David, as you possibly already know, the Argentine is essentially
a Colt, built on Colt machinery to Colt specs, either by Colt
personnel while training Argentine workers or after Colt left
Argentina and turned the equipment over to them. If it was made
before 1927 when Colt left Argentina it is worth slightly more.

It should command nearly the same price as an old well used Colt
1911A1. If it is operable and not rusty it is worth at least
$400, regardless of the finish. If it is a pre 1927 early model
marked "Colt" it could be worth more. Regards, Jack F

$550 for an Argentinian clone at 70% condition is way too much. On the
other hand, $800 for a Para Ordnance, depending on the model, is an
average (if not a good) price.

So I took my misbehaving 1911 to the range tonight, and I found out the
cause of the issue. It wasn't the gun at all, it was the adjustable sights.
Every time I pulled the trigger, the rear sight moved a little bit more. By
the time I'd emptied a seven round mag, the rear sight had moved as far over
to the right as it would go, changing the point of impact by about 4 to 5
inches. Guess that might explain why the point of impact was changing, huh?

The good news is that this gives me an excuse to send it off to Novak for 3
dot night sights. Problem solved!

Thanks again for everyone's help. Sorry it wasn't something more exotic. :)

You know, you raise a good question here and I am not sure of the answer.
This is going to require some additional testing to see if heat or dirt is
the culprit. I will see if I can sneak off to the range a couple of nights
this week for some tests. I figure I will put a hundred rounds through it
one night to dirty it up and then fire some through it again on a second
night without a cleaning in between. I will report back with the results in
a few days.

-Tim

You did not exactly spell it out, but I am assuming it drifts as it
heats up? Or does it drift with accumulation of whatever you are
removing when cleaning it, since that seems to bring it back on
target?
My first thought is that the barrel is under stress when locked up,
and this would probably show by the hood leaning against one side of
the guides in the breech. As it warms up the chamber moves slightly
to one side. Regards, Jack F

All things are possible I suppose, but I haven't experienced this with any
of my other handguns. I shoot right handed, and when I get tired, I tend to
'pull' to the right rather than 'push' to the left. I will definitely see if
I can put it on a rest when I take it to the range this week though. The
weakest link in the system is probably the shooter, so I might as well rule
that out as a possibility.

Are you sure this isn't a shooter fatigue issue? There would have to be
something seriously wrong with the barrel, slide, bushing, or all three to
cause a HUGE deviation like that at 25 feet. If it is the gun, I'm 90% sure
the only solution is to fit a new barrel. Get it heated up until it starts
to drift then put it in a machine rest or have someone else shoot it.

As far as I know, all Series 70 pistols including S70
Gold Cups were originally assembled with the finger
bushing. Because there was a lot of controversy about
the reliability of those, they were often replaced
after market with the solid National Match bushing.

Before the Gold Cup, the top of the line was the
National Match pistol. Later it became the S70
Gold Cup National Match. Pre '68 Nat'l Match
pistols in good shape bring a premium price.

Can you tell if the barrel hood rides along one side
of the breech guides when locking up?
      regards, Jack F

You did not exactly spell it out, but I am assuming it drifts as it
heats up? Or does it drift with accumulation of whatever you are
removing when cleaning it, since that seems to bring it back on
  target?
My first thought is that the barrel is under stress when locked up,
and this would probably show by the hood leaning against one side of
the guides in the breech. As it warms up the chamber moves slightly
to one side. Regards, Jack F

The base does screw off. It is very annoying, but not impossible, to reassemble
it. Be sure to protect your eyes. It may or may not be staked. Use a drop of
GREEN (very low strength, weakest they make) Loctite on it if you do not wish to
restake it.

Dave, wash it with soap and water to remove any chemical that made it rust.
then wipe it with grease. I usually find that there is some chemical, salt
or acid etc that acts as an oxidizer or collects moisture and starts rust.
