Well, things are going fairly good for the races this weekend. It's been
something to put this together as quickly as we have! This will be a bare-bones
event. Nothing fancy. We will have water and Gatorade at the parking area and a
couple of Port-a-lets. Here's some things for all of you to look over:

1. Bring your own shade like tents or the hatchback of your SUV. The temps
should be pretty good, so far a predicted high of 88 degrees with lots o' sun
and lows in the mid-60's both days. No idea what the humidity will be and how
that'll affect the heat index. Suffice it to say that it'll get warmer as the
day goes on.

2. If you can't make arrangements for handups at the feed zones (no neutral
feeds will be available), then be prepared to carry your own aqua (that's water
to those of you at LSU - sorry, I'm an ULM fan! Man, ya'll kicked our butts!)
and food. In some of these races you'll need it! You cannot ditch your empty
bottles!! Put it back in your pocket or cage and carry it home with you. Auto DQ
for pitching trash on the race course unless you do it in the designated feed
zones. That includes gel packs.

3. There's places to eat and to get food in Benton. There's a Brookshire's and a
small grocery store in town. Also, a couple of pizza places and a Dairy Queen.
Take time to spend some cash there if you will.

4. LAMBRA rankings: If you want to qualify for points as a masters racer, you
must sign up for the 35+ men's group. There will be champions medals for the
other age groups on Saturday but you'll only get points if you sign up as a
35-pluser. For example: you can be 47 years old and you can sign up for the 45+
group (no points) or the 35+ group (points) but not both. You must specify this
on your rider release form and make sure the worker at registration knows what
you've signed up for.

5. There has been one change on the course that applies to all the races. As you
return to the finish, when you are heading south on Seven Pines Road you will
continue to go straight instead of turning right onto Cycle Plant Road. As you
continue to go south you will come to Highway 162 and turn right for a straight
shot back to the finish. This change eliminates a left turn, also gets rid of a
hidden spot at Butler Hill Road/Hwy. 162, and will be a lot safer for the
racers. It'll be faster, too. Remember, Cycle Plant Road will NOT be used for
the return. Go straight south on Seven Pines and right on 162. I'll send out a
revised map in a day or two.

6. There will be a couple of motorcycles or cars cruising the course looking for
anyone who bonks or needs a ride in. They'll call in for someone to come out to
pick the racer up. Since these courses are not repeated loops, it won't be as
easy for cyclists who have problems to come in right away.

7. This race will be hilly! Having a 23- or 25-tooth cog on your Zipp wouldn't
be such a bad thing. It can be done well enough in a 21 but ain't it nice to
have more options?

8. If you get dropped by the pack and the wheel vehicle passes you by, don't
feel lonely. But be alert when you come to intersections. The road is always
open to traffic and if you're not with the main group, you are obligated to slow
down at the turns and look for traffic unless a course marshall waves you
through. Many of the turns are marked with yellow arrows painted on the road or
with vertical signs with arrows. There should be course marshals at every
intersection or turn, but you have a responsibility to keep your head up and pay
attention to them and to the traffic around you!! This is just a district road
race (with medals and little money), it's not the world championships. Keep
everything in perspective here and be careful!

9. As always, volunteers are appreciated and if you or someone with you wants to
be part of the event as a volunteer, WE'LL TAKE 'EM!!

10. The finish line will be at the now-closed North Calvary Church about 200
meters east of Benton Elementary on Highway 162. When you cross the line, keep
going and turn into the parking lot right after your finish. GET OFF THE HIGHWAY
AS SOON AS YOU CAN!

11. Speaking of parking: please park in the gravel/grassy field across the
highway from Benton Elementary. This is the north side and park as far from the
road as you can so we don't get a bunch of cars crowded up near the entrance.
There's some nice big trees out there and they provide nifty shade, so head
towards them. Registration will be at that parking lot and so will the race
start. Trash cans will be at registration, too. Register as soon as you get
there, don't wait 'til the last minute. This is all day-of-race registration and
the line might be long.

Well, that's all I can think of for now. I hope you have fun and get a good
workout. I figured since this was a championship race, it should be on a tough
course and thanks to Terry Milam I think it is. It'll be up to you whether you
agree or not. Maybe Hodges is tougher, maybe not, but our roads will be better
(there are a few homages to Jon Anderson out there, you'll find them).

If you have any questions, please let me know. In the meantime, I'm waiting for
the race permit to arrive.............

Alan:

If the 35+ and 45+ riders are racing together, why would 45+ riders have to
forgo their district championship in order to be scored for the 35+ LCCS
points?

Record everyone's placing.
Sort on age group to get 30+, 35+ and 45+ overall age group placings.
Remove non-La/Ms riders to get championship 30+, 35+ and 45+ medal placings.
Sort combined 35+/45+ results to get LCCS placings.

Subject: [Northshore_Cyclists] Taillights

Just another safety note that I hope everyone will consider especially those of us who are doing the Tues/Thurs late afternoon rides and those of us doing early morning weekend rides.

It’s probably not a bad idea to consider visiting your favorite bike shop and purchasing a battery operated taillight. This past weekend we had some clouds at the start of the early morning rides so it was quite dark. Personally I felt exposed and unprotected riding in such low light conditions. The current generation of taillights for bicycles are all flashing LEDs, they are quite bright, and are small. They will really help others see you from a long distance and I believe will make motorists appreciative of our efforts to be more visible. The lights are cheap to purchase (usually $15-$20).

I’ll be visiting the Spokesman today and buying mine for this evening’s ride. Hope most of you will consider the same.

"It is vain to say human beings ought to be satisfied with tranquility; they
must have action; and they will make it if they cannot find it."
Charlotte
Bronte

It's CajunMan Triathlon time and district road race time in northwest Louisiana for competitive cyclists. Wow, what a weekend it will be for weekend racing warriors.

Rusty Bex, John Deshotel, Jerry Richard, and the incredible battalion of volunteers in Lafayette are working hard to make the CajunMan Triathlon one of the best yet. There are lots of updates and news notes on lafayettefitness.org about the CajunMan Tri, including a listing of pre-registered triathletes. Alan Moore has been working hard, too, with lots less resources to make the year-end cycling road races work. We can't do without dedicated race directors.

The real troopers at this weekend's events will volunteer the afternoon/evening before their racing events, then go to a collegiate football game, tune in to the 9 p.m. LSU football game being played in Arizona and party all night. Then and only then these troopers rise early to race and race hard the next day and finally volunteer to help race directors pack up the event. At least that's what Bo Bo Anderson says. He'll be working hard with the CajunMan Tri volunteers on Saturday afternoon, then juicing up to go see the Louisiana Tech vs. ULL football game at Cajun Stadium in Lafayette. Now, that's what I call multisporting. I don't know what options Alan Moore has for collegiate sports in northwest Louisiana before the USCF races in Benton.

Is this the week for the NOTC's bridge run?

Amid all the multisport activities going on, I dare not neglect the efforts
of so many on the north shore of Lake Ponchartrain to help long-time
multisporter Donnie Jarrell, who is fighting Lou Gehrig's disease. He's got
some powerful friends who have emotionally, physically, and financially
supported him and his family through a storm of medical challenges. At he
Elephant Walk Triathlon in Destin recently, he was awarded the Scott
Christmas award and gave what many describe as "an awesome
acceptance/motivational speech" leaving few dry eyes in the crowd.

Jarrell is one of those jewels in multisporting (great runner, cyclist, and
multisporter and not a bad swimmer either). His medical/physical challenges
he now faces is a reminder of how fleeting life can be and how much more we
all have to offer beyond the realms of mere fitness competition. Press on
Donnie!
LAMBRA would like to congratulate Mississippi rider Frank Moak of Herring Gas and Bain Foote of Twin City Cyclists based in Monroe for winning their categories with two events left on the calendar. http://www.lambra.org
Don't forget, the annual edition of the Louisiana Multisport Report production has begun. This is a printed magazine done once a year that ranks competitive cyclists, runners, swimmers, and multisporters on accomplishments during the calendar year. This is a labor of love done by a couple of guys in their off hours. If you're not sure whether you're on the U.S. mail list or if you've changed addresses, direct changes to dunawayoffice@... and include the note MSR Address List in the subject line with a line about why you are emailing the change. The magazine is sent free of charge in early February of 2004.

Also, any 2004 fitness event dates that have been set need to be submitted as soon as possible. There are already a number of 2004 dates set for fitness events. Remember race directors, he who hesitates to set a date loses the optimum dates!

Save Funding for Bicycle, Pedestrian Projects, Call Congress Today
From Bruce Wickert
If you have a few minutes, please make a phone call to let your congressman know that you support dedicated funding ($600M nation wide which is peanuts) for bicycle and pedestrian projects.  Call today or tomorrow, the vote is on Thursday for an amendment to strike Section 114 from HR 2989.

The U.S. capitol switchboard phone number is 202/224-3121, and for many of us in the BR area, our congressman is Richard Baker. For more material go to
info@...
On Thursday, Sept. 4th, the U.S. House of Representatives will vote on
the 2004 Transportation Appropriations bill. Currently, that bill contains
language which eliminates funding for the popular transportation
enhancements program, the major source of federal money for projects such
as multi-use paths, bike lanes and safety education efforts.

Two good friends of bicycling, Congressman Tom Petri (R-WI) and
Congressman John Olver (D-MA) will offer an amendment during debate on
Thursday to restore the funding.

Call your U.S. Representative today and ask him to support the amendment by
Petri (pron "PEE-try") and Olver to save the Enhancements program by
striking Section 114 of HR 2989. Make the call on Tuesday, Sept. 2 or
Wednesday, Sept. 3.

The main U.S. capitol switchboard is 202/224-3121. To figure out who represents
you, visit
http://econstituent.votenet.com/lab and type in your zip code
at the bottom. Call the Representative's Washington office.

Since 1991, the Enhancements program has built over 16,000
locally-initiated projects in communities across the country. For more
info, visit
www.americabikes.org.

Let's make some noise in Congress! Please call today and forward this
action alert to all friends of cycling.

Notes on Hotter 'n Hell 100
From Alan Moore <
amoore@...>
Just to let you know, Hotter'n'Hell doesn't have the USCF races anymore.
This is the second year they've not had them. They dropped them after USA
Cycling wouldn't upgrade the standing of their races even though they paid out
more money and had better attendance than some NRC events with higher
gradings. It's left some pretty sour feelings between the two groups.

But in regards to HHH, the only story I can tell you about is that one of
LaS'port's elite women racers, Jennifer Purcell of Dallas, finished 7th
overalland was the first woman to finish the 100-mile route. She had spent
10 days at SuperWeek in Wisconsin so her fitness level is right up there. But
since HHH is not a race now, she got no prizes for her accomplishment.

Sept. 20 Tour de Tangipahoa Bike Ride Notes
From Salty Galvis
I've done the Tour de Tangipahoa two or three times in prior years and
enjoyed it as an MS Tour tune-up.  However, since the Tangipahoa Parish
Council passed Ordinance No. 98-13, restricting the ability of cyclists to
ride in Tangipahoa, I've boycotted the event.  I was part of a
letter-writing campaign explaining to the promoters, the Hammond Kiwanis
Club, why I wasn't going to participate after the passage of the ordinance.

In recent years, another line of thought has been to ride in the event and
to show the Tangipahoa Parish Council why it should let cyclists back on its
roads without the restrictions currently in place -- no groups of more than
8 cyclists without first:  (1) posting the ride in the local paper 48 hours
in advance, (2) obtaining a permit from the parish permit office, and (3)
obtaining a police escort for the ride, all to be enforced with a fine of
$500 per person for violations (increased last year from $200).  However,
rather than rescind the ordinance, the parish beefed up the fine for
violations.  And if this year's MS Tour training rides are any indication of
how cyclists are going to behave on those group rides that involve many
infrequent riders who either don't know or don't care to abide by the
cycling laws, the odds are that the participating cyclists' conduct in the
event will not change any anti-cycling sentiment in Tangipahoa.

I'll pass on the Tour de Tangipahoa

Some Report League of American Bicyclists Becoming More Appealing
From Jack Bertel
After my accident, I decided it was about time that I join the League
of American Bicyclists, which I did.

Now that a vehicle in Texas has collided with a pack of riders and
killed two more cyclists, it is all the more reason to join the
League.  As an added motivation, I will match the $30.00 membership
fee for the first 25 members of our group that joins this year (email
me when you join).

Looking for USAT Officials for Louisiana
From Sam Houston Jones
I would like to re-emphasize how great an opportunity it is for Louisiana to get some
certified USAT officials Sept 20-21 in conjunction with the Meat Pie Triathlon in Natchitoches (the weekend LSU plays Georgia in football).

It's crazy that we don't have a single certified official in our state and I hope folks will consider participating in Natchitoches.
P.S.  Don't forget to start promoting the Ride for the Roses soon in your
newsletter:

Down Cyclists in Texas Sounds Like June 11, 2002 in Louisiana
From Richard Lamb

The above link will take you to the story regarding the lost of two of our
fellow cyclists. We had an accident today that included some of our family of
cyclists. Today during a ride in the Lake Jackson area, with Ruben S., Kenny
York, and Many More were hit by a Lady in a truck, she lost control and hit
the pack of riders. Kenny's close friend-she was life flight to Herman
Hospital. Two fellow cyclist were killed at the site. And many more were
injured, broken bones and broken skin and etc.As this happen we need to
always expect the unexpected, we can never be to careful.

I would like to ask for Pray for the many cyclist and their families that
were involved in this accident.

Hi all, I had a couple of points to add to this:

1. When you join the League, you get a free subscription to Bicycling
Magazine. So if you already subscribe or were thinking about
subscribing, for a few more dollars you can help out by joining the
League.

2. $20 of your membership is tax-deductible (more if you pay for a
family memberhsip). I know it's not much, but if you itemize on your
taxes, every bit helps.

I just joined last month, so I can't say I'm an expert about the
group, but it seems worthwile, and I would encourage you to check it
out.

Thanks,
Heather Tsihlis

Thank you to everyone who came out this weekend to the MFS Track Meet!
We were under threat of rain all morning but were spared until just after the results were tallied and prizes dispensed.
A special thanks to Brian Apsey and Alexis Luker who have become regulars at our track meets and provide excellent timing and officiating services.

Chris G.  made the trip all the way down from Jackson —maybe he’ll bring some of his buddies next time?

Everyone raced together and we sifted out the categories from the overall results.  William Cheramie (LSU) dominated the timed events in the absence of his usual rivals. He and Katrin Saile (MFS) set new standing lap records for the track. Combining categories made for an exciting points race with lots of action.   Our own junior, Dylan Jason (MFS), demonstrated his sprint to great effect after jumping onto what became the winning break. Ben Schuler (NOBC) raced an aggressive Unknown Distance opting to break away about halfway through only to be joined a few laps later by a couple hangers-on who then stole his thunder in the sprint.  The 4k Tag-Team pursuit is a new event designed as a safety conscious Madison.  Teams of two pursue each other ‘round the track while partners alternate resting and racing by tagging each other, holding hands, or for the timid, drawing even.  It was fun to watch and there is plenty of room for strategy in sparing your partner’s energy.  We’ll graduate to handslings eventually...

All racers managed to keep the rubber side down and all of the cake doughnuts were successfully consumed.

Only one more meet before the Championships!

I received a note from an eyewitness to Saturday's cycling tragedy in Brazoria Texas.  My heart goes out to not only the families of those who were killed, but to the anguish that those who survived are enduring.

The size of the group reminds me much of a Baton Rouge event.  Small, where participants know everyone and cannot imagine the possiblility of such a horrendous wreck.

Lightning has struck twice!

Brazoria Bicycle Accident — My Memories

The day before yesterday, Saturday, August 30, 2003, I was involved in a bicycling accident near Brazoria. I sustained a few scrapes and bruises, but all are minor physical injuries that will heal. Emotionally, I feel like someone tore my gut out. I have been riding with our local bike club for 19 years. I have seen some terrible accidents over that time, but never anything like this before. I have heard the accident scene described as grisly, unbelievable, an unspeakable tragedy, and a nightmare; however, words cannot truly depict the devastation and loss of life that my eyes witnessed.

The day started out like our typical Saturday mornings at the Lake Jackson Recreation Center. Twenty-one cyclists gathered and were chatting with each other in the parking lot. Kenny York introduced us to his girlfriend from Dallas, Amanda McDaniel. We left the parking lot at 7:30am with the sun shining down on us. Two doctors and a police officer were riding in our group. We were riding West on Highway 332. The road was dry until approaching the bridge that crosses the Brazos River into the town of Brazoria. There the road was wet from a small isolated shower that had passed through earlier, but the sun was still shining. Kenny and Amanda were laughing and talking in front of me as we rode under the bridge.

Within a second, the serenity of our Saturday morning ride was shattered. I heard a commotion at the front of our group and looked up to see a silver truck sliding sideways into our pace line. I tried to turn to the left to avoid the truck, but my tires slipped. I thought I was going to be hit by the truck as I fell down on my left side. As I slid down the pavement, another cyclist, Al Ochoa, ran into my leg and went down hard on the left of me. At the same time, I heard the dreadful noise of the truck spinning past my right side. Before I could stand up, I heard someone behind my left side calling 911. It was Billie Guidry telling them to send multiple ambulances. Andy Chang was directly behind me stopping traffic.

I looked around in total disbelief. The bicycles and riders that were in a neat pace line were now scattered on the road in front of me and in the ditch and field to my right. The truck came to rest behind my right side. I saw a huge dent in the side of the truck. There was someone lying between the truck and the bridge. It was Amanda. I didn't understand how she could be behind me. She was moving and someone was running up to her. I started looking at all the riders that were down. I noticed two riders just a few feet away to my immediate right. They were not moving. That's when I first started feeling something tearing at my gut.

As I stumble toward the rider nearest to me I felt a sense of panic because I had not seen my wife yet. I started shouting her name. Margie responded; she was safe on the left side of the road. I heard Lance Phy, the police officer riding with us, call for LifeFlight. I saw the doctors rushing to help. I knelt down next to the first motionless rider. I was shocked when I saw it was Jim Thomerson; he was gone. My mind did not want to believe what my eyes saw, but he was gone. A lady that stopped to help knelt down and began praying to God to save him, but he was gone. I looked over at the second motionless rider. It was Brian Delaney; he was gone. CPR, prayers, and tears could not revive them. Emergency Medical Technicians, followed by LifeFlight, arrived within minutes, but Jim and Brian were gone.

I just couldn't believe it. In the blink of an eye, two skilled riders; two good men; they were gone. It happened so fast, I wondered if they even knew what hit them. After tending to Kelton Thomson, Margie came over to me to and gently pulled me away from Jim so the EMTs and DPS Officers could do their job. I didn't want to leave Jim's side. I didn't want to accept that I couldn't do anything save him. The hard reality was no one could do anything to bring Jim or Brian back; they were gone. Andy Parker, an Episcopal minister, led us in a prayer over each of them.

I watched the doctors, EMTs, and DPS Officers do their jobs. They took care of the other injured riders. Al and Kelton were on there way to Brazosport Memorial Hospital. Amanda was on LifeFlight going to Hermann Hospital. Lance was helping the other officers with the accident investigation. I felt a profound sense of respect for these professionals and the work they have to do every day to try to save lives. It must be hard to have a job where you have to deal with human frailty and vulnerability so frequently. By the disturbed looks on the faces of those professionals working the scene, it must be very hard.

One of our friends, John Wood, heard about the accident and drove over to see if he could help. He loaded Margie's bike and my bike into the back of his truck to take us back to Lake Jackson. As we drove away, I saw a black hearse pulling up to the accident scene. It hit me hard that Jim and Brian would not be going home to their wives and daughters. My heart ached for their families. My gut felt like it had been wrenched out of me. Although I have had to deal with the loss of loved ones in the past, I have never been a witness to such a tragic and senseless loss of life. The sun was still shining, but it was one of the darkest days of my life.

Attached is the main map for the road race course in Benton this weekend. It
features the Cat. 4 and Cat. 1-2-3 courses but covers the same roads that the
other category/classification races are on. The only change is in the return.
When you get on Seven Pines Road you will continue STRAIGHT to Highway 162 and
make a right turn there. It's then a straight shot back to the finish with some
rolling hills but nothing as difficult as what you'll have already done. All the
races will return this way (except for a couple of Junior races). You can
compare the other maps sent out earlier but that return is the only change.

Again, stay alert while on your bike. There are several left-hand turns
(couldn't avoid that or you would have had a much easier course) and even with
course marshalls and some deputies manning them, you still need to keep your
head up and look. If you've been spit off the back and are separated from the
main field, you really need to pay attention.

There are some dogs on the course and many of them have been trained not to go
into the road. But they still run out to the edge and bark. There are one or two
others who do get on the road but we don't know who their owners are. If you've
done the Natchez Classic RR stage in the past, then you know what I mean.
Usually a large pack will intimidate them.

I hope you enjoy the course for the challenges it represents. So far it's gotten
good marks from those who've ridden it for the first time in the last couple of
weeks. And even though I won't be racing, I've logged my share of miles on it!
It's also pretty out there if you get a chance to see it through the mind-fogged
haze clouding your eyes! :)

Missy,

Attagirl!  Your letter was terrific, forceful and to the point.  I'm glad to hear that Clear Channel Communications took the actions it did, and also that the airplay of Walton and Johnson's program after the Texas accident was not a new broadcast of the same criminal and offensive message those guys issued some time ago.

Here is my letter and the reply I got after I wrote to Vince Richards about the Clear Channel radio program.
Missy

September 3, 2003

Dear Melissa,

First of all, let me personally apologize to you for the irresponsible comments made by our morning hosts Walton and Johnson.  I could go into a long explanation how they feel they were taken out of context and were trying to be humorous.

The bottom line is "perception is reality" and the reality is something was said that is inappropriate and could potentially lead to someone being seriously hurt or worse.  That was never the intention of our hosts and it is not the type of comments KLOL or this company would ever condone.

After being reprimanded by our Rock PD Vince Richards, Walton and Johnson went on the air the very next day and apologized for their remarks.  In addition, Vince and I personally responded to every e-mail and phone call we received to make sure people knew how seriously we view this incident, that action was taken and that we are very responsible broadcasters.

After this occurred, Vince spoke with the programs producer and told him to destroy the tape and never use it on KLOL again.  This was to make sure it was not accidentally included in another program or station promotion. After the apology both of us hoped that would be the end of this situation.

Then Tuesday, during Walton and Johnson's vacation, this same producer aired a "best of" program and the original incident, which was supposedly to be gone, was part of the program.  This show was not approved by our program director and would not have been allowed on the air had a tape been known to exist.  Trust me when I tell you we are totally embarrassed and quite upset.

The producer in question has been terminated from his position with KLOL and Clear Channel.  This type of insubordination and irresponsibility will not be tolerated.  Again, we take our commitment to our community and our responsibility as broadcasters very seriously.  I hope these actions demonstrate that to you.

Again, let me apologize and thank you for giving me the opportunity to answer your concerns personally.

Best Regards,

Mark Kopelman

Regional Vice President/ General Manager

Clear Channel Houston

Dear Mr. Richards:

I can take a joke.   In fact I often play practical jokes on my friends.  Most of my friends are cyclists.  When I heard what your dj's said about encouraging motorists to take action against cyclists I did not laugh.  I was disgusted.  2 people were just killed in Texas in a tragic accident where a motor vehicle crossed over the center line into the opposite lane and struck a paceline of some 20 cyclists.  One person was airlifted to try to save her life.  Is that funny to you?  Two people were killed in Baton Rouge a year ago in a similar situation.  Would you laugh if a mother of  3 small children were killed in a motor vehicle accident?   I wouldn't.  I am a wife and a mother of three small boys ages 6,4 and 3.  I drive a car everyday.  I also happen to be a cyclist.  My kids need me.  I have a legal right to ride my bike on the roads.  If there were bike lanes where I live, believe me, I'd use them.   There are not.  I am currently training for an ironman triathlon.  I need to ride my bike over 100 miles at a time to train for this event.   It is because of programs like the one you allow on the air that I fear for my life at times when I am out on my bike.

It is your responsibility to have these dj's correct their mistake.  There are a lot of idiots out there who listened to your dj's and will try to hit cyclists with the side view mirrors now.  When a cyclist gets struck from the side like that, he or she is almost sure to go down.  Anytime a cyclist goes down doing 21-27 miles per hour, he or she will be hurt.  Road rash is for certain, broken bones probable, and death is quite possible.  Would you condone people driving their cars and striking pedestrians with side view mirrors?  No.  Why is it funny to hit cyclists?  I don't get this joke.  Please...enlighten me.  Right now my stomach aches just thinking about what will probably happen in the Houston area next thanks to you.

Hoping you'll do the right thing...may I suggest making your dj's ride bikes to work everyday for a month?

I'd like to second Randy's sentiments and add my
thanks to Alan and everyone who worked to promote the
racing this weekend.

I had to wait til my last race of the year to make my
annual 'Southern Sojourn' to race with the folks back
home, and I wasn't disappointed.

After having suffered through the weather in St. Louis
the previous weekend for the Gateway Cup races, I was
concerned about the weather, but couldn't have been
happier with the way things turned out.

I've also got to add one thing: I live and race in
Colorado now, and we seem to take things too seriously
up here. It's been a long time since I've seen such
unbridled enthusiasm and sheer joy at winning as what
was displayed by Jerry Simon after the masters' event
Saturday. Reminded me what it SHOULD be all about.

Way to go, Jerry, and thanks for helping put it back
in perspective!

till next spring, when I hope to finally make it for
Rouge-Roubaix.

Scott

Sept. 10, 2003
"Here hath been dawning another blue day; think, wilt thou let it slip
useless away?"
Thomas Carlyle

Rusty Bex and Alan Moore did fine jobs on orchestrating their respective
events. Rusty put on what many said was the best CajunMan Triathlon he's
presented in Lafayette and Alan seems to have had a great turn out for his
district road races for competitive cyclists. Way to go guys.

I found it interesting that the top four overall winners at the CajunMan
Triahtlon are over age 40! There was an impressive list of 60+ triathletes
with equally impressive times in the event as well. Three cheers to
lafayettefitness.org for having CajunMan Triathlon results posted early on
the afternoon of the morning event. That's service.

Don't forget that USA Triathlon board member election ballots are due via
U.S. mail by Nov. 1, that's the day after Halloween. I myself am campaigning
for Bill Burke of Metairie for the central region on the board. Do consider
him for your vote and do take time if you're a multisporter to cast your
vote. For a PDF version of the ballot go to usatriathlon.org. Following
mailing instructions on the ballot and do not send to the USA Triathlon
office.

Speaking of voting, I hope all of you eligible voters are indeed registered
to vote and planning on voting in upcoming fall elections. As we've all
seen, we in our hobby/lifestyles of fitness pursuits absolutely cannot
afford to be politically indifferent and uninvolved. We need to let
politicians know that we are voters and that we can have an electoral impact
on what goes on in the political racing scene.

Thanks, too, to all of you who called your Congressmen to let ask them to
support the legislation that provided funding for bicycle and pedestrian
projects, studies, and programs. The legislation passed and many Louisiana
Congressmen supported the bill. I don't remember all those who supported the
bill; I do remember that Billy Tauzin and David Vitter did not support the
bill.

I am continuing to put together the 2004 Louisiana Multisport Report
calendar. There are lots of dates stacking up already. So, all you race
directors let me hear from you as I put together a master fitness event
calendar for 2004. I'll be sending out advertising information on the
printed edition of our annual Louisiana Multisport Report soon. If you've
got events, products or services to advertise, I do hope you will consider
our annual printed publication that comes out in late January, 2004 and gets
to about 10,000 fitness folks in Louisiana.

The Pelicanman Duathlon on Sept. 21 is included in the 2003
Shockwave Series.

Can anyone confirm Thanksgiving Day 5km runs taking place around the state? I know Shreveport, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans typically have events on turkey day, but I've seen no official announcements.

Has everyone signed up the Meat Pie Triathlon in Natchitoches yet. It's going to be a great triathlon in the northwestern part of the state. You've got time to see LSU play Georgia in football in the afternoon, drive to Natchitoches, see the football game there at Northwestern State University, then rise early to race the triathlon the oldest settlement in the Louisiana Purchase. Check with Elizabeth Cassano in Alexandria for details.

Keep those 2004 fitness event dates coming; the calendar is packing up already. Email them to me for publication in printed edition of the Louisiana Multisport Report.

MS Tour Rides Get Kudos

From Danny Daniel
Kudos to the MS crew on a good bike tour from Hammond to McComb and back.
The recently held ride was well organized and well maintained. I've only heard of
a few incidents of stupidity on the part of riders. The rest was all praise.
Y'all did a good job staggering the start. That allowed people to ride with
their own skill levels. Almost everyone rode single file....many even
learned about the benefits of drafting! Your rest-stop personnel are
fantastic. Y'all are actually teaching riders how to share the road safely
with motor vehicles and other riders. I know that the MS tour rides are your
primary source of income and without it, there would be no MS Society.
Yesterday's improvements went a long way towards insuring your future.

Pedal Play's Poker Ride Bike Tour Set
From Jon Anderson
Cyclists can sign up online, mail in, or arrive a few minutes early and
sign up on Saturday, Sept.13th.  Please consider donating a couple of
extra bucks -- every penny we raise goes directly to Tracey Seiden in memory
of slain cyclist Steve Seiden who was tragically killed on June 11, 2002 on
River Road just south of the LSU Campus. Contributions really makes a
difference for a single mom rearing a new-bornn babe. Complete ride info at
www.batonrougecycling.com.

Pedal Play's Bicycle Poker Run  includes routes 5, 25, 40, 62, and 100 miles
throughout the Felicianas just north of Baton Rouge in the St. Francisville
and Woodville, MS areas. This year's event is held to honor the memory of
two of our friends -- Timmy Cappo (Miles for Smiles Racing) and Steve Seiden
(Red Stick Racers) -- who left us on June 11, 2002. One hundred percent of the event
proceeds willbe donated to Steve's son "Steven Benjamin Richard Seiden" who was
born on June 12, 2002.

Join us at the St. Francis Hotel on the Lake located in St.
Francisville for a day or riding, laughter, music, and a little bit
of poker. The routes (suitable for riders from beginner to expert)
explore the scenic rolling hills and lightly traveled back roads that
wind throughout the Feliciana Parishes. Our event features a
poker run format. Meaning that at each of the designated stops you
draw a card (five cards total).  After the ride, the best hand wins!
The winner -- who must be present to win -- will take home a brand new road
bike provided by Pedal Play Bicycles. In the case of a
tie, the winner will be selected from among those with the best hands
by a single hand of five-card-stud poker-winner takes all.

Registration is $30. We encourage all riders to make an
additional donation. Your entry fee includes route maps, cue sheets,
SAGs, and the post ride party featuring a picnic on the lawn of the

Velodrome Report from 9th Race in Series
From Josie Babin
Thank you to everyone who came out two weekends ago to the MFS velodrome track meet. We were under threat of rain all morning but were spared until just after the results were tallied and prizes dispensed. A special thanks to Brian Apsey and Alexis Luker who have become regulars at our track meets and provide excellent timing and officiating services.

Everyone raced together and we sifted out the categories from the overall
results. William Cheramie (LSU) dominated the timed events in the absence of
his usual rivals. He and Katrin Saile (MFS) set new standing lap records for
the track. Combining categories made for an exciting points race with lots
of action.  Baton Rouge's own junior Dylan Jason (MFS) demonstrated his
sprint to great effect after jumping onto what became the winning break. Ben
Schuler (NOBC) raced an aggressive "Unknown Distance" opting to break away
about halfway through only to be joined a few laps later by a couple
hangers-on who then stole his thunder in the sprint. The 4km "Tag-Team"
pursuit is a new event designed as a safety conscious Madison. Teams of two
pursue each other 'round the track while partners alternate resting and
racing by tagging each other, holding hands, or for the timid, drawing even.
It was fun to watch and there is plenty of room for strategy in sparing your
partner's energy. We'll graduate to handslings eventually....

All racers managed to keep the rubber side down and all of the cake
doughnuts were successfully consumed.

additional donations, and sponsorship dollars) will be donated to
Steve's son "Steven Benjamin Richard Seiden" who was born on June 12,

Dear Racers,
Not so much of a race report... rather than a "thank you".
Thanks to my team for leaving me out there, up the road to bake... alone. For 20 KM.
Thanks to Alan Moore for having all the worst hills in those last 20KM.
Thanks to Frank and Chris Alexander for repeatedly telling me over the radio that I just had just 2 miles to go when is was actually much much further. Liars.
Thanks to all the people and shit going on in my life that has allowed me only 10 days on my bike in the last month and a half. That made those 82+ miles quite comfortable.
Thanks to all the gremlins, flats and tough competition that were ever present during my previous 15 attempts to win the state title.
Thanks to all the other racers who raced on Sunday and took for granted that no solo break with Kenny ever succeeds. I was starting to think the same thing. :-)

It was actually quite a race. Gary Z took off in the first mile or 2. Stayed away, mostly alone for 6miles. He had at some points more than 3 minutes on the ever attacking pack. Long time to be alone. Several counter attacks went when he was finally pulled back in. I think it was more like Gary just sitting up than us actually gaining ground on an angry G-unit. Anyway, I could tell that most in the pack were tiring, including myself. This was only my 3rd time of the year riding more than 65 miles. However, I was feeling pretty strong on the hills. That's where I went off, thinking I'd be back in time to see Troy or Tim take off for the final miles. The gap kept shrinking and growing... by design. I would take it easy heading up ta hill, then push it really hard, up and over and somewhat attack on the down hills. I guess it workedBut I was hurting more than I ever have. I have never won the state RR, nor any RR off the front solo. I work better in groups. The last mile felt like my fastest, since I could see the finish line from about 2 miles away. I pushed it as hard as I ever have. Legs were cramping and stinging, and I was out of water. I finished with about 30 seconds between me and the sprint. Great feeling tdo so well against so many riders whothis year, seem to be faster than ever. Thanks again to everyone thapushed me. This was a great SMOOTH course. Challenging, fair to all, at times confusing and a lot of fun. Thanks!

Never give up,
Kenny

I read in the Morning World newspaper where the Monroe Race for the Cure 5km
was held last weekend in northeast Louisiana and drew a field of more than
3,000 runners and walkers. Does anyone know when the Shreveport, Houma or Thibodaux Race
for the Cure events will be held?

Plans for the Baton Rouge Beach Marathon are well underway. Stay tuned for
details. Also, Rusty Ex is recovering just enough from a successful
CajunMan Triathlon to get ready for the Lafayette Half Marathon on the first
weekend in December. Details are available at lafayettefitness.org.

Club South Runners based in Baton Rouge announced its Octoberfest 3 Miler
for Oct. 4 at 5:30 p.m. at Mockler Beverage headquarters off I-10 via Siegen
Lane and Industriplex in the capital city area.

I am still looking for 2004 fitness dates as the annual printed edition of
the Louisiana Multisport Report comes together. Don't forget to keep me
updated on any physical address changes so you can get the magazine free as
it's been U.S. mailed for the past 10 years to everyone who's indicated an
interest in getting it.

Three cheers to Jon Anderson for his Pedal Play Poker Run bike tour for
raising thousands of dollars to continue honoring two Baton Rouge cyclists
slain on the River Road just south of Baton Rouge on June 11, 2002. His fund
raising continues to honor the late Steve Seiden and Tim Cappo who were
tragically killed while riding.

Three cheers also to all the Team Earthquake guys and gals who've raised thousands of dollars to help world-class
multisporter Donnie Jarrell fight Lou Gehrig's disease. The Team
Earthquakers based on the Northshore turned out en masse for the Poker Run
bike tour in the Felicianas to ride about 103 miles on Saturday, then turned right around
headed home and put on another of the many, many fund raisers for their
friend Donnie Jarrell. This group is testimony to what a true
triathlon/multisport club should be doing as they so much more than just
swim, bike, and run together -- they give unity as a group new meaning.

Also the Baton Rouge triathlon group continues to put together a nice web site, thanks to Susan Hayden. Check it out at batonrougetri.com.

Brett Faulk of Lafayette says the competitive cyclists year-long race points have been updated following the district road race. He noted that the Category 4 race did not count for points since it did not meet the minimum field requirement.

GatorMan Triathlon Participation Low So Far; USAT Not Helping
From Barry Laningham
Entries for the Gatorman Triathlon set for the end of the month in Lake Charles are way down. Survival depends on more entries coming in over these next few days. In order to stimulate more late registrations, I have dismissed the late fees. Interference from the age group race the following weekend in Shreveport has severely hurt the Gatorman. This is the USAT National Sprint and Relay Championship. How often do you get two national championships within driving distance. Do both races and you will really boost your rankings, nationally and regionally. Spread the word.

USAT Officials Clinic Set Sept. 20 for Natchitoches with Meat Pie Triathlon
From Elizabeth Cassano
The Meat Pie Festival and Meat Pie Tri coming up in Natchitoches should
bring much fun and excitement. I want to take this opportunity to say thank
you to all of the participants and sponsors
of the USAT Officials Clinic. Without the generous contributions of USAT,
Lake Charles Triathletes, CajunMan, Louisiana Triathlon, Indian Creek
Triathlon, Meat Pie Tri and Ed Cheatham, this event would not be possible.
The race directors from these races will need you next year! We are counting
on you to support the sport of triathlon! Please feel free
to reach me via cell if necessary at 318/613-8782.
From Ed Cheatham
The USAT Officials Clinic is set for Saturday Sept. 20th at noon at the
Tourism Office in Natchitoches. It will probably last about five hours. I'll
try to make it as painless as possible. Personally, I usually enjoy them. It
is always interesting to see what someone else comes up with. I like a
relaxed informal atmosphere.

Clinic participants will need an officials manual which is available on the internet, which
you need to bring. You also need to download the exam
to fill out and bring to the clinic. This will ensure that you have at least
read through the rules once. Of course like anything else, the more homework
you do, the more meaningful the classroom experience. Please let me know if I can help any of you before the
clinic. I'll be leaving here noon Friday. See you real soon.

For Sale

I have an 18 foot Jeanautica Sea Kayak that I bought about three years ago for
paddling in the lake and the rivers around here. I'm selling it because
I just don't use it enough and it sits on a trailer under a storage shed
collecting dust. Pictures of the boat are attached to this e-mail.

This is a fiberglass boat built in Italy. It weighs 40 lbs. It is a
"sit-in" boat where you use a skirt. The boat is quite fast and is
manueverable enough that it does not require a rudder. The boat is
outfitted with adjustable foot pegs and includes a seat. There is a
forward and aft bulkhead that form compartments for storage of gear.
This boat could be used as a touring kayak for day trips and overnight
trips. The boat is intended for the intermediate to advanced paddler as
a novice may find it a bit unstable at first.

I am selling the boat for $1,400. This includes a skirt and a launching
dolly but does not include a paddle. I do have a beautiful wood Silver
Creek paddle made in Bryson City, NC that I could sell with the boat for
another $100.

This might be a great boat for some of you interested in adventure
racing where kayaking is one of the events.

You can contact me via e-mail or phone at 985/871-9480 if you are
interested.

Do you enjoy pedaling down the road with safety on your side?

Would you like to encourage others to ride as safely as you?

Would you like to stop reading about cycling tragedies such as Baton Rouge River Road June 11, or more recently in Brazoria Texas?

Part of the process is safe facilities, part of the process is driver education, but the biggest part of the process is our behavior as cyclists on the road.

On this past weekend's poker run in St. Francisville I witnessed running of stopsigns at busy intersections, riding 4 abreast across the road extending beyond the centerline, and stopping in the roadway.  All of these are unsafe behaviors that we must not do ourselves, and insist that co-riders do the same.  The penalty is more wrecks, disrespect from more of the driving public, and possibly legislation limiting us to bikepaths.

Most of you know these things already, but how do we teach the new riders that we want to join us on the road before they become statistics?

To build the best habits to ride your bike safely on the road, and pass them on to future riders, the Louisiana DOTD teamed with the Baton Rouge Recrecation and Parks Commission (BREC) to offer FREE training (TABS).

When you are through, you will have passed the LAB classes, and be qualified as an instructor.  The biggest cost is your time, the biggest benefit is more safe riders on the road, and fewer tragic statistics.

Want to help?  See the information below about locations and dates, and contact Misty Montgomery of BREC who is coordinating this state wide effort.

Teaching Adults Bicycle Safety

Department of Transportation & Development &
East Baton Rouge Parish Parks & Recreation

DOTD and BREC are offering an opportunity for cyclists who want to encourage bicycling statewide and teach bicycling by becoming League of American Bicyclists Cycling Instructors. Participants who agree to teach cycling classes in their home town will be supplied with all training and class materials. The program will be taught in two steps:

Step 1 - (Road I Course, a League of American Bicyclists BikeEd program)

This is a big weekend for mountain bikers.

Saturday we plan a night ride:  Meet at Comite at 7pm, the trails are perfect!

Sunday the X-Trail Shoot Out Time Trial starts at 10am.  Registration begins at 8am.  This will be a GREAT event for riders and spectators alike; so come on out and compete, or watch riders bounce off trees trying to set a fast time on this difficult, short course.  This is a bare bones race, entry is $5 per lap.

Sunday afternoon we plan our second Hundred Rider Ride.  Meet at Comite at 1PM for the biggest group ride you ever saw!  Don't worry, we will split up into smaller groups with rides for everyone including kids, beginners, and experts.  We plan some field events, and there is not entry fee.  This will be a perfect opportunity to introduce someone to mountainbiking.

Remember, helmets are required by BREC and BRAMBA at all events.

See ya there!
