Head Injuries in Soccer Players
Helmets Save Lives and IQ points

Gabe Mirkin, M.D.

A very disturbing study from the Netherlands showed that soccer players have lower scores in tests measuring intelligence than middle-distance runners and swimmers. The authors feel that head injuries are the likely cause.

Twenty-seven percent of soccer players have had a documented concussion with passing out and 22 percent had had between two and five concussions. The amount of drop in mental skills was associated with the number of concussions.

When you hit a ball with your head, you can expect brain damage. Soccer players, cyclists, skateboarders and athletes in any other sport with high risk of head injuries should always wear helmets.

Your brain bounces around in its sack of fluid, hitting one side of your skull and then the other, causing bruising and bleeding. Woodpeckers don't suffer concussions when they bang their heads because their brains don't bounce around. Wearing a helmet protects your brain only if it prevents your head from moving inside the helmet when it is hit. Helmets are supposed to fit your head the same way that a woodpecker's skull hold its brain solidly in place. Soccer players should wear helmets that fit snugly, with a liner that fits tightly around the head and a chin strap. If you can move the helmet when you hold your head still, it doesn't fit.

Hi all,

Our track/field booster club is sponsoring a race in the spring: Brave the Race.
I think some of you have run it in the past. We offer half-marathon and 5K
options.

I was thinking that it would be better to abandon the half-marathon option in
favor of a 10K because the 10K would be easier to manage. Plus, people running
a 10K expect less swag than for a half-marathon. Also, I like the 10K option
because I don't know of many 10K's in the area and that might help draw more
runners.

Which race distance would you choose to offer if you had a choice: 10K or
half-marathon?

Thanks,

-Christian

Thanks.

Plus, I think the 10K would draw more people because most runners could probably run that distance, whereas one would need to train for a half-marathon.

Here's an idea that I've had - a barefoot only cross-country race. Distance could be anything - 5K and 10K are most common XC distances, and this would truly be something unique. Do it in May so the grass has a chance to warm up and runners have a chance to toughen their feet.

How about a compromise--offer a 10 miler.  It's a great distance.  Challenging yet manageable.

We are hoping to bring back the Covered Bridge next October.  We could offer the ten miler in the fall, and a 10K/5K option in the spring.  At least this is what I think would be best.

I am with you on that 10 K plan.  Good distance, easier to manage than 1/2 M, you'll get a bigger crowd, fast yet long.

Way to go Christian..........Steve

10k.

Preferably on the roads that are the first half of your 1/2 marathon - not the
uncommonly hilly second half. :)

 This is alarming

Beer contains female hormones! Yes, that's right, FEMALE hormones!

April 2009, Sydney University and scientists released the results of a
recent analysis that revealed the presence of female hormones in beer.

Men should take a concerned look at their beer consumption.
The theory is that beer contains female hormones (hops contain

phytoestrogens), and that by drinking enough beer, men turn into women .

To test the theory, 100 men each drank 8 schooners of beer within a
one (1) hour period.
It was then observed that 100% of the test subjects, yes, 100% of all
these men:-

1) Argued over nothing.

2) Refused to apologize when obviously wrong.

3) Gained weight.

4) Talked excessively without making sense.

5) Became overly emotional

6) Couldn't drive.

7) Failed to think rationally, and

8) Had to sit down while urinating.

No further testing was considered necessary!!

Send this to the men you know to warn them about
the danger of drinking too much beer!

hi all-
after a stellar performance at the Hands on House half marathon, my old man,
John Markley, headed east with me for the PhillyCares boathouse row 5k.
We joined about 175 other good sports, and ran what had to be the prettiest
race ever. We started and finished on Boathouse Row, along the Schuykill River.
We saw crewing teams for U Penn and Drexel working out while we ran.
We raced on bike trails and paths along the way, artfully dodging
bikers, stroller pushers, inline skaters and joggers. How they all coordinated
wearing their ipods and ignoring us as we tried to circle past them was a
mystery. Made for a slower run.
Weather was sen-saysh, John placed 3rd in men 50-59(the day after doing Hands on
House half marathon!), and I took 1st in women 40-49.
cheers,
kathi

That sounds like a great idea!  I ran the course last year for the first time.  One of the most scenic courses around.  Hopefully someone will step up and get the race going again next year.  I'll try and make it out on the 17th.  I don't think any other local races are going on that weekend anyway.  Hope to see a lot of the club there.

Travis.

Conestoga Trail Run.  It happened and was fun and was great.  Thanks Bill Smith and his merry band of volunteers along with those that yell Smith while in the woods.
Website's been updated with a news report by Barry Decker, photos by Aimee Harmon, Barry Decker, Karen Sandt & Claire Chiamulera (thanks to all of them-a lot).

Changes to schedule/pass the word to whomever may have actually printed out a thursday schedule and might be actively counting down the days.
10/15/09's location has been changed TO Tucquan Glen due to parking issues. No worries, we'll access the Conestoga regardless.  It will be dark, bring a light.
11/05/09's location has been changed TO Safe Harbor, mostly because.

do due diligence but if real, it represents an alternative to active.com and
more importantly, competition. sooner or later the loop will be closed
completely when payments can be easily transmitted between entrant and lrrc.
