Top Ten New Rules for Racing in Mexico
Mistie Bibbee

10. It is not acceptable to race a dog on the track unless it has paid NASCAR’s entry fee.

9. DW’s “Boogity Boogity Boogity” will now be replaced with Speedy Gonzalez’s “¡Arriba, arriba, arriba, ándale, ándale, ándale!”

8. The track’s name will be change from Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez to Watkin’s Glen- Southern Annex in order to gain more acceptance with the fans.

7. If you qualified on the front row but have to go to the rear of the field due to an engine change, it is now OK for a competitor’s crew chief to knee you in the groin because you are an evil engine changer.

6. If DW is going to lose his voice each time NASCAR goes to Mexico, the entire season will be run down there.

5. Lysol will be the next official sponsor of a race in Mexico if the track continues to insist on selling burritos.

4. No sombreros allowed in the grandstands. It blocks the view of the person behind you.

3. The prize money will be in pesos in the future due to the excellent exchange rate.

2. Unlike at ISC tracks, it’s highly recommended that you bring your own water into the track.

1. Instead of hiring the guards to escort the haulers from the border to the track the real race will be to let the cars loose to see who can make it from the border to the track and back on their own.

Comments from the Peanut Gallery

from RD
To me this is very disappointing.  What no one is hearing is "how much were the tickets", " how much were the concessions", and "how much were the souvenirs"!

From what I've heard general admission tickets were around 180 Dollars, not pesos, for the weekend, or per day of the weekend, not sure.  The seats went for around 300 and up.   You can bet your ass NASCAR lined it's pockets,  isn't that what a major corporation is supposed to do?   There is talk that the purse although second largest in Busch history was not enough, to offset cost for teams going down there. Look for that to be remedied before next season's trip to Mexico.   I hear also that Cup won't be going down there any time soon, at least until they revamp the current schedule, because Cup just can't do any more races per season.  I guess that is where Pocono going away comes in.

NASCAR adds skirt flaps to make Trucks more stable
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The Craftsman Truck Series rule book has been amended to require body extension panels and larger cowl flaps beginning with the March 18 World Financial Group 200 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, NASCAR officials announced Thursday.

The rule changes, according to Craftsman Truck Series Director Wayne Auton, give teams the opportunity to reduce costs and improve the handling of their race trucks. The amendments follow recent wind-tunnel tests conducted by NASCAR.

"Evaluation of our rules is an ongoing process based upon NASCAR's three principles -- assisting our teams reduce costs, foster close competition and safety," Auton said. "Addition of the skirt flaps will enable our competitors to utilize the same truck on a more varied configuration of tracks.

"Following incidents involving several trucks during our race at Daytona International Speedway last month, NASCAR felt it necessary to explore a number of avenues to make the trucks more stable and driveable. The rule changes are an outgrowth of this research and testing."

Under Section 20-B-3.6 of the rule book, all trucks will be required to install a vertical extension -- side skirt -- flush with the outer sheet metal at the bottom, on both the right and left rocker panels. The extensions must be the same length front to rear as the rocker panel, cut only for exhaust and jack clearance with a minimum of four inches ground clearance on the right side and three inches of ground clearance on the left side.

The lower edge of the extension may be constructed of a plastic type material.

Rule 20-B-5.12.2 has been amended to increase the size of the truck's cowl flaps -- two trap doors, hinged at the front in a way that the wind will keep them closed when the truck is moving forward -- from two inches by 10 inches to four inches by 15 inches.

Georgia NASCAR Plates moving along: Georgia state lawmakers are trying to make it official, giving the green light Thursday to NASCAR-themed license plates for Georgia motorists. Sen. Chip Rogers (R-Woodstock) said a constituent driving through Mississippi noticed a Dale Earnhardt tag there and asked him to bring them to Georgia. Senate Bill 168 would allow Georgians to choose from about 40 plates featuring drivers, including the late champion Earnhardt and racing legend Richard Petty. If the House agrees, the plates would cost $25 and be available beginning in January. Passage in the House shouldn't be a problem: It approved a resolution Thursday making every April 29 Dale Earnhardt Day in Georgia.(Atlanta Journal-Constitution)

Kenny Wallace Wins $50,000 for Autism in Poker Tournament:  If NASCAR driver Kenny Wallace gets any luckier, then he should find a way to bottle his good fortune and sell it. Wallace, one of the most visible drivers in the sport, won the Mobil High-Endurance Poker Challenge at the Golden Nugget. His treasure chest was $50,000, which he donated to the Autism Society of America. “It’s pretty incredible to win $50,000 in Vegas playing poker,” Wallace said. “Then to turn around and give it to the Autism Society of America just gives me goose bumps.” Wallace and Shane Wilson, crew chief for Nextel Cup driver Travis Kvapil, were the final competitors. Wallace placed two pairs, twos and sevens, on the table and walked away the winner after five hours of poker. Wallace advanced to the championship by defeating the five other motorsports personalities at his table in the first round of the tournament. He was one of six competitors in the championship round. Wallace will drive the Stacker 2 Ford in Saturday’s Sam’s Town 300 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He is ranked eighth in the NASCAR Busch Series Drivers’ Standings. - Keystone Marketing Co., Inc.

Harvick is a certified 'Busch-whacker'

Kevin Harvick has been there/done that in NASCAR's Busch Series, where he already is a driver's champion and helped secure an owner's points title.

That accumulated knowledge is reflected in Harvick's super start to the 2005 Busch Grand National season. With three consecutive second-place finishes in as many races, Harvick has emerged as the points leader (515-454) over fellow Cup regular Carl Edwards.

Harvick plans to run 20 of 35 Busch Series races in the No. 21 Chevrolet fielded by Richard Childress Racing, with protégé Brandon Miller entered in the other 15. The No. 33 Kevin Harvick Inc. Chevy co-owned by Harvick and his wife, DeLana, won the series' season opener at Daytona International Speedway last month with former Cup champion Tony Stewart at the wheel.

"We're a little bit hungry to win for ourselves," said Harvick, who is defending champion of the Sam's Town 300 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Saturday. "For my own race team, myself and DeLana, to go out the first race of the season that we're going to attempt to run all year and win the race is something that's pretty cool. Tony is a big part of that. We couldn't have done it without him."

Stewart's victory snapped Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s impressive three-race winning streak in the opener on the high-banked, 2.5-mile Daytona trioval. Harvick finished second there and in the subsequent event at the 2-mile California Speedway. And Harvick was runner-up to reigning BGN champion Martin Truex Jr. of the Dale Earnhardt Inc. stable on the 2.518-mile Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez road course in Mexico City on Sunday. The event was NASCAR's first points-paying race outside the United States.

Harvick, whose Busch team made its first two starts in 2004, has hired Tony Raines to drive 25 races in his Monte Carlo.

Meanwhile, as driver of the No. 29 Chevy fielded by Childress in the Nextel Cup Series, Harvick said there will be no second-guessing about points once he turns the BGN car over to Miller, a fellow Californian.

Recall that Harvick won the Busch Series driver's title in 2001 for Childress. And Harvick and Johnny Sauter combined to give Childress the owner's championship in 2003.

"It's hard to give up the keys and say, 'Here you go,' when you've gotten off to such a great start," Harvick said. "But we've got to keep our eye on the prize, and that's the Nextel Cup car. That's the big-picture plan."

Around the Track: Las Vegas
Jeff Burton puts you in the driver's seat at Las Vegas Motor Speedway
As told to Lee Montgomery, NASCAR.COM

Las Vegas Motor Speedway is a 1.5-mile trioval with 12-degree banking in its four turns. Turns 1 and 2 are symmetrical and Turns 3 and 4, quite different both from each other and from the other pair. There's a 1,572-foot backstretch and a long, curving 2,275-foot frontstretch with nine-degree banking at the start/finish line, which is located midway between Turns 4 and 1.

The track is part of the Speedway Motorsports family of venues, though it resembles none of them.

I think of winning when I think of Las Vegas, because I've won there an awful lot -- in Cup in 1999 and 2000; and 2000 and 2002 in the Busch Series, when I won from the pole.

I really like that racetrack -- it's one of my favorite tracks. It's a really fun racetrack and it's a track that most drivers like. It has pretty good grip, but not so much grip that you just drive around there, wide open.

You've really got to modulate the throttle and handling means everything. It's just a real fun racetrack.

For qualifying, Vegas is a track at which you can get real aggressive on springs and shocks. It's a fairly smooth track, but just off the middle of Turns 3 and 4 there's a big bump right there and you've got to have a shock package that works well there.

Yet again, it's one of those tracks that's kind of flat, but it's a big, fast racetrack where you've got to be in the gas a lot. It's not a real fast-feeling racetrack, but you've got to be in the gas and the car's got to respond.

It's a fun track to qualify on.

When I say we're getting aggressive on the shock package, it's really an aerodynamic trick anymore. It's all about getting the car as low as you can without hitting the racetrack and getting everything working while it's on the ground.

It's just so much an aerodynamic world, right now. You've got to get the front of the car down and the back of the car up and Vegas is a place where it's difficult to do that because handling is so important here.

So if you hit it right, it really helps, but if you hit it wrong it really hurts you, because you have to be able to do it.

In race mode there's definitely several different grooves at Vegas. The second groove has really come into prominence here lately. I think, with the new spoiler rules the second groove is going to be that much more important.

I think that if you get up on the outside of somebody they're dead. I don't think they'll be able to hang in there with you because they won't have enough air on their car.

So I think the outside groove is going to be really important at Vegas, more than we've ever seen it.

As far as thinking about pit strategy, Vegas is a track that really slickens up. It's a track at which you lose a lot of grip and the cars don't handle as well as you want them to.

It's a tough little racetrack, so I do believe that short pitting will be the order of the day. If you get yourself in trouble not running as well as you need to, the crew chief is going to be very tempted to get on pit road before the leader does and try to get that track position back.

I think you'll see that more at Vegas -- really, really a lot. The tire wear isn't that bad but the fall-off in speed is extraordinary so I think you'll see a lot of short pitting.

We've had a lot of success at Las Vegas, as I've said, but I don't really know why that is. We just took off running well here right off the bat, with Mark (Martin) winning the first race, and we won the next two.

The race that Mark won, we finished second or third or something. Just for some reason, we've always run well there. Matt (Kenseth) picked up on that and he's won the last two out here.

The cars always handled well, they drove well and they fit what we were doing. The track was big enough where handling was huge and we just out-handled most people, and that was the whole key to it.

We had early success at Las Vegas and that let us build on that and change and keep evolving to stay on top of the game.

But having said that, with the way everything has evolved into an aero war, it's totally different now.

There's almost nothing that we won with then, that we could run now. But that's not a bad thing. Evolution in our sport is a good thing and we've got to find a way to keep up and of course be ahead of it.

But it definitely takes different stuff than it did in past years.

Jeff Burton, driver of the No. 31 Cingular Chevrolet, will take fans Around the Track each race week during the 2005 Nextel Cup season.

Junior facing crucial race Sunday at Las Vegas
Earnhardt Jr. 14th in points going to track he struggled on last year
By Mike Harris, The Associated Press

It's only the third week of the NASCAR Nextel Cup season and Dale Earnhardt Jr. already is facing a crucial test heading into Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

After a solid third-place finish in the season-opening Daytona 500, fan favorite Earnhardt had a terrible day two weeks ago at California Speedway, blowing three tires and hanging on for a 32nd-place finish.

That dropped Junior to 14th in the standings, 103 points behind series leader and reigning Cup champion Kurt Busch. Not so bad with 34 races to go, but the 1.5-mile Las Vegas oval was one of Earnhardt's worst venues last year. He started 26th and fought an ill-handling car all the way to a 35th-place finish.

Earnhardt, working well with new crew chief Pete Rondeau, said he is not feeling any extra pressure heading into Sunday's UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400.

"It wasn't much fun driving around with tires blowing out all day (at California), but that's what happened and it's behind us," Earnhardt said. "Nobody said it was going to be a cakewalk, but we're going to get better because of what happened.

"I was real happy the way Pete and all the guys handled the situation. Pete had me calm and chilled out at a time when I probably would've lost focus and been all over the place. I like that about him."

Earnhardt, who finished fifth in the points last year after being in contention for the title until the final race, started 2005 with a big question mark after he and Dale Earnhardt Inc. teammate Michael Waltrip swapped teams.

Earnhardt got the unproven Rondeau, the rest of Waltrip's No. 15 crew from last year and all of his teammate's cars, while Waltrip got Junior's cousin and former car chief Tony Eury Jr. as his crew chief, the rest of Earnhardt's crew from last year and what had been the No. 8 Chevrolets.

Earnhardt and Eury grew up together and are great friends, but they often clashed during races when things were not going well.

So far, Earnhardt and Rondeau, who took over as Waltrip's crew chief late last season after veteran Slugger Labbe left the team, have melded nicely.

But, looking to bounce back after California, the tough Vegas track will be a big test for them and the entire No. 8 team.

"I'm actually looking forward to it," Earnhardt said. "We tested at Las Vegas (in January) and we learned a lot of stuff in the last half of the California race that should help us there.

"Once we blew those tires, we turned the rest of the race into a test session. We're taking the same car we used at California."

Earnhardt said that bringing the same car with which he struggled at California is not as strange as it sounds.

"It was a good car when the tires stayed on it," he said. "Once we fixed that problem, it was pretty fast. But nobody noticed because we were more than 10 laps down.

"We tried a lot of things, the car got better and we learned a lot about the car that should be good for us at Vegas. The car was never a hassle to drive at any point during the race and it was by far one of the better cars I've driven at the big, flat tracks."
