Membership:  It's time to burn off the donuts!  Renew your memberships soon!

Renewal forms are On-Line.  Feel free to print extras for your co-workers, friends, and family.

Fill them out and turn them in at a future ride or club event.

·         Members who renewed at the Monthly Meeting

Our Prez who keeps the show running: Keith aka Badger

Our Treasurer who keeps the treasure chest: Sherry aka DD,

The Secrerary who keeps forgetting to take notes: Mike aka Griz

And the ones who keep drinking beers: (in order of appearance)

Greg aka Moonshine

Richard aka Timex

Steve aka Lamar

·         New Members

Berna Sue aka no nick names that I'm allowed to share

Membership cards:  Pending Design, Approval, and what else? Oh yeah, Production.

Treasury report:   The Treasurer did not have the current balance with her but she stated that   "No funds have been stolen or lost" thus dispelling rumors from last month's meeting about how Lamar has been financing all his new bikes.

Flyers:  Greg needs more copies to place in the bike shops he frequents.  We keep nailing Ben (Dover) with the printing task. If anyone else has access to a quality color two sided printing device, please let us know so we don't wear Ben out.

Bike Schedule and Scheduling Winter Rides:   We discussed what to do about our normally scheduled Saturday morning rides since we never know if it's going to be 50 or 15 at 8am and there is some discrepancy on the definition of "acceptable riding weather."

It was determined that we should utilize this Web Sites Message/Posting to coordinate times and locations. So keep your eye on the weather forecasts and post messages about what time you think will provide the best ride conditions.

Club Insurance:  No updates

Club Logo:   We have not received any new Logo designs for two months, so we decided to go with one of the designs from Ben's artist co-worker friend.

CLUB SPONSORSHIP:   The meeting is currently being held at one of our potential sponsor's locations. They did not forget any food orders for the first time in three meetings! However the service staff was still slower than Griz during hibernation. We're a happy fun loving group, we'll wait for new and slower riders, we'll wait for riders doing roadside repairs, just don't make us wait for drink or food!

We are still open for more sponsorship suggestions to add to our current list.

·         Richard is going to ask Joe (from Cycle City) about sponsoring our club.

·         Others were mentioned but I did not get it documented on who was checking with whom.

·         If you think someone might be interested, then get off your tail and ask them!

 CLUB Jerseys:

·         We still need to find out how much it will cost for various size logo's on various locations on the jerseys before next months meeting!  We need this information to help potential sponsors determine what they want to do.

·         Our goal is for each sponsor to at least double the amount it will cost to have their logo added to the jerseys.

·         Badger to follow up with Ben about the Jerseys.

·         Travis mentioned being able to get samples to check out sizes if we give vendors a deposit.

Constitution & Bylaws:  Keith brought examples from various other clubs to the meeting. He will whip out something about the bylaws and will send it out for review before next meeting. We may or may not have assigned a sub committee for reviewing them.

Time Trials for next year:  Planning to hold them at the Downtown Airport again in 2007.  It will be a two lap format this year.  (roughly 7 miles)

We're looking for ideas on how to streamline the race next season. Splitting the group and having two separate races where a couple people volunteer to time and wait till the first group finishes before they get to race will extend the overall length of our races with the two lap format.  If you have thoughts on how to improve on that method please let us know.

Current suggestions and thoughts are:

Switch timers as soon as the first person finishes and can take over, rather than waiting for the entire first group to finish before changing timers.

Beg some non-riding friends or family to be our timer(s).

Get a sponsor to donate a multi thousand dollar chip timing system!!

Time Trials Prizes for this year:

At the very least, we'll have some very nice Certificates of Accomplishment for them at next month meeting.

Upcoming events:

Gracemore 5K Nov 11

Jingle Bell run at Zona Rosa Nonv 19

Several members are doing the Turkey Trot 5K on Thanksgiving morning.

New Years day Tom and Jerry's Time Trial.  Location and time TBD next month

OPEN Discussion

  • Several members had fun at the Shoal Creek Wilderness Run.  In keeping with tradition, Sherry's race number was 691.
  • Since many of us are active with other sports, we thought it should be okay to add other Running, Swimming, Orienteering, or other similar events or training schedules to the calendar.
  • If I'm not mistaken, Oct 28th was Greg (Moonshines) 22nd birthday anniversary.
  • Sherry is following a proven training plan to prepare for Rock n Roll Marathon.
  • Steve is using the R&R training plan to prepare for the R-n-R marathon.

FIMQ (Foot In Mouth Quote) of the meeting:   "I can go both ways"

  • Spoken by: Richard
  • What we believe Richard really meant:  "I can take it any way I want"

Another opportunity to speak up for more multi use trails. I will be out there. There is trail building going on 8:00 to 12:00 out there also. Let me know if you are interested in helping out.

Also put on your calendar, trail building day at Smithville trails is on for December 2.

The trail building hammer

The Johnson County Park and Recreation District will be holding a public comment forum on October 21st to solicit input regarding future use of the Oakridge Farm area and Mack House at Shawnee Mission Park. This area is due north of the existing mountain bike trail system. If you have ridden or run off-road at SMP in the past two years I’m sure you are aware of the Phase 1 changes to the existing trail system. We plan to complete Phase 1 by the end of this year and will be looking to get started on Phase 2 very soon afterward. The Phase 2 trail system will be within the aforementioned Oakridge Farm area. I have mapped out Phase 2 with a proposed 10 mile loop and I plan to present this proposal to the County for their approval. If we can get a significant representation of trail users to attend this public input meeting and express their interest in a singletrack trail system I am extremely confident that the proposed trail would be approved.

We have an incredible opportunity here to develop a sizeable trail system in the heart of Johnson County. Even if you don’t live in JoCo, there will be enough trail here to make the drive worthwhile. Please participate in the public input meetings. Don’t leave it to others. Make a day of it, come out and ride or run first then just drop by the park office on your way out.

When/Where
The public input meeting will be held:
Saturday, October 21st at 12:15pm
JCPRD Admin Boardroom (at the Renner entrance to SMP)
7900 Renner Rd.

This is a “social” meeting. You don’t need to stand up in front of a crowd of people to get your point across and there is no official start time. Just swing by between 12:15 and 1pm.

The County has arranged for a hayride tour of the Oakridge Farm area starting from the Mack House. You can join a tour anytime between 10am and noon.

The hayrides will be held:
Saturday, October 21st from 10:00am until noon
at the Mack House

Keywords

It is very important for trail users to accurately convey to the planners the type of trail that they are interested in using. For all they know, mountain bikers want a 12 foot wide chat path on flat terrain, running through a field. I personally, am interested in a trail that meets the following criteria:

  • Singletrack with no more than an 18 inches of compacted tread
  • Built on natural terrain with a natural surface
  • Flows well yet has technical challenges
  • Takes advantage of the topology to create sustained climbs
  • Provides a sense of seclusion and remoteness
  • Is in a heavily wooded area
  • Provides relief from the sun during the hot summer months
  • Has sufficient mileage to keep me occupied for an extended period of time.
  • Is in an location that would be appropriate as a race venue
  • Is a well defined loop with a very limited number of intersections

These are the phrases that I will use to ensure that the land planners have an accurate view of the type of trail that I would like to ride. Please come up with your own list of criteria and be sure to convey them to the planners. Feel free to steal from my list as well.

Follow Up Meetings
Once the land planners have gathered their public input they will spend the following week meeting with a steering committee and formulating a Master Plan for the park. There will be several times during the Master Plan process when the public can make comments on the progress of the park plans. It is important that we have people showing up at these meetings to ensure that the planners are accurately interpreting our interests. These meetings will be on the following dates:

Wed. Nov. 1st, 4-5pm – Analysis and Park Planning Pin-ups
    Thurs. Nov 2nd
, Evening (anytime after 5pm) – Presentation of design alternatives
    Thurs. Nov. 9th
, Evening (anytime after 5pm) – Public Open House – Preferred Alternatives

Ongoing dicussions regarding the public input can be found here:
http://forums.earthriders.com/viewtopic.php?p=10898#10898

You can view the JCPRD press release regarding the public input here:
http://www.jcprd.com/apps/news/specific_record_info.cfm?id=852

If you have questions or comments please contact me. If you cannot make it to any of the meetings, let me know and I can arrange for you to comment outside the scope of the meetings.

There are two different trails at LOSP. The old ones are the Trail of the four winds (I think) and they are rocky, eroded horse trails that are kind of tough to ride. The others are the brand new (and “officially” not open yet) Honey run trails. The Honey run system is about 12 miles I think and is very fast and flowy with a few longer climbs. It is a trail the the Earthriders have been working on for the past three years. It is suppose to get  a final inspection and open up in the next few weeks if all goes well. This trail system is across the lake on the road to McCubbins Point camp ground. This trail is very fun to ride and I have ridden is a few times after working on it on different occasions. If you want more info or maps let me know .

Hello Lakers.  Another in the endless series of LCC monthly meetings was held on October  3, 2006.  Here's a good share of what we discussed:
  • Notable Items
    • There were no really historic or notable quotes this time. We were all still in awe of the "I can take it any way I want to" line from DD during the last meeting.
    • In keeping with tradition, one food order was forgotten (mine).  I hope this improves for future meetings.
    • Kansas Police were issuing tickets for riding 2-abreast during Octaginta.
    • Since the meeting, cycling Badger was pulled-over by a Platte Woods police officer and informed that bicycles are banned from the roads in Platte Woods, along with Weatherby Lake, Lake Waukomis, and Parkville.  Badger to issue a separate report on this.
  • Treasury
    • The treasurer was absent, but it was assumed that no funds had been stolen, lost, etc.
  • Brochure/Flyer
    • The latest up-to-date version is on the yahoo site and can be printed and distributed by anyone.
    • Flyers were placed at the Wheel and have been getting taken, hopefully by prospective members or riders.
  • Yahoo Site
    • No new sign-ups lately.
    • Fairly quiet as far as messages go in the last few weeks.
    • Keep the chatter going about group rides and alternate ride times, particularly when the weather starts to turn nasty and cold in the mornings.
  • Ride Schedule
    • Wednesday MTB is at 6:00 pm at Smokin Davey Trailhead, not the 7 pm reported last time.
    • Saturday Dam Rides still at 8:00 am until the weather turns bad.
  • Insurance
    • Will pursue a quote later in the year and begin coverage in February.
  • Club Logo
    • Waiting for Chapstick to submit ideas. Dover will follow-up with her.
    • Dover's artist coworker's idea or one of it's derivatives are the front runners right now.
  • Club Sponsorships
    • Side Pockets will sponsor at a rate of $10 per shirt/jersey.
    • Homeward Bound Health Care will definitely sponsor - this is Cricket's wife's business.
    • Latitudes will definitely sponsor - this is Cricket's Caribbean shop in Parkville
      • THANKS FOR THE GENEROUS OFFERS, CRICKET.
    • Platte Valley Bank definitely will NOT sponsor us per Hammer.
    • Shatto Dairy needs to be checked - Nail to follow-up.
    • The Wheel and Carter-Duffy Realty- Dover to check.
    • Cycle City - Timex to check.
  • Club Jerseys
    • Velo News article identified Hincapie and Louis Garneau as the best large vendors. Other smaller companies also perform this service.
    • It would be preferable if we can get the model name of a jersey from a vendor so we can check fit and construction at a local shop before we purchase them sight unseen.
    • A marketing/logo/shirt provider happened to overhear the club conversation and expressed interest and will contact Badger next week.
    • Need to check on cost per sponsor logo to make certain we are covering the cost of logo plus funding for the club.
    • Need to get more firm pricing of jerseys from vendors.
  • Officer Elections (That's ELECTIONS with an "L")
    • Say hello to V.P. Dover and Secretary Grizz, who were unanimously elected to two year terms by the club members present at the meeting.
    • No absentee ballots nor nominations were received.
  • Club Party - BBQ - Ride
    • Saturday October 28th
    • The Grizzes's Hacienda (location and directions will be emailed).
    • Optional road ride at 3:00 pm - about 11 miles - party to follow.
    • Optional MTB ride around their pond till you get dizzy - unless you are already dizzy before you start (I know a few of these people).
    • Grills available - bring your own meat to cook (Lamar to bring his wiener).
    • Bring a dish to pass (with food in it).
    • Bring lawn chairs, unless you are one of those dizzy people and prefer to be nearer to ground level.
    • B.Y.O.B.
    • AWARDS PRESENTATION TO THE TIME TRIAL SERIES POINTS CHAMPION !!!
  • Bylaws
    • At the November meeting we will begin discussing club bylaws (which will probably be required when we join LAB and purchase their insurance next year).
    • Badger will borrow some examples of bylaws from other sources to review.
  • Membership Cards
    • We will issue club membership cards starting with the 2007 membership year.
    • Dover to design for review at the next meeting.
  • Upcoming Events
    • Moonshine Parkville ride and Dover's Halloween ride are on hiatus for now.
    • Fall party - see above.
    • BonkFest - Earthriders ride in Arkansas.  Hammer and others are traveling to this ride.
    • Sadler's Indoor Racing - TBD
    • Brigade Football - TBD
Me thinks that's it...other than to say...
  • NEXT MEETING:
    • Tuesday  Nov. 7th - Election Day (with an "L") - 7:00 pm
    • Side Pockets - US 169 & Englewood Road
    • Don't forget to VOTE Early and Often

The Lakeside Cycling Club September meeting was called to order - or maybe the orders were called - at Side Pockets Restaurant and Billiards on September 5th.  We had a good showing of members.  It could have been the new time, the new location, or the full moon.  Lots of business was discussed - such as the benefits of ordering the Tuesday special of buckets-o-beer.  Other items are below...
  • Notable items:
    • DD declared: "I can take it any way I want to."
  • Treasury: we currently have $354 in the treasury.
  • Brochure/Flyer: Ride times and meeting time & location were updated after the meeting and are on the Yahoo site.
  • Yahoo site: Several new people have signed-on, but not known to anyone present at the meeting.
  • Ride Schedule:
    • Dam rides now start at 8:00 AM Saturdays till the weather forces us to arrange afternoon rides instead.
    • MTB Rides are 7 pm Wednesdays at Smokin Davey Trailhead.
  • Route Maps: It was decided by the group that we don't really need route maps for the Dam Rides.  Most of the members and regular Dam Riders are very familiar with the roads in the Smithville Lake area and are capable of leading or following a route by memory, at least until we get a few more years behind us or a few more beers in us.  Only the Special Rides will have maps drawn for them.
  • Ride Refreshments: Still doing good with donations.
  • Time Trials:
    • BADGER was the 2006 POINTS CHAMPION
    • DD was the 2006 POINTS CHAMPION OF OPPOSITE SEX
    • SOFTIE was the 2006 SPEED CHAMPION
    • We cut the minimum requirement for "MOST IMPROVED" to only 5 trials because there weren't many riders meeting the previous requirement for 8 trials.  No decision on the MOST IMPROVED rider was made at the meeting.
    • NEED PRIZES - especially for BADGER - the 2006 POINTS CHAMPION
    • 2007 Time Trials will be 2 laps at the downtown airport international speedway.
  • Insurance: We will join the League of American Bicyclists and begin the insurance program in February 2007.  We still need a quote.
  • Club Logo: We had a submission from Dover's artist coworker and several follow-ups based on it.  PLEASE ADD YOUR IDEAS TO THE PILE.
  • Club Sponsorship:
    • Side Pockets was offered discount technical "Under Armor" style shirts with their logo and an LCC logo on them.
      • Not too many of us would look good in Under Armor - since the Weasel is not a current member.
    • The club discussed and decided to pursue additional partial sponsorships from local businesses to apply toward nice cycling jerseys.  Need to check on prices and styles.
    • Possible sponsors and those who will inquire: Schatto Dairy and Platte Valley Bank (Hammer), The Wheel (Dover), Side Pockets (Lamar), Cycle City (?).
    • Hammer also thought Platte Valley Bank and Schatto may be interested in sponsoring the Sucky Century.
  • Officer Nominations and Elections:
    • Elections for Vice President and Secretary (2 year terms) will be held at the October meeting.
    • Dover was nominated for Vice President
      • Dover is primarily associated with the Beer Party and has been a leader in many areas this year, so we figured we'd teach him to be so active by Shanghaiing him into an office (not the corner one).
    • Grizz was nominated for Secretary
      • Grizz is one of the most computer-literate in the club (he has his own web site) and actually makes it to darn near every meeting. Even with Grizz's presence at the meeting, we were able to start the railroading process.  His later protest via email only proved how fit he is for this office.
    • Any member up-to-date on club dues may be nominated and elected to office at the October meeting.
    • Only members that are up-to-date on club dues are able to vote.
  • Upcoming Events:
    • Lamar's Weiner (ride) was Saturday 9/9/06. Rain
    • Octaginta
    • Moonshine Parkville Ride - date TBD
    • Dover's Scary Halloween Ride - TBD
    • Fall Party - Grizzs's possibly 10/28.  Need to decide at October meeting.
    • Sadler's Racing Outing - TBD
    • Brigade Football - February or March
    • Bonk Fest - Earthriders MTB ride in Arkansas - Leave KC on Wed. 10/11 thru 10/15
  • NEXT MEETING:  Tuesday October 3rd - 7:00 PM at Side Pockets, US-169 & Englewood Road (600 NW Englewood)

My Fellow Laksiders:

In advance of the next meeting notice (and the last meeting notes) - here is notice of the annual convention and nominations for this year's open offices...

The offices of Vice President and Secretary are open this year and will be voted upon at the October meeting.  During the September meeting, the following club members were nominated for these two offices:

Vice President - from the Liberty Party - Ben (Dover) Bolin
Secretary - from the Computer-Savvy Party - Mike (Grizz) Casper

Please note that both candidates also have an affiliation with the Beer Party.

ADDITIONAL NOMINATIONS WILL BE CONSIDERED VIA LCC EMAIL OR AT THE OCTOBER MEETING.

Elections will be held at the OCTOBER LCC Meeting.  Members who have paid their 2006 dues are eligible to vote.  NO PHOTO ID REQUIRED (except to enter our meeting establishment, Side Pockets).  Those club members who are unable to vote in person may submit nominations and absentee ballots via the group email BEFORE the October 3rd meeting.

LET THE CAMPAIGNING BEGIN !!!

Thanks for your support.

I am the Badger, and I approve this message.

It looks there is a website dedicated to cycling routes.  It has elevation, creates turn slips and the rest of it is just like the GMaps or USAT site.  I've been messing with it and it's pretty slick with a few quirks to figuring out how it all works.

The day was perfect and it seemed like everyone had a great time.

I posted photos to the group site. The new camera didn't focus quite

Here is the metric option

Check it out.  I have followed it turn by turn twice and it all seems to make sense.  Let me know if anything needs to be adjusted.

I'll print them Friday when I get back in town.  I'll duplex them so they are on one sheet.

Grizz,

Remind me never to let you take photos of any event that I am in.

I love the training wheels on Lamar's bike. The commentary on each
photo was killing me!

As you recall...our Time Trial Cliffhanger on August 7th left us with the following questions:

1. Can the Badger finish high enough to grab the season title away from Softie?
2. Will Lamar be able to smooth his "wheels" by using a rubbing motion before the next race?
3. Who will triumph when the currently tied Grizz and Lamar duke it out for 3rd place?
4. Can Moonshine keep his single point lead over Dover for 4th?
5. Can Chapstick score 25 more points in one race than DD to claim the women's division?
6. Is Morley Safer?
7. Would Dan Rather?
8. Is Deborah Harry?
9. How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

Questions 1 through 5 were answered at the final time trial for 2006 on August 14th.  The rest of them will require some internet research.

This trial was two laps of the Wheeler International Speedway, as decided upon in the August LCC meeting.  Moonshine, Unnamed John, Grizz, and Lamar comprised the first group on the road.  Badger was a little late because of an appointment in downtown Mission, KS that lasted till 6:00.  So he deserved, but didn't receive, extra points for getting to the airport before the first group of riders finished their time trials.  In this group, Moonshine blazed a time of 19:43 for two laps in an effort to displace both Grizz and Lamar from their possible podium finishes.  But Grizz with a 20:14 finished ahead of Lamar's 20:29 and locked-up third place for the year.  John put everything he had into his first-ever time trial and finished with a 24:39.

Now it was time for DD and Badger to crank it up.  DD had the women's division all sewn up and was pedaling for pride, but Badger had to finish in 5th or better to squeak past Softie for the season points title.  Negative splits served the Badger well, as he cruised to a second place for the night and captured the season points championship.

The category of fastest average speed based on the three fastest trials for the year belongs to Softie, with an average time of 9:00 and speed of 24.33 mph for his three fastest trials.  Note that the final two-lap trial was not included in any seasonal average time nor average speed calculations.

The category for most improved is in the hands of the membership.  Be prepared to nominate someone (preferably someone who participated in the time trials) and present your reasoning why they should be named "Most Improved"

Everyone liked the two-lap format.  It combined raw speed with a little more endurance and a modicum of pace strategy.  If we hold the trials at the Wheeler International Speedway again next year, two laps should be the distance.

Greetings from the Free and Independent State of North of the River.

The Lakeside Cycling Club held it's monthly meeting on August 1st and got right down to business - of ordering food and drinks.  We eventually got around to club stuff - and heeeeeeeere it is...

  • Membership - We have two new (dues-paid) club members:
    • Jim Berger - also known as "Yak" (for those who haven't heard the story of that name - let's just say is came after a hard mountain bike ride on an unsettled stomach).
    • John Summers  - who will need a name.  John joins us looking for advice and new cycling experiences as he rides into top shape.  He has since ridden with us from the dam on Saturday 8-5.
  • Treasury
    • Current accounting is $334, plus the dues from John.
  • Brochure/Flyer
    • Dover will be adding the disclaimer to the flyer and making more copies to distribute.
  • Yahoo Group Site
    • We have several new people on the site.  One was discovered to be in India and looking for donations.  This person was removed from the group.  Other new people have tended to not include any personal info, so we remain in the dark until or unless they show at rides.
    • Disclaimer has been added to the home page.
    • Time Trial results are in an Excel file in the "files" section.
    • There are a number of new pictures added from several recent races and events.
  • Ride Schedule
    • Briefly discussed the fall time change for the Saturday Dam Ride.
    • We will discuss and decide at what date to change to 8:00 am during the September meeting.
  • Route Maps
    • The route for (planned) pre-RAGBRAI century was mapped on the geo-pedometer site and reworked with instructions by Nail and Dover.  It's on the group site.
  • Ride Refreshments
    • We continue to do well with donations.
  • Time Trials
    • Only two trials remaining: 8-7 and 8-14.
    • The final time trial will be TWO LAPS with the normal points for placements (not double-points), per the vote of the club members.
    • Review of Prize Categories as decided in the June meeting:
      • Points Champion - Most total points, no limit on participation.
      • Fastest Average Speed of a rider's 3 fastest trials.
      • Most Improved Rider (8-Trial Minimum) based on vote of members.
    • Prizes
      • Need to investigate donations or discounts from LBSs.
      • No actual prizes decided - will see what can be done.
  • Insurance
    • Yak (a legal beagle) advised it would be worthwhile.
    • Need actual quote from the LAB program (Badger)
    • Need info from similar clubs.  Anyone with contacts in other clubs are requested to inquire as to whether they have insurance and the rationale for why or why not.
  • Club Logo
    • Calling all would-be artists - submit your ideas NOW.
  • Club Sponsorship
    • Looking for ideas or contacts.
    • Lamar may have a contact with Side Pockets.
  • Fall Party/Picnic/Awards Ceremony
    • The Grizzes have volunteered their hacienda for this event.
    • More details to be discussed at the September meeting.
  • Officer Elections
    • Nominations will be considered for the offices of Vice President and Secretary, whose terms are up this year.
    • Terms are two-years, but there are no limits on the amount of terms.
    • Vote at the October meeting(?) - so, to avoid being railroaded or Shanghaied, you better be there!
  • Upcoming Club Events
    • Sucky Century
      • Need details of route, time, etc.
      • Will need to create flyer for distribution with all info VERY SOON (Dover volunteered, but he needs the info).
    • Lamar's Wiener Ride and Roast
      • Lamar wasn't present, so this remains an open item.
    • Moonshine's Parkville Ride
      • Moonshine suggested a reschedule of the (mostly) rained-out Parkville ride from last July 4th.
      • Open item to be discussed and scheduled.  Possibility of combining this and the Wiener Roast?
  • Other Local Events
  • Other Discussion Items
    • Last month Lamar asked whether there is interest in club members purchasing Brigade Football Tickets ($72 per season) and tailgating before games.
    • Last Month Badger suggested a club outing to Sadler's Indoor Racing - an indoor high-powered go-kart track
T-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-hat's all folks.

    Hello, Lakers.
It was a tad warm for the time trial this Monday.  Even Travis should agree that 104 with a heat index of 120 might be enough to have an effect on the bloodstream.  A small group of hearty filleted soles baked out on the pavement.

Lamar showed-up with his new "aerobars" that just happened to come with a free Trek Equinox triathlon bike attached to them.  So now we know - it WAS the bike.  The rider has NOTHING to do with it.

Yak made it for his second trial and officially joined the club.  With that, he is now able to collect TT points towards that all-important Lakeside TT Champion title.  The results from 7-10-06 have been revised to show Yak's placement and points as a club member.

One other point to mention - I misplaced the time sheet for this week, but the results listed here should be accurate within a second and will not affect the placements.  I will fix any discrepancies when I find that piece of paper.  The Excel file is on the group web site.

    Here's the conditions this week:
    Temp = 104     Heat Index = 120     Sunny     Humidity = 47%     Wind = S @ 14

And here are the big roasted wieners:
    1st Place:      Jim (Yak)               9:36     avg speed = 22.8    points = 10
    2nd Place:     Steve (Lamar)         9:53     avg speed = 22.2    points = 9
    3rd Place:      Keith (Badger)       10:03    avg speed = 21.8    points = 8
    4th Place:      Sherry (DD)           11:44    avg speed = 18.7    points = 7

    Point Standings for the year:
    1st:  Keith (Badger) = 61
    2nd: Dan (Softie) = 49
    3rd:  Ben (Dover) = 48
    4th:  Steve (Lamar) =  42

Another month has passed us by - and another installment of the lively and fun-filled Lakeside Cycling Club Monthly Meeting was held on July 11th.  A wide variety of topics were discussed - some of it even pertained to cycling.  Here we go...
    • Membership
      • We have several new people subscribed to the web site and join us for rides and time trials.
      • No actual club memberships were added this past month.
    • Treasury
      • We need an current account of the treasury for several proposed expenses.
    • Brochure/Flyer
      • A liability disclaimer will be added to this and the web site.  Since the meeting Badger proposed a disclaimer that is similar to that used by another cycling club and added it to the group web site.
      • More copies are needed for distribution to the local bike shops, gyms, etc.
    • Yahoo group web site
      • Several new subscribers as noted above.
      • New pictures, maps, and Time Trial Results have been added.
      • Since the meeting Badger added the above proposed disclaimer to the group web site.
    • Ride Schedule
      • Summer schedule now in effect:
        • Monday - Time Trial at downtown airport 6:00 pm.
        • Wednesday - MTB ride at Smokin' Davey trail head 6:30 pm
        • Saturday - Dam ride at the Smithville Lake Dam parking lot 7:30 am
        • Saturday - Pre-Dam-Ride-Ride - extra miles at the Dam - 6:30 am
    • Route Maps
      • Several route maps are currently listed on the USATF.org site.
      • A different site allowing direct links will be tried: www.gmap-pedometer.com
      • This site is used by other clubs and was used by Hammer and Nail to route the Century Ride for July 16th.
      • The actual need for maps has been questioned, since we generally regroup during rides.
    • Ride Refreshments
      • We have been doing well with "donated" drinks and cooler use - most rides have been served this way.
    • Time Trials
      • Monday Time Trials have gone well and the complete standings are available on the group site in a Microsoft Excel file.
      • Only club members who have paid membership dues for 2006 are eligible for prizes.
      • We will separate the women from the men, but our women competitors still must meet the minimum participation requirements agreed to earlier in the season.
      • Dover and Chapstick will check with The Wheel and River Market Cyclery, respectively, for possible donations or discounts for Time Trial prizes.
      • Prizes need to be discussed and decided upon during the August club meeting.
    • Insurance
      • This was a major topic of discussion.
      • The League of American Bicyclists (LAB) has an insurance program that is estimated to cost approximately $130 annually and would cover the club and its members against liability claims arising from any rides or events.
      • Other insurance policies are projected to cost approximately $300.
      • The general opinion of the club is to move forward with insurance, but questions remain.
      • Some clubs similar to LCC do not have insurance because they do not officially sponsor rides requiring fees.
      • Promoting rides and even putting the club logo on ride and race flyers does not appear to open the club up to liability claims, based upon the actions of a similar club.
      • More research is needed before the August meeting:
        • Contact more bicycle clubs to see if they have insurance or considered having insurance. (Badger, Dover, others)
        • Get legal advice (several members know legal beagles)
        • Obtain quote from the LAB insurance carrier. (Badger)
        • Discuss and decide the issue at the August meeting.
    • New Club Logo - CALLING ALL ARTISTIC PEOPLE
      • Lamar knows a graphic artist that may be able to make a new logo a reality.
      • All members are invited to produce sketches, drawings, or performance art for a new Lakeside Cycling Club logo.
      • The logo may be used on clothing, brochures, etc.
      • Bring ideas to the August meeting or email through the LCC group web site.
    • Club Sponsorship
      • Asking for sponsorship by businesses was discussed.
      • No definite plans were brought forward.
    • Upcoming Events:
      • Hammer and Nail are organizing a Pre-RAGBRAI Century ride this Sunday July 16th in Plattsburg.  See the group site for details and route map.  The ride starts at 6:00 am at the intersection of Highways 116 & 33.
      • LAMAR'S WEINER RIDE
        • Come out to ride, roast and bite Lamar's wieners.
        • Lamar will host a BBQ after a ride around the northland.
        • Date and route to be determined.
      • Sucky Century - Labor Day
        • No details of the route, yet.
        • Flyers will be distributed to publicize this free, non-supported ride.
        • Route will include stops at C-stores for your convenience.
      • Other Local or Non-Local Events
        • Prairie Punisher Du in Gardner, KS - July 29th
        • Smithville Challenge Adventure Race - July 30
        • Rose Brooks Challenge Women's Triathlon in Smithville - August 12

      • Badger suggested a club outing to Sadler's Indoor Racing - an indoor high-powered go-kart track.
        • "It's Awesome - They get up to about 60 mph. I averaged 43 on the tight road course layout." - Badger

A small group of LCCers plus a guest cranked out some fast times in the Time Trial on July 10th.  Jim - who was previously named "Yak" - joined us as an exhibitionist.  Jim was decked-out in the old Lakeside Cycling Club logo jersey and had ridden a few times with the "old" LCC.  Although Jim doesn't seem to particularly like the "Yak" label, Softie advised him to keep it.  You never know what other names could pop up, eh Softie?

    On to the trial.

Softie Dan raced to a new track record of 8:51, beating Hammer's old record of 8:58.  His record ride moved him ahead of Dover for second place in the season standings.  Moonshine scorched the road with his best time of the year and passed DD for 7th place for the season.  Badger clung to first overall despite coming in last this week while having his second best time of the year.  C'mon guys - give me a break.

As usual, the Time Trial excel file is posted on the Yahoo group site under "files".

    Excerpt:  TIME TRIALING FOR NON-RACERS

    Challenge!
You don't race so you wonder why you should devote any of your riding time to learning how to go faster. Sure, time-trialing ability is important for racing in TTs or even for holding off the pack in a breakaway attempt. But why train to gain solo speed when racing isn't your thing?

Time trialing isn't just for competition. In fact, it's the racing skill most often used in non-racing situations. Let's examine when ability against the clock is important and then look at some tips for going fast on your own.

---Steady, intense effort is a potent producer of fitness.
Even if you aren't training for competition, riding at 85-90% of your maximum heart rate once a week for 10-20 minutes will spike your fitness for tours, centuries and the weekend group ride.

    ---Time trial speed means safety.
Caught 5 miles from home with a thunderstorm brewing? Time trial to safety before the deluge hits. Suppose you get a puncture on the homeward commute shortly before dark. The ability to ride hard and fast will get you there before the sun sets.

---A weekly time trial varies your training.
Sure, moderately paced rides are fun and not too demanding. But a steady diet of cruising gets monotonous. Schedule a weekly hammerfest and you'll have something to get excited about.

    ---Time trialing improves climbing ability.
No big climbs nearby to train on? You can duplicate the power demands of climbing by time trialing into the wind for 15-30 minutes. Climbing and time trialing are mutually beneficial -- doing one activity improves your power for the other.

---Time trials are the best way to gauge your fitness.
Want to know if you're improving? You don't need an organized event. Simply mark off a 5- to 10-mile course on your favorite training roads and time yourself. Or chart your performance at a local time trial over several months. These events, often sponsored by a bike shop or cycling club, are fun and social. Riders of all inclinations show up for an evening of low-key competition.

Nearly perfect temperature, low humidity, and a rather strong north-by-northwest wind greeted the LCC time trialers this week.  The wind made the 2 miles on the backstretch feel like 100 Km and the little hill at the NW corner of the course feel like L'Alpe d'Huez.  At least we could fly at 25-30 mph down the home stretch.

Five of us - Badger, Richard, Grizz, Dover, and Lamar (in that order) - fought the wind and the wind won.  Actually, the times weren't that bad.  The top three were fairly close, with only a single second separating Badger and Grizz for 2nd and 3rd.

Just when Dover was breaking out the champagne to celebrate victory, along came Softie.  We threatened him with adding 5 minutes to his finishing time for being late, but he quickly concocted a rather lame excuse of being in a "work meeting".  Yeah, right.  We compromised on not letting him warm-up.  That didn't seem to make any difference as he burned a 9:48 for first place.

Don't forget...the current standings spreadsheet will be posted on the group site in the "files" section.  It is a Microsoft Excel file.   You will also notice a new page on the spreadsheet documenting the conditions.

On Monday night we had the largest Time Trial turn-out this year, and it was under oppressive 95 degree heat.  Eight LCCers raced just like elite track sprinting stars - the hotter the temp - the hotter the race.

The Hammer came down to show everyone up with the first crack of the 9:00 barrier this season.  Richard also made his first time trial run.

Badger, Dover, Moonshine, Lamar, and DD all did very well just one day after their 70-mile ride in the Tour de Cure.

FYI if the club joins the League of American Bicyclists ($35) and then buys the
regular club insurance (varies by membership but probably $93 in your case) then
the club members and leadership/organizers/volunteers are covered for any free
event. See info and applications here:

       http://www.bikeleague.org/members/club/index.php

If you hold a pay event then there is a separate, additional event insurance
that must be purchase for each pay event. That, too, varies by the number of
participants with a minimum of $93.

But still if you decide to just hold this as a non-pay event then you can get by
for $35 + $93 which is not bad. An additional benefit is that you have this
same coverage for any event the club holds, like weekly rides.

The coverage for members/participants is pretty small, like $2500 per incident.
But leaders/organizers/volunteers are have $1 million liability insurance from
this policy and that is the main reason for getting it.

According to Heather at The Wheel, if you don't charge a registration fee then there is no liability on the club's part.   She was the KCBC tour director for 2 years so I think she knows what she is talking about.  I'll do some more research on the insurance/ liability issues involved.  We have time.

I like the idea of just guaranteeing asphalt, convenience stores and a marked route. I think it will have an appeal for a little different crowd than the usual club century rider.  We wouldn't have to put anything on the flyer as far as club promotion.  It cold just be a ride flyer.  If people are riding with us they will eventually figure out that it is LCC that initiated the ride.

Would we want riders to register for a head count?  I guess if we aren't guaranteeing any sort of SAG there would be no reason for registration other than a count for some refreshments at the end.

Dam lawyers! ...Cricket:  Do you know any of the legal issues surrounding such and event?

I like the idea of advertising as much as possible and keeping it based on donations, I hate paying to ride, donations excepted! Not sure how much liability there would be for LLC if it was a printed flyer. I would not think it would be any different than the weekly rides issue.  I am up for cooking pancakes again and Nail and I can produce a GREAT metric and full century loop, complete with asphalt and convenience stores!

I like the idea of promoting our Labor Day fun fest............but then I'm not real sure what kind of liability issues we run into if we start putting something down in print.  I'm not much of a "legal eagle", but always felt like nobody was really on the hook for something wrong if we kind of did it all by just passing the word around.   I think we should keep it a free event as you describe below, with guarantee of breakfast, asphalt, occasional convenience stores,  and beverages at the conclusion......just my thoughts, for what it's worth..........Don

    [LakesideCycling] Sucky Century

Thinking waaayyy ahead for the Sucky Century. I am trying out the
Database function on the group site. It looks like it will work for a
projected rider count for the event.

I just want to put the concept out of putting up flyers in bike shops
for this event to promote it a bit. Should we make it a free event
with a good will donation for food for a couple of sags or just make
it a ride that just guarantees that there will be riders, gas
stations, and a marked route? Kind of BYOB (bring your own bike and
ride)event with no registration, fees or promises of anything other
than asphalt, but with an official start time, route, and a likely
turnout of more riders than the average weekend club ride.

(Sample) Flyer promotional statement: "Tired of paying fees all summer
long to ride 60 or 100 miles? Come ride the Sucky Century for FREE!
There is a chance it may suck, but what the heck...you and your
riding buddies won't be out any beer money to ride it."

Feedback is requested. Any and all...

On Monday night six LCCers raced in the best conditions so far in this Time Trial season, and the times showed it.  Moonshine trialed for the first time this year and had a great finish.  I, the Badger, again had somebody drafting me - in fact, a whole team.  I don't know if they can't resist me, or I need to shrink my wind profile.

Other than Dan, who cruised to a LCC Time Trial record time, the race was pretty tight with four riders within 17 seconds, and three within 8 seconds.

And...even though we start riders at 30 second intervals, there was a pack of 3 where 2 (Chapstick and Dan) crossed the line at exactly the same time and another (Grizz) was only a second behind them.  As the timer, I thought I made it very clear that riders were supposed to stay at least 10 seconds apart to allow time for me to record finishing times.  Also, I think we'll have to review the video to check for any drafting violations.  You'd think these triathletes would know the rules, wouldn't you?

To all the weather-weenies: we did, indeed, have a time trial on June 5th despite the threatening skies.  Three brave LCCers pedaled their way around the airport while dodging a few drops, finishing just before lightning struck and the clouds dropped a load.  The head wind made the home stretch tough and Badger had an unknown rider drafting him half the way around.  Lamar is in a time rut and has the most consistent times for the year - 10:27, 10:28, 10:27.

    Here's the results:
