Hi Everyone!

Heidi Moebius and me/Santi run on the Snow Trails of theJingle Bell
5Miles up in Reading last Sunday.
She got 1st.on her age group as usual and I got 2nd.(30-34) not that
usual!
Being a Pagoda Pacers race was pretty crowded 143 runners although most
of them did not know about having to run/crawl on the Snow for 4 out of
5 miles!
Temperature was great to keep the Snow nice and frozen but some runners
including me taste the ice ground...
Overall was a lot of fun, lots of food and door prizes! Hardly
recommend!

For anybody that doesn't have to work on Friday. I and possibly a few others will be doing and out and back run on the Mason-Dixon Trail this Friday at 8AM starting from Lock 12 on the York County side of the Norman Wood Bridge. Come and be pro-active and burn off some of that turkey you'll be eating on Christmas.

Thanks to everyone who showed up this Christmas Eve to make the chilly
start to the day most festive by doing the Red Rose Run. I have been
guilty of being a semi-recluse lately, and immensely enjoyed the run
and camaraderie of fellow LRRCers. We had quite a large group out
there! If the roads stay semi-passable, hopefully we can repeat this
fun run a couple more times this winter.

Yeah - thanks everyone! It is great to be back home...Miles is
adorable and seems to be a happy little guy, not much crying or
fussing to speak of yet.

I'm hoping to do a 100 this year and am telling myself this is good
sleep depreviation training. I'll never take sleep for granted
again. Hoping to be running before too long. Maybe be at the Eye
Opener - Part 2.

Go play on the edge
Winter adventurers ring in the new year

By Roberta Strickler, Intelligencer Journal Staff
Intelligencer Journal

Published: Dec 26, 2005 2:01 PM EST

LANCASTER COUNTY, PA - The extreme edge of the year annually arrives
about this time. We call it New Year's Eve, and we declare it a
holiday.

The edge of bicycle racing for Neil Gussman is, "Downhills and
corners. They don't happen often enough, but that's why I do it."The
edge of running for Bill Smith is found high on a hillside above the
Susquehanna River. His edge is "trail running through the woods at
midnight."

Each of these Lancaster men -- Gussman is just past 50 and Smith just
over the edge of 60 -- has been involved deeply in his recreational
sport for more than a dozen years. Both seek the edge of it most
every day of the year.

And so we wonder: How does a person who lives at the edge all year
celebrate the turn of the year?

· Bill Smith will meet his running buddies in a parking lot somewhere
in the river hills, as he has done every New Year's Eve for the past
seven years. Evan Sandt and Harry Smith (not related) will be there,
along with perhaps a dozen other people who are trail runners and
members of the Lancaster Road Runners Club.

They start at the foot of a steep hill, somewhere between the town of
Columbia and the Maryland border. Most likely they will choose a
section of the Conestoga Trail.

Smith will get there early. He will take a small bottle of champagne
and some plastic flutes and hide them somewhere near a good view high
above the river.

Then he will meet the other trail runners about 11 p.m., and they
will follow him. No doubt it will be cold, perhaps icy. But Smith's
leadership style is predictable: They will run up and along the side
of the mountain. They will splash through puddles at stream
crossings. They may need to leap over or pick their way around
patches of ice.

"We go. No matter what we find," said Smith. The goal is to run five
or six miles in less than an hour and a half.

"Whether it is zero degrees or 100 degrees. Temperature, dark night
or obstacles don't matter to us," said Smith.

"My age is 61, and that's about my IQ level, don't you think?" he
asked.

· Neil Gussman recognizes New Year's Day is a Sunday this year. That
just means more racers will join him on the regular Sunday biking
route: 40 miles counterclockwise around the city, from Millersville
through Strasburg, Paradise, Eden and back.

Ice and snow don't matter to Gussman, who rides five days a week, all
year long. "A bicycle is an all-weather vehicle," he said. "Going
across ice is difficult, but hardly ever is it (icy) everywhere in
Lancaster County.

"Skinny tires will cut through a foot of pure snow. Riding in the
rain is a challenge but the tires stick to the road about the same as
riding in the rain in your car. Rain makes me feel like I am really
doing something: Same route. More challenge."

Weather is not the worst of problems for Gussman, who takes his bike
wherever he goes.

He has ridden in city traffic in Paris, Beijing, Shanghai and Sao
Paolo, Brazil, with less distress than he finds in Lancaster County.
Here, drivers of pickup trucks are his enemies.

"Especially in southern Lancaster County," he said, " a pickup truck
will try to run you off the road. One guy who lives along our route
even put out tacks to puncture our tires," he said.

"New Year's Day should be the best time of all: Everyone else will be
indoors watching a football game. We will have the road to ourselves."

· Karen Northeimer's New Year's Eve may seem less extreme because her
sport -- cross-country skiing -- is a winter sport.

However, since local winters can be fickle, Northeimer and her
friends drive farther and farther to find snow. Northeimer, of
Lancaster, is a member of Central Pennsylvania's only organized group
of cross-country skiiers, Kick 'n Gliders.

This week, members of the 30-year-old club will drive to Canada for
snow. Northeimer will bridge the old year to the new at Craftsbury
Commons, a cross-country ski center in Vermont just 30 miles from the
Canadian border.

The 500-mile drive to get there usually covers all of the extremes of
snow and ice, she said. The payoff comes at midnight in the darkness
of the Northern Kingdom after a day of skiing.

The Craftsbury tradition is to go around the camp, gather all the
dried-out Christmas trees and pile them into one huge bonfire. A few
cases of champagne are chilled in the snow banks.

When midnight comes, corks are popped and sparks from the fire mix
with the stars of a sky unspoiled by city lights.

"Some years," she said, "the weather is warm and the fire is almost
too hot. We linger there, making resolutions and swapping ski stories
with everyone around the fire.

"In other years, we have a zero-degree night. Midnight seems to not
last as long those years."

But New Year's Day will bring hours of cold, crunchy snow for skiing
with friends old and new who enjoy life on the edges of their skinny
skis.

For now, yes. I will be checking with Keith Knipling to see if he is going to have the Catawba 50k the weekend of the 12th. If he isn't I will be rescheduling the Buzzards, should know within the week.

I vote to leave it where it is.  I am looking forward to a couple hard back to back weeks.

On separate note, Randy Dietz and I are planning on running from Swatara Gap (Rt.72) to the River (roughly 33 miles) on the AT next Saturday morning.  Our plan to start at 6:00 AM so you will need a light for the first hour or so.  No aid, we plan to get our water from streams and carry our food.   If you are interested let me as we have to arrange transportation. The logistics are kinda tough.
