No worries, David. I can't imagine anyone being offended by you not
knowing Sifu Galvin's location. :)

I know of a number of people teaching related arts in parts of Florida
well away from the panhandle. Unfortunately, these aren't really
options for my student who is moving down there. He's not nearly far
enough along in his training that he'd be willing to travel 400+ miles.
He trained with me for a few months, was deployed to Afghanistan, and
came back for a few weeks before leaving the area.

Sorry if some of my information is flawed, I mostly retrieve information from
other sources online; out here in the midwest, not too many sources I can go to
directly. Last I had heard in terms of written information, Sifu Galvin had
moved to Florida in the 70's, and nothing more was written on if he had returned
to New York. I mean no offense to anyone and deeply apologize if I have caused
any confusion or ill will on anything I've said.
Don't know if they are still there, but I've read that Carl Spitale's student,
Sifu Lenny Howie, has a cousin, Tony Laughlin, who teaches out of his home in
Tampa, Florida...kinda far from the panhandle, but closer than anything else
I've been able to find. Another of Sifu Howie's students, Chris Derbaum,
teaches in Fort Myers, FL. I unfortunately don't have any contact information
on them, but hopefully, someone else here does. However, I do not know if they
teach Liu Seong Royal Kung Fu, or just a variation.
If I'm stepping on any toes or traditions not presently known to me, just send a
message, and I will cease. Members of our school did not know of our relation
to Liu Seong Royal Kung Fu until recently, as we follow a deep tradition of not
being allowed to ask questions, unless our Sifu feels we deserve to know.

Thanks for the info, Mr. Reeders; I'll adjust my notes. Definitely don't want to go to a place with that type of attitude present.

Was Sifu Galvin ever in Florida? I've always known him to be in the

Mr. Kane,
sitting here thinking about it brings back some memories. grueling ones.
John-john relished our little agonies....lol. he never hurt us, but we sure did
get a work out. I used to slip and fall in my own sweat, and had to resort to
keeping a towel with me when i trained. I owe a great deal of flexibility to
those sessions, which i still retain to a great extent to this day, despite a
lack of regular stretching regimen.
my favorite(?) was when we would come to class expecting a half an hour or
fourty five minute warmup, and it would go on until the it was time to go home.
i would walk home feeling like a wet noodle.
Peace.
Mike.

For some reason, your messages are coming through as blank unless I
specifically tell my email client (Thunderbird) to display them as plain

One thing my Teacher did extremely well, among others, was control the setup
when it came to doing techniques. He had this little offset from center that
pretty much killed any hope you had of hitting him. from there it didnt matter
how he chose to stop you, because you had already fallen into his trap. flying
in wouldn't help, it would just get you hurt. His timing, distance, and angle
was all 'one' thing and resulted in a most excellent control of the ground that
you both shared.
my Teacher didn't 'defend', he pulled you into a pattern of his choosing. He
created the 'options' you had to counter or defend, and just as abruptly took
them away. that's if he was in a good mood...:)
otherwise he preferred to shut everything down right away. it didnt really
matter what you tried to hit him with, it just wasn't going to happen.
many would say that because i am talking about my teacher, likely my experience
or view is tainted, or not objective. it's true in many cases that students are
in awe of their teachers and as a result, perform attacks and responses in a
lackluster way with their instructors. 'compliant' i think they like to call
it.
while i agree in general with assertion, it is true in many cases, i am not
exactly the 'compliant' type, and only a semi-prodigal son. I
like to test the waters. I've done a bit of that with my Teacher and all my
Seniors. That is why i have the respect for them that i do.
now, i never took a for realz shot at my father, cause i knew he'd smoke me
faster than a blunt at a 50cent concert.
like they say, i might be dumb, but i aint stupid.
point is, the job was done before it started. that was his fundamental
deception.
and you could say, well he had good distance control, but every style has
distance control, and they often vary considerably in their definition and use
of that.
TBC (it's late)
Peace.
Mike.

a very simplified example would be seen in sparring where a very aggressive
fighter dictates the flow of movements, in various ways, against a defensive or
passive fighter.

a variety of ways, and doesnt have to be or appear to be overly dominant or
aggressive. through manipulations of distance, posture, positioning, and
leverage you can control 'time and space' so as to impose a pattern (technique)
upon another. 'Psychology' is, of course, a major component of this, but it
goes without saying as the entire topic is 'Psychology'.

that 'Martial Arts is for self defense'. This statement is true in a particular
context. Generally, if someone makes a committed attack to you, they will by
nature, expose themselves to a counter attack. Somewhere a gate will open and
can be easily struck, provided you know the movement(s) needed to do so.
Introverted processing, or 'waiting for him to complete or attempt his pattern'
seems quite viable for self defense. He will try something, you will 'read' it,
and then nullify it one way or another.

Another reason I love the instruction from
ACIFA, as I was suffering thru a class of iaido and
Kenjitsu this past weekend up in Canada, the Sensei was yelling at me,
"longer stance Clint" & "Deeper stance Clint"
. Oy, my aching back.
I couldn't move on Sunday, I've been working half days this week due to
terrible back pain.
Now at ACIFA, Sifu George would direct the floor drills and then qualify
it with, "But not you Clint".
Mr Joe too, he looked out for me. If I was trying to keep up
with the rest of the class, I'dfeel his gaze.........
then he'd say, Clint what are you doing?
George & Joe are looking out for me, those are the guys who
really "got my back".
George,
Sorry to hear that your school is closing. It's been instrumental in many ways
to the growth of the Liu Seong family. Though there are many schools of the
system throughout the country, yours was the highest profile, and was the scene
of many great seminars and meetings of all kinds.
There are many among us who can sit and reflect upon the experiences that we had
training in your hall.
At first, my thoughts where that we are indeed losing 'something' here. It's
odd to think that if i follow my old route from buffalo to rochester, i wont
find your school waiting there for me. So i can understand Erik's impulse to
rush 'home'. It's not rash. It's the end of an era.
And that's what makes the school, any school, what it is. The people and their
energy coming together, and making something bigger than sum of it's parts.
I always found your school to be open and inviting, and your students always
carried themselves with decorum. Exemplary, to be sure.
It might be the end of your school, but they do say an End is just a Beginning.
See you at Tom's.
Peace.
Mike.

I lucked out in finding ACIFA while looking for a place for my son to train. . . and I stayed. The experience was invaluable. You have given so much to all of us over the years and I sympathize with the need to move on and take care of family.
I’ll try to swing by for a last visit but If I don’t see you, thanks for all you’ve given us and good luck with everything.
All my best,
Glenn West

Due to finances and life's current situations at home, I am closing the Academy of Chinese-Indonesian Fighting Arts at 80 Rockwood Place in Rochester, NY.
I will be teaching on Saturdays at Tom's school in Fairport, NY off and on during the summer then regularly in September.
Note to my student, you should continue your training at Tom's School. He has trained with me for many years and I have the utmost confedence in him and his skill as a martial artist and teacher. You will be in good hands. Also I will be keeping an eye on him and his school.
Also Joe will be continue his Wednesday Advanced class when he gets back in town next week.
I want to give a warm and heart felt THANK YOU to all of you that have supported ACIFA and also whose of you that have come to visit it us over the years. It has been a wonderful 25 years but on Tuesday, March 31st the last class will be held at the school.
I will continue to be training and involved in this art I love so much that Master Reeders gave us.
It is not the end but just a new direction for me. I am going to focus on some more personal training, quiet sitting, and family stuff that needs my attention.

It may seem a bit silly and rash, but I wanted a bit of
"closure" by
visiting the school once more before it closed, so I redeemed a bunch
of
frequent flyer miles and I'm making a quick trip home this weekend
to
attend Saturday's class (coming to the "closing night" on
Tuesday just
wouldn't be possible right now). I look forward to seeing everyone
who's still training there.
Exactly, this is what its all about. Talk about
loyalty, Erik hears the school is closing and comes running home from DC.
Same as if ones parents were selling the house you grew up in and you
wanted to see, feel, smell the environment one more time. For many of us,
it is a home away from home, a sanctuary of sorts. I have
pressed through some difficult times in my life with George and the
ACIFA, training for 22-23 years now. Someone once posted a thread
about martial arts and community. I never replied at the time, let me say
now that we are a tight community. Many of you have lifted my
spirits just by your warm smiles and hard dedicated work. Thank you Sifu
George.
I've told this story before, I decided to
save money and install a new roof on my house one year. After a two
layer tear off and finding rotten wood I was exhausted, low and my back
was breaking. I was sitting up on the roof, all alone and overwhelmed by
the job I had overtaken. I was hurting......... a car pulls
up. Sifu Jim Johnson jumps out, wearing a tool pouch, shouts up
"what cha doing?" He worked his butt off all day,
then took me and the wife out to dinner, went to a ball game with the
kids and bought everyone ice cream. I'm choking up thinking about
ol Sifu Jim, "The ROCK" we called him.
Martial arts community...............my dear old Mother needed help
moving some heavy items from her home prior to moving into assisted
living. Sifu Jay says I'm your man! Along with Dave we lifted a piano and
some large furniture out of the house and into the truck.
When Sifu Will was working on his house, I heard Sifu Tom and others came
over to help him out. Community...........All the King &
I parties we've had.
I am proud to be part of this Liu Seong extended family. And it
will continue and thrive over at Sifu Toms school.
See you all next Tuesday, I think a King & I party
would be perfect after class next week.
Notice I haven't said a word about Sifu George, I'm NOT going
there. Ain't going to wear all that emotion on my sleeve on a
public forum. Nope, gonna cry in my beer all alone.

I've got almost 20 years of very fond memories from the school. For
years, it was my home away from home, and its members were my second
family. I've missed this great training environment since I left
Rochester, and it saddens me to see the school close.
Though it obviously won't be the same I know that the character of
George's school will live on in Tom's school, and George's students will
do well to train there.

Thank YOU, Shifu George. Your instruction, guidance, support, and
friendship have always meant (and continue to mean) a great deal to me.
You've poured years of your life into sharing what you enjoy with so
many of us. Through your school, you've made a positive impact on so
many lives. Even when I've had occasion to encounter former students
who didn't train there for more than a few months, they always had fond
memories and took life-long lessons from their time there.

Mas George,
Sorry to hear about the closing of your school.. 25 yrs is a long time to spend
dedicated to a school just to watch it close due to the situations that have
been ongoing in the states now..
As one of Sifu Spitale's students, I have watched the information and postings
of this board for some time and was glad to be one of the participants.
When I opened up the email and read this posting, I had come out of the shadows
and post my feelings and regrets on this subject.
I wish you luck in your future endeavors and maybe some day we can get together
and share some of our different systems with each other..
With Respect

I’m definitely sad to hear of your closing. I have enjoyed the
fellowship of you and your students, and indeed, I have enjoyed the great
quality of your kungfu family over the years.Of course we know from our art, that yielding is overcoming
and ending is beginning. So I have total confidence that fruitful new
beginnings will emerge from your choice and from the quality of the individuals
that have been drawn to you.My
best wishes in your new directions, and gratitude of course for the good you
have created along the way.
All the best,
Michael Kane
