BillSmith (billsmithruns@...) has recently read a story on
LancasterOnline.com that might interest you.

Conestoga Trail Run presented imposing challenge
BY BARRY DECKER, Correspondent
Over 130 runners explored Mother Nature's fall beauty along the Susquehanna
River on Sunday, but not all had the chance to observe it during the 15th annual
Conestoga Trail Run.

The athletes spent their time avoiding poison ivy, burn hazel, sharp rocks and
low hanging branches while they made their way along what most described as the
"toughest" 10-mile race in the East.

According to last year's winner and this year's second -place finisher, Evan
Sandt, 37, of Conestoga, "falling on this course is a right of passage,
everybody does it."

Runners begin at the Pequea Campground, proceed past Wind Cave and climb up
hills that would make a mountain goat groan.

At the seven-mile point, they get a scenic view of the Susquehanna from Holtwood
Pinnacle.

But many can't enjoy it, because the pain in the legs and lungs attract most of
their attention.

"The main attraction for the runners is the challenge of the course with its
panoramic beauty and big hills," said race director Bill Smith, who commended
the Lancaster Roadrunners Club for their help.

There are seven runners who love the course so much that they have competed in
all 15 editions of the race.

And this year, they again crossed the line with a smile of satisfaction on their
faces.

They are Dean Brubaker, Frank McCardell and Michael Suydam all of Lancaster
County; Jim Cramer and Bob Long of Lebanon County, Andy Keegan, of Berks
County; and Robert Huey of Bucks County.

This year runners from nine states from Maine to Texas joined the adventure.

The race for the top male spot was fought among four veterans who either won the
event or who finished well in the past.

This year's Master's winner, Ian Schouten, 42, of Lititz, finished fourth
overall. He has a handful of victories in this race to his credit.

"Today was a perfect day for the race with dry trails and blue skies. And the
competition was great," Schouten said.

Schouten added that he tried to stay with the top runner, but fell off the pace
after a few miles.

"I run a steady pace now," Schouten said, a three-time champ. "But if I were
younger, I would try to get in front far enough to get out of sight of the
runners behind me. If they can't see you, they can't reel you in.

Alex Barth, 35, who was third last year, returned to capture the title this year
running the race in 1:36:18.

He said, "Ian (Schouten) set the pace at the beginning and I was content to stay
with him, Evan (Sandt) and Tadd (Morris)."

After a wrong turn at the Holtwood Pinnacle, Barth, who had broken away from the
group, was caught by Sandt.

But Sandt, also took a wrong turn and took a fall which put him 32 seconds back
at the finish (1:36:50).

Third-place finisher, Morris, of Camp Hill, (1:38:27) said that he was a good
technical downhill runner, but "they (top two finishers) got me on the uphills."

On the women's side, Tracy Schrage, 38, of Richmond, (2:02:15) pulled down the
victory.

A firefighter, Schrage said, "I didn't know how my back would be, which I
injured on the job. But it seemed pretty good throughout the race."

She added that this was the "toughest 10-miler" she had ever run.

Amy Roberts, 31, of York (2:10:03) finished second and Diana Widdowson, 41, of
Conestoga (2:10:33), finished in the third spot.

Most of the CTR participants don't compete against the other runners, but
against themselves.

Jose Santiago, 50, of Lancaster, noted that his one goal was to finish, and he
was nervous about that.

Greg Lavell, 35, of Millersville, said, "I feel like, if I can do this trail
run, I can do anything."

And both Santiago and Lavell made it to the finish line.

This article, along with 6 photos was in Wednesday morning and evening Lancaster
newspapers. Hope that most of you saw it.

Thought 1 - Joni suggested that some club members might go to a
Lampeter-Strasburg cross-country meet to support Abby Arndt. Here are two good
possibilities:

Tuesday Next (October 2) - vs. McCaskey at County Park, near the Environmental
Center. From the park, it's not far to the Fun Run in Millersville.

Tuesday, October 9 - at Manheim Township. From Manheim Township, it's not far to
the Fun Run in Adamstown.

Thought 2 - Our Fun Run on October 30 is scheduled for the Lebanon Valley Rail
Trail. On Sunday, Barb and I rode our bikes on the newly refurbished Lancaster
County section of the same trail. We started at 230 west of E-Town and rode a
little more than 4 miles in and out. We might consider switching the run to that
section because the trail is in great shape, and the trailhead is easy to find.

Just a thought.

Thanks to Sally for the presentation on Rolfing last night. It's easy to watch
and think that balancing the body might result in better running and less pain.

STUFF - Many hands needed to stuff goodie bags on Wednesday evening for the Saturday Hands on House race.  We will need to fill 600 bags for the race and 100 bags for the kids fun run.  Official start right after work.  I will be starting at 4:00 and all are welcome to arrive anytime after.  Please let me know if you will be here so I will order enough pizzas.

ROLF - General Membership meeting " ROLFING " also Wednesday at 7:00.  We can do both, with enough help.  I am only 15 minutes away from Higgins Physical Therapy.

Will be at the County Park - BUT NOT AT THE USUAL MEETING PLACE. The
Brain Trust got together at the Frogtown, debated, rebated, got a
quorum, wished for a harem, thought about decorum-for a split sec and
decided.

We'll meet at the Tennis Courts on Golf Road. If completely not sure
where this is, your assigment (you are assigned!), to be completed
within the next 15 (fifteen, which makes 2 complete weeks) or so
days, is to find out where this is. Hints? When you run the first
section of your Sunday run & come up to the "field of dreams" / hard
road, should you continue on the road & not turn left, get to the
gate, turn left, it will be on your right. Or: if you travel out of
Lancaster City on 272 towards Willow Street, get to the left turn at
Golf Road (the Media Hgts entrance), turn left, proceed, tennis
courts are on the left after the golf area and is encircled by a
asphalt that include softball fields, community gardens & yes, tennis
courts. Still Fuzzy? drive around, you'll find.

just noticed! - the second train going west on a saturday is at 9:55a
and arrives in m-joy at 10:04a (if it's on time) - just about perfect
if you want to join me but only do the 13 mile run.

if you plan on this please let me know via email or phone call to 951-
9553 in case i'm early and you're late - so i know to wait!

thanks!

if anyone who is not doing conestoga on sunday would like to do a
long run tomorrow morning, please consider joining me.

i'll be taking the 8:34a amtrak train west to elizabethtown for a
return 20 mile run – just like my amtrak half only a little longer.

if anyone would like to meet me in mt. joy for a 13 mile run, or
centerville (turkey hill on nissley road) for 7 miles – please
come!!! also, if you join me along the way, i will be more than
happy to drive anyone back to their cars in c-ville or m-joy after
we finish. long runs by myself get boring, i could use the company
to keep myself going!

i will run at a very comfortable pace – on tomorrow's run i am not
concerned with time, only distance – so don't worry about being slow
or holding me up, speed doesn't matter. i promise no one will get
left behind!

of if you want to take the train but only want to run 13, take the
8:34 train with me, get off in mt. joy, go have a cup of coffee (nice
coffee shop right on main!), read the newspaper, take the town tour
and wait for me to catch up!)

8:34a leave lancaster on amtrak (photo id needed)
8:50a arrive e-town (drink a bottle of water on the train)
9:00a start running (carry a bottle of gatoraid in my pack)
10:05a fluid stop in mt. joy
11:20 fluid stop at turkey hill in c-ville
finish beer and lunch at brendees!

email me if you have any questions – or call my cell 951-9553 – i
also expect to have my phone with me on the run if you need to find
out where i am.

I will go where the most help is needed.
Seems the smallest group, Ed & Joni, may need more help.

I can start at anytime / anyplace today just let me know.

Christina - Ed & Joni are starting at 5:45 from Holtwood Park.  Peter, Fred, Karen/Miles/Dave/Diana & me will be marking miscellaneous sections of the course.  Not sure if anyone else will be there.

From here till the vile clock change, you may want to bring a light (flashlight/headlight) as the woods are getting ever darker-earlier every nite.  Tomorrow's sunset is listed at 7:09 p.m, which coincides with about the time the woods begin to get dark in a hurry. Subtract a minute from the sunset time each day forward, as 09/27/07 = 6:58 PM is the sunset time for next week's trail run.  Night running under treets with leaves isn't bad at all with a light, but not so fun when it's difficult to see your feet and the trail forward.

Sorry, bad spelling, spell check doesn't catch... Christian  Evil/vile politicians responsible for earlier setting sun & clock change.
