MT HOPE was SATURDAY. Under a backdrop of changing leaves, wind and rolling
hills in the fore and background, approximately 125 ran the race, ate
bagels, took home some wine, and enjoyed. Thanks to race director Harry
Smith and consummate right arm man Jim Buchanan for putting on the run for
the wine. Thanks also to all volunteers and of course all that ran. This
race is growing! Last year’s field hit the 80-90 range, this year, 125.
Look for this one to get even larger.

Please remember, all events/happenings are open to anyone and everyone
wishing to come, have fun and run. Generally, runners find runners of like
ability to partner up. Regardless of speed, everyone’s welcome. So
encourage that person that’s been thinking but not acting, no one bites,
they only look like funny runners.
LONG’S PARK EVERY TUESDAY 6:30 PM The park is a convenient and safe place
to run throughout the winter and provides a great opportunity to work on
establishing consistent pace, getting accustomed to loop format running and
running in the dark under street lights. When its ugly, dark, rainy, cold,
cloudy or crisp, clear or mild, its a little easier to get motivated at the
park then anywhere or elsewhere..... Please note that some people get there
early (6:00) to do a little extra mileage. Rest assured, the loop is 1
5/8ish miles long, so runners will (re)appear time and again. The second
part of the fun will take place at The Villa Nova East (not West), 1310
Harrisburg Pike.
EVERY SUNDAY 7:30 AM at the County Park, Lancaster. Park in front of the
pool. Run next to the pool, into woods, on to the rolling hillside next to
the conestoga creek, cross the field of dreams, into mill creek’s 2 loop
kiwanas area, look for birds in creek, ascend to the eshelman park area near
the skate park, descend to creek level then immediately ascend up no hands
hill, pass the 2 view vistas, head into the woods and over (back) to the
field of dreams, cross and head down to the conestoga creek, hit the last
hill, zip thru the garden of the five senses and have of cup of bill’s joe.
CLARKS VALLEY SAT 11/10
Location = RT 325 Northeast of the “city” of Dauphin. Will be running a
12ish mile loop that starts and finishes at the game lands parking lot in
Clark’s Valley, where the Appalachian Trail crosses RT 325. The run is a
counter clockwise loop on trail and railroad bed with 2 major hills.
Course: Trail = Start on the Water tank trail (blue blaze) run to railroad
bed, left on railroad bed (unblazed), left on unmarked uphill trail, right
on Horseshoe trail, left on Appalachian trail (white blaze) to finish.
Trail does have rocks. Please bring water (min 20 oz) to carry during the
run as none will be available on the course. Plan on a 2-3 hour run. After,
we’ll be checking out the Selinsgrove brewery-one of PA’s finest. HIGHLY
recommended. Care to join us, RATs?

I know there's only about 7 people going to read this but thanks to
all who helped this morning. I'll try to find out if any RATS are
doing the VHTRC Fat Ass, carpooling and split cost on a room sounds
good to me. Getting up at three thirty and leaving by four thirty
doesn't sound near as good.
Harry
I'm looking for people who are interested in car-pooling to the Fat
Ass 50K outside Washington DC on December 15th. It is a 50K event on
some of the Bull Run Run course. The run is an out-and-back, so even
if you don't feel up to doing 50K (31 miles), you can turn around
whenever you want and run whatever distance you want. Dave Halbleib
has already told me he is interested, and I think Glenn Yanos may
also be interested. Here are the pros and cons as I see it:
Pros:
1. VHTRC (Virginia Happy Trails Running Club) is full of a lot
of "fun" people, who are very hospitable to outsiders.
2. No entry fee.
3. Aid and post run refreshments are available.
4. You can bet your sweet "bippee" that there will be a Part 2
somewhere, with adult beverages.
5. No one will have to drive the entire way.
6. The Bull Run course is mostly all run-able (no monstrous hills or
rocks).
7. The more Buzzards/LRRC members, the merrier.
Cons:
1. The run starts at 8:00, so we will either have to leave Lancaster
EXTREMELY early, or we can leave Friday night and split the cost of
hotel rooms.
2. There are no other cons. If you can think of another one, you
should probably stay home.
Let me (Andy Charles) know if you are interested by phoning me at 399-
9798 or emailing me at ultrabuzzard@...
Evan...can you please forward this email to everyone on your email
list?

BALTIMORE MARATHON
In case it becomes a bone of contention ‘round the campfire someday,
Baltimore’s marathon course does indeed have hills-at least for the first 17
miles. After that, its flat or downhill. The race certainly hit on all
points that make a great time a great time-great weather, great course,
great fan support, great aid stations, great things to do before and after
the race as well as a NEW concept-a Saturday marathon. Now people can
actually relax and pursue fun after the race instead of scurrying to get
home/work or burning a vacation day..... The race had approx 5200 finishers
this year, and am sure the number doubles or triples when the good word gets
out. Those that did: Larry Burkett, Cyndi Dolgas, Eric Hoerner, Steve
Farrah, Jeff Bradley, Karen Shiley, Bob Long, Joe Lee, Jody Brown, &
me-Evan. Any more? lemme know. (Lancaster runner) Connie Buckwalter was
the third overall female at 2:56ish. The site.......
www.thebaltimoremarathon.com results can be found at
http://www.thebaltimoremarathon.com/Results.xls - you’ll probably need MS
excel to view. The only odd thing about this thing was a new aid station
ritual-on 3 separate occasions, I’d put out my hand to grab a cup of water
only to have the cup drawn away from my hand. Admittedly, the last road
marathon I ran was 14 months ago, so I guess I’m not up on current marathon
etiquette-something in my body language that tells cup person to retract
water cup when 1 wants water cup? Anyone know what this ritual means????
Mercifully, the ritual did not repeat itself in the tavern community
following the race.
RUN ACROSS BERKS COUNTY..........
Was held on Sun 10/21. Harry Smith and some RATS (Reading Area Trail Slogs/
runners) ran 50ish miles across the 4 letter pluralized county to our north.
Uncertain if this is the first such crossing, but probably is, Harry can
now add this to his extensive running resume. Doing the Continental Divide
Trail soon?

RANDOM mull over stuff
Received a $50 tuition voucher from/to my alma mater-Rochester Institute of
Technology (not RPI, not RTI, or the U or R;..........RIT). Technically,
this means the $50 application fee is waived to the applicant. Normally I
throw this type of thing out with all the other “You’ve given us 4-5 years
of tuition dollars, why not contribute to our trillion dollar endowment” but
this is actually something that saves the 50 bucks that’s required from
interested applicants. So, if you’ve got a child, or if you are a child
that’s thinking about heading to RIT for the next 4-5 years, I’ll be happy
to throw this thing in the mail to the first person that shouts. Lemme know
- esandt@... - I still have this thing-Its free. Very un

DETAIL/DESCRIP/OP ED/ADD?L ?FO BELOW
LONG?S PARK TUESDAY Run the park during the evil clock change orchestrated
by evil soccer moms(-no logic supports this time change, none, zero, none-).
Park/start at pavilion next to large-kid-jungle gym-playing area ? its a
pain to find first off, but the pain translates to knowledge once one knows
where to go-its no longer painful. The park is a convenient and safe place
to run throughout the winter and provides a good opportunity to work on
establishing consistent pace, getting accustomed to loop format running and
running in the dark under street lights. When its ugly, dark, rainy, cold,
cloudy or crisp, clear or mild, its a little easier to get motivated at the
park then anywhere or elsewhere.....
EVERY SUNDAY 7:30 AM at the County Park, Lancaster. Park in front of the
pool. Run next to the pool, into woods, on to the rolling hillside next to
the conestoga creek, cross the field of dreams, into mill creek?s 2 loop
kiwanas area, look for birds in creek, ascend to the eshelman park area near
the skate park, descend to creek level then immediately ascend up no hands
hill, pass the 2 view vistas, head into the woods and over (back) to the
field of dreams, cross and head down to the conestoga creek, hit the last
hill, zip thru the garden of the five senses and have of cup of bill?s joe.
******************
BALTIMORE MARATHON
In case it becomes a bone of contention ?round the campfire someday,
Baltimore?s marathon course does indeed have hills-at least for the first 17
miles. After that, its flat or downhill. The race certainly hit on all
points that make a great time a great time-great weather, great course,
great fan support, great aid stations, great things to do before and after
the race as well as a NEW concept-a Saturday marathon. Now people can
actually relax and pursue fun after the race instead of scurrying to get
back home/work or burning a vacation day..... The race had approx 5200
finishers this year, and am sure the number doubles or triples when the good
word (which travels fast) gets out. Those that did: Larry Burkett, Cyndi
Dolgas, Eric Hoerner, Steve Farrah, Jeff Bradley, Karen Shiley, Bob Long,
Joe Lee, Jody Brown, & me-Evan. Any more? lemme know. (Lancaster runner)
Connie Buckwalter was the third overall female at 2:56ish. The site.......
www.thebaltimoremarathon.com results can be found at
http://www.thebaltimoremarathon.com/Results.xls - you?ll probably need MS
excel to view. The only odd thing about this thing was a new aid station
ritual-on 3 separate occasions, I?d put out my hand to grab a cup of water
only to have the cup drawn away from my hand. Admittedly, the last road
marathon I ran was 14 months ago, so I guess I?m not up on current marathon
etiquette-something in my body language that tells cup person to retract
water cup when 1 wants water cup? Mercifully, this ritual did not repeat
itself in the tavern community following the race.
RUN ACROSS BERKS COUNTY..........
Was held on Sun 10/21. Harry Smith and some RATS (Reading Area Trail Slogs/
runners) ran 50ish miles across the 4 letter pluralized county to our north.
Uncertain if this is the first such crossing, but probably is, Harry can
add this to his large running resume. Doing the Continental Divide Trail
soon?

TUESDAY 10/23 LANDIS VALLEY/COVERED BRIDGES RUN
From Lancaster, take Rt. 272 north to Landis Valley Rd, make left at light,
turn right at Farm Museum, look for runners in very large parking lot.
Run the course that everyone runs. This is one of the most well known
courses in the Lancaster running community. The course runs through the old
and new of Lancaster county – from the high rent Hunsicker/Butter road
compounds, and on to Amish farmland. This is the run that bookends the
‘away from Long’s park’ fun run season. Come out and enjoy. Check out the
website’s rave run too-http://www.geocities.com/lrrclub/Snakehill.html BTW:
the course has many names including Snake Hill, Covered Bridges, Twin
Bridges, The Northbrook Strider, homecourse, Landis Valley and probably a
few more.
EVERY SUNDAY 7:30 AM at the County Park, Lancaster. Park in front of the
pool. Run next to the pool, into woods, on to the rolling hillside next to
the conestoga creek, across the field of dreams, into mill creek’s 2 loop
kiwanas area, look for birds in creek, ascend to the eshelman park area near
the skate park, descend to creek level then immediately ascend up no hands
hill, pass 2 view vistas, head into the woods and over (back) to the field
of dreams, cross and head down to the conestoga creek, hit the last hill,
zip thru the garden of the five senses and have of cup of bill’s joe.

BALTIMORE MARATHON
In case it becomes a bone of contention ‘round the campfire someday,
Baltimore’s marathon course does indeed have hills-at least for the first 17
miles. After that, its flat or downhill. The race certainly hit on all
points that make a great time-great weather, great course, great fan
support, great aid stations, great things to do before and after the race as
well as a NEW concept-a Saturday marathon. Now people can actually relax
and pursue fun after the race instead of scurrying to get back home/work or
burning a vacation day..... The race had approx 5200 finishers this year,
am sure this number doubles or triples when the good word (which travels
fast!) gets out. Those that did: Larry Burkett, Cyndi Dolgas, Eric Hoerner,
Steve Farrah, Jeff Bradley, Karen Shiley, Bob Long, Joe Lee, Jody Brown, &
me-Evan. , Any more? lemme know. (Lancaster runner) Connie Buckwalter was
the third overall female at 2:56ish. The site.......
www.thebaltimoremarathon.com results can be found at
http://www.thebaltimoremarathon.com/Results.xls - you’ll probably need MS
excel to view. The only odd thing about this thing was a new aid station
ritual-on 3 separate occasions, I’d put out my hand to grab a cup of water
only to have the cup drawn away from my hand. Admittedly, the last road
marathon I ran was 14 months ago, so I guess I’m not up on current marathon
etiquette-something in my body language that tells cup person to retract
water cup when 1 wants water cup? Fortunately this ritual did not repeat
itself tavern in the community following the race.
RUN ACROSS BERKS COUNTY..........
Was held on Sun 10/21. Harry Smith and some RATS (Reading Area Trail Slogs/
runners) ran 50ish miles across the 4 letter pluralized county to our north.
Uncertain if this is the first such crossing, but probably is, Harry can
add this to his 89 page running resume. Doing the Continental Divide Trail
soon?
EMAIL LIST
The LRRC is now on Yahoo’s Groups email list. What is it? Its a formation
of an e-mail discussion group about the LRRC in which anyone can talk about
runn-ing, funn-ing as well as anything that may come up in casual or
non-casual conversation. This is a great way to tell people what’s going
on, it can act as a central repository for email discussion, debate and
alert. The email alerts (such as the one you are reading right now) will be
sent there as well, so if anyone misses/deletes/wishes to read previous
alerts, they can find them there. We’re also starting to get some pictures
in too-if you’ve got some you’d like to see, send them to me. A few
choices present themselves for those wishing to read emails that are posted
- daily emails sent to your email address, a condensed digest sent to your
email address or actually going to the site to read the email postings. To
get in, you’ll need to get a yahoo id, then “subscribe” which just means
you’ll fill out some online form like things. I’m kinda new to the whole
thing, but if interested but confused, I’ll try to help you through. First
go to the web address listed below, then follow the steps.

Lemme know

Well, at least two of us can have an intelligent conversation. But
you are correct, we do need a few more members.
Perhaps someone could print out instructions on how to log on, or
sign up, or whatever, and pass the forms around at fun runs and

THURSDAY 10/18 MT GRETNA Meet at Game Lands Parking Lot on Pinch Road.
Though Mt. Gretna is known for its trails, lots of nice roads are available
to run. Mt. Hope is very close, one could incorporate some of the October
27th 2001 (Mark Your Calendars Now!) Distance Classic Course into a nice
run, or make up a course from the parking lot (Cider Press Road for
starters). Or run the trails. Those apprehensive to trail running will
find Gretna to be a decent introduction-nothing too technical or vertical.
Just watch out for the dog walkers.
EVERY SUNDAY 7:30 AM at the County Park, Lancaster. Park in front of the
pool. Run the course that made Bill Smith infamous. Run with or without
water crossings as fast or as slow as desired. Reset Bob Bergman’s 6 (or
was it 7?) loop record by running 9 loops. Spend the rest of the day
enjoying whatever you like.

Park in front of the
pool. Run the course that made Bill Smith even more famous. Run with or
without water crossings as fast or as slow as desired. Reset Bob Bergman’s
6 (or was it 7?) loop record by running 9 loops. Spend the rest of the day
enjoying whatever you like.

Need volunteers! Come support your local running community by working an aid
station, working the start/finish, handing out food, handing out water,
taking splits, placing cones, taking in the scenery, placing signs, driving
the pace car, working the start, working the finish chute, and yelling and
screaming like Wellesley Girls for your favorite runner. And remember, it
IS cool to stick around for the entire race! Going home early is very
loser-ly. Contact esandt@... and I’ll get you in touch with the
right people.

CONGRATS/clarification
Larry Gray ran the Atlantic City Marathon over the weekend. Nice job Larry.
See Donald Trump? Actually Larry observed the marathon, and competed with
the table, sorry. Know how to play baccarat?
WHY GO TO ATGLEN?
To run the Covered Bridges 10 Mile Race on saturday. Another 10 mile-rrrr.
Maybe the format is not dead. Though I have not run the race, I’ve run some
of the course and thought it more than better than okay. Check out this
fall classic.
RANDOM mull over stuff
Received a $50 tuition voucher to my alma mater-Rochester Institute of
Technology (not RPI, not RTI, or the U or R;..........RIT).
So, if you’ve got a child even thinking about
heading to RIT for the next 4-5 years, I’ll be happy to throw this thing in
the mail to the first person that shouts. Lemme know - esandt@...

I NOW KNOW SOMETHING I DID NOT KNOW
””RSVP = abbreviation for the french "respondez s'il vous plait" which
translated literally means respond (or answer) if you please. I knew 3
years for French in college would be useful some time.”” Thank you Bob from
Lebanon.
HALLOWEEN HITS ELM ST
Does this have to do with running? Sure, we’ll be talking all about running
while drinking at 243 Elm Street, Lancaster PA, USA. Don your cap, gown or
any particular costume you care to don and ham it up on Elm St October 27,
6:30 pm. LRRC resident females, Karen Shiley (little, not big, Karen) and
Cyndi (don’t forget the i and the y) Dolgas will be putting on this little
party to celebrate the best holiday of the year, Halloween. Delightful
beverages will be available to everyone that attends. They do request that
attendees bring some semblance of potluck (defined, this means whatever food
is on hand without special buying) food. Everything else will be already
there-won’t have to eat with fingers. Everyone reading this little invite
is invited, even RATS. Come one, come all. Don’t be shy, even if one does
not know anyone, they certainly will on 10/27 in short order. Details?
esandt@... & I’ll get you to the right place/I’ll have my people
talk to your people/blahblahblahblahblah. Oh yeah, please RSVP (what’s this
stand for?-see above.

This is truly one of the most well known
courses in the running community. The course truly runs through the old and
new of Lancaster county – from the high rent Hunsicker/Butter road
compounds, and on through the Amish farmland. This is the run that bookends
the ‘away from Long’s park’ fun run season. Come out and enjoy. Check out
the website’s rave run too-http://www.geocities.com/lrrclub/Snakehill.html
BTW: the course has many names including Snake Hill, Covered Bridges, Twin
Bridges, The Northbrook Strider homecourse and probably a fewmore.
