Subject: [CoastalCyclists] Changing of the Guard
The December club meeting is just next week. This means that we'll be
selecting club officers for the coming year and thinking about how to
improve cycling in the Lowcountry. I'm mentioning this for a couple of
reasons. Historically, there haven't been a lot of nominations from the
membership for club officer positions. I don't pretend to know why this
is, but want to highlight this fact to encourage folks to think about it
BEFORE they come to the meeting.
There's something else that I'd like for you to think about. We're in
the middle of a changing of the guard. Nobody announced this and I only
realized it recently, but that is what's happening. Think about all of
the key people that have left in the past couple of
years: Wade Harrison, Rob Cone, Pat Clarke, Terri and Garrett Wonders,
Kristen Steele. These are not the kind of people that are easy to
replace! Despite the amazing and sustained efforts of people like
Charles Fox and John and Jana Glover, there remains something of a
leadership vacuum in the cycling community. My experiences this past
year have taught me that it takes more than a few aspiring leaders to
keep the club running well. The departure of two of our officers
mid-year (Kerry Wright and Kristen Steele) was very noticeable. In
addition, we have two of our most popular rides that are now leaderless.
We are working toward developing a new crop of leaders in the club, but
we need more people. This is where the membership comes in! We need
people to step up and accept leadership roles in the club. We need more
of our members to volunteer to lead rides. A couple of our "all classes"
rides have gotten so fast that only the most aggressive riders can keep
up. We need leaders for more social and novice rides. We need more
contributors to the club's newsletter. It is ludicrous to expect that
anyone could (or should) publish our newsletter single- handedly.
I'd like for everyone who reads this message to consider how they might
contribute to the club. It doesn't take much. Volunteer to support a
century ride, come to a club meeting and show us your vacation slides,
teach somebody on the roadside how to change a flat tire, write an email
to the group about an important development in local bicycle advocacy,
or write a story about riding in Italy for the newsletter. I suspect
that many of you do a regular ride and do it either alone or with just
one or two people. All you have to do is post the ride on our ride
calendar to make it available to other cyclists. There are LOTS of ways
to support the club without making a lifetime commitment. If you have
more time and energy to contribute, we would love to have some help on
the board. We have in increasing number of newly developed leaders who
will be thrilled to work with you.
Give this message some thought and then come to next week's meeting to
talk about it.

Thank you for your email.
I will be out of the office from Tuesday, November 21st through Friday,
November 24th. I will return on Monday, November 28th and will respond
to all emails at that time.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Amy
Collin Papke and myself are planing on some trail maintenance on
Friday morning around 9:00, if the weather permits, with a possible
ride later. Collin has access to some hand tools but no other
equipment. We expect to have a lot of debris to clear off the trail
after the recent high winds. If time allows, maybe targeting a couple
of the rougher areas that might be improved with root
removal/reduction. Nothing formal is planned but we thought we would
post, just in case anybody else needed to work off a little pumpkin
pie.

How many would like to participate in some local fun by doing some Poker runs. This would be done by locating stations along the red and blue trails with punches. You ride out and punch your card, return and draw cards, best hand wins. The prize could be a cash pot, say everyone that participates throws 2 bucks or so in the pot.
A good promotion tool that would maybe help get us all organized.

Don,
Please count me in on the IMBA membership. I am kind of new to
mountain biking, but I am interested in getting more active and
attending more rides.
Thanks for taking the initiative to set this up.

Thanks Lynn, you don't have to be "good enough", you just get out there and do it, it is all about the fun of it. We need more women to get involved. Come out and ride with me sometime.
I have abandoned Coastal Cyclist, butI believe if you send a blank email to this link CoastalCyclists-subscribe@yahoogroups.com it will put you back on their group, if not there is a place on their website that will.
Sorry but Don Taylor does not ring any bells in my mind, who is he?

Hi Don,
Congratulations on such a fine race. I really wish I was good enough to participate. Next time hopefully I won't have family obligations and can volunteer. Would be havin fun just on the sidelines. It's so neat to know you guys are out there hammering it out.
I got an e-mail from David Quick last week. He's going to try to give all of the tri sports (yes, and off road :-) ) more exposure.
I want my super star friends who rode last weekend to be recognized. I have somehow deleted anything Coastal Cyclists' from my computer, or rather Yahoo may have done it. Do you have a link that could put me back in the loop?

Don and fellow Fat Tire Freaks,
First, we owe Don a huge debt of gratitude for all of the tireless
work that he has put into the trail at Marrington. Without his
efforts, mountain biking in the Lowcountry would be relegated to a few
less than desireable trails, i.e. the W.A.Greenway, Wambaugh Cycle
Trails and the eastern section of the Palmetto Trail.
Thank-you Don!!!!
Don, I am 100% behind the decision to join IMBA. Hopefully, this
affiliation will work to our advantage to further enhance the quality
of our riding experience.
I propose that all of the current members of our Yahoo group indicate
whether they are interested in supporting this decision by sending out
a post to the group. Let Don know how you feel.
Thanks!!!!!!

I am happy to pay the dues so lets not worry about that. Lets see how things go and when it comes time to renew we can discuss the payment at that time.

Hey Y'all,
I posted pictures from the race in the photo section, so check them out. Most came out okay. Sorry I didn't get a shot of everyone, but it was a pretty fast start.
