City, VA): One of the first of professional bike races happening in our area!  Pro Men only, but still a great event and watch.  Being there to support NCR events shows the "non-cycling" community how much we support this sport, so spectator numbers are important.

The past two series events occurred the first week-end in April.  The Walkersville Road Race was teased by the threat of horrible weather, but it turned out to be a beautiful day, albeit a bit windy, but we expected that as a given on that course!  There was some kind of confusion where the Officials decided to cut a lap out of the race.  This reeked havoc on everyone's tactical plans.  Pam Frentzel was the one who was able to stave off her rivals for the win!  The Cat 3 Women raced with the 1/2 Women.  Susanna Nazarian was right up there with the 1/2 women (3rd overall) despite not having any teammates and took the Cat 3 win!  GREAT job, Susanna!

The next day at the Tyson's Corner Crit, the weather WAS really wet and chilly this time.  The rain held off for the women's races, and the road was, for the most part, dry.  There were 31 Cat 4 starters, so that was good!  Dana Cuomo, a PA racer, won the race in a field sprint, followed closely by the others.  For the Cat 3 women, again mixed with the 1/2 women, PA JUNIOR took the Cat 3 win (and 4th overall), Mary Costelloe.

Series results have been updated; apologies for the delay.  UPGRADE points are carefully being assigned based on the new USAC guidelines!

UPCOMING Events!
If you have Cat 1 or 2 women riders on your team, or as friends, please pass this on for THIS week-end at Tour of Ephrata:
Women placing in the top 2 who are cat 1 or 2 riders and NOT racing for a team already invited to Nature Valley will be invited to race on a composite team with some funding help. There is still time for talented, out of town riders to plan to race this stage race.

Riders need to sign up if they are interested - Tracey Lea will be at the race all weekend with a registration form - so riders should find her at registration most of the time, around the event area, or located by finding the FUJI van.

May 4--US Air Force Crit (Crystal City, VA): One of the first of professional bike races happening in our area!  Pro Men only, but still a great event to support and watch

SAD NEWS:  The long-standing three-day points race that joins up with the Pro Tour and has been part of the Women's Series for several years will not occur this season.  This is a great disappointment, as it has always been a great experience for many of us.
Revisions to the Series events (additions AND deletions) coming soon.

2008 MABRA Cat 4 / Cat 3 Women's Race Series
(part of the national CYCLING MADE REAL Women's Series)

Welcome the the MABRA Women's Series e-mail.  The Women's Series is a group of selected MABRA events suitable for Cat 3 & 4 women's development.  The objective is to have women of all skill levels come out and experience bike racing at where they can achieve success.  And success is not necessarily about winning!

The first two races of the Race Series have already occurred.  Congratulations to Dori Buckenthal (C4) and Amanda Watson (C3) who captured the Cat 4 & 3 wins respectively at the UMD President's Crit.  Amanda maintained her solo break from the field for several laps to cross solo acros the finish.  This past week-end, the women braved threatening weather to race this challenging (yet fun!) road race in Charlottesville, VA.  There was freezing rain and sleet earlier in the morning.  Although the chilly temperature persisted, the roads were dry by the time the women went off.  More congrats goes out to Linh Tran (C4), who barrelled down the final straight and held her killer lead the long distance by a tire's width!  Laura Cook was the first C3 woman to cross the line amongst the highly-stacked power house of 123 women in the field.

Series results will be updated later this week.

THIS week-end has two more events.  If you did not register on-line, you are still able to register the day-of the event.  If you are a CAT 4, you do NOT have to pay an 'unattached fee', but may have to pay a late fee.

THIS WEEK-END!
April 5--Tour of Walkersville Road Race (Walkersville, MD): This 8 mile loop has some rolling hills, false flats, and flats into the wind (sometimes)!  A Cat 4 Women-only field makes this race less threatening, right?  There are only 16 women pre-registered, and there are lots of first-timers.  We would LOVE to see the field sizes be over 20 (more like 30!) for each series race!  For more information check:

April 6--Tyson's Corner Circut Race (Tyson's Corner, VA): This is a fun course with a fast back side and gradual climb to the finish line.  Lots of work-recover-work-recover!  Same goes for this event:  Cat 4-only field with lots of new names.  It's not too late:

The first race of the Race Series will be this Saturday.  This event is an interesting criterium with a little bit of everything.  Come out and test your legs to see how that winter training paid off...or...how much training you still need to do!  Please...do NOT wait "until you are in better shape."  You may surprise yourself.

For the women that are new to this list, please subscribe to our Yahoo list.  This is a closed list, so there is no responding e-mail traffic.  (see info on subscribing below)

THIS WEEK-END!
March 15--UMD President's Crit (College Park, MD): Registration is on Bike Reg ONLY, so don't miss out.  Registration closes Thursday night at midnight!

SERIES Events Coming Up!
March 30--Jefferson Cup Road Race (Charlottesville, VA): Unfortunately, registration is closed for this event.  The promoter did not communicate her intention to close the field prior to reaching the field limit, so many of you are out of luck.  :-(

2007 MABRA Cat 4 / Cat 3 Women's Race Series
(part of the national CYCLING MADE REAL Women's Series)

Congratulations to Christina Briseno and Robin Zimmerly, the two Women's Series winners!  Christina did all but 2 of the series events, and it paid off.  Not only did she win the Cat 4 Series, she was one of the 4 top winners (maxed with 150 points) of the MABRA BAR.  In addition to a lot of good racing, we watched Christina improve as the race season went along.  Erin Silliman came in 2nd.  Although she started her 1st season of racing late, she did well.  Erin will be racing as a Cat 3 next season.  Lesley Golener was the 3rd place finisher.  This was also Lesley's 1st race season.  Despite her mid-season upgrade, Lesley was able to maintain her high placing.  Along with Christina, both Erin and Lesley were top Cat 4 BAR winners!

Robin Zimmerly upgraded to Cat 3 early on in the season and raced consistently well earning her the Cat 3 Series win. Sara Zeigler followed closely for 2nd place.  Sara also showed impressive and progressive improvement in her results as the season went on.  Strong-rider, Sonja Evers, held her 3rd place position despite being upgraded out of the series!  We look forward to seeing Sonja race next season as a Cat 2.

Kudos go out to these women, who obviously contributed a lot to our region with their dedication to the sport and sportsmanship.  We look forward to following their successes in 2008!  And of course, a big THANK YOU goes out to ALL of the women who consistently came out and supported the Series races.  "Showing up" is what helps to grow women's racing, and you all have helped make another banner year for women's racing!

2007 MABRA Cat 4 / Cat 3 Women's Race Series
(part of the national CYCLING MADE REAL Women's Series)

These past few week-ends have been great.  Gotta love this weather!  Hopefully, everyone had some good time off and are ready to finish up the remaining season strong over these next two weeks.

The FINAL races of the Series start this week-end with the Church Creek Time Trial, and next week at Turkey Day.  BOTH are events that women new to the sport should try!  Looks Like the top 3 Cat 4 women have their places locked up!!  The #1Cat 3 rider has that slot wrapped, as well.  But, the other places and PRIZES for top 10 (in Cat 4) and top 8 (in Cat 3) are still up for grabs!

And for all of you Senior women, please consider racing at the Wilmington Grand Prix this coming Saturday.  The promoting MABRA Club would love to see this inaugural event (with a great women's prize list!) be a success for future events.  Think you're all that?  Get out there and race against Laura Van Gilder.  :-D  MABRA women...we need your support!

After all of this, many of you will transition to Cyclocross...see below!

THIS WEEK-END!
September 9--Church Creek Time Trial (Cambridge, MD): One of our favorite 40K courses.  Never did it?  It's a MUST!  Flat, low trafficked roads...with (maybe) some wind!  MUST pre-reg, & it closes at NOON tomorrow.  Bring along a friend and show her the ropes.  More info:

SERIES Events Coming Up!
September 16--Turkey Day (Upper Marlboro, MD): Another long-time favorite that marks the *end* of the road season!  Final points for the Cat 3 & 4 Series.  Most of us know the course well.  It's a large circuit loop with wide open (easy) turns.  We'll be there making a day of it with post-race snacks & beverages.  Beginner women should BE here!

**Introduction to Road Racing: November 4--Wheaton, MD:  Follow up She Got Bike with the next step...a RACE clinic!  Indoor classroom presentation to give you all of the info that you need to get a jump on the 2008 race season!  Afternoon session includes on-the-bike skill sessions.  Pre-Register on Bike Reg, only.  Info will be posted soon at: www.artemisracing.org

The 7 race series in the metro-DC area kicks-off on 23 September in Baltimore. There are two women's categories - B for the cat 3/4s and elite for cat 1-3 cyclocross categories. Series title sponsor Bikereg.com has also ponied up some great cash for the women's elite races.

This is a great opportunity to have some fun, learn bike handling skills, stay in shape, and to win a MABRA series jersey and medal.
Check the MABRA website for the series schedule and rules. Also check out www.bikereg. com to register for the races and also to see the listing of all races in the area. There's a race in the Mid-Atlantic just about every weekend. Don't miss out this year.

OK, Ladies! If you are even *thinking* about doing this race, busta move!
It's not like the field sizes for the women are looking so bad right now,
but this race is mainly FOR women & the promoter needs re-assurance.
(Although I think that his request for ONE HUNDRED registrants is asking a
bit much, every little bit helps.)

Congratulations to our MABRA Championship Time Trial winners!  Cynthia Anderson swept the other Cat 4 Women by a decent 17 seconds and Robin Zimmerly handily took the win for the Cat 3 Women with over a minute ahead!  The turn-out was surprising low for some reason, but the times of those who showed were right on.

Conversely, the road race on Saturday had a great turn-out for the women.  Melanie Swartz, one of our Cyclo-cross extraordinaire racers, was the 1st Cat 3 to cross the line for the Cat 3 win.

KUDOS to all of the MABRA women who went out of town to race the week-end in Christiana, PA, at the stage race!  Looks like just about half of the 45 women field was made up of MABRA women.  A good experience, I'm sure.  There were even a few MABRA Cat 4 women there.  Amazing job by Amanda Watson, a Cat 4, who finished 5th overall just behind (mostly) Cat 1 women!

The FINAL race of the Series is up and coming.  Looks Like the top 3 Cat 4 women have their places locked up!!  The #1Cat 3 rider has that slot wrapped, as well.  But, the other places and PRIZES for top 10 (in Cat 4) and top 8 (in Cat 3) are open for surprises!  HUGE kudos goes out to Sonja Evers for her many wins as she still remains on top.  She has reached mandatory upgrade a while ago, and has been awaiting her Cat 2 upgrade.

THIS WEEK-END!
August 18--Carlisle Grand Prix (Carlisle, PA): Although WE have no races this week-end, the Cat 3 & 4 women can still race in their own fields.  Get out there and test your legs against some different women!  A good chance to get those upgrade points!  (NOT a series event, but an event that has huge support for women!  We should support it.) 2007 MABRA Cat 4 / Cat 3 Women's Race Series
(part of the national CYCLING MADE REAL Women's Series)

Tour de Toona was a blast and the women of MABRA had a great showing and fantastic finishes!  We had multiple MABRA women on the Podium daily.  It was a fun time and a good experience.  Series results have not yet been tabulated, but look for some BIG changes coming soon!  Full results available at: http://www.tourdetoona.com/results/day/2007-07-27.htm

Registration CLOSES tonight for the MABRA Championship Time Trial, and only a handful of Cat 3 & 4 Women are registered. (???)  The weather forecast is good and the course is nice.  It's an out and back, so *seeing* other riders lessens the pain...just a little!  For any NEW women, now is the time to join us.  Ladies, bring out your friends who have been "thinking" about racing!  Remind them it's not about how "in shape" or how "fast" they are; it's about getting out there and just doing it!

Also, the road race on Saturday needs women to make their field more fun!  It's great to see a lot of Cat 3 Women registered, but it would be great to see more women there.

Still wanna race more??  Check out the PA race below that has THREE women's fields!!  The promoter has cordially invited the MABRA women to join in, and the Series schedule for August is wide open.

THIS WEEK-END!
August 4--Pleasant Valley Road Race (Westminster, MD): This is a NEW race course described as a gently rolling course on nice roads out in the country!  Part of the Cat 3 Series.

August 5--Boonsboro Time Trial (MABRA Championship) (Boonsboro, MD): A great out-and-back course that is PERFECT for any new woman who STILL has not tried a race yet!  The course goes out fast, and then a long steady rise back to the finish.

SERIES Events Coming Up!
August 18--Carlisle Grand Prix (Carlisle, PA): Get out there and test your legs against some different women!  A good chance to get those upgrade points!  (NOT a series event, but an event that has huge support for women!) More info:

2007 MABRA Cat 4 / Cat 3 Women's Race Series
(part of the national CYCLING MADE REAL Women's Series)

The Cat 4 Women got a good road race in this past week-end to boost their series standings!  (Those of you going to race in Altoona will gain a huge points advantage.)  The weather this past weekend was perfect for the repeated rolling climbs of Barnesville.  There were a few beginners in the race, and just about everyone stuck it out and finished.  Sonja Evers was easily given the overall and Cat 3 win (the word was that no one wanted to chase her...huh?).  Christina Briseno was the Cat 4 winner...her 1st win this season!  Great job to all of the 34 women who raced on such a challenging course.

The Silver Spring Grand Prix on Sunday was fast and furious, and a great venue to watch the action.  With the fast straight-aways and tight turns, and tough competition, I'm sure it was a good race.  Our top 3 Cat 3 winners were Sinead Miller, Sonja Evers, and Tracy Rankin.  Fantastic job, Girls!  Lesley Golenor took a hard fall towards the end of the race and went to the hospital.  She had no obvious injuries at the time, and luckily, she is OK.  Feel better, Lesley.

THIS WEEK-END!
July 27-29--Tour de Toona (Altoona, PA): Registration closes at FIVE PM tonight!  An annual favorite POINTS race, and a good team-bonding road trip!  Mingle with the pros in this small town atmosphere.  Three 20-mile events.  PRE-REG ONLY!  This is an event where the MABRA women join together to beat the "other" competition!  Contact me if you need assistance with rooms, etc. (wag3@...)

SERIES Events Coming Up!

With not many race opportunities in August, don't miss out on these two events!

2007 MABRA Cat 4 / Cat 3 Women's Race Series
(part of the national CYCLING MADE REAL Women's Series)

This week's Chantilly Crit had a good mix of women.  The size of the field was a surprise to the promoter, as our numbers were right up there with many of the men's fields. Jen Cheng was the 1st Cat 3 finisher, as ahe continues to do well since her upgrade. Despite not having a Women's 4 field, the 6 Cat 4 women who did the "open" race fared very well, considering the immediate fast pace and the repeated long uphill drag to the finish.  The promoter might consider a seperate field next year!  Thanks to ALL of the women who raced.

Many of you have said that you will be racing in Altoona.  Remeber that you can only register via Bike Reg!  The Tour de Toona in 2 weeks.  MABRA women always have a huge presence at this event, and the Cat 4 Women need these 3 events to advance in the Series!

THIS WEEK-END!
July 21--Giro di Coppi (Barnesboro, MD): A 3/4 combined field that is great training for Toona!  The pre-reg is growing and it looks to be a good event.  The course is challenging and we don't get many road races like this, so take advantage of it.  Again, the Cat 4 Women need to participate to hold their Series standing.

July 22--The Drink More Water Silver Spring Criterium (Silver Spring, MD): This is a great event that goes right through the new Silver Spring Downtown area.  A fast course with a huge prize list.  The Cat 3 Women get another event in the Cat 3 Series.  Prizes provided by this Series.  Even if you don't race, being a spectator there is a blast!  http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=4914

Look for your opportunity to support Artemis Novice Women & Junior Development by becoming a "supporting" member of Artemis.  The advantage of this is access to Signal Financial Credit Union.  Find out more details at the event.  As a non-profit organization, Signal Financial is sponsoring the Kid's Races and are providing helmets to all of the kids, so they want to support the cycling community with a good service and great rates (MUCH better than your bank!)

SERIES Events Coming Up!

July 27-29--Tour de Toona (Altoona, PA): You should already be planning on this event!  An annual favorite POINTS race, and a good team-bonding road trip!  Mingle with the pros in this small town atmosphere.  Three 20-mile events.  PRE-REG ONLY!  You need to book your hotel rooms...many are already full!

2007 MABRA Cat 4 / Cat 3 Women's Race Series
(part of the national CYCLING MADE REAL Women's Series)

The Cat 3 and 4 women dominated the numbers in the Hagerstown Crit last Saturday.  It was a good race on a mostly shaded course, and the women, unlike the men, were crash free.  Some of the Cat 3 women scored some good upgrade points!  The local folks were very supportive and friendly; some even sported their own First-Aid kit for use on some of the guys!  Thanks to all of you who made the trip.

As some of you may have heard, the Dutch County Stage Race in PA (designed to provide for upgrade points for Cat 5 men & Cat 4 men & women), *Cancelled* the Women's field for lack of pre-registration!!!  This was really absurd, as it was cancelled well in advance of the closing date.  We all know that we'll show up to race, but nervous promoters WANT to see our commitment ahead of time.  I am *SURE* that there would have been 20+ women there.  There were only 20-30 men in the various field, so go figure.  I don't think that MABRA promoters would ever cancel a race due to lack of pre-registration, because they know that I beat the bushes to get the women out there, but beware...your support is needed in the region!

Also, let's see a good turn-out for the Tour de Toona coming up in less than a month.  MABRA women always have a huge presence at this event, and it's always a fun time!  Some of you are starting to register, but let's not let this on slip away...register!

THIS WEEK-END!
July 14----Chantilly Crit (Chantilly, VA): This is another "Open" event combined with Cat 3 Women.  The course is not technical or difficult, so Cat 4 Women can readily compete in this race.  Weather looks good, and we get to sleep in!
Pre-registration closes at noon TODAY!
