In Hershey. The old timers here rememember (maybe they can) when 10 k was sort
of the the standard road-race distance. You could find one almost every week.
The old Adamstown race was a 10k, so was the old Elizabetown race (several
courses) the Run for Peace, also in E-town, the Chocolate Chase in Hershey, and
the old Appalachian AC also held several 10 k's. But in recent years it's almost
disappeared in favor of 5 k's. But there are still some. This was a big event
in Hershey, with 1,489 finishers, and a 7 A M start. Wow, almost 1,500 runners
for a 7 AM start. The early start was necessary because about a mile and a half
of the course ran thru Hersheypark and it had to be before the park opened for
the day. It was an interesting course, with no mile markings but kilometer
signs, even quarter kilometer signs, (every 250 meters, 4.25 km, 4.50 km, 5.00
km, 5.25 km. . . . ). Good, well organized event.

What was interesting was there were 570 male finishers and 919 female
finishers. Is this representative of road races (what about trail races?) in
general or was it just a strange ratio related specifically to the Hershey race?

Anyway, it was good to have a 10 km back on the schedule. I'd forgotten how hard
they can be.

Just an fyi...the Turkey Hill Country Classic, used to be a 10k only race but now both a 5k and 10k event, is coming up on May 5th.  This is a well organized race as well if you never had the chance to attend.

Travis.

Fond memories of the AAC winter series. Great racing with Dale Umberger for the sub-masters title.

Hey all, there is an injury prevention talk going on at Hartz PT over on Good Dr. on May 1st for anyone interested. See the attached flyer for more information.

Dan and Adam,

Attaching a flyer for an upcoming running talk. The topic is pretty broad, but will provide some good info for you crazy runners. (Or ex-runners, in Dan’s case…)

Would appreciate if you could pass this on to folks who may be interested.

Thanks for your input on topics. There are so many good ones… we decided to focus on injury prevention to see what kind of response we get. Always open to new ideas, so feel free to pass them on any time!

** The 100 is now sold out but not everyone has submitted their personal check or money orders (for this race as well as the 50K and 100K races), so to be put on the waiting list email me at rd_oc100@...

** Since the 100 is RRCA's national Ultra Championship race, cancellations in the 50K and 100K will try to be applied towards the 100 mile race.  As a result, the waiting lists for the 50K and 100K are CLOSED, and very limited entries - if any at all - will be allowed into the 50K and 100K off of their waiting lists.

** Next group training run / hike - Saturday May 19th at 8 AM - see the race websites TRAINING RUNS  page.  Approximately 40 to 50 people will probably be on the trails that day, especially a large Ohio / Cleveland area contingent.  Stop on out to Oil Creek State Park and do your reconnaisance mission early.

** Need a great summer trail race?  Want it to be near Oil Creek State Park so you can scope the OC100's Gerard Hiking Trail out while attending the race?  Then try the nearby RUN BETWEEN THE SUNS  12 hour double-track trail race on June 30th.  5 mile loop trail course that is challenging but runnable.  Solo and 2 and 4 person relay teams.  $80 before May 15th, then it ups to $90 until June 15th, then $100 thereafter.  Just 9 miles southwest of OC100's Oil Creek State Park -  directions from aid station # 2 in Petroleum Center PA  so you can check it out on the May 19th group training run or if you are in the area.  RD's Jeff and Heather Nelson run OC100 aid station # 1 at Wolfkill Run that won the "best aid station award" the first two years and were neck-and-neck last year for the top award as well... so you know it will be a great race!  Jeff is our OIl Creek 100K course record holder and finished 3rd in the OC100 last year in his first 100 mile attempt.  You can see who has registered (and register) for the RBTS 12 hour trail race at this link:

Nice article Sil... I think a "Three Stooges" museum would also be a nice addition to the North Queen Street area. On a more serious note, if they could clean up some of the crime/drug infested areas in the southern end of the city, I think even more folks would entertain the idea of experiencing "city" life.

You're right, Mike, but Lancaster is still a paradise compared to Harrisburg, York, & Reading. And the Stooges Museum would take us from Paradise to Utopia.

Alright fast guys (Evan). What happened to the lead pack in the big 5 k
Saturday? Loose their way? Did they come back? The article in the newspaper
wasn't very clear. I was at a small 5 km in Lebanon last week where the top six
guys blew thru the turnaround also. Maybe you guys are running so fast that your
vision blurrs. Us slowpokes don't seem to have those problems. We just have to
stay ahead of the trailing police car and get done before dark.

So (Evan top 10) what happened?
