LCC July Meeting Notes   Message List

Another month has passed us by - and another installment of the lively and fun-filled Lakeside Cycling Club Monthly Meeting was held on July 11th.  A wide variety of topics were discussed - some of it even pertained to cycling.  Here we go...
  • Membership
    • We have several new people subscribed to the web site and join us for rides and time trials.
    • No actual club memberships were added this past month.
  • Treasury
    • We need an current account of the treasury for several proposed expenses.
  • Brochure/Flyer
    • A liability disclaimer will be added to this and the web site.  Since the meeting Badger proposed a disclaimer that is similar to that used by another cycling club and added it to the group web site.
    • More copies are needed for distribution to the local bike shops, gyms, etc.
  • Yahoo group web site
    • Several new subscribers as noted above.
    • New pictures, maps, and Time Trial Results have been added.
    • Since the meeting Badger added the above proposed disclaimer to the group web site.
  • Ride Schedule
    • Summer schedule now in effect:
      • Monday - Time Trial at downtown airport 6:00 pm.
      • Wednesday - MTB ride at Smokin' Davey trail head 6:30 pm
      • Saturday - Dam ride at the Smithville Lake Dam parking lot 7:30 am
      • Saturday - Pre-Dam-Ride-Ride - extra miles at the Dam - 6:30 am
  • Route Maps
    • Several route maps are currently listed on the USATF.org site.
    • A different site allowing direct links will be tried: www.gmap-pedometer.com
    • This site is used by other clubs and was used by Hammer and Nail to route the Century Ride for July 16th.
    • The actual need for maps has been questioned, since we generally regroup during rides.
  • Ride Refreshments
    • We have been doing well with "donated" drinks and cooler use - most rides have been served this way.
  • Time Trials
    • Monday Time Trials have gone well and the complete standings are available on the group site in a Microsoft Excel file.
    • Only club members who have paid membership dues for 2006 are eligible for prizes.
    • We will separate the women from the men, but our women competitors still must meet the minimum participation requirements agreed to earlier in the season.
    • Dover and Chapstick will check with The Wheel and River Market Cyclery, respectively, for possible donations or discounts for Time Trial prizes.
    • Prizes need to be discussed and decided upon during the August club meeting.
  • Insurance
    • This was a major topic of discussion.
    • The League of American Bicyclists (LAB) has an insurance program that is estimated to cost approximately $130 annually and would cover the club and its members against liability claims arising from any rides or events.
    • Other insurance policies are projected to cost approximately $300.
    • The general opinion of the club is to move forward with insurance, but questions remain.
    • Some clubs similar to LCC do not have insurance because they do not officially sponsor rides requiring fees.
    • Promoting rides and even putting the club logo on ride and race flyers does not appear to open the club up to liability claims, based upon the actions of a similar club.
    • More research is needed before the August meeting:
      • Contact more bicycle clubs to see if they have insurance or considered having insurance. (Badger, Dover, others)
      • Get legal advice (several members know legal beagles)
      • Obtain quote from the LAB insurance carrier. (Badger)
      • Discuss and decide the issue at the August meeting.
  • New Club Logo - CALLING ALL ARTISTIC PEOPLE
    • Lamar knows a graphic artist that may be able to make a new logo a reality.
    • All members are invited to produce sketches, drawings, or performance art for a new Lakeside Cycling Club logo.
    • The logo may be used on clothing, brochures, etc.
    • Bring ideas to the August meeting or email through the LCC group web site.
  • Club Sponsorship
    • Asking for sponsorship by businesses was discussed.
    • No definite plans were brought forward.
  • Upcoming Events:
    • Hammer and Nail are organizing a Pre-RAGBRAI Century ride this Sunday July 16th in Plattsburg.  See the group site for details and route map.  The ride starts at 6:00 am at the intersection of Highways 116 & 33.
    • LAMAR'S WEINER RIDE
      • Come out to ride, roast and bite Lamar's wieners.
      • Lamar will host a BBQ after a ride around the northland.
      • Date and route to be determined.
    • Sucky Century - Labor Day
      • No details of the route, yet.
      • Flyers will be distributed to publicize this free, non-supported ride.
      • Route will include stops at C-stores for your convenience.
    • Other Local or Non-Local Events
      • Prairie Punisher Du in Gardner, KS - July 29th
      • Smithville Challenge Adventure Race - July 30
      • Rose Brooks Challenge Women's Triathlon in Smithville - August 12
      • Du-State-Du in Loud Thunder Preserve, near Andalusia, IL - August 20 www.qcbc.org
      • Jackson County Tri- and Duathlon - August 27
      • Midwest Meltdown Tri- and Duathlons - September 10  www.midwestmultisportraces.com
      • Octaginta - Sept. 30 & Oct. 1  -  http://www.nvo.com/lbc/door/
  • Other Discussion Items
    • Lamar asked whether there is interest in club members purchasing Brigade Football Tickets ($72 per season) and tailgating before games.
    • Badger suggested a club outing to Sadler's Indoor Racing - an indoor high-powered go-kart track.
      • "It's Awesome - They get up to about 60 mph. I averaged 43 on the tight road course layout." - Badger
  • Any Questions, Comments, or Snide Remarks? - TOO BAD
