Hi Everyone –
Sorry about the short notice, but the Town Council is set to vote on the purchase of land for a sports complex tonight. It’s big enough for 2 fields, a regular size and a smaller U10 size field, in addition to basketball courts and a building. So…
The Los Gatos United Soccer League invites all Competitive and Recreational teams, to join in a celebration of a historic vote by the Los Gatos Town Council at 7:00 pm (It is Agenda Item #6, so you have some wiggle room), regarding the purchase of land for the new Los Gatos Sports Complex on University Avenue. Please have all players wear team uniforms, and be ready to celebrate the birth and creation of 2 NEW SOCCER FIELDS IN THE HEART OF LOS GATOS.
Please join us for this VERY HISTORIC DAY!
And when vote count is over, and the measure is passed, I EXPECT EVERYONE TO JUMP UP AND YELL GOOOOOAALLLLLLL!
Thanks - Ed San Juan- Happy President of the LGUSL and the LGUSL Soccer Board:

Hi AJ,
The GU9 Los Gatos WildCats are playing in the MVLA Round Robin
Jamboree this coming weekend, August 25, 26, and we are told that we
need to supply one "volunteer" referee for one game. The game that
we have been assigned is Saturday, August 25 at 10:00am. The referee
should show up by 9:40 at Covington Field in Los Altos. Directions
are below. Can you help me in locating someone that is available and
is willing to help out this weekend? Last year you had some "new"
referees that you wanted to "break in". This would be a great
opportunity for that if you have anyone this year. If we need to pay
the standard ref fee, we are willing to do so if needed. Please let
me know if you have any ideas.
Thank you,
Rich Stephens

Registration for the first weekend of the SBTB Tournament is posted and available for signing up!
The pay is $30 for U13 and younger and $35 for U14 and older. I was planning on starting with fresh referee accounts, but it turns out there was an expected wrinkle so I did not do this. So, if you have a Count Me In referee account, you are ready to go. If you refereed for Soccer by the Bay last year or for the Burlingame Soccer Club in the last 2 years, you have an account.
To start, I would like everybody to alternate Center and AR and sign up for no more than 4 games a day. A week before the tournament, if we are short we will open things up more. We want to make sure that everybody has a chance to ref, and nobody gets too tired to do a good job.
IMPORTANT: If you have an account, or think you do, but can't remember the login info please email me. Setting up duplicate accounts can cause some problems.
Attached are instructions for how to create an account and use CMI. There are three steps, first enter your contact info. Please put your cell phone number in the Alternate Phone field. I need to be able to reach you the day of the games. I will then review your account and if I have all the information, I will authorize you to sign up for games. Once your account is authorized, you can sign up. I will go my best to authorize accounts as quickly as possible.
There are 80 teams; U11 to U15 Boys and Girls CYSA Division 1
We can use all the referees that your teams can muster. Please do not consider volunteering players. The tournament is for players to play the game. Otherwise we can use all that are acapable.
This year referees fee are $30 per game for Referee and Assistant Referee
Additionally each referee will receive a T Shirt or Hat (Referees Choice), a flipping coin and lunch. For those referees who travel from outside the Santa Cruz Area and are not associated with a team a $25 bonus for gas.
Please respond to this email if you are available.
Please send the following information.
Name:
Age (if younger than 18)
Comfort level: Referee, AR Only, Age and gender level
Saturday: All Day; AM Only; PM Only
Sunday: All Day; AM Only; PM Only
You must have a current USSF 2007 Badge.
Appropriate uniforms will be required. For coordination please use only black socks with three white strips.
I will be making the assignments after the Fourth of July and send out the preliminary matrix by July 15th.
Come learn about an exciting new form of soccer for people in powered wheelchairs – Power Soccer! A clinic will be held in San Jose on August 4, 2007 which will introduce you to this new sport and provide certification as a power soccer referee. Please note; this is an all-volunteer activity.
Power soccer is the first competitive team sport designed and developed specifically for power wheelchair users. This action packed team sport combines the skill of the wheelchair user with the speed and power of the chair itself, to participate in an extremely challenging game. The rules of Power Soccer are similar to soccer and equipment needs are minimal. The game is played on a regulation indoor basketball court with a 13" soccer ball. Two teams of 4 attack, defend and maneuver the ball in an attempt to score and prevent goals. The game is non-stop in action, similar to an indoor soccer game.
Power Soccer has been played in various countries around the world for more than 30 years, but is just now exploding onto the public scene. The US Power Soccer Association (USPSA) was recently created to govern Power Soccer in the United States. The inaugural Power Soccer World Cup will be played in Japan in 2007.

Please address the following issue with all your active referees:
During the Spring League, it takes an average of one week and a half for me to receive the referee report and the player pass following a red card.
A referee who issued a red card HAS TO TURN THE REPORT WITHIN 24 HOURS so the process can be done effectively. I process the report the next day I receive them.
It is absolutely UNACCEPTABLE that a player have to sit down more games that required because of the laziness (I picked that word) of our referees.

WINCHESTER, Va. - A young soccer player died during a scrimmage
Monday evening in Winchester, Va.
Investigators said 10-year-old Hayden Barnes Ellias was playing
goalkeeper for the Winchester United under-11 team. They said he was
positioned in the goal on a Millbrook High School soccer field.
Coaches said action was taking place on the other side of the field
when they heard a loud crash.
Police said the goal toppled over on Ellias, killing him. They are
investigating how the incident happened.
"At this point we're unsure of exactly what happened," said Steve
Edwards of Frederick County Public Schools. "Frederick County
Sheriff's Department is doing an investigation. The only thing we
can say with any certainty is that it was a terrible, tragic
accident."
School officials said the independent soccer league -- a partnership
between Frederick County Public Schools and the park system -- used
school equipment.
Officials could not specifically identify which goal was involved in
the accident.
"The goals are portable, the goals that they were using last night,
and they were owned by the Frederick County schools, but in terms of
how they were secured and so on and so forth, I don't have any
information on that," Edwards said.
A crisis team of counselors has been dispatched to the victim's
school, Bass-Hoover Elementary, where Principal Gay Yowell issued
this statement: "All of us in the Bass-Hoover family are saddened by
the loss of one of our students. He was a valued member of our
school family and will be missed."

I just wanted to give your refs at Sat., 9/9, 11 a.m., Union GU12 a
standing ovation. They were fabulous. We had an issue with a
handball in the goalie box. The ref made the call, explained the call
to the coaches and then proceeded to explain it to the girls. He
assisted both teams in setting up for the PK and then the game
continued. I was incredibly impressed.
In the past, my kids have been on teams where the coaches and parents
have become refs and sideline judges. I feel this takes away from the
kids' (and coach's) experience. In addition, ref-ing was not the
coach's primary job. Though we are one game into the season, I wanted
to let you know how thrilled I was with how the game played out (pun
intended).
For the record, I voiced my appreciation to the refs at half-time and
after the game as well.
Message # 3
Thanks for a job well done for both GU11 Wild games. We were very
pleased with the officiating!

We had a fabulous center ref on Saturday. One of the best I've seen,
even through several seasons of comp.
This was for the Rec GU12 11:00 game at Union.
Unfortunately, there was only 1 line ref so the home Asst coach had
to cover.

Hi,
Just wanted to let you know my husband (a previous soccer player) was
very impressed with our referee on Saturday. He did the girls U14
game at Fisher at 10:45. He felt he has been one of the best we've
had the past 7+ years.
Thanks,
Mustang Mother

I just wanted to let you know that I think Sean, who ref'd 5 games
Saturday at Union is awesome! He made good calls, he did not overcall
and he spent the time teaching the kids about the rules. I was very
impressed and told him so.
Sean said he is willing to work with refs like Steven to teach them
how to AR and build their confidence. I will do my best to see that
that happens for S.
Sean did a great job and did so at the later games as well as the
earlier ones.
