Roberto -
I checked on some steel prices. In ABQ I can pick up sheets of 3/8" AR400 for $710 per sheet plus tax. 2 sheets out the door about $1520 if I pick them up on my trailer next time I go to ABQ. AR500 price would be similar. My local source can't beat that with a stick. Getting it cut into poppers, steel challenge plates, etc I could probably get done here for a jug of fine spirits.
I would venture to say that I can probably weasel a couple sheets of mild steel out of my homies and get them cut for a little sweat equity they already owe me for, but it is mild steel and not acceptable for rifle matches. I have some 3/8" mild steel plates that stand up ok to pistol shots, but I would give them a lifespan of about 3-4 years at monthly steel matches with guys banging on them with open guns.
Weigh the two options: AR plate = very expensive but lasts forever with pistol rounds (fair lifespan with .223 rifle rounds)
Mild steel = easy to come by for less than half the price, but limited lifespan and NO RIFLE ROUNDS.
If it's just for steel challenge matches, I would vote for the Mild steel. I can get the plates cut probably by the end of the month.
I could buy the steel for the mounts and you could have some rebar stands made up like the Honky Action guys use. We'd get by for quite a while with minimal cost and easy setup on match days.
Put together a quick list of the sizes and number of plates you think we would need and I'll lay them out in AutoCAD and see how many full sheets I will need to get cut. How many 10" circles, how many 12" circles, how many rectangle plates (and dimensions of those).
Could possibly be shooting steel by February, but maybe March is more realistic.

Subject: [LasCrucesUSPSA] Match dates
Shooters,
We will continue to have our monthly USPSA matches on the 1st. sat.
thru 2008.
In addition, on the 4th saturday, we will begin hosting a combat type
match. 4 stages or more, pistol, rifle and some shotgun..
IDPA scoring, points down + time. but with USPSA targets.
Divisions will be IDPA with the addition of Limited and Open. Limited
will be the same as USPSA rules and the same for Open.
Rifles and shotguns can be comped, with optical sites. This way any
gun can play and not worry about the age old IDPA vs. IPSC argument.
If you've ever shot the Alamogordo 2 gun match on the 3rd saturdays,
it will be similar, though probably simpler stage designs. If you'd
like to volunteer to set up stages and help us out. It would be
appreciated. It is hard for Justin, Clyde and myself to set up one
match per month let alone two. Any help would be welcomed and you
would be free to set up a stage you'd like to see.
10$ per shoot.
Also, If anyone has a sheet of 3/8 to 1/2" AR400-500 or hardened steel
plate. Let me know. I plan to use this date to run steel matches, 5
stages or so of the steel challenge. I just need the plate, I've got
a pipeline for someone to weld up some re-rod for the stands. Let me
know cost and where its at.
Don't forget...we'll need RO's for the October New Mexico sectionals
here in LC. Volunteers as well. If you help the match, you get your
application fee waived. I need 16 RO's total. PGC can help out with
some volunteers, but we'll need RO's for the match.
