It looks there is a website dedicated
to cycling routes. It has elevation, creates turn slips and the rest
of it is just like the GMaps or USAT site. I've been messing with
it and it's pretty slick with a few quirks to figuring out how it all works.
Cool.

The 2006 Sucky Century was a great success with 27 riders attending.
The day was perfect and it seemed like everyone had a great time.
I posted photos to the group site. The new camera didn't focus quite
like I was hoping, but they are still OK photos.
Dr. Dover
Grizz,
Remind me never to let you take photos of any event that I am in.
I love the training wheels on Lamar's bike. The commentary on each
photo was killing me!
Dover
As you recall...our Time Trial Cliffhanger on August 7th left us with the following questions:
1. Can the Badger finish high enough to grab the season title away from Softie?
2. Will Lamar be able to smooth his "wheels" by using a rubbing motion before the next race?
3. Who will triumph when the currently tied Grizz and Lamar duke it out for 3rd place?
4. Can Moonshine keep his single point lead over Dover for 4th?
5. Can Chapstick score 25 more points in one race than DD to claim the women's division?
6. Is Morley Safer?
7. Would Dan Rather?
8. Is Deborah Harry?
9. How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
Questions 1 through 5 were answered at the final time trial for 2006 on August 14th. The rest of them will require some internet research.
This trial was two laps of the Wheeler International Speedway, as decided upon in the August LCC meeting. Moonshine, Unnamed John, Grizz, and Lamar comprised the first group on the road. Badger was a little late because of an appointment in downtown Mission, KS that lasted till 6:00. So he deserved, but didn't receive, extra points for getting to the airport before the first group of riders finished their time trials. In this group, Moonshine blazed a time of 19:43 for two laps in an effort to displace both Grizz and Lamar from their possible podium finishes. But Grizz with a 20:14 finished ahead of Lamar's 20:29 and locked-up third place for the year. John put everything he had into his first-ever time trial and finished with a 24:39.
Now it was time for DD and Badger to crank it up. DD had the women's division all sewn up and was pedaling for pride, but Badger had to finish in 5th or better to squeak past Softie for the season points title. Negative splits served the Badger well, as he cruised to a second place for the night and captured the season points championship.
The category of fastest average speed based on the three fastest trials for the year belongs to Softie, with an average time of 9:00 and speed of 24.33 mph for his three fastest trials. Note that the final two-lap trial was not included in any seasonal average time nor average speed calculations.
The category for most improved is in the hands of the membership. Be prepared to nominate someone (preferably someone who participated in the time trials) and present your reasoning why they should be named "Most Improved"
Everyone liked the two-lap format. It combined raw speed with a little more endurance and a modicum of pace strategy. If we hold the trials at the Wheeler International Speedway again next year, two laps should be the distance.
Greetings from the Free and Independent State of North of the River.
The Lakeside Cycling Club held it's monthly meeting on August 1st and got right down to business - of ordering food and drinks. We eventually got around to club stuff - and heeeeeeeere it is...
Membership - We have two new (dues-paid) club members:
Jim Berger - also known as "Yak" (for those who haven't heard the story of that name - let's just say is came after a hard mountain bike ride on an unsettled stomach).
John Summers - who will need a name. John joins us looking for advice and new cycling experiences as he rides into top shape. He has since ridden with us from the dam on Saturday 8-5.
Treasury
Current accounting is $334, plus the dues from John.
Brochure/Flyer
Dover will be adding the disclaimer to the flyer and making more copies to distribute.
Yahoo Group Site
We have several new people on the site. One was discovered to be in India and looking for donations. This person was removed from the group. Other new people have tended to not include any personal info, so we remain in the dark until or unless they show at rides.
Disclaimer has been added to the home page.
Time Trial results are in an Excel file in the "files" section.
There are a number of new pictures added from several recent races and events.
Ride Schedule
Briefly discussed the fall time change for the Saturday Dam Ride.
We will discuss and decide at what date to change to 8:00 am during the September meeting.
Route Maps
The route for (planned) pre-RAGBRAI century was mapped on the geo-pedometer site and reworked with instructions by Nail and Dover. It's on the group site.
Ride Refreshments
We continue to do well with donations.
Time Trials
Only two trials remaining: 8-7 and 8-14.
The final time trial will be TWO LAPS with the normal points for placements (not double-points), per the vote of the club members.
Review of Prize Categories as decided in the June meeting:
Points Champion - Most total points, no limit on participation.
Fastest Average Speed of a rider's 3 fastest trials.
Most Improved Rider (8-Trial Minimum) based on vote of members.
Prizes
Need to investigate donations or discounts from LBSs.
No actual prizes decided - will see what can be done.
Insurance
Yak (a legal beagle) advised it would be worthwhile.
Need actual quote from the LAB program (Badger)
Need info from similar clubs. Anyone with contacts in other clubs are requested to inquire as to whether they have insurance and the rationale for why or why not.
Club Logo
Calling all would-be artists - submit your ideas NOW.
Club Sponsorship
Looking for ideas or contacts.
Lamar may have a contact with Side Pockets.
Fall Party/Picnic/Awards Ceremony
The Grizzes have volunteered their hacienda for this event.
More details to be discussed at the September meeting.
Officer Elections
Nominations will be considered for the offices of Vice President and Secretary, whose terms are up this year.
Terms are two-years, but there are no limits on the amount of terms.
Vote at the October meeting(?) - so, to avoid being railroaded or Shanghaied, you better be there!
Upcoming Club Events
Sucky Century
Need details of route, time, etc.
Will need to create flyer for distribution with all info VERY SOON (Dover volunteered, but he needs the info).
Lamar's Wiener Ride and Roast
Lamar wasn't present, so this remains an open item.
Moonshine's Parkville Ride
Moonshine suggested a reschedule of the (mostly) rained-out Parkville ride from last July 4th.
Open item to be discussed and scheduled. Possibility of combining this and the Wiener Roast?

Hey I could have done better but Lamar won't let me use
his new time trial bike!
Whats up with that?
DD
It was a tad warm for the time trial this Monday. Even Travis should agree that 104 with a heat index of 120 might be enough to have an effect on the bloodstream. A small group of hearty filleted soles baked out on the pavement.
Lamar showed-up with his new "aerobars" that just happened to come with a free Trek Equinox triathlon bike attached to them. So now we know - it WAS the bike. The rider has NOTHING to do with it.
Yak made it for his second trial and officially joined the club. With that, he is now able to collect TT points towards that all-important Lakeside TT Champion title. The results from 7-10-06 have been revised to show Yak's placement and points as a club member.
One other point to mention - I misplaced the time sheet for this week, but the results listed here should be accurate within a second and will not affect the placements. I will fix any discrepancies when I find that piece of paper. The Excel file is on the group web site.
Here's the conditions this week:
Temp = 104 Heat Index = 120 Sunny Humidity = 47% Wind = S @ 14
Another month has passed us by - and another installment of the lively and fun-filled Lakeside Cycling Club Monthly Meeting was held on July 11th. A wide variety of topics were discussed - some of it even pertained to cycling. Here we go...
Membership
We have several new people subscribed to the web site and join us for rides and time trials.
No actual club memberships were added this past month.
Treasury
We need an current account of the treasury for several proposed expenses.
Brochure/Flyer
A liability disclaimer will be added to this and the web site. Since the meeting Badger proposed a disclaimer that is similar to that used by another cycling club and added it to the group web site.
More copies are needed for distribution to the local bike shops, gyms, etc.
Yahoo group web site
Several new subscribers as noted above.
New pictures, maps, and Time Trial Results have been added.
Since the meeting Badger added the above proposed disclaimer to the group web site.
Ride Schedule
Summer schedule now in effect:
Monday - Time Trial at downtown airport 6:00 pm.
Wednesday - MTB ride at Smokin' Davey trail head 6:30 pm
Saturday - Dam ride at the Smithville Lake Dam parking lot 7:30 am
Saturday - Pre-Dam-Ride-Ride - extra miles at the Dam - 6:30 am
Route Maps
Several route maps are currently listed on the USATF.org site.
This site is used by other clubs and was used by Hammer and Nail to route the Century Ride for July 16th.
The actual need for maps has been questioned, since we generally regroup during rides.
Ride Refreshments
We have been doing well with "donated" drinks and cooler use - most rides have been served this way.
Time Trials
Monday Time Trials have gone well and the complete standings are available on the group site in a Microsoft Excel file.
Only club members who have paid membership dues for 2006 are eligible for prizes.
We will separate the women from the men, but our women competitors still must meet the minimum participation requirements agreed to earlier in the season.
Dover and Chapstick will check with The Wheel and River Market Cyclery, respectively, for possible donations or discounts for Time Trial prizes.
Prizes need to be discussed and decided upon during the August club meeting.
Insurance
This was a major topic of discussion.
The League of American Bicyclists (LAB) has an insurance program that is estimated to cost approximately $130 annually and would cover the club and its members against liability claims arising from any rides or events.
Other insurance policies are projected to cost approximately $300.
The general opinion of the club is to move forward with insurance, but questions remain.
Some clubs similar to LCC do not have insurance because they do not officially sponsor rides requiring fees.
Promoting rides and even putting the club logo on ride and race flyers does not appear to open the club up to liability claims, based upon the actions of a similar club.
More research is needed before the August meeting:
Contact more bicycle clubs to see if they have insurance or considered having insurance. (Badger, Dover, others)
Get legal advice (several members know legal beagles)
Obtain quote from the LAB insurance carrier. (Badger)
Discuss and decide the issue at the August meeting.
New Club Logo - CALLING ALL ARTISTIC PEOPLE
Lamar knows a graphic artist that may be able to make a new logo a reality.
All members are invited to produce sketches, drawings, or performance art for a new Lakeside Cycling Club logo.
The logo may be used on clothing, brochures, etc.
Bring ideas to the August meeting or email through the LCC group web site.
Club Sponsorship
Asking for sponsorship by businesses was discussed.
No definite plans were brought forward.
Upcoming Events:
Hammer and Nail are organizing a Pre-RAGBRAI Century ride this Sunday July 16th in Plattsburg. See the group site for details and route map. The ride starts at 6:00 am at the intersection of Highways 116 & 33.
LAMAR'S WEINER RIDE
Come out to ride, roast and bite Lamar's wieners.
Lamar will host a BBQ after a ride around the northland.
Date and route to be determined.
Sucky Century - Labor Day
No details of the route, yet.
Flyers will be distributed to publicize this free, non-supported ride.
Route will include stops at C-stores for your convenience.

A small group of LCCers plus a guest cranked out some fast times in the Time Trial on July 10th. Jim - who was previously named "Yak" - joined us as an exhibitionist. Jim was decked-out in the old Lakeside Cycling Club logo jersey and had ridden a few times with the "old" LCC. Although Jim doesn't seem to particularly like the "Yak" label, Softie advised him to keep it. You never know what other names could pop up, eh Softie?
On to the trial.
Softie Dan raced to a new track record of 8:51, beating Hammer's old record of 8:58. His record ride moved him ahead of Dover for second place in the season standings. Moonshine scorched the road with his best time of the year and passed DD for 7th place for the season. Badger clung to first overall despite coming in last this week while having his second best time of the year. C'mon guys - give me a break.
As usual, the Time Trial excel file is posted on the Yahoo group site under "files".

Excerpt: TIME TRIALING FOR
NON-RACERS
Challenge! You don't race so you wonder why you should devote
any of your riding time to learning how to go faster. Sure, time-trialing
ability is important for racing in TTs or even for holding off the pack
in a breakaway attempt. But why train to gain solo speed when racing isn't
your thing?
Time trialing isn't just for competition. In fact, it's the racing skill
most often used in non-racing situations. Let's examine when ability against
the clock is important and then look at some tips for going fast on your
own.
---Steady, intense effort is a potent producer of fitness. Even
if you aren't training for competition, riding at 85-90% of your maximum
heart rate once a week for 10-20 minutes will spike your fitness for tours,
centuries and the weekend group ride.
---Time trial speed means safety. Caught 5 miles from home with
a thunderstorm brewing? Time trial to safety before the deluge hits. Suppose
you get a puncture on the homeward commute shortly before dark. The ability
to ride hard and fast will get you there before the sun sets.
---A weekly time trial varies your training. Sure, moderately
paced rides are fun and not too demanding. But a steady diet of cruising
gets monotonous. Schedule a weekly hammerfest and you'll have something
to get excited about.
---Time trialing improves climbing ability. No big climbs nearby
to train on? You can duplicate the power demands of climbing by time trialing
into the wind for 15-30 minutes. Climbing and time trialing are mutually
beneficial -- doing one activity improves your power for the other.
---Time trials are the best way to gauge your fitness. Want to
know if you're improving? You don't need an organized event. Simply mark
off a 5- to 10-mile course on your favorite training roads and time yourself.
Or chart your performance at a local time trial over several months. These
events, often sponsored by a bike shop or cycling club, are fun and social.
Riders of all inclinations show up for an evening of low-key competition.
Nearly perfect temperature, low humidity, and a rather strong north-by-northwest wind greeted the LCC time trialers this week. The wind made the 2 miles on the backstretch feel like 100 Km and the little hill at the NW corner of the course feel like L'Alpe d'Huez. At least we could fly at 25-30 mph down the home stretch.
Five of us - Badger, Richard, Grizz, Dover, and Lamar (in that order) - fought the wind and the wind won. Actually, the times weren't that bad. The top three were fairly close, with only a single second separating Badger and Grizz for 2nd and 3rd.
Just when Dover was breaking out the champagne to celebrate victory, along came Softie. We threatened him with adding 5 minutes to his finishing time for being late, but he quickly concocted a rather lame excuse of being in a "work meeting". Yeah, right. We compromised on not letting him warm-up. That didn't seem to make any difference as he burned a 9:48 for first place.
Don't forget...the current standings spreadsheet will be posted on the group site in the "files" section. It is a Microsoft Excel file. You will also notice a new page on the spreadsheet documenting the conditions.
This week's conditions:
Temp:83 F Partly Cloudy Humidity: 30% Wind: NNW @ 15 gusting to 24
I forgot to mention that, by popular vote at the June LCC meeting, there will be:
NO TIME TRIAL ON JULY 3rd.

On Monday night we had the largest Time Trial turn-out this year, and it was under oppressive 95 degree heat. Eight LCCers raced just like elite track sprinting stars - the hotter the temp - the hotter the race.
The Hammercame down to show everyone up with the first crack of the 9:00 barrier this season. Richard also made his first time trial run.
Badger, Dover, Moonshine, Lamar, and DD all did very well just one day after their 70-mile ride in the Tour de Cure.

FYI if the club joins the League of American Bicyclists ($35) and then buys the
regular club insurance (varies by membership but probably $93 in your case) then
the club members and leadership/organizers/volunteers are covered for any free
event. See info and applications here:
http://www.bikeleague.org/members/club/index.php
If you hold a pay event then there is a separate, additional event insurance
that must be purchase for each pay event. That, too, varies by the number of
participants with a minimum of $93.
But still if you decide to just hold this as a non-pay event then you can get by
for $35 + $93 which is not bad. An additional benefit is that you have this
same coverage for any event the club holds, like weekly rides.
The coverage for members/participants is pretty small, like $2500 per incident.
But leaders/organizers/volunteers are have $1 million liability insurance from
this policy and that is the main reason for getting it.

According to Heather at The Wheel, if you don't charge a registration fee
then there is no liability on the club's part. She was the KCBC
tour director for 2 years so I think she knows what she is talking about.
I'll do some more research on the insurance/ liability issues involved.
We have time.
I like the idea of just guaranteeing
asphalt, convenience stores and a marked route. I think it will have an
appeal for a little different crowd than the usual club century rider.
We wouldn't have to put anything on the flyer as far as club promotion.
It cold just be a ride flyer. If people are riding with us
they will eventually figure out that it is LCC that initiated the ride.
Would we want riders to register for
a head count? I guess if we aren't guaranteeing any sort of SAG there
would be no reason for registration other than a count for some refreshments
at the end.

know any of the legal issues surrounding such and event?

I like the idea of advertising
as much as possible and keeping it based on donations, I hate paying to
ride, donations excepted! Not sure how much liability there would be for
LLC if it was a printed flyer. I would not think it would be any different
than the weekly rides issue. I am up for cooking pancakes again and

Thinking waaayyy ahead for the
Sucky Century. I am trying out the
Database function on the group site. It looks like it will work for a
projected rider count for the event.
I just want to put the concept out of putting up flyers in bike shops
for this event to promote it a bit. Should we make it a free event
with a good will donation for food for a couple of sags or just make
it a ride that just guarantees that there will be riders, gas
stations, and a marked route? Kind of BYOB (bring your own bike and
ride)event with no registration, fees or promises of anything other
than asphalt, but with an official start time, route, and a likely
turnout of more riders than the average weekend club ride.
(Sample) Flyer promotional statement: "Tired of paying fees all summer
long to ride 60 or 100 miles? Come ride the Sucky Century for FREE!
There is a chance it may suck, but what the heck...you and your
riding buddies won't be out any beer money to ride it."
On Monday night six LCCers raced in the best conditions so far in this Time Trial season, and the times showed it. Moonshine trialed for the first time this year and had a great finish. I, the Badger, again had somebody drafting me - in fact, a whole team. I don't know if they can't resist me, or I need to shrink my wind profile.
Other than Dan, who cruised to a LCC Time Trial record time, the race was pretty tight with four riders within 17 seconds, and three within 8 seconds.
And...even though we start riders at 30 second intervals, there was a pack of 3 where 2 (Chapstick and Dan) crossed the line at exactly the same time and another (Grizz) was only a second behind them. As the timer, I thought I made it very clear that riders were supposed to stay at least 10 seconds apart to allow time for me to record finishing times. Also, I think we'll have to review the video to check for any drafting violations. You'd think these triathletes would know the rules, wouldn't you?
This week's conditions:
Temp: 75F Partly Cloudy Humidity: 59% Wind: ENE @ 11
To all the weather-weenies: we did, indeed, have a time trial on June 5th despite the threatening skies. Three brave LCCers pedaled their way around the airport while dodging a few drops, finishing just before lightning struck and the clouds dropped a load. The head wind made the home stretch tough and Badger had an unknown rider drafting him half the way around. Lamar is in a time rut and has the most consistent times for the year - 10:27, 10:28, 10:27.
Here's the results:
This week's conditions:
Temp: 79F Cloudy/Light Rain Wind: SE @ 11 Humidity: 58%
HEY - I'm getting these notes out in the same week as the meeting this time! How about that!
We had another productive meeting, as the Pizza Shoppe is now open till 10:00 just to accommodate us.
Here's just a small portion of what we discussed:
MEMBERSHIP
We welcomed new member Richard Holden into the club. Richard is another in our ever-growing list of triathletes. We may need to add a sub-group for the tri crowd.
Don Treichel (Nail) officially rejoined the club this past month - welcome back!
We still don't have a really good name for Dan Murphy. "Cheater" partially stuck, but even I (who suggested it) don't think it's that good. "Ironman" was suggested a while back, but that's so cliché. I think we need to ask his wife...
TREASURY REPORT
We have a treasury, as meager as it stands right now.
A suggestion was made for an end-of-the-season Party/Award Night/Pub Crawl, etc. More discussion next month.
LCC BROCHURE
The latest version is available on the group site and Ben printed and brought 50 copies to the meeting.
A further revision is needed to add Hammer's Wednesday Mountain Bike Ride - Hammer needs to confirm the details of exactly what to include.
YAHOO GROUP SITE
Several new members have signed-up recently.
Dover assisted some members getting connected.
Badger and Dover will continue to monitor messages and delete the outdated ones.
ROUTE MAPS
Badger is entering routes into the USATF.org database.
Search at www.usatf.org - click on "America's Running Routes" - search under Smithville, Kansas City, or Liberty, Missouri.
Members are invited to add routes on the site - follow the route naming format that has been used to identify rides from the dam.
Badger will create pdf files of the maps and add them to the group site under the "files" section.
RIDE REFRESHMENTS
The idea for the club to purchase coolers has been tabled because several members volunteered their own coolers for use by the club.
Chapstick donated several 6-gallon GatorAde packages, which are being used at time trials.
Lamar has also been able to fill coolers with donated GatorAde for rides.
There are some leftover waters and sodas from the picnic that can be used, too.
SATURDAY DAM RIDES
The time has changed to 7:30 AM as of the start of June.
The fast and slow groups will start at the same time.
Meet in the Dam parking lot on Hwy. DD just east of the dam (NOT the Litton Center lot).
SPECIAL RIDE - SATURDAY JUNE 24th
TIME: 8:00 AM - (to allow anyone at the dam time to get to the meeting spot in Liberty)
MEET at Lewis and Clark Elementary School on Glen Hendren and Nashua Roads.
This is near the I-35/MO-291 interchange - UNDER THE WATER TOWER.
Glen Hendren is the first light south of I-35 on MO-291.
Turn east on Glen Hendren - you will see the back of the school.
Turn right onto the first street - Nashua Drive - park in the school lot near the water tower.
A map will be put onto the yahoo group site.
The ride will (mostly) be in the countryside east of Liberty on (mostly) smooth roads with (mostly) hilly topography and (mostly) very light traffic.
A map will be placed on the group site.
Dover will host a home brew carbo-reload following the ride.
An LCC member (Chapstick) will check the dam parking lot at 7:30 to either lead a short ride from the dam or direct anyone waiting at the dam to the Liberty meeting location (rider's choice).

There has been a slight change in meeting spots. From now on, we meet in the lot right in front of the main terminal of the Wheeler Downtown Airport, near the main airport sign on the outer road. The start line is at the sign.
There will be NO Time Trial on July 3rd.
Total schedule has 12 time trial nights with the last one on August 14th.
Badger has a spreadsheet of results and standings that will be placed on the group site.
Several rules and award categories have been decided upon by the club members:
Points Champion - most total points at the end of the season (NO limit on number of trials).
No limit on the number of trials should encourage participation.
Fastest Average Time/Speed based on the 3 fastest times for each rider.
Most Improved Rider - Minimum of 8 Trials ridden.
"Most Improved" will be a judgment call by the members.
SUCKY CENTURY
A suggestion was made to have the ride on Sunday 9/3 rather than Monday 9/4. More discussion next month.
Flyers will be distributed in places we also distribute the club flyers.
The ride itself will be free, with donations accepted (see below).
Suggestion made to have breakfast (as Hammer and Nail have done in the past) and post-ride carbo/liquid-load and have a donation jar to help with the cost.

Once again I'm late with these notes, but better late than later.
Much of our May meeting concentrated on the club picnic, which was held on Saturday May 13th. So, a lot of my notes are outdated. We had a great turn-out and a good time was had by all. I want to give a specialbig thanks to:
The Yearys - who pretty much set up the whole thing, including shopping for food and supplies, reserving the shelter, and setting up the picnic area.
The Caspers - who donated the delicious burgers.
Dan (no-name) Murphy - who brought his interesting and tasty home brews.
Other items discussed either at or since the meeting:
TIME TRIALS
Begin on May 15th at 6:00 PM at the downtown airport.
Meet at 6:00 PM in the parking lot north of Executive Beechcraft, near the traffic circle.
We have since had two trials - see the weekly TT reports for results.
SATURDAY DAM RIDES
Time is 8:00 AM through the end of May.
Time changes to 7:30 AM on the first Saturday of June (June 3rd)
The fast (18+ mph) and slow (<16 mph) will both start at the same time.
Meet in the FIRST parking lot just east of the dam on Highway DD. (NOT the Litton Center lot)
REFRESHMENTS
Discussed coolers for refreshments
Several liquid and chest-type coolers are available for $10 to $22
We have several members willing to donate the use of coolers, so purchasing one was put on hold.
Chapstick donated a 6-gallon package of GatorAde mix, which is being used at Time Trials.
Leftovers from the picnic should also be used at rides and TTs.
LAKESIDE CLUB BROCHURE
Badger sent the updates and revisions to Dover.
YAHOO GROUP SITE
We have several new members signed-up on the site - WELCOME TO OUR HUMBLE GROUP!!!
New photos have been added - check them out.
Badger and Dover will continue to monitor the messages and delete the outdated ones.

Come join the Hammer & Nail for an early morning Memorial Day spin from Plattsburg. We'll start out at 7:30 from the corner of Highway 116 & 33 (two miles east of Plattsburg) and go either 37 or 50 scenic miles, depending on the make-up and mood of the group that shows up. Should get you all home in plenty of time for memorial day festivities. Ride will conclude with some beverage carbo loading. Hope to see you there, and pass this along to anyone else you think may be interested.....Also will be doing a little longer ride on Sunday if anyone is interested.
LC2 Liberty Area Ride June 24th
Dover has proposed a "special" ride in the Liberty area for June 24th, possibly to Excelsior Springs. More details to come.
This would be our first "special" ride of the year and take the place of the Dam ride for that week.
Tour de Cure / Wheel to Weston - Lakeside Team - Sunday June 18th
The Wheel Cyclery has requested to join our group, which was heartily endorsed by the LC2 members that replied with their opinion.

LC2 Katy Trail Weekend
Shooting for a fall date.
Heritage Park Du and Triathlon
Lamar and Grizz competed in the tri and Badger in the Du.
NEXT MEETING - 6:30 PM TUESDAY JUNE 6th at Smithville Pizza Shoppe
The second week of the Lakeside Time Trial Series saw another good close battle and several painful riders. Lamar, Grizz, and Badger raced in the Heritage Park Tri- and Duathlon on Sunday, and (at least for the eldest participant) Monday was very painful. Dover showed no effects from his 70-mile charity ride on Saturday. The weather conditions were better than last week with no rain and a lighter wind. Lamar exactly matched his time from last week while everyone else improved and DD stayed inflated for the whole lap.
NOTE: THERE WILL BE NO TIME TRIALS ON MEMORIAL DAY !!!
The first installment of the 2006 Lakeside Cycling Club Time Trial Series was held at the downtown airport on Monday 5/15/06. We had a good group of racing enthusiasts that braved a rain shower, wet roads, a pesky northwest wind, and dirty bikes to test their strength against the clock. The course was one lap of the 3.65-mile airport loop from a dead start. The wind caused grief on the far side of the course, but helped the speed down the front stretch to the finish. It was a close race, with four riders within 22 seconds, and five riders within 39 seconds. Double-D flatted (!) less than a mile into her run, reducing her to walking-speed. Here's the finish order, and (since this was the first trial) the season standings:
Conditions:
Temperature = 64F Partly Cloudy Humidity = 63%
Wind = NW @ 12, gusts to 20 Wet Roads
1st Place: Dan (no name): 9:49 avg speed = 22.3 points = 10
A great time was had by all at the First Annual Lakeside Cycling Season Kickoff Ride and Picnic. We had a great turn-out, especially considering that several members had other commitments but still were able to come down to the park to eat, drink, and be merry. We have a great group that I hope will continue to grow as our name gets out there.
I would first like to lead a huge round of thanks and applause to The Yearys for pretty much arranging and executing the whole darn thing (including reserving the site, shopping for food and supplies, and setting up) and The Caspers for making and donating the great burgers we all enjoyed.
There was also some tasty home brew from the Murphy Brewery that many of us sampled. My favorite was the chocolate-mint. Don't knock it till you've tried it. It tasted like mint-chocolate-chip ice cream to me - although Darcie said it tasted like beer. (She's more of a martini-person.)
Not much riding was done - in fact, I think only two of us ventured onto the trails at Smith's Fork Park after soaking in the food and drink all afternoon. I guess that not every cycling club outing necessarily has to include cycling!
We've already have a volunteer to host another grand gala this summer - the Animal House. Just a note - they serve killer chicken (but they don't choke their own).
Well, the Lakeside Cycling Club didn't close the Pizza Shoppe this time, but we covered a lot of business to go along with the eats and drinks. Let's get to it. If I've made any omissions or mistakes, please let me know!
Spring Cycling Season Kick-off Cook-out
IT WILL HAPPEN - SATURDAY MAY 13th at NOON
Currently slated for Sailboat Cove on Smithville Lake
Lamar is checking with his neighborly Park Ranger to determine whether we would have access to picnic areas and/or shelter without the steep rental fee.
Alternatively, The Caspers have volunteered to host us in Casperspace.
LC2 will make a firm announcement about the site shortly.
WE WILL NEED AN RSVP FROM ALL THAT WILL BE ATTENDING THE COOKOUT by the MAY 2nd LC2 meeting.
The Casper's have also donated a hefty portion of cow for burgers.
LC2 will provide condiments, potato salads, burger buns, hot dogs & buns, chips, soda (a.k.a. "pop" to a few of you).
People who are attending please bring a desert or side dish and the alcoholic beverage of your choice, if you choose to imbibe.
Refreshments (Sponsored by LC2)
Lamar has determined that a supply of day-old donuts and Gatorade may be available from QT.
LC2 would need to provide a large Thermos-type of cooler for the GatorAde.
Alternatively, LC2 can provide GatorAde mix or large bottles (whichever is more economical) to fill individual water bottles.
LC2 will also supply some snacks to carry on rides, such as breakfast bars, granola bars, bagels, PowerBars, etc.
Publicity Flyers
The group reviewed the flyers and they (the flyers, not the group) will be slightly revised:
Update the "Summer" and "Winter" time periods as well as the starting times for the "fast" and "slow" paced Saturday rides. See the "Ride Schedule" section below for details.
Revise the wording to reduce the inference that people should use club resources long-term without officially joining or at least considering joining the club.
Flyers have been placed at Maple Woods Fitness Center, Summit Fitness, The Wheel, Cycle City.
These will need to be replaced once the revisions are made.
All members are encouraged to place the flyers in appropriate places, with the proper approval.
Up and running - messages, photos, and a few maps have been added.
Badger will "clean-out" the old, outdated messages on an ongoing basis.
Badger and Dover will again review the old KCCyclist list and invite people to join the new group site.
Anyone needing help in signing up to be a member of the group site should contact Dover or Badger. Note that the site can be viewed without being a member, but only registered group members can post and receive messages, etc.
Ride Schedule
"Summer" will be defined as May to October.
Regularly scheduled Saturday "fast" rides from the dam will start on the first Saturday of May at 8:00 AM. The start time will change to 7:30 on the first Saturday of June. The time will revert back to 8:00 approximately the first of September.
The "slow" Saturday rides will start at 10:00 AM at the dam. This time will remain constant through the summer.
The goal is to have the "fast" and "slow" groups meet at the parking lot between the rides for refreshments and yakking or buffalo-ing.
No other LC2 rides are regularly scheduled at this time except for Monday Time Trials.
Members are encouraged to organize rides during the week via the group site email.
KCBC has some new rides in the Northland. Check their website: www.kcbc.org
Ride Maps
Badger is working on this and will load them on the group site as they are completed. Dover may need to assist in adding notes to the pdf versions.
Time Trials
Time Trials will begin on Monday May 15th at 6:00 PM at the downtown airport.
Meet and park in the lot just north of Executive Beechcraft near the traffic circle.
Trials are one lap of the airport loop.
The actual starting spot will be on the west side of the loop to avoid traffic in the start/finish area.
Points system will be similar to previous years, but additional award categories are being planned.
Ride Events and Races
Tour de Cure Wheel to Weston Team - Lakeside Cycling Club Presented by Toyota
After some confusion, it appears that we do have Toyota sponsorship for 7 riders' $15 entry fee and also a donation towards Dover's fund raising goal.
Riders are responsible for their own fund raising to meet their personal goal.
Dover has a vehicle to transport about 6 riders back from Weston.
Dover will be getting Toyota shirts for team members - give him your size.
Heritage Park Bike Source Duathlon/Triathlon
Badger will compete in the Du, while Lamar and Grizzly will compete in the Tri.
There seems to be a wager (friendly or otherwise) between Grizz and Lamar - stay tuned.
RAGBRAI
Hammer and Cricket are definitely going for the entire ride. Dover for the final half.
You probably all saw this, but it didn't get through on the Yahoo group mail the first time, so here I try again...
-----Original Message----- From: Krupinski, Keith Sent: Friday, March 24, 2006 3:31 PM To: 'Lakeside Cycling Club'; 'LakesideCycling@yahoogroups.com' Cc: dmurphy1@...; mike@... Subject: Lakeside Cycling Club March Meeting Notes
Our crowd once again closed the Pizza Shoppe for the 5th consecutive time after a meeting featuring lively banter, some deadly banter, food, drink, and a huge decision about Sherry's name. With so much to cover - I'd better get to it...
Membership news:
A star from LC2 history - Hammer - has been added to the official list of members.
Publicity Flyers are now complete, many thanks to Ben (Dover) and our unofficial committee - the Flying Circus.
Dover emailed the file to the membership and everyone is welcomed - and encouraged - to distribute them in suitable places such as: bike shops, fitness centers, sporting goods stores, etc. So, if you frequent just such a place, please leave a stack of flyers (after receiving approval from the management, of course). Another copy is attached.
CLUB DISCOUNTS are now available at the following bike shops: The Wheel, Cycle City, and (new) The Trek Store. Many thanks to Moonshine for securing the discounts at Cycle City and the Trek Store. Moonshine is also planning to check with River Market Cyclery.
Most members are already logged into the site, but those that are not can do so on their own by following the link above.
Messages, Calendars, and Pictures can be posted on the site.
Badger added our link to the KCBC site.
Club Treasury:
The club paid for a floral tribute to Marty Issacson (wife of former member Dale-Gearboy-Issacson), who passed away.
We are still at a standstill as far as retrieving the pre-2005 club funds - not for the lack of trying. Previous (not current) club members will not release the funds to the current officers for unknown reasons.
Plans for the use of the treasury include: supplies for the Spring Cycling Season Kick-off Cook-out and ride, refreshments for club members before, after and during rides, and the various incidental items that a club requires.
E-MAIL LIST
With the introduction of the new Yahoo group for the club, the old KCCYCLIST.COM email list will no longer be maintained. This is the FINAL communication that will be made by the club via KCCYCLIST.COM. ALL FUTURE COMMUNICATION WILL BE DONE VIA THE YAHOO GROUP LIST ACCESSED FROM THE LINK ABOVE.
PLEASE NOTE: All former members who have not paid club dues will be dropped from the list. This time we WILL FOLLOW THROUGH with the threat!
Spring Cycling Season Kick-off Cook-Out and Ride
Finally, we've set a date for this major event: SATURDAY MAY 13TH 2006 at SAILBOAT COVE on SMITHVILLE LAKE at HIGH NOON.
LC2 will provide some supplies. Exact items will be determined at the April meeting.
The club will not be able to furnish beer or other alcoholic beverages. We will check to see if they are allowed in the park. If so, individuals would be allowed to BYOB.
Trail rides can be either before or after the cook-out lunch.
More details will be determined at the April meeting.
Route Maps and Pace Groups
Badger showed several examples of route maps constructed from the USATF.org website. One version was straight off the web site, another was first cropped and then put into pdf format. We decided to go with the pdf format, which allows us to add notes and labels to the maps (those of us with Adobe Acrobat software, anyway). We can also place the pdf maps on the LC2 group web site and email them to members.
Both the fast and slow pace groups will start from the dam parking lot on Saturdays. The slow group may start at a slightly later time, however. The routes will be predetermined so that both groups will return to the dam lot at about the same dam time. We can then share the dam refreshments between the dam groups.
Steve (Lamar) brought maps of the Smithville Lake trails and area from Clay County. More copies are available.
Wheel to Weston Team
Dover has secured 7 sponsorships from Toyota for riders that are Lakeside Cycling Club members. Sponsorship includes the $15 entry into the ride. We currently do not know exactly how the ride entries will be paid.
Riders will be responsible for their own contributions to their individual fundraising goal.
Other Rides and Races
Badger will be racing in the Heritage Park Bikesource Duathlon on May 21st. Let's get more club members out there.
KC Bike & Foot Chase at Zona Rosa June 11th - 5K run OR 50-mile OR 20-mile bike ride http://www.kcphs.org/3.html
Note that the Broadway Bridge Run is being resurrected this year and will be held on April 23rd.
LC2 KATY TRAIL WEEKEND - future planning for a summer weekend either camping or B&B.
RAGRAI - Several club members are planning on traveling to Iowa for this tour across Iowa.
Ride to the Beach - the MS150 from San Antonio to Corpus Christi, TX Lamar & Double-D have some info.
Nicknames
In response to a former member's email, the membership resolved that non-members are NOT allowed to name current members.
Between the February and March meetings, we named Ben "Dover". Yes - it's BenDover. WATCH OUT!
We finally have a permanent nickname for Sherry. From this time forward, Sherry shall be known as "DOUBLE-D". I think it has something to do with the highway leading to the dam. It couldn't be anything else, could it?
NEXT MEETING: TUESDAY APRIL 4TH at 6:30 PM at the Smithville Pizza Shoppe - Hwy. 169 & Amory Road
