So far only 35 out of over a 100 people have completed the survey I posted.
Thanks to you if you have already done it. Please take a minute to do this if
you have not. I will complete it Friday night, and report on the results in the

Don, Thanks for the info.   I'll go through the links and see what else I can get for info and contacts.  There is a lot more use out there then I thought.  I guess I'm always at off times when I go, since I rarely seen anyone else at all while on a ride.   Let me know next time you are doing some maintenance and want a hand.  I'll come out to help, and bring beer :D

I thought I was email just you Don, but guess i got the full group instead.  So to the rest of the group, Hello.  I'm a new transplant to the area.  I moved here a couple months ago from Maine, with a little time in and out of Atlanta last year.  Looking for places to ride around here, a neighbor showed Marrington to me this summer (it's a bit hotter and more humid here!) for a few early morning rides.  Seems to be more road riders then mtn. bikers.  Glad to know there is a group the likes the dirt.
I've done projects with land conservancy and trail work in a few different states as I've bounced around.  I enjoy doing the work, and like to ride the trails when I'm done... so it's not all about the others :)  I usually stayed out of the legal side of it.  Maine laws make it a lot easier... public access is basically assumed in most places, unless posted otherwise.

I'd be interested in knowing more about the KOA on 17 if anyone has info.  Are there maps of the place?  What were the costs and/or access issues?  I find it's good to know what sort of problems killed a set of trails in the past.  make sure it doesn't happen again.  Maybe even work on reviving the place if I can...

couple general questions for the group:
What shops are recommended for mtn bike parts/support?   I like to pick up parts locally if I can.

Anyone up for a ride?

Chris

My opinion is the more trials the better, we need more diversity. As for how much use it will get is anyone's guess, it will all hinge on access and construction. There was an attempt several years ago for trail at the KOA on 17 outside Mount Pleasant, I helped with some of the construction and it saw some use but finally died I believe, someone correct me if I am wrong. I believe access issues were a problem along with trying to charge a fee.
You ask about liability. Of course we operate as a public land use facility and Liability is assumed by the user. Private land is another issue, you would need a system of having everyone that uses the trails to sign a wavier of some sort and that still does not insure that you would be safe for litigation in the event of a serious injury. Check out the International Mountain Biking Association website http://www.imba.com/resources/trail_issues/land_liability.html

There are also other resources there that might answer questions you have.

Rider usage has been studied here in the past using trip counters. Figures from 2007 and 2008 showed we averaged over 500 hits per month, highest being around 800 a month to lowest being 300, so we get a lot of use. I estimate that there are around 50 dedicated riders that ride here and put in a lot of miles. I can count on about 20 people to help with maintenance.

You might try contacting the Palmetto Cycling Coalition  http://www.pccsc.net/
They deal primarily with road riders, but might have some advice.
Coastal Cyclist http://www.coastalcyclists.org/ They are the local road bike group and I believe they have some lawyers in their fold.

Ask what the people on this group think, a lot of them live in MT P and would probably welcome a place to ride close to home. A challenging course would do well here with stunts and technical challenges. That is where the liability issue come into play.

I suggest you sit down and come up with a proposal, get some mapping and lay out an idea, talk to the legal people an d go from there.
I will tell you from my past 11 years of building and maintaining trail, it is a full time job that your only reward will be the satisfaction that you get from making other people happy and giving them a resource that is in short supply. Occasionally some one leaves you a six pack of good beer.

Hope this helps

Subject: [Low_Country_Fat_Tire_Freaks] Marrington Trails

Hi there. My name is Chris Tullmann. I met you out at the parking lot the other day. I found the site and the group. Looks like the yahoo groups is more active then the forum site (registered for that also). Thanks for the info.

I have a few questions that came up today that I thought you might be able to help me with. I have found a property owner that may let me build some trails on his property. Property is in Mt. Pleasant. Looks like about 100 acres available. Just wondering what the interest would be in more trails in the area.
Do you know how many people use Marrington Plantation trails? Number of people that get annual passes maybe? Or number of people that you see that come out for volunteer days (usually figure 4 times as many use the trails)?
Any idea how the liability works for the trails? Property owner wants to get an idea of what his liability will be if he lets me build trails. Guessing it might be different with the government owned property.

Let me know if you have anyone else in mind that I may be able to pick their brain. Or feel free to pass on my info to them.

Thank you.
Hope to see you out on the trails sometime soon.

Thank you to all that takes the time to vote. Please forward to any friends or family

Greg

The Astana cycling team is donating some signed memorabilia to a few select charities.  Pattison's Academy in Charleston has been selected as one of the 15 charities.  It's so great that a local Charleston charity was selected out of all the charities that submitted. Now if Pattison's receives the highest number of votes they will get first pick of the signed items.  Then Pattison's will auction off the item.  So please take a minute and vote.  It really only takes a second.  There is only two buttons to push!  That's all!

Here is the link.  Scroll to the bottom of the page to vote.  If you are not familiar with Pattison's Academy there is a brief description on this same site.

Thanks!!!

In reference to the Blue Trail...I have just finished blowing off the
debris on this trail. It really could use some traffic, as some of you old
timers will recall, this used to be the original trail...this is where it
all started. It is a little rough with roots but is really a nice ride.

There is also a new challenge on Phase 3 of the Foster Creek Loop.

Due to the recent extreme tides, Foster Creek is backing water in to some
places it normally does not, so be aware. One of the problem areas is the
bridge crossing prior to the Clay Pits, Yesterday it was completely
submerged. I would like to suggest that you use the Old Blue Blaze Trail
prior to the bridge and make your way around to the other side using that
route if the water has the trail covered in that area.

Collin came by and aptly named our wet section of trail "The Nile" since the
Amazon is already taken. Pictures are posted in the photos sectin

When we started out Saturday morning there was an abnormally high tide that left
the complete section of trail under water so we started rock armoring the higher
end and worked toward the bridge as the tide gradually went out. We put down
all the concrete that we had moved to the low area beforehand and even brought
down another load from the parking area. We got concrete down on about 75% of
the low section, filled in about half of that with gravel and still got back to
the parking lot before noon. Thanks to Judy and Steve Ulmer for donating
concrete as well as Steve Michalski and Baucoms Grading for donating gravel

Thanks to the trail crew for coming out and lugging concrete and rock through
the mud and water: Werner Wilhelm, Thomas Haines, Jon Haines, David Lonergan,

Great event guys!  I had a blast!  Congratulations to Justin Fisher(man, he is fast!)  The course was actually more challenging than one would imagine since it is high energy...The pre-clinic really did shine a light on suggested cyclocross techniques, which I found myself using after a few laps in order to best conserve my energy...

I totally recommend this to the Fat Tire Freaksas a alternate short track event in the lowcountry ...mtn bikes really can race the cross stuff...
More support for events like this can help flourish some alternate off-road racing action here in the Low Country.
So come on out and check out what it is all about...

Thanks to CBC for organizing the event and all the free giveaway goodies!

HUGE thanks to North Charleston Wannamaker County Park for allowing this event to traverse throughout the land!

Cheers,
Joel

Check out a video from yesterdays cyclocross event.  You can see the video on www.charlestonbicyclecompany.com or on the CBC Facebook page.

We had 30 people participate.  Greg Martin did a great job with the skills clinic.  Folks learned how to dismount, shoulder your bike, remount, jump barriers, etc.  Everyone had a chance to practice their new skills on the course before the race.  Local mountain biker Justin Fisher won the race.  After the race there was a lot of talk about equipment choices and riding techniques.  Come check it out this weekend at Wannamaker county park.  The details are in the below email.

WE WILL BE CHANGING THE COURSE FOR THIS WEEKEND!

I could use a few volunteers.  Please let me know if you can help out on Saturday afternoon setting up or Sunday morning.

Hello Cyclists,

< d iv>Charleston Bicycle Co. is very excited to announce the introduction of cyclo-cross to Charleston!  North Charleston Wannamaker County Park has agreed to let us host several cyclo-cross events.  We will have an hour long cyclo-cross training session.  Greg Martin from Independent Fabrications will be there to teach the basics of cyclo-cross.  He will review starts, dismounts, re-mounts, run ups, barrier crossing, shouldering a bike, equipment and race strategy.  There will be a practice race after the training session.  This is not a sanctioned event.  The idea is to introduce the sport of cyclo-cross and gauge the interest in the community.  Based on the interest level we can build this into a race series next year.  Everyone is welcome and the only cost is the $1 per person admission to the park. Please let me know if you are coming or if you think you may be coming.   P lease spread the word.

Details can be found at www.charlestonbicyclecompany.com on the News & Events scroll.

Hey Guys/Gals

Just want to get the word out that this years recruitment for the Tour De Cure has begun. Since I saw that I was one of the first to sign up I took it upon myself to create a team to represent the Fat Tire Freaks. So if you plan on signing up please join the team so we can represent ourselves out there.

Joel since you are more technologically advanced than I if you would so feel as to take over as captain I will relinquish to you so you can update the site with the links to our website and other cool stuff.

There are a few small wet spots but overall is in good condition as of my ride this afternoon, I did  not ride Foster Creek, but can't imagine that is any different.

When we passed this morning there was a sign on the trailhead on Hwy 17 that said trail closed.  You may want to check prior to going.

REMINDER – TRAIL WORK DAY TOMORROW morning starting at 8:00. Come whenever you
can. Wear clothes and shoes that can get muddy and a pair of work gloves.
Please let me know if you expect to come so I can bring enough coffee and
doughnuts.

to the wet area in advance so it's just a matter of laying out the concrete and
spreading gravel in the cracks.

No. I would never do such a thing I was just suggesting that you are a bit better with computers than I am. I can work it if you want, but if not I know you did it last year. I just don't want to step on anyone's toes. haha.

Agree with you that usually you get what you pay for, however check out the Magicshine before you cast judgement.  It is based off of the German Lupine design and uses Cree LED's.  I currently run a Dinotte 200 on helmet and a Nightlightning on bars.  Together they put out about 900 Lumens.  Looking to replace the Dinotte with the Magicshine.  Also, looking at upgrading the Nightlining to the new Cree LED's that would put out about 2700 Lumens by itself.  Just trying to turn the night into day.

Anyway, let me know if you would like to gamble on the Magicshine.

Not knowing your riding style it might be an ok commuter light. Don't know about screaming though the woods in total darkness though. An $85 light is $85 for a reason just like a $300 light is $300 for a reason. I've been night riding and racing for a long time and have bought alot of different gear, and in cycling related products you really do get what you pay for. Save your money and buy a higher quality light the first time instead of in a couple of weeks when that one is broken. Talk to Mike Treman at Charleston Bicycle Company (571-1211) he's pretty knowledgable about the latest tech and can usually hunt down a good price.

But that's just my opinion I'm sure Yoda will post a diatribe to rebuff my remarks.

Considering ordering one of these from Geoman.  Anyone else interested.  It has gotten rave reviews on MTBR.com.  Really can't go wrong for $85.  Would be sufficient to get into night riding.  Take a look and let me know.  I will probably place the order tomorrow.
