Don't forget the love of your life on Valentines day:
Untitled Poem by "Shawdowcat" from Colorado (as found on the Internet)
The corporate office is so stuffy I would not change in there. I've got to find a discreet spot To bare my derriere. The truck cab is so very small I hate these daily fights, But since the bike is calling me I squirm into my tights. The special socks, my jersey too, the sun block's been applied, Gloves and glasses and a helmet— When will I get to ride? The tire pressure is okay, the brakes are working fine, I finally start to ride my bike When my thighs begin to whine. I rode too much the day before, I needed some more rest. To hell with that! I cry out loud, I have to pass the test. There is no test you silly fool, You made it up yourself. You ride like mad with grand delusions That you are top shelf. You are not Lance, you are not Hammer You have to take a chill. No way I tell that inner voice, Look at that lovely hill! All the gear and all the checking Just to crank out miles. The soreness and the tired legs Turn into great big smiles.

·Steve suggested using the art work that's been created for some other kind of clothing (such as dry wicking shirts, or hats, etc) since it's taking us so long to finalize something with bike jerseys.
·The idea was well received, and doing a jerseys in the future is still on the table, but we may need a volunteer outside of the board members to take ownership of that project.
If you really want a Lakeside Bike Jersey (someday) then here is your chance to make that happen.
Insurance:
Badger determined the cost would be $93 for the insurance plus $45 (per year) to join the League of American Bicyclists.
If we have any fund raising or "pay rides" we would have to pay another $93
Just like most insurance policies it has interesting rules about what is covered and what isn't.We need to have further discussion regarding that to determine if it's worth getting.
Sherry is going to research registering Lakeside Cyclist as a Non Profit organization to see what that would do to eliminate our liabilities as apposed to paying for the insurance which may not cover everything as well as we'd prefer.

Time Trials for 2007:no change….
Starts on May 1st.
Races will be Every Other Tuesday, 6pm.
We will have a total of 12 trials, but….
Points will be counted on each person's first 10 races.
That gives everyone a chance to miss two races without getting hurt on the overall points chase.
Note: We will have the club meeting after the races on two of those nights.
Note: Racing on Tuesday nights to give us a day to recover after long weekend rides or races, and we're doing them every other week to see if that makes it easier for folks to make it to more races.
We're still looking for ideas on how to streamline the race next season.
Last years method of splitting the group and having two people time everyone else, then letting them do their laps might take too much time with the two lap format. If you have thoughts on how to improve on that method please let us know.
Current suggestions and thoughts are:
Recruit our non-riding friends or family to be timers.
Switch timers as soon as the first person finishes and can take over, rather than waiting for the entire first group to finish before changing timers.
Get a sponsor to donate a multi thousand dollar chip timing system!!
Upcoming events:
April 14th (Saturday) Lunatic Fringe Off Road Duathlon at SmithvilleLake.
This is part of the Fat Tire Duathlon series. Find more information at:
We have several people interested in doing this but we're looking for more participants to fill out the race. The current list who've expressed interest are:Steve, Richard, Keith, Mike, Berna Sue, (and you????)
We'll also be looking for a designated driver with a designated support vehicle. It's been suggested to have blaze orange for our official team color.
OPEN Discussion
Cheap Trek bikes are flying out the door of one not so local bike shop as Steve snatches up discounted overstock.
In honor of Valentines day, and as a display of true love, Steve is giving his loving and understanding wife (DD) a new bike too.Okay, it's not new, it's his old used bike, but then again, I'm not sure he's ever owned a bike long enough for it to qualify for old or used.
Yes, I'm just picking on him because I'm jealous. Well there's that plus he didn't give me his old Triathlon bike. I had to buy it. What's up with that?
FIMQ (Foot In Mouth Quote) of the meeting:
Steve again:Apparently Steve didn't wear pants when he did the Triathlon in Texas.
It makes Richard and I even happier that he was BEHIND us in that race!

Sorry if this gets posted twice, I forgot to include a subject line the first time and the post hasn't shown up yet so I submitted it again.
Excellent job. I knew you were the best candidate for the office.

Brent,
First of all, I want to heartily thank you for your action on my behalf,
and the behalf of other cyclists who may happen to be unfortunate enough
to ride through Platte Woods. However, I feel I must respond to
Assistant Chief Benne's comments and his (flawed) recollection of
events.
Assistant Chief Benne of Platte Woods is in obvious error in his
description of events. This corresponds with his "errors" that there is
no bicycling on any streets in Platte Woods, Parkville, and Weatherby
Lake. The Weatherby Lake Police sergeant I spoke to even laughed and
asked "who the hell told you that?" The officer in Parkville told me
there is no such anti-cycling ordinance in that city. Assistant Chief
Benne is obviously only harassing a cyclist for his own amusement and
also seems to have a very active imagination.
In direct response to his comments:
1) There were not "20 cars" backed up behind me. He pulled me off the
road less than 3 blocks of my entering Platte Woods on Roan Ridge Road,
and there were only a few cars - a maximum of 4 - behind me that were
making their way past me one-by-one with little trouble. I was riding
as far to the right of the pavement as I could get with my tires on the
edge stripe. Therefore, I was taking far less room than the law allows
me to take and the cyclist guide recommends. I should have been farther
to the left and in the traffic lane, if anything.
2) There is NO SHOULDER AT ALL on Roan Ridge Road. Assistant Chief
Benne also told me that there is no walking allowed on any Platte Woods
roadways. However, I have eyewitness reports of not only walking on
this very pavement, but also a golf cart being driven on this and other
roads in Platte Woods very often. A member of my bicycle club cycles
this route nearly every day, including passing Platte Woods officers
without incident.
3) I was NOT waving cars by me at that time. He told me I was "making
people pass me in a no-passing zone and he could ticket all of them". I
was NOT "MAKING" any driver do anything. As an "officer of the law", he
was free to write a citation to any driver that passed in a no passing
zone, though I personally would not do so if I was in his position.
4) Roan Ridge Road is under state MoDot jurisdiction, but is not a part
of the interstate highway system. The speed limit on the 2-lane,
residential Roan Ridge Road is 35 mph, so this does not even fit the
definition of an interstate highway.
My other comments on this incident:
- There are no signs indicating that cycling - or any other activity -
is restricted or prohibited on any street in Platte Woods. If there are
such laws, they should be prominently displayed at each and every
entrance to Platte Woods.
- Do they arrest children riding their bicycles or walking in Platte
Woods?
- If there is an ordinance against bicycle riding in Platte Woods, why
has this not been communicated to the owner of the Cycle City, the
bicycle shop located just over the border of Kansas City and Platte
Woods? When I spoke to the owner of Cycle City immediately after the
incident, he knew of no such law.
- The attitude of Assistant Chief Benne was more reminiscent of a small
town southern sheriff than that of an officer within a major
metropolitan area. I expected him to say: "you in a heapa trouble now,
boy". There is no doubt in my mind that he will continue to completely
ignore the facts of law as well as the rights of cyclists, despite your
best efforts to explain the true laws regarding cycling.
- If I thought it would be worthwhile, I would file a harassment
complaint against Assistant Chief Benne, but I know that - at best it
would fall on deaf ears and more likely would only cause myself and
other cyclists additional trouble and headaches.
Once again, thank you very much, Brent. Your efforts are greatly
appreciated. This is another lesson that some police officers are NOT
looking out for the interests and rights of the average citizen, but
only in exercising their "power" for their own enjoyment. It is truly a
shame that we cannot trust officers to uphold the law.

Keith,
I finally got to speak with Asst. Chief Benne of Platte Woods a couple
of days ago. He called to follow up on the letter I sent him quite a
while back.
Here is the gist of what he said:
* He thinks bicyclists shouldn't ride on Roan Ridge
* He observed "20 cars" getting backed up behind you
* You should be riding on the shoulder instead
* He didn't like the fact that you were waving cars past in a zone
marked "no passing"
* He checked with MoDOT and some engineer told him the Roan Ridge is
part of the interstate freeway system and therefore no bicycling
allowed. (Apparently it is within the interstate right-of-way and is
formerly the travel lane of the highway--which is all completely
irrelevant to whether bicyclists are allowed there.)
I talked with him for quite a while and tried to explain a number of
things to him but I am not certain how far they penetrated. I email
Caryn Giarratano of MoDOT and asked if she would consider sending an
official MoDOT response because someone in MoDOT screwed up and handed
out the wrong information.
http://www.bikexprt.com/streetsmarts/usa/chapter2a.htm
I tried to explain that bicyclists can't ride on the gravel shoulder,
that they can't keep riding off the road onto gravel and back again,
that it would be nice to be able to pull over and let backed-up cars
past but you can't really do that unless there is some kind of a wider
paved area, that bicyclists are out riding during rush hour for the same
reason everyone else is, that bicyclists are riding on Roan Ridge
because there is no alternative route, and a few other things. I don't
know if it made a big impression.
Some relevant information:
From MoDOT's Bicycling Tips which have been vetted by MoDOT's legal
staff:
"In Missouri, bicycles and motorized bicycles may ride on any street
except travel lanes of interstate highways or where prevented by a local
law."
Missouri statutes:
http://www.moga.mo.gov/statutes/chapters/chap304.htm
304.011. 2. No vehicle shall be operated at a speed of less than forty
miles per hour on any highway which is part of the interstate system of
highways, unless:
(1) A slower speed is required for the safe operation of the vehicle
because of weather or other special conditions; or
(2) Agricultural implements, self-propelled hay-hauling equipment,
implements of husbandry and vehicles transporting such vehicles or
equipment may be operated occasionally on interstate highways for short
distances at a speed of less than forty miles per hour if such vehicle
or equipment is operated pursuant to a special permit issued by the
chief engineer of the state department of transportation pursuant to
section 304.200 and the regulations established pursuant to such
section.

In fact, the Weatherby Lake officer started laughing and asked who in

you and the group. I've heard from a current Platte Woods resident that
this is not the first time this officer made up his own laws.

Thinking a little, this reminds me of an incident several years ago in
Lake Tapawingo, a real small sort of private community out near Blue
Springs. The mayor threatened some guy that all the roads there were
private and if anyone bicycled there they would just confiscate his
bicycle. Of course nothing ever happened but the situation was never
resolved, either.

That's the opinion I get from a former Platte Woods resident, too. This
officer was from the city (or village) of Platte Woods. They have their

I will also do some checking and we can compare the answers we get. My
impression is that this was a rogue officer with the opinion that the
only good cyclist is no cyclist, but I didn't think I was in a position
to argue with him without knowing the facts. Thanks.

I'll do some checking but I think he is making stuff up.
If all those cities had no-bicycling laws I would know about it . . .
What he may be getting mixed up with, is many cities recently have
passed laws banning "pocket bikes"--but those are small motorized
vehicles.
For certain, they cannot just ban bicycles without posting it via signs.
That would be completely unenforceable.
Do you know what city/county or whatever this officer was from?
Sherriff? It may open up a good opportunity to do some education of our
police officers in the area.

Brent,
On Friday October 6th while riding my bicycle I was stopped by a police
officer on Roan Ridge Road in Platte Woods, MO. While doing his best
Sheriff Buford T. Justice impersonation, he informed me that I was in
violation of a Platte Woods ordinance that prohibited bicycling on the
streets of Platte Woods. He also told me that there were identical
anti-cycling ordinances in Parkville, Weatherby Lake, and Lake Waukomis.
None of these towns posts any signs regarding any anti-cycling
ordinances on the roads. He was also extremely rude and condescending,
but that's another matter entirely.
I inquired at Cycle City, a bicycle shop just over the borderline from
Platte Woods, as to whether they had ever heard of such ordinances. They
had not.
I personally have my doubts about the existence of these laws. The Tour
de Cure ride travels through Parkville and I have often cycled and have
seen many other cyclists (and police officers) in Parkville.
I and others in my club have ridden in Weatherby Lake and been seen by
the Weatherby Lake police without incident. A member of my cycling club
rides on Roan Ridge Road in Platte Woods nearly every day and has never
been stopped by the police.
Do you know of any such anti-cycling ordinances in the cities? If these
laws exist, do they arrest children on their bicycles? Why aren't these
laws posted on the roadways? How can we work to eliminate these laws?
Thanks you for your help.

I like the fund raising idea. I hope that for only a buck or two that non-members don't expect prizes. Even members shouldn't expect prizes, but I digress. Two bucks might be good - that would make joining the club for $20 and having a chance at our vast array of prizes a better deal than going to the majority of the TTs as a non-member.

I think that the 2 week format is a very good idea. With all of the Tri-geeks we have in the group the Tuesday option is a good idea as well. This gives the kitchen pass a break for a week and allows mountain biking for the off week in my case. I like schedule A. It's going to be as long as bowling season only it will be 2 laps of hell instead of 2 rounds of beer.
What about the thought of advertising it in the bike shops and charging a $1 or $2 for entry to non-members as a fund raiser for the club?

It's also been proposed to move the races to Tuesdays to give us another day to recuperate after long weekend rides, or weekend races.

In 2007 daylight time is longer than before. It's a couple weeks longer at each end, so we should be good with any of these schedules as far as daylight time is concerned, though we may catch some twilight at the start or finish weeks with the earliest and latest schedules. My preference is the A schedule to get the season started earlier and end before the gales of October and the hurricane west wind blow us off the road. At least the gales of April tend to be from the south and feels better after the winter. As an alternative, there is no magic about a 12-TT season. We could shorten it to 10. Twelve TTs allows for some catch-up for those who miss several weeks, which could be good. With that in mind, should we look at reinstating the old limitation of 10 TTs per rider? In 2006 we had no limit so we could encourage more participation. That worked well for me!!! Just some things to think about for discussion next meeting.

Membership:It's time to burn off the donuts!Renew your memberships soon!
Renewal forms are On-Line.Feel free to print extras for your co-workers, friends, and family.
Fill them out and turn them in at a future ride or club event.
·Members who renewed at the Monthly Meeting
Our Prez who keeps the show running: Keith aka Badger
Our Treasurer who keeps the treasure chest: Sherry aka DD,
The Secrerary who keeps forgetting to take notes: Mike aka Griz
And the ones who keep drinking beers: (in order of appearance)
Greg aka Moonshine
Richard aka Timex
Steve aka Lamar
·New Members
Berna Sue aka no nick names that I'm allowed to share
Membership cards:Pending Design, Approval, and what else? Oh yeah, Production.
Treasury report:The Treasurer did not have the current balance with her but she stated that"No funds have been stolen or lost" thus dispelling rumors from last month's meeting about how Lamar has been financing all his new bikes.
Flyers:Greg needs more copies to place in the bike shops he frequents. We keep nailing Ben (Dover) with the printing task. If anyone else has access to a quality color two sided printing device, please let us know so we don't wear Ben out.
Bike Schedule and Scheduling Winter Rides: We discussed what to do about our normally scheduled Saturday morning rides since we never know if it's going to be 50 or 15 at 8am and there is some discrepancy on the definition of "acceptable riding weather."
It was determined that we should utilize this Web Sites Message/Posting to coordinate times and locations. So keep your eye on the weather forecasts and post messages about what time you think will provide the best ride conditions.
Club Insurance: No updates
Club Logo: We have not received any new Logo designs for two months, so we decided to go with one of the designs from Ben's artist co-worker friend.
CLUB SPONSORSHIP:The meeting is currently being held at one of our potential sponsor's locations. They did not forget any food orders for the first time in three meetings! However the service staff was still slower than Griz during hibernation. We're a happy fun loving group, we'll wait for new and slower riders, we'll wait for riders doing roadside repairs, just don't make us wait for drink or food!
We are still open for more sponsorship suggestions to add to our current list.
·Richard is going to ask Joe (from CycleCity) about sponsoring our club.
·Others were mentioned but I did not get it documented on who was checking with whom.
·If you think someone might be interested, then get off your tail and ask them!
CLUB Jerseys:
·We still need to find out how much it will cost for various size logo's on various locations on the jerseys before next months meeting! We need this information to help potential sponsors determine what they want to do.
·Our goal is for each sponsor to at least double the amount it will cost to have their logo added to the jerseys.
·Badger to follow up with Ben about the Jerseys.
·Travis mentioned being able to get samples to check out sizes if we give vendors a deposit.
Constitution & Bylaws:Keith brought examples from various other clubs to the meeting. He will whip out something about the bylaws and will send it out for review before next meeting. We may or may not have assigned a sub committee for reviewing them.
Time Trials for next year:Planning to hold them at the DowntownAirport again in 2007.It will be a two lap format this year.(roughly 7 miles)
We're looking for ideas on how to streamline the race next season. Splitting the group and having two separate races where a couple people volunteer to time and wait till the first group finishes before they get to race will extend the overall length of our races with the two lap format. If you have thoughts on how to improve on that method please let us know.
Current suggestions and thoughts are:
Switch timers as soon as the first person finishes and can take over, rather than waiting for the entire first group to finish before changing timers.
Beg some non-riding friends or family to be our timer(s).
Get a sponsor to donate a multi thousand dollar chip timing system!!
Time Trials Prizes for this year:
At the very least, we'll have some very nice Certificates of Accomplishment for them at next month meeting.
Upcoming events:
Gracemore 5K Nov 11
Jingle Bell run at Zona Rosa Nonv 19
Several members are doing the Turkey Trot 5K on Thanksgiving morning.
New Years day Tom and Jerry's Time Trial.Location and time TBD next month
OPEN Discussion
Several members had fun at the Shoal Creek Wilderness Run.In keeping with tradition, Sherry's race number was 691.
Since many of us are active with other sports, we thought it should be okay to add other Running, Swimming, Orienteering, or other similar events or training schedules to the calendar.
If I'm not mistaken, Oct 28th was Greg (Moonshines) 22nd birthday anniversary.
Sherry is following a proven training plan to prepare for Rock n Roll Marathon.
Steve is using the R&R training plan to prepare for the R-n-R marathon.
FIMQ (Foot In Mouth Quote) of the meeting:"I can go both ways"
Spoken by: Richard
What we believe Richard really meant:"I can take it any way I want"
Another opportunity to speak up for more
multi use trails. I will be out there. There is trail building going on 8:00 to
12:00 out there also. Let me know if you are interested in helping out.
Also put on your calendar, trail building
day at Smithville trails is on for December 2.

The Johnson County Park and Recreation District will
be holding a public comment forum on October 21st to solicit input
regarding future use of the Oakridge Farm area and Mack House at Shawnee
Mission Park. This area is due north of the existing mountain bike trail
system. If you have ridden or run off-road at SMP in the past two years
I’m sure you are aware of the Phase 1 changes to the existing trail
system. We plan to complete Phase 1 by the end of this year and will be looking
to get started on Phase 2 very soon afterward. The Phase 2 trail system will be
within the aforementioned Oakridge Farm area. I have mapped out Phase 2 with a
proposed 10 mile loop and I plan to present this proposal to the County for
their approval. If we can get a significant representation of trail users to
attend this public input meeting and express their interest in a singletrack
trail system I am extremely confident that the proposed trail would be
approved.
We have an incredible opportunity here to develop a
sizeable trail system in the heart of Johnson County. Even if you don’t
live in JoCo, there will be enough trail here to make the drive worthwhile.
Please participate in the public input meetings. Don’t leave it to
others. Make a day of it, come out and ride or run first then just drop by the
park office on your way out.
When/Where The
public input meeting will be held:
Saturday, October 21st at 12:15pm
JCPRD Admin Boardroom (at the Renner entrance to SMP)
7900 Renner Rd.
This is a “social” meeting. You
don’t need to stand up in front of a crowd of people to get your point
across and there is no official start time. Just swing by between 12:15 and
1pm.
The County has arranged for a hayride tour of the
Oakridge Farm area starting from the Mack House. You can join a tour anytime
between 10am and noon.
The hayrides will be held:
Saturday, October 21st from 10:00am until noon
at the Mack House
Keywords It is
very important for trail users to accurately convey to the planners the type of
trail that they are interested in using. For all they know, mountain bikers
want a 12 foot wide chat path on flat terrain, running through a field. I
personally, am interested in a trail that meets the following criteria:
Singletrack with no more than
an 18 inches of compacted tread
Built on natural terrain with a
natural surface
Flows well yet has technical
challenges
Takes advantage of the topology
to create sustained climbs
Provides a sense of seclusion
and remoteness
Is in a heavily wooded area
Provides relief from the sun
during the hot summer months
Has sufficient mileage to keep
me occupied for an extended period of time.
Is in an location that would be
appropriate as a race venue
Is a well defined loop with a
very limited number of intersections
These are the phrases that I will use to ensure that
the land planners have an accurate view of the type of trail that I would like
to ride. Please come up with your own list of criteria and be sure to convey
them to the planners. Feel free to steal from my list as well.
Follow Up Meetings Once
the land planners have gathered their public input they will spend the
following week meeting with a steering committee and formulating a Master Plan
for the park. There will be several times during the Master Plan process when
the public can make comments on the progress of the park plans. It is important
that we have people showing up at these meetings to ensure that the planners
are accurately interpreting our interests. These meetings will be on the
following dates:
Wed. Nov. 1st, 4-5pm
– Analysis and Park Planning Pin-ups
Thurs. Nov 2nd, Evening (anytime after
5pm) – Presentation of design alternatives
Thurs. Nov. 9th, Evening (anytime
after 5pm) – Public Open House – Preferred Alternatives
If you have questions or comments please contact me.
If you cannot make it to any of the meetings, let me know and I can arrange for
you to comment outside the scope of the meetings.
There are two different trails at LOSP. The
old ones are the Trail of the four winds (I think) and they are rocky, eroded
horse trails that are kind of tough to ride. The others are the brand new (and “officially”
not open yet) Honey run trails. The Honey run system is about 12 miles I think
and is very fast and flowy with a few longer climbs. It is a trail the the Earthriders
have been working on for the past three years. It is suppose to get a
final inspection and open up in the next few weeks if all goes well. This trail
system is across the lake on the road to McCubbins Point camp ground. This
trail is very fun to ride and I have ridden is a few times after working on it
on different occasions. If you want more info or maps let me know .

Hello Lakers. Another in the endless series of LCC monthly meetings was held on October 3, 2006. Here's a good share of what we discussed:
Notable Items
There were no really historic or notable quotes this time. We were all still in awe of the "I can take it any way I want to" line from DD during the last meeting.
In keeping with tradition, one food order was forgotten (mine). I hope this improves for future meetings.
Kansas Police were issuing tickets for riding 2-abreast during Octaginta.
Since the meeting, cycling Badger was pulled-over by a Platte Woods police officer and informed that bicycles are banned from the roads in Platte Woods, along with Weatherby Lake, Lake Waukomis, and Parkville. Badger to issue a separate report on this.
Treasury
The treasurer was absent, but it was assumed that no funds had been stolen, lost, etc.
Brochure/Flyer
The latest up-to-date version is on the yahoo site and can be printed and distributed by anyone.
Flyers were placed at the Wheel and have been getting taken, hopefully by prospective members or riders.
Yahoo Site
No new sign-ups lately.
Fairly quiet as far as messages go in the last few weeks.
Keep the chatter going about group rides and alternate ride times, particularly when the weather starts to turn nasty and cold in the mornings.
Ride Schedule
Wednesday MTB is at 6:00 pm at Smokin Davey Trailhead, not the 7 pm reported last time.
Saturday Dam Rides still at 8:00 am until the weather turns bad.
Insurance
Will pursue a quote later in the year and begin coverage in February.
Club Logo
Waiting for Chapstick to submit ideas. Dover will follow-up with her.
Dover's artist coworker's idea or one of it's derivatives are the front runners right now.
Club Sponsorships
Side Pockets will sponsor at a rate of $10 per shirt/jersey.
Homeward Bound Health Care will definitely sponsor - this is Cricket's wife's business.
Latitudes will definitely sponsor - this is Cricket's Caribbean shop in Parkville
THANKS FOR THE GENEROUS OFFERS, CRICKET.
Platte Valley Bank definitely will NOT sponsor us per Hammer.
Shatto Dairy needs to be checked - Nail to follow-up.
The Wheel and Carter-Duffy Realty- Dover to check.
Cycle City - Timex to check.
Club Jerseys
Velo News article identified Hincapie and Louis Garneau as the best large vendors.Other smaller companies also perform this service.
It would be preferable if we can get the model name of a jersey from a vendor so we can check fit and construction at a local shop before we purchase them sight unseen.
A marketing/logo/shirt provider happened to overhear the club conversation and expressed interest and will contact Badger next week.
Need to check on cost per sponsor logo to make certain we are covering the cost of logo plus funding for the club.
Need to get more firm pricing of jerseys from vendors.
Officer Elections (That's ELECTIONS with an "L")
Say hello to V.P. Dover and Secretary Grizz, who were unanimously elected to two year terms by the club members present at the meeting.
No absentee ballots nor nominations were received.
Club Party - BBQ - Ride
Saturday October 28th
The Grizzes's Hacienda (location and directions will be emailed).
Optional road ride at 3:00 pm - about 11 miles - party to follow.
Optional MTB ride around their pond till you get dizzy - unless you are already dizzy before you start (I know a few of these people).
Grills available - bring your own meat to cook (Lamar to bring his wiener).
Bring a dish to pass (with food in it).
Bring lawn chairs, unless you are one of those dizzy people and prefer to be nearer to ground level.
B.Y.O.B.
AWARDS PRESENTATION TO THE TIME TRIAL SERIES POINTS CHAMPION !!!
Bylaws
At the November meeting we will begin discussing club bylaws (which will probably be required when we join LAB and purchase their insurance next year).
Badger will borrow some examples of bylaws from other sources to review.
Membership Cards
We will issue club membership cards starting with the 2007 membership year.
Dover to design for review at the next meeting.
Upcoming Events
Moonshine Parkville ride and Dover's Halloween ride are on hiatus for now.
Fall party - see above.
BonkFest - Earthriders ride in Arkansas. Hammer and others are traveling to this ride.
Sadler's Indoor Racing - TBD
Brigade Football - TBD
Me thinks that's it...other than to say...
NEXT MEETING:
Tuesday Nov. 7th - Election Day (with an "L") - 7:00 pm
The Lakeside Cycling Club September meeting was called to order - or maybe the orders were called - at Side Pockets Restaurant and Billiards on September 5th. We had a good showing of members. It could have been the new time, the new location, or the full moon. Lots of business was discussed - such as the benefits of ordering the Tuesday special of buckets-o-beer. Other items are below...
Notable items:
DD declared: "I can take it any way I want to."
Treasury: we currently have $354 in the treasury.
Brochure/Flyer: Ride times and meeting time & location were updated after the meeting and are on the Yahoo site.
Yahoo site: Several new people have signed-on, but not known to anyone present at the meeting.
Ride Schedule:
Dam rides now start at 8:00 AM Saturdays till the weather forces us to arrange afternoon rides instead.
MTB Rides are 7 pm Wednesdays at Smokin Davey Trailhead.
Route Maps: It was decided by the group that we don't really need route maps for the Dam Rides. Most of the members and regular Dam Riders are very familiar with the roads in the Smithville Lake area and are capable of leading or following a route by memory, at least until we get a few more years behind us or a few more beers in us. Only the Special Rides will have maps drawn for them.
Ride Refreshments: Still doing good with donations.
Time Trials:
BADGER was the 2006 POINTS CHAMPION
DD was the 2006 POINTS CHAMPION OF OPPOSITE SEX
SOFTIE was the 2006 SPEED CHAMPION
We cut the minimum requirement for "MOST IMPROVED" to only 5 trials because there weren't many riders meeting the previous requirement for 8 trials. No decision on the MOST IMPROVED rider was made at the meeting.
NEED PRIZES - especially for BADGER - the 2006 POINTS CHAMPION
2007 Time Trials will be 2 laps at the downtown airport international speedway.
Insurance: We will join the League of American Bicyclists and begin the insurance program in February 2007. We still need a quote.
Club Logo: We had a submission from Dover's artist coworker and several follow-ups based on it. PLEASE ADD YOUR IDEAS TO THE PILE.
Club Sponsorship:
Side Pockets was offered discount technical "Under Armor" style shirts with their logo and an LCC logo on them.
Not too many of us would look good in Under Armor - since the Weasel is not a current member.
The club discussed and decided to pursue additional partial sponsorships from local businesses to apply toward nice cycling jerseys. Need to check on prices and styles.
Possible sponsors and those who will inquire: Schatto Dairy and Platte Valley Bank (Hammer), The Wheel (Dover), Side Pockets (Lamar), Cycle City (?).
Hammer also thought Platte Valley Bank and Schatto may be interested in sponsoring the Sucky Century.
Officer Nominations and Elections:
Elections for Vice President and Secretary (2 year terms) will be held at the October meeting.
Dover was nominated for Vice President
Dover is primarily associated with the Beer Party and has been a leader in many areas this year, so we figured we'd teach him to be so active by Shanghaiing him into an office (not the corner one).
Grizz was nominated for Secretary
Grizz is one of the most computer-literate in the club (he has his own web site) and actually makes it to darn near every meeting. Even with Grizz's presence at the meeting, we were able to start the railroading process. His later protest via email only proved how fit he is for this office.
Any member up-to-date on club dues may be nominated and elected to office at the October meeting.
Only members that are up-to-date on club dues are able to vote.
Upcoming Events:
Lamar's Weiner (ride) was Saturday 9/9/06. Rain
Octaginta
Moonshine Parkville Ride - date TBD
Dover's Scary Halloween Ride - TBD
Fall Party - Grizzs's possibly 10/28. Need to decide at October meeting.
Sadler's Racing Outing - TBD
Brigade Football - February or March
Bonk Fest - Earthriders MTB ride in Arkansas - Leave KC on Wed. 10/11 thru 10/15
NEXT MEETING: Tuesday October 3rd - 7:00 PM at Side Pockets, US-169 & Englewood Road (600 NW Englewood)

In advance of the next meeting notice (and the last meeting notes) - here is notice of the annual convention and nominations for this year's open offices...
The offices of Vice President and Secretary are open this year and will be voted upon at the October meeting. During the September meeting, the following club members were nominated for these two offices:
Vice President - from the Liberty Party - Ben (Dover) Bolin
Secretary - from the Computer-Savvy Party - Mike (Grizz) Casper
Please note that both candidates also have an affiliation with the Beer Party.
ADDITIONAL NOMINATIONS WILL BE CONSIDERED VIA LCC EMAIL OR AT THE OCTOBER MEETING.
Elections will be held at the OCTOBER LCC Meeting. Members who have paid their 2006 dues are eligible to vote. NO PHOTO ID REQUIRED (except to enter our meeting establishment, Side Pockets). Those club members who are unable to vote in person may submit nominations and absentee ballots via the group email BEFORE the October 3rd meeting.
It looks there is a website dedicated
to cycling routes. It has elevation, creates turn slips and the rest
of it is just like the GMaps or USAT site. I've been messing with
it and it's pretty slick with a few quirks to figuring out how it all works.
Cool.

Subject: [LakesideCycling] Club Logo - rough sketch
Date: Thu, 7 Sep 2006 15:34:07 -0500
Here is a rough sketch for a logo design. Before she does anymore with it
she would like to make sure it is something that everyone likes. Everyone
please let me know if it is or is not something you like.
Dr. Dover
Here is a rough sketch for a logo design.
Before she does anymore with it she would like to make sure it is
something that everyone likes. Everyone please let me know if it
is or is not something you like.
The 2006 Sucky Century was a great success with 27 riders attending.
The day was perfect and it seemed like everyone had a great time.
I posted photos to the group site. The new camera didn't focus quite
like I was hoping, but they are still OK photos.
Dr. Dover
Grizz,
Remind me never to let you take photos of any event that I am in.
I love the training wheels on Lamar's bike. The commentary on each
photo was killing me!
Dover
As you recall...our Time Trial Cliffhanger on August 7th left us with the following questions:
1. Can the Badger finish high enough to grab the season title away from Softie?
2. Will Lamar be able to smooth his "wheels" by using a rubbing motion before the next race?
3. Who will triumph when the currently tied Grizz and Lamar duke it out for 3rd place?
4. Can Moonshine keep his single point lead over Dover for 4th?
5. Can Chapstick score 25 more points in one race than DD to claim the women's division?
6. Is Morley Safer?
7. Would Dan Rather?
8. Is Deborah Harry?
9. How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
Questions 1 through 5 were answered at the final time trial for 2006 on August 14th. The rest of them will require some internet research.
This trial was two laps of the Wheeler International Speedway, as decided upon in the August LCC meeting. Moonshine, Unnamed John, Grizz, and Lamar comprised the first group on the road. Badger was a little late because of an appointment in downtown Mission, KS that lasted till 6:00. So he deserved, but didn't receive, extra points for getting to the airport before the first group of riders finished their time trials. In this group, Moonshine blazed a time of 19:43 for two laps in an effort to displace both Grizz and Lamar from their possible podium finishes. But Grizz with a 20:14 finished ahead of Lamar's 20:29 and locked-up third place for the year. John put everything he had into his first-ever time trial and finished with a 24:39.
Now it was time for DD and Badger to crank it up. DD had the women's division all sewn up and was pedaling for pride, but Badger had to finish in 5th or better to squeak past Softie for the season points title. Negative splits served the Badger well, as he cruised to a second place for the night and captured the season points championship.
The category of fastest average speed based on the three fastest trials for the year belongs to Softie, with an average time of 9:00 and speed of 24.33 mph for his three fastest trials. Note that the final two-lap trial was not included in any seasonal average time nor average speed calculations.
The category for most improved is in the hands of the membership. Be prepared to nominate someone (preferably someone who participated in the time trials) and present your reasoning why they should be named "Most Improved"
Everyone liked the two-lap format. It combined raw speed with a little more endurance and a modicum of pace strategy. If we hold the trials at the Wheeler International Speedway again next year, two laps should be the distance.
Greetings from the Free and Independent State of North of the River.
The Lakeside Cycling Club held it's monthly meeting on August 1st and got right down to business - of ordering food and drinks. We eventually got around to club stuff - and heeeeeeeere it is...
Membership - We have two new (dues-paid) club members:
Jim Berger - also known as "Yak" (for those who haven't heard the story of that name - let's just say is came after a hard mountain bike ride on an unsettled stomach).
John Summers - who will need a name. John joins us looking for advice and new cycling experiences as he rides into top shape. He has since ridden with us from the dam on Saturday 8-5.
Treasury
Current accounting is $334, plus the dues from John.
Brochure/Flyer
Dover will be adding the disclaimer to the flyer and making more copies to distribute.
Yahoo Group Site
We have several new people on the site. One was discovered to be in India and looking for donations. This person was removed from the group. Other new people have tended to not include any personal info, so we remain in the dark until or unless they show at rides.
Disclaimer has been added to the home page.
Time Trial results are in an Excel file in the "files" section.
There are a number of new pictures added from several recent races and events.
Ride Schedule
Briefly discussed the fall time change for the Saturday Dam Ride.
We will discuss and decide at what date to change to 8:00 am during the September meeting.
Route Maps
The route for (planned) pre-RAGBRAI century was mapped on the geo-pedometer site and reworked with instructions by Nail and Dover. It's on the group site.
Ride Refreshments
We continue to do well with donations.
Time Trials
Only two trials remaining: 8-7 and 8-14.
The final time trial will be TWO LAPS with the normal points for placements (not double-points), per the vote of the club members.
Review of Prize Categories as decided in the June meeting:
Points Champion - Most total points, no limit on participation.
Fastest Average Speed of a rider's 3 fastest trials.
Most Improved Rider (8-Trial Minimum) based on vote of members.
Prizes
Need to investigate donations or discounts from LBSs.
No actual prizes decided - will see what can be done.
Insurance
Yak (a legal beagle) advised it would be worthwhile.
Need actual quote from the LAB program (Badger)
Need info from similar clubs. Anyone with contacts in other clubs are requested to inquire as to whether they have insurance and the rationale for why or why not.
Club Logo
Calling all would-be artists - submit your ideas NOW.
Club Sponsorship
Looking for ideas or contacts.
Lamar may have a contact with Side Pockets.
Fall Party/Picnic/Awards Ceremony
The Grizzes have volunteered their hacienda for this event.
More details to be discussed at the September meeting.
Officer Elections
Nominations will be considered for the offices of Vice President and Secretary, whose terms are up this year.
Terms are two-years, but there are no limits on the amount of terms.
Vote at the October meeting(?) - so, to avoid being railroaded or Shanghaied, you better be there!
Upcoming Club Events
Sucky Century
Need details of route, time, etc.
Will need to create flyer for distribution with all info VERY SOON (Dover volunteered, but he needs the info).
Lamar's Wiener Ride and Roast
Lamar wasn't present, so this remains an open item.
Moonshine's Parkville Ride
Moonshine suggested a reschedule of the (mostly) rained-out Parkville ride from last July 4th.
Open item to be discussed and scheduled. Possibility of combining this and the Wiener Roast?
Other Local Events
Du-State-Du in Loud Thunder Preserve, near Andalusia, IL - August 20 www.qcbc.org
Here you go!
Softie 9.05
Yak 9.23
Moonshine 9.34
Lamar 9.48
Mike 9.51
DD 11.07
Hey I could have done better but Lamar won't let me use
his new time trial bike!
Whats up with that?
DD
It was a tad warm for the time trial this Monday. Even Travis should agree that 104 with a heat index of 120 might be enough to have an effect on the bloodstream. A small group of hearty filleted soles baked out on the pavement.
Lamar showed-up with his new "aerobars" that just happened to come with a free Trek Equinox triathlon bike attached to them. So now we know - it WAS the bike. The rider has NOTHING to do with it.
Yak made it for his second trial and officially joined the club. With that, he is now able to collect TT points towards that all-important Lakeside TT Champion title. The results from 7-10-06 have been revised to show Yak's placement and points as a club member.
One other point to mention - I misplaced the time sheet for this week, but the results listed here should be accurate within a second and will not affect the placements. I will fix any discrepancies when I find that piece of paper. The Excel file is on the group web site.
Here's the conditions this week:
Temp = 104 Heat Index = 120 Sunny Humidity = 47% Wind = S @ 14
