That location is on the way for me.  Kind of.  Definitely more than the airport.

If you're not starting until 6:00 or so it isn't too bad............sounds like a good route, not to far off for anyone.

The route I mentioned starts just north of 92 Hwy at B & Hover Road.
Ride west on Hover Road for roughly .8 miles
Turn right on Interurban for roughly .9 miles
Turn right on Winnon Rod for roughly 2.3 miles of hills
Turn right on B for roughly 1.8 miles back to Hover.
Total distance 5.8'ish miles

This course would have a lot of climbing. The right hand turn onto B
is pretty tight and has fairly limited line of sight.

There are no loop courses that don't include a gravel road or crossing or traveling on a busy road such as Barry or Hwy 152, plus there are the concerns about stop signs. Very few of the roads in that area go through because of the airport, I-435, and that it's relatively undeveloped. It's too bad because Tiffany Springs Park could make a good starting point and there are certainly some good climbs around there.

We are still considering alternatives to discuss at the April meeting.  However, unless an excellent alternative can be found, scouted, and decided upon by the April meeting, we will continue at the downtown airport.  If anyone has routes to try, let's set-up a ride to check them out before the April meeting.  That gives everyone about a week to make proposals.

On a different subject, are we still looking for a new TT route?  Does anyone know of anything around KCI or in some of the undeveloped land south and southwest of the airport between it and the Tiffany Springs area?

I know this should be a great ride, but the Heritage Park Du and Tri are also that weekend, so I'm afraid that several of us part-time runners and swimmers will have to take the 19th off to carbo-load on unfiltered wheat.  I do (du?) hope that everyone else can make it to Liberty.

Lakeside Cyclists,

This is a great ride.  Chapstick, Moonshine, Moonshine's Nephew, and a couple of others rode this last year and it was a great ride.  They have a 30 or 70 mile route that goes up to Excelsior Springs and farther north east for the 70 mile route.  For $30 it is not a bad gig.  Proceeds benefit the Greater KC MS Society.  Last year they had burgers and drinks after the ride.  This coincides with a festival that Liberty has downtown as well.

Let's get a group together to ride this thing!

It's time! Another year has flown by! The 5th Annual Greater Liberty Ride for MS is now open for online registration.  The event is scheduled for 05/19/07, so mark your calendar and register today at:

My Fellow Trialists:
Upon further review, I found that the downtown airport loop road surface was not as bad as anticipated.  There was some dirt and sand from winter, but overall, the road surface is much the same as last year.  However, there are two sets of barricades on the northwest end that are a little spooky to ride through at full speed (think of the movie "Vanishing Point"), but some practice (and perhaps a little manpower to slide the barricades over a couple of feet) would put minds at some ease.  The question is: what are the barricades doing there in the first place?  They have been up since January with no work being done, and the road is in good condition in that area.  Hopefully, we will know more before TT season.

Grizz and I toured 3 of my proposed alternate TT courses on Sunday.  They were not bad, and added some killer hills in the mix, but also the obstacles of stop signs and more traffic, particularly cross-traffic at intersections.  I see the traffic on these courses as more of a danger than the barricades at the airport.  Overall, I think the airport is much safer than any other open road course we could find (despite my almost being caught under the wheels of a jet fuel tanker truck that pulled straight across the road directly in front of me without looking).

Doing the 21 on the "off weeks" might be a good idea. We could also run it like
the "pedal til you puke" rides instead of a strict TT format.

I think it is a viable option for at least a couple of the events. I
think that it would be a good test during the year. I don't see a problem
having the course change a few times. It is a great loop up there.

The timing could work fine with Softie's idea.

I think we should give it a go.

Getting serious, folks:
Me thinks we gotta keep it within the "normal" metro area to attract more
riders and also keep it to a length that is easy to time and still make
those meetings that fall on TT nights. The "pedal-till-you-puke" route
should be a separate night. Maybe Mondays for those of you that want a
warm-up for TTs on Tuesdays (heh heh heh). Actually, the opposite
Tuesdays from the TTs would be good, except for any nights interfering
with meetings.

A 21 Mile TT sounds great to me!

Most Triathlons and Duathlons are 12-15 miles so they'd seem easy
after a 12 weeks of 21's! I also vote we encourage every fast rider
we can find. I say raise the bar, then of course, hit the bar.

Members Present: Keith / Badger, Sherry / DD, Steve / Lamar, Jim / Cricket, Mike / Griz, Berna Sue / Wendy, Ben / Dover, Richard / Timex and

Greg /Moonshine.

New Prospects:  Jeff Schreiner / ?? TBD

Blast from the Past:  Dawn Gallegos / Wild Hare

Membership Renewals / New Members:

Jim / Cricket   (three witnesses saw Jim hand his dues to Lamar)

Membership cards:

Ben distributed membership cards to several members. For those who didn't get theirs,   ppppllllllhhhhbbbbb!   No seriously, better luck next month!  Ben said he'd get the rest of the cards out to members. Really.

Treasury report:

The recount was done and the Treasure said $495.

That figure immediately dropped to $454 when we voted to join the Missouri Bike Federation for $50.00 a year.  Adding Crickets dues back in, and we're back up around $475.  Whew, the stock exchange doesn't move that fast!

Bike Schedule - Spring Rides

We discussed a 10am Sunday ride from Maple Woods by fitness center off Hwy 152 and Route 1.  First street on the right,  parking lot on the right.  Keep checking Yahoo postings & Email as the weather might change those plans for us.

Wednesday night mountain bike rides have been out lately due to muddy conditions.

Flyers:

Ben printed a bunch.  We folded a bunch.
We talked about creating a special flyer for the Spring Semi-Sucky 50 miler.

Club Logo:

No updates but talked about using it for Teeshirts or something. Ben's going to have the artist put the final(??) touches on the latest version.

CLUB SPONSORSHIP:

No updates

CLUB Jerseys:

No updates

Insurance:

We're putting this idea on hold until we get more members, or until we decide to sponsor a ride.

Constitution & Bylaws:

No updates.

Time Trials for 2007:  Whew, lots of action here.  The roads around the airport

did not fair well over the winter. They are doable, but we're also looking at other choices.

Check the other postings on this website for the proposed routes

Post your own suggestions as well and lets keep the discussions friendly!!

The suggested criteria for suggestions include:

Course needs to be as safe as possible.

Can't have Stop LIGHTS.

Minimal Cross streets, intersections, and traffic

This isn't NASCAR, Right Turns would probably keep things safer for us.

Distance is open, but should be at least 6 miles based on our previous plans to do a double loop at the airport.

Check this website for details and scheduled rides to check out proposed courses.

The TT's will still start on May 1st, we just don't know where.

Races will be Every Other Tuesday, 6pm.

We'll have a total of 12 trials, but points will be only be counted on each person's first 10 races.

Currently the following points are awarded for each trial:

            1st place = 10 pts., 2nd = 9 pts., 3rd = 8 pts. etc.

Questions we need to answer:

            WHERE??  How Long?

Is the current point system still okay?

How to handle male & female categories?

            Season prize category possibilities:

                        Points Champ

Fastest average time/speed for entire season

                        Fastest time/speed single night

Fastest time/speed for average of 3 fastest trials for each rider

                        Most improved

PRIZES!  Keith feels we need TWICE as big of prizes for 2007.

(no one got a prize for last year, at least not yet)

We are still looking for Timing system proposals!

Timing, or actually timers, become a much bigger issue the longer the course gets.

Upcoming events:

Sucky half century,or the Semi-Sucky around the 2nd or 3rd week of April.

A proposal was made to ride from Gower and do a few hills.

Suggestions for scheduling and locations in afternoons or on Sundays so as not to interfere with dam rides.

Liberty area

Wyandotte Co. Lake Park

Parkville

Urban Assault

Platte City

KCI

OPEN Discussion

Next months meeting is at Pizza Factory at 87th and North Oak!

** Cricket wondered if there were any opportunities to volunteer on the Tour of Missouri. Several people expressed interest in watching it. If anyone has details on that please let us know!**

FIMQ (Foot In Mouth Quote) of the meeting:

Steve again:  Steve said he gave his wiener away a thousand times.

We said:  Well, actually we were split on this. Some said, "YOU WISH!"  Others said, "Poor Sherry!"

This concludes the Lakeside Meeting Notes for  March 6, 2007.  Thanks for reading along.

Those could be "special" events, for my reasons below.  If we want to attract as many riders as possible week in and week out, we have to be closer to KC.

As far as using several routes for regular TTs, let me say this: it makes valid comparisons of times/speeds impossible, and thereby invalidates the point system.  Not everyone will be riding the same amount of TTs on each course.  Hardly anyone rode the same amount of TTs on the unchanging courses of previous years.  Give the statistician (me) a break!  Let's choose one good, challenging, and safe course of reasonable length (5 to 8 miles) in the KC Northland/Smithville area and stick with it.

I think it is a viable option for at least a couple of the events.  I think that it would be a good test during the year.  I don't see a problem having the course change a few times.  It is a great loop up there.

The timing could work fine with Softie's idea.

I think we should give it a go.

Getting serious, folks:

Me thinks we gotta keep it within the "normal" metro area to attract more riders and also keep it to a length that is easy to time and still make those meetings that fall on TT nights.  The "pedal-till-you-puke" route should be a separate night.  Maybe Mondays for those of you that want a warm-up for TTs on Tuesdays (heh heh heh).  Actually, the opposite Tuesdays from the TTs would be good, except for any nights interfering with meetings.

A 21 Mile TT sounds great to me!

Most Triathlons and Duathlons are 12-15 miles so they'd seem easy
after a 12 weeks of 21's! I also vote we encourage every fast rider
we can find. I say raise the bar, then of course, hit the bar.

21 is fine with me but who's going to sit around for 1+ hour to time everyone?  Perhaps put a fast rider with a watch first, give him a 5 minute head start and/or let slower riders go next so he won't get caught and then let him finish, jump off his bike, and time everyone else coming in?  Should be fun at least once!

I will set up as many Bars as you want, I know a lot of the folks along the way and to set up a bar every few miles would not be a problem. Part of the rules of the TT will be you have to consume XX number of drinks or there will be a time penalty!!

We could toss the stop watch and use a calendar instead!

What's that about getting ripped in the last 8 miles?  Are there a lot of bars along the route?

I thought about the P-burg 21 mile loop....that would be what? A 34k TT? Just like the pros! And on the last 8 miles you can really rip it.

Out and back on Interurban or do a loop with killer climbs on farmers
lane, H highway and interurban. Come to p burg and do the pedal till you
puke loop, 21 miles, a real TT

The airport is looking sketchy for this year. Lamar and Grizz rode it
yesterday and it has some nasty bumps and asphalt issues apparently.
Most likely it will not be a good spot this year. It had some rough
spots last year, but it has deteriorated apparently. Probably trying to
keep those darn cyclists and runners from slowing down all of the
traffic out there. They are such a nuisance!

Grizz was talking about a route off of 92 that we was going to map out.
The more options the better.

To All You Racers:

Concerning the proposal to change TT routes this year, I encourage
anyone and everyone to try to identify a route or two for consideration.
We can arrange email rides to try them out and decide on one at the
April meeting. I have reservations concerning traffic and turns on any
open road course . Riding a time trial would presume not stopping,
though there are stop signs on most or all of the road courses we could
imagine. Cross-traffic is also a concern at all intersections. These
are not concerns at the airport, which would be a big advantage of
staying there. So, I also encourage everyone to remember safety when
plotting courses and when the time comes to decide on one.

After having said all that, I have identified several possible routes.

The first is 5 miles. The traffic is not too bad in the evening except
for near the baseball fields on 100th Street, though the speed limit
there is 25. It has many hills and no real flat sections. The surfaces
are in pretty decent shape. I think the parking lot is gravel, though.
I've ridden the roads there many times, though not as a time trial
circuit. I suspect that 5 miles all out around this course would have
our tongues dragging on the ground!

- Start at Platte Purchase Park (at about Platte Purchase Road and 104th
Street)
- South on Platte Purchase to NW 100th Street
- West on NW 100th Street to Green Hills Road
- North on Green Hills Road to NW 108th Street
- East on NW 108th Street to Platte Purchase Road
- South on Platte Purchase and return to the park.
----------------------
Here's one with great parking (a school) and a good variety of hills and
flats. The road surfaces are good and the traffic is decent for the
most part. It's only 4 miles, but a hefty climb makes up for the
shortness. We could always do two laps, if we dare.

- Start at Northview school at NE 92nd Street and Indiana Road
- West on 92nd to Indiana
- North on Indiana to 100th Street
- East on 100th Street to Staley Road
- Southeast on Staley to Brighton Road
- South on Brighton to 92nd Street (steep climb)
- West on 92nd back to the school
---------------------
Here's another shorty (3 miles) in that same neighborhood that would
require two laps. The roads are good and most are empty. There are
some good hills in it, too. The intersection of Barry & Brighton is a
4-way stop. Parking is on the street on the old Barry Road bridge over
I-435.

- Start at Sam Ray Road and Barry (old Barry Road bridge over I-435)
- South on Sam Ray to Barry Road
- West on Barry to Brighton
- North on Brighton to 92nd
- East on 92nd to Sam Ray
- South on Sam Ray to Barry Road bridge

------------------------
The next route is 6 miles. It starts with a flat first mile, a huge
downhill, a long climb followed by a long drop, and finishes with a
couple miles of brutal hills. The road surfaces range from very good
asphalt to chip and seal, but are OK over all. The most tricky part of
the route would be turning right from 144th onto Mt. Olivet. The only
parking is on a gravel road (136th west of Virginia) or in Animal's
driveway. Animal would like this one because it's right outside his
door. Again, the hills will have you sucking air (or just sucking)!

- Start at 136th & Virginia
- North on Virginia to 144th Street
- East on 144th Street to Mt. Olivet Road
- South on Mt. Olivet to 136th Street
- West on 136th to Virginia
----------------------
The next is 6.15 miles long with mostly gradual hills and flats in
Dover's back yard. There is a rough chip and seal surface for about 1.5
miles on 132nd Street, but the rest of the roads are decent. Parking
would be on the street in a new subdivision at 120th and Sherman Road.

- Start at NE 120th and Sherman Road
- North on Sherman to 132nd Street
- East on 132nd to Eastern Road
- South on Eastern to 120th Street
- West on 120th Street to Sherman Road
------------------
See you out there.

the route would be turning right from 144th onto Mt. Olivet. The only
parking is on a gravel road (136th west of Virginia) or in Animal's
driveway. Animal would like this one because it's right outside his
door. Again, the hills will have you sucking air (or just sucking)!

- Start at 136th & Virginia
- North on Virginia to 144th Street
- East on 144th Street to Mt. Olivet Road
- South on Mt. Olivet to 136th Street
- West on 136th to Virginia
----------------------
The next is 6.15 miles long with mostly gradual hills and flats in
Dover's back yard. There is a rough chip and seal surface for about 1.5
miles on 132nd Street, but the rest of the roads are decent. Parking
would be on the street in a new subdivision at 120th and Sherman Road.

- Start at NE 120th and Sherman Road
- North on Sherman to 132nd Street
- East on 132nd to Eastern Road
- South on Eastern to 120th Street
- West on 120th Street to Sherman Road
------------------
See you out there.

Subject: [LakesideCycling] Time Trial Routes for 2007

Subject: [LakesideCycling] Time Trial Routes for 2007

Let's help MOBikeFed on this one. Although it's not in our immediate
neighborhood, it's typical of MoDot's thinking and getting them to add
bike accommodations there may set the stage for bike lanes on new
northland roads, too. So - get typing...

Keith-

If you could spend 2 minutes sending an email to MoDOT, encouraging them
to include good on-road bicycle accommodations on a major road widening
project, I would appreciate it.

There is a very short fuse on this (only now until Friday) and to make
an impression on this issue we are going to need a LOT of responses
quickly--at least 100 and preferably over 200:

  http://mobikefed.org/Route150

The issue is this:

MoDOT is widening Hwy 150 from Grandview to Lee's Summit. This is just
south of the Longview Lake area.

Hwy 150 will become a 4-lane road with 11-foot lanes, no shoulder.

We have talked and talked with MoDOT about including on-street bicycle
facilities.

In the end they had a "budget crunch" and the on-street bicycle
facilities will be omitted.

Instead, they will apply for Enhancements funds to build a "trail"
alongside the road on one side. Also they want to post "share the road"
signs for on-road bicyclists, who they know will, by the design of the
project, be using the full right-hand lane.

Not coincidentally, the Enhancements funds available will not even be
enough to complete the entire "trail" (3 communities, each can apply for
$500,000 in Enhancements funding--that's not enough to pave the entire
trail).

Each end of the project is already built up--neighborhoods, commercial
areas, etc. Within a few decades they are projecting complete infill. So
this will essentially become another urban arterial. And ANOTHER urban
arterial in KC with no bicycle
accommodations:

  http://mobikefed.org/Route150

One reason thing we are letting MoDOT know how we feel about this
project, is there are several others around the region and around the
state that are in a similar situation-- for instance, the upcoming Hwy
45 project.

We would like to work towards the time when MoDOT automatically includes
good bicycle accommodations on ALL projects--wherever they are built.
They won't start doing this unless citizens start asking for it:

  http://mobikefed.org/Route150

If you enjoy commuting on Bannister, College Blvd, 63rd Street,
Independence Ave., North Oak Trafficway, and similar multi-lane busy
roads in the metro area--that's what 150 Hwy will become. Just another
of our typical high-speed, high-traffic major streets with no particular
on-road bicycle accommodation.

Incidentally they haven't thought at all about how to deal with
intersections/traffic signals on the bicycle 'trail'/sidepath and didn't
even realize it was an issue.

Again, there is a short fuse on this--they are only accepting comments
to be part of their official record of the recent public meeting until
Friday, March 10th.

  http://mobikefed.org/Route150

Thank you! Letting MoDOT know how you feel about these projects really
*does* make a difference.

The airport is looking sketchy for this year.  Lamar and Grizz rode it yesterday and it has some nasty bumps and asphalt issues apparently.  Most likely it will not be a good spot this year.  It had some rough spots last year, but it has deteriorated apparently.  Probably trying to keep those darn cyclists and runners from slowing down all of the traffic out there.  They are such a nuisance!

Grizz was talking about a route off of 92 that we was going to map out.  The more options the better.

The airport is out for me.........too far from work or home.   I know you need to go with location that is best for the majority, but the further north you go, the more interested I'd be in participating.

[LakesideCycling] Time Trial Routes for 2007

To All You Racers:

Concerning the proposal to change TT routes this year, I encourage anyone and everyone to try to identify a route or two for consideration.  We can arrange email rides to try them out and decide on one at the April meeting.  I have reservations concerning traffic and turns on any open road course .  Riding a time trial would presume not stopping, though there are stop signs on most or all of the road courses we could imagine.  Cross-traffic is also a concern at all intersections.  These are not concerns at the airport, which would be a big advantage of staying there.  So, I also encourage everyone to remember safety when plotting courses and when the time comes to decide on one.

After having said all that, I have identified several possible routes.

The first is 5 miles. The traffic is not too bad in the evening except for near the baseball fields on 100th Street, though the speed limit there is 25.  It has many hills and no real flat sections.  The surfaces are in pretty decent shape.  I think the parking lot is gravel, though.  I've ridden the roads there many times, though not as a time trial circuit.  I suspect that 5 miles all out around this course would have our tongues dragging on the ground!

- Start at Platte Purchase Park (at about Platte Purchase Road and 104th Street)
- South on Platte Purchase to NW 100th Street
- West on NW 100th Street to Green Hills Road
- North on Green Hills Road to NW 108th Street
- East on NW 108th Street to Platte Purchase Road
- South on Platte Purchase and return to the park.
----------------------
Here's one with great parking (a school) and a good variety of hills and flats.  The road surfaces are good and the traffic is decent for the most part.  It's only 4 miles, but a hefty climb makes up for the shortness.  We could always do two laps, if we dare.

- Start at Northview school at NE 92nd Street and Indiana Road
- West on 92nd to Indiana
- North on Indiana to 100th Street
- East on 100th Street to Staley Road
- Southeast on Staley to Brighton Road
- South on Brighton to 92nd Street (steep climb)
- West on 92nd back to the school
---------------------
Here's another shorty (3 miles) in that same neighborhood that would require two laps.  The roads are good and most are empty.  There are some good hills in it, too.  The intersection of Barry & Brighton is a 4-way stop.  Parking is on the street on the old Barry Road bridge over I-435.

- Start at Sam Ray Road and Barry (old Barry Road bridge over I-435)
- South on Sam Ray to Barry Road
- West on Barry to Brighton
- North on Brighton to 92nd
- East on 92nd to Sam Ray
- South on Sam Ray to Barry Road bridge

------------------------
The next route is 6 miles.  It starts with a flat first mile, a huge downhill, a long climb followed by a long drop, and finishes with a couple miles of brutal hills.  The road surfaces range from very good asphalt to chip and seal, but are OK over all.  The most tricky part of the route would be turning right from 144th onto Mt. Olivet.  The only parking is on a gravel road (136th west of Virginia) or in Animal's driveway.  Animal would like this one because it's right outside his door.  Again, the hills will have you sucking air (or just sucking)!

- Start at 136th & Virginia
- North on Virginia to 144th Street
- East on 144th Street to Mt. Olivet Road
- South on Mt. Olivet to 136th Street
- West on 136th to Virginia
----------------------

This not related to Time trials but wanted to drop a note about myself, Mike
casper and Steve Yeary. As you have probably read we had to pull out of the
Brew to Brew run do to a date change for a Triathlon we are signed up for in
Ft Worth Tx. Hope it did not mess up anything with you and your daughter. We
wernt thrilled with the change but did not have any choice.
