Once again I'm late with these notes, but better late than later.
Much of our May meeting concentrated on the club picnic, which was held on Saturday May 13th. So, a lot of my notes are outdated. We had a great turn-out and a good time was had by all. I want to give a specialbig thanks to:
The Yearys - who pretty much set up the whole thing, including shopping for food and supplies, reserving the shelter, and setting up the picnic area.
The Caspers - who donated the delicious burgers.
Dan (no-name) Murphy - who brought his interesting and tasty home brews.
Other items discussed either at or since the meeting:
TIME TRIALS
Begin on May 15th at 6:00 PM at the downtown airport.
Meet at 6:00 PM in the parking lot north of Executive Beechcraft, near the traffic circle.
We have since had two trials - see the weekly TT reports for results.
SATURDAY DAM RIDES
Time is 8:00 AM through the end of May.
Time changes to 7:30 AM on the first Saturday of June (June 3rd)
The fast (18+ mph) and slow (<16 mph) will both start at the same time.
Meet in the FIRST parking lot just east of the dam on Highway DD. (NOT the Litton Center lot)
REFRESHMENTS
Discussed coolers for refreshments
Several liquid and chest-type coolers are available for $10 to $22
We have several members willing to donate the use of coolers, so purchasing one was put on hold.
Chapstick donated a 6-gallon package of GatorAde mix, which is being used at Time Trials.
Leftovers from the picnic should also be used at rides and TTs.
LAKESIDE CLUB BROCHURE
Badger sent the updates and revisions to Dover.
YAHOO GROUP SITE
We have several new members signed-up on the site - WELCOME TO OUR HUMBLE GROUP!!!
New photos have been added - check them out.
Badger and Dover will continue to monitor the messages and delete the outdated ones.
EVENTS
Memorial Day Ride - Monday May 29th
Come join the Hammer & Nail for an early morning Memorial Day spin from Plattsburg. We'll start out at 7:30 from the corner of Highway 116 & 33 (two miles east of Plattsburg) and go either 37 or 50 scenic miles, depending on the make-up and mood of the group that shows up. Should get you all home in plenty of time for memorial day festivities. Ride will conclude with some beverage carbo loading. Hope to see you there, and pass this along to anyone else you think may be interested.....Also will be doing a little longer ride on Sunday if anyone is interested.
LC2 Liberty Area Ride June 24th
Dover has proposed a "special" ride in the Liberty area for June 24th, possibly to Excelsior Springs. More details to come.
This would be our first "special" ride of the year and take the place of the Dam ride for that week.
Tour de Cure / Wheel to Weston - Lakeside Team - Sunday June 18th
The Wheel Cyclery has requested to join our group, which was heartily endorsed by the LC2 members that replied with their opinion.
There is a $100 minimum fund raising requirement PER RIDER for the Diabetes Foundation.
Toyota sponsoring the $15 entry fee for 7 riders.
Club members signed up as of 5-25-06 are: Dover, Nail, Moonshine, Lamar, & DD. On the fence are: Badger, Hammer, & Cricket.
KC Bike & Foot Chase - June 11th
50-mile or 20-mile ride from Zona Rosa.
Moonshine and Lamar are definitely riding, and Badger will probably ride.
LC2 Katy Trail Weekend
Shooting for a fall date.
Heritage Park Du and Triathlon
Lamar and Grizz competed in the tri and Badger in the Du.
NEXT MEETING - 6:30 PM TUESDAY JUNE 6th at Smithville Pizza Shoppe
The second week of the Lakeside Time Trial Series saw another good close battle and several painful riders. Lamar, Grizz, and Badger raced in the Heritage Park Tri- and Duathlon on Sunday, and (at least for the eldest participant) Monday was very painful. Dover showed no effects from his 70-mile charity ride on Saturday. The weather conditions were better than last week with no rain and a lighter wind. Lamar exactly matched his time from last week while everyone else improved and DD stayed inflated for the whole lap.
NOTE: THERE WILL BE NO TIME TRIALS ON MEMORIAL DAY !!!
The first installment of the 2006 Lakeside Cycling Club Time Trial Series was held at the downtown airport on Monday 5/15/06. We had a good group of racing enthusiasts that braved a rain shower, wet roads, a pesky northwest wind, and dirty bikes to test their strength against the clock. The course was one lap of the 3.65-mile airport loop from a dead start. The wind caused grief on the far side of the course, but helped the speed down the front stretch to the finish. It was a close race, with four riders within 22 seconds, and five riders within 39 seconds. Double-D flatted (!) less than a mile into her run, reducing her to walking-speed. Here's the finish order, and (since this was the first trial) the season standings:
Conditions:
Temperature = 64F Partly Cloudy Humidity = 63%
Wind = NW @ 12, gusts to 20 Wet Roads
1st Place: Dan (no name): 9:49 avg speed = 22.3 points = 10
A great time was had by all at the First Annual Lakeside Cycling Season Kickoff Ride and Picnic. We had a great turn-out, especially considering that several members had other commitments but still were able to come down to the park to eat, drink, and be merry. We have a great group that I hope will continue to grow as our name gets out there.
I would first like to lead a huge round of thanks and applause to The Yearys for pretty much arranging and executing the whole darn thing (including reserving the site, shopping for food and supplies, and setting up) and The Caspers for making and donating the great burgers we all enjoyed.
There was also some tasty home brew from the Murphy Brewery that many of us sampled. My favorite was the chocolate-mint. Don't knock it till you've tried it. It tasted like mint-chocolate-chip ice cream to me - although Darcie said it tasted like beer. (She's more of a martini-person.)
Not much riding was done - in fact, I think only two of us ventured onto the trails at Smith's Fork Park after soaking in the food and drink all afternoon. I guess that not every cycling club outing necessarily has to include cycling!
We've already have a volunteer to host another grand gala this summer - the Animal House. Just a note - they serve killer chicken (but they don't choke their own).
Well, the Lakeside Cycling Club didn't close the Pizza Shoppe this time, but we covered a lot of business to go along with the eats and drinks. Let's get to it. If I've made any omissions or mistakes, please let me know!
Spring Cycling Season Kick-off Cook-out
IT WILL HAPPEN - SATURDAY MAY 13th at NOON
Currently slated for Sailboat Cove on Smithville Lake
Lamar is checking with his neighborly Park Ranger to determine whether we would have access to picnic areas and/or shelter without the steep rental fee.
Alternatively, The Caspers have volunteered to host us in Casperspace.
LC2 will make a firm announcement about the site shortly.
WE WILL NEED AN RSVP FROM ALL THAT WILL BE ATTENDING THE COOKOUT by the MAY 2nd LC2 meeting.
The Casper's have also donated a hefty portion of cow for burgers.
LC2 will provide condiments, potato salads, burger buns, hot dogs & buns, chips, soda (a.k.a. "pop" to a few of you).
People who are attending please bring a desert or side dish and the alcoholic beverage of your choice, if you choose to imbibe.
Refreshments (Sponsored by LC2)
Lamar has determined that a supply of day-old donuts and Gatorade may be available from QT.
LC2 would need to provide a large Thermos-type of cooler for the GatorAde.
Alternatively, LC2 can provide GatorAde mix or large bottles (whichever is more economical) to fill individual water bottles.
LC2 will also supply some snacks to carry on rides, such as breakfast bars, granola bars, bagels, PowerBars, etc.
Publicity Flyers
The group reviewed the flyers and they (the flyers, not the group) will be slightly revised:
Update the "Summer" and "Winter" time periods as well as the starting times for the "fast" and "slow" paced Saturday rides. See the "Ride Schedule" section below for details.
Revise the wording to reduce the inference that people should use club resources long-term without officially joining or at least considering joining the club.
Flyers have been placed at Maple Woods Fitness Center, Summit Fitness, The Wheel, Cycle City.
These will need to be replaced once the revisions are made.
All members are encouraged to place the flyers in appropriate places, with the proper approval.
Up and running - messages, photos, and a few maps have been added.
Badger will "clean-out" the old, outdated messages on an ongoing basis.
Badger and Dover will again review the old KCCyclist list and invite people to join the new group site.
Anyone needing help in signing up to be a member of the group site should contact Dover or Badger. Note that the site can be viewed without being a member, but only registered group members can post and receive messages, etc.
Ride Schedule
"Summer" will be defined as May to October.
Regularly scheduled Saturday "fast" rides from the dam will start on the first Saturday of May at 8:00 AM. The start time will change to 7:30 on the first Saturday of June. The time will revert back to 8:00 approximately the first of September.
The "slow" Saturday rides will start at 10:00 AM at the dam. This time will remain constant through the summer.
The goal is to have the "fast" and "slow" groups meet at the parking lot between the rides for refreshments and yakking or buffalo-ing.
No other LC2 rides are regularly scheduled at this time except for Monday Time Trials.
Members are encouraged to organize rides during the week via the group site email.
KCBC has some new rides in the Northland. Check their website: www.kcbc.org
Ride Maps
Badger is working on this and will load them on the group site as they are completed. Dover may need to assist in adding notes to the pdf versions.
Time Trials
Time Trials will begin on Monday May 15th at 6:00 PM at the downtown airport.
Meet and park in the lot just north of Executive Beechcraft near the traffic circle.
Trials are one lap of the airport loop.
The actual starting spot will be on the west side of the loop to avoid traffic in the start/finish area.
Points system will be similar to previous years, but additional award categories are being planned.
Ride Events and Races
Tour de Cure Wheel to Weston Team - Lakeside Cycling Club Presented by Toyota
After some confusion, it appears that we do have Toyota sponsorship for 7 riders' $15 entry fee and also a donation towards Dover's fund raising goal.
Riders are responsible for their own fund raising to meet their personal goal.
Dover has a vehicle to transport about 6 riders back from Weston.
Dover will be getting Toyota shirts for team members - give him your size.
Heritage Park Bike Source Duathlon/Triathlon
Badger will compete in the Du, while Lamar and Grizzly will compete in the Tri.
There seems to be a wager (friendly or otherwise) between Grizz and Lamar - stay tuned.
RAGBRAI
Hammer and Cricket are definitely going for the entire ride. Dover for the final half.
You probably all saw this, but it didn't get through on the Yahoo group mail the first time, so here I try again...

Our crowd once again closed the Pizza Shoppe for the 5th consecutive time after a meeting featuring lively banter, some deadly banter, food, drink, and a huge decision about Sherry's name. With so much to cover - I'd better get to it...
Membership news:
A star from LC2 history - Hammer - has been added to the official list of members.
Publicity Flyers are now complete, many thanks to Ben (Dover) and our unofficial committee - the Flying Circus.
Dover emailed the file to the membership and everyone is welcomed - and encouraged - to distribute them in suitable places such as: bike shops, fitness centers, sporting goods stores, etc. So, if you frequent just such a place, please leave a stack of flyers (after receiving approval from the management, of course). Another copy is attached.
CLUB DISCOUNTS are now available at the following bike shops: The Wheel, Cycle City, and (new) The Trek Store. Many thanks to Moonshine for securing the discounts at Cycle City and the Trek Store. Moonshine is also planning to check with River Market Cyclery.
Most members are already logged into the site, but those that are not can do so on their own by following the link above.
Messages, Calendars, and Pictures can be posted on the site.
Badger added our link to the KCBC site.
Club Treasury:
The club paid for a floral tribute to Marty Issacson (wife of former member Dale-Gearboy-Issacson), who passed away.
We are still at a standstill as far as retrieving the pre-2005 club funds - not for the lack of trying. Previous (not current) club members will not release the funds to the current officers for unknown reasons.
Plans for the use of the treasury include: supplies for the Spring Cycling Season Kick-off Cook-out and ride, refreshments for club members before, after and during rides, and the various incidental items that a club requires.
E-MAIL LIST
With the introduction of the new Yahoo group for the club, the old KCCYCLIST.COM email list will no longer be maintained. This is the FINAL communication that will be made by the club via KCCYCLIST.COM. ALL FUTURE COMMUNICATION WILL BE DONE VIA THE YAHOO GROUP LIST ACCESSED FROM THE LINK ABOVE.
PLEASE NOTE: All former members who have not paid club dues will be dropped from the list. This time we WILL FOLLOW THROUGH with the threat!
Spring Cycling Season Kick-off Cook-Out and Ride
Finally, we've set a date for this major event: SATURDAY MAY 13TH 2006 at SAILBOAT COVE on SMITHVILLE LAKE at HIGH NOON.
LC2 will provide some supplies. Exact items will be determined at the April meeting.
The club will not be able to furnish beer or other alcoholic beverages. We will check to see if they are allowed in the park. If so, individuals would be allowed to BYOB.
Trail rides can be either before or after the cook-out lunch.
More details will be determined at the April meeting.
Route Maps and Pace Groups
Badger showed several examples of route maps constructed from the USATF.org website. One version was straight off the web site, another was first cropped and then put into pdf format. We decided to go with the pdf format, which allows us to add notes and labels to the maps (those of us with Adobe Acrobat software, anyway). We can also place the pdf maps on the LC2 group web site and email them to members.
Both the fast and slow pace groups will start from the dam parking lot on Saturdays. The slow group may start at a slightly later time, however. The routes will be predetermined so that both groups will return to the dam lot at about the same dam time. We can then share the dam refreshments between the dam groups.
Steve (Lamar) brought maps of the Smithville Lake trails and area from Clay County. More copies are available.
Wheel to Weston Team
Dover has secured 7 sponsorships from Toyota for riders that are Lakeside Cycling Club members. Sponsorship includes the $15 entry into the ride. We currently do not know exactly how the ride entries will be paid.
Riders will be responsible for their own contributions to their individual fundraising goal.
Other Rides and Races
Badger will be racing in the Heritage Park Bikesource Duathlon on May 21st. Let's get more club members out there.
KC Bike & Foot Chase at Zona Rosa June 11th - 5K run OR 50-mile OR 20-mile bike ride http://www.kcphs.org/3.html
Note that the Broadway Bridge Run is being resurrected this year and will be held on April 23rd.
LC2 KATY TRAIL WEEKEND - future planning for a summer weekend either camping or B&B.
RAGRAI - Several club members are planning on traveling to Iowa for this tour across Iowa.
Ride to the Beach - the MS150 from San Antonio to Corpus Christi, TX Lamar & Double-D have some info.
Nicknames
In response to a former member's email, the membership resolved that non-members are NOT allowed to name current members.
Between the February and March meetings, we named Ben "Dover". Yes - it's BenDover. WATCH OUT!
We finally have a permanent nickname for Sherry. From this time forward, Sherry shall be known as "DOUBLE-D". I think it has something to do with the highway leading to the dam. It couldn't be anything else, could it?
NEXT MEETING: TUESDAY APRIL 4TH at 6:30 PM at the Smithville Pizza Shoppe - Hwy. 169 & Amory Road
