Hi - I live in Lancaster and used to do some distance running and am
looking to get back into it.  I was wondering if this group offers
good information on how to best prepare for long distance.  I would
only do about 5 or 7 miles a day when I was running.  That was about 5
years ago and I've done some running here and there but not
consistently.  Am I in the right place?  I'm not clear on what
distance level someone should be at to be in this group.

If anyone has good tips on foot/ankle protection, as well as helpful
ways to prep one's joints for all that impact, let me know.  In the
past, I didn't get the best shoes or do the best exercises/massages to
help my joints and have paid the price so I want to be better prepared
this time around.

christian - don't worry about a thing. i'm banking on a good turnout
as the time and place are suited to everyone.  in any case, if we're
a party of 3, we won't leave you stranded. come on out and have a
good time.  we'll actually be on or near trail-the conestoga trail
(road section but IS trail-the only LanCounty top to bottom trail
nonetheless), on part of the run.

I thought that my 'running' performance was a safe secret?  (-:

Ok, Diana and I set off for a 21 mile run, that will definitely need
to be done when the weather warms as it will be AWESOME!  From my
house on River Rd to the burnt remains of the Martic Forge - hop on
the CTS to Holtwood and then River Road home.  We made it to Tucquan
and did an extended road run home for a total of ~ 16 miles in 5
hours from 1:30 - 6:30PM.

The run began nicely enough.  Then we got on trail.  I knew it was
going to be ugly ... but am so desparate to be on trail.  Next year
I'm getting Yaktrax for SURE!  Within 5 minutes of getting started I
was hanging onto a tree dangling over Suzie's Hole.  I'm proud to say
we are both brain dead enough to have continued on trails did not
wimp out and get on roads.  Oh no.  The trail was alternately
enjoyable (slushy/no snow) to downright ridiculous (a sheet of ice
going uphill for a half mile, with me and Diana fashioning ice pix
out of stones and sticks).  I found that although rhododendron look
wimpy, they are very strong and good plants to hang onto as you are
careening down off a slope into a stream.  We met up with a few guys
backpacking who I have no idea how they were carrying packs up that
insanity who had made no indentations whatsoever in the ice.  I
giggled a lot, which was not helpful on the ice climb sections.

At Tucquan we smartened up and did decide to head out to the road as
neither of us had a flashlight.  However, this involved roughly 1
mile along the creek and probably the toughest ice section of the day
which led to me opting voluntarily to walk back to the road in the
stream and Diana involuntarily (-: deciding to walk back to the road
in the stream.  Ended up doing and amended slightly longer road run
back to get in a couple of running miles.  I guess I'm ready for the
Cape May Marathon?  (-:

The reward was dead cow from the Conestoga Wagon...excellent reward
indeed.  I'm just glad to have good friends who are happy to partake
in such insanity with me.  It would be a boring life if not!

LRRC runs from two places on Tuesday night

1) Longs Park starting about 5:30, officially at 6:30, until about 7:30.  1.7 mile loops in the park.

2) Trails in the Brick Yards starting at F&M's Baker Field.  Park on the access road behind The Villa Nova Restaurant on Harrisburg Pike.  The group is 4 to 8  in number (I was going to say 4 to 8 strong but that would only start trouble).  Lights are optional, but with so much snow cover you won't need a light tonight.  Bill will most likely offer an antiseptic elixir after the running through the brambles.

 

Part 2 tonight is at the Brickyards Restaurant on Prince St. Lanc.

sledding report from middle creek!

i wanted to get out for trail run this afternoon, so went to middle creek
wildlife area around 4p and took along with my big blue plastic toboggan.
after a short run i made one run down the hill behind the visitor center.

from the top, it seemed like i was doing 90mph in about 4 seconds.  crashed
thru a field of briars, was airborne twice, yelled holy s**t a few times,
went about 300 yards total - a very good run indeed!  figuring i couldn't
improve on it, i packed up and went home.

i think i'll bring it to long's park tomorrow night.

Middle Creek: Park at the museum and follow the sign that says Nature
Trail behind the lot. I run there a lot and that hill is good for
sledding. Locals know it tho so if that bothers you . . . Another:

Hershey Park is the Lebanon Valley's best sledding hill, and the
