If anyone has seen my calves, I would like to have them back.
I shouldn't be so cynical, but I suspect that they may have been stolen. I had
my calves when I set off with my friend Linda Wack
on the long trek up Second Mt. on the closing stretch of Sunday's Buzzards
Marathon. Then RD Harry Smith went by us . . . or should
I say he *ran* by us. Said something about having run all the way up this
mountain a couple of times, and then off he ran. And
ran, and ran - right over the top. At first, I assumed that the deflated
feeling that came resulted from watching him do this 24
miles into the run, but now I question whether he may have just swiped my calves
as he steamrolled by. There were other Buzzards
nearby, however - chants of "Buzzards rule!" were coming from Leo and Karen, as
they gained on us during that climb, at what clearly
was just conversational pace for them. This, while I am panting as if it was
the closing stretch of a local 5K.
And then there was that Buzzard dog, Kiera (sp?), who likely ran about 40 miles,
most of the time while toting around a big stick in
the hope that this dumb Virginian would play fetch on yet another hilly section
of the course. Come to think of it, Buzzard Dog
stands at just about calf height - and I believe one of his owner's may have
been manning the grill at the end?! The mystery of who
sprang for the "hamburgers" may have just been solved . . . and I am growing a
bit more nervous about the bratwurst, as well . . .
Seriously though, thanks to all of the Buzzards for your tremendous hospitality
- it was a nice day for a tough run up in your neck
o' the woods in Pennsylvania. I used to think the name "Pennsylvania" came
about because of William Penn and some woods, but now I
realize a more accurate translation must be "the land that switchbacks forgot" .
. . Very much appreciate the finisher's award (next
time I will endeavor to have my pants on for the presentation), and all the
post-race grub. Not to mention the mid-race grub - want
to add my thanks to Ann for waiting out there for us, and seeing that we got
some sugary calories in us as well.
And whoever has my calves, no doubt you will take better care of them than I do
- but maybe I can get them back at the HAT run?
Thanks again, Harry, and thanks again to the rest of your Buzzard crew - you
really do rule.

Thanks to all who made the 7th Buzzards Marathon a success. A really
big thanks to Ann Daniel who has taken care of the aid station at Clark's
Valley for the last several years, we couldn't do it without you Fluff. Another
big
thanks to our home brewers Karen "Baby Buzzard" Shiely and Al K from the
RATS. Karen distributed very distinctive finishers awards after the run and Al
had not one but two "to die for" brews on tap after the run. Thanks to Larry
"Cap'n Num Nuts" Peters for manning the grill at the finish, I'm not sure who
sprung for the burgers and dogs but thanks a ton. Thanks to all the RATS and
DAWGS for coming and also to all you VHTRC people for coming north and enjoying
our PA hills and dales. You members of "Team Mango," rumor has it that Dodds ran
the Caesar Rodney Half Marathon in Delaware, what's up with that? Also a big
thanks to Karen's friend Max for the free massages after the run. And a big
thanks to all of you for not getting like really lost. I checked the lot after
our trip to the bar and the last two finishers had just arrived so everybody's
out of the woods and I can sleep tonight. Hey, let's do it again next March.
Harry "El Buzz" Smith
