Best of luck to all attending the NZRWA relays meeting, whether as a competitor, spectator or official.
To those of you who have not previously competed in a judged or monitored walking event please keep in mind the fact that the Judges are not out to disqualify you.
They are there for the sole purpose of ensuring that the event is fair to all competitors competing under a couple of established specific rules. The Judges do this by cautioning competitors or, in the worst cases, issuing a red card.
The Judges, particularly those who have race walked themselves, would love to go home after the event without having issued cautions or red cards.
So all you have to concentrate on is the straightening of the forward leg and the maintaining of contact with the ground and you will ensure yourself of an enjoyable event. Ignore the presence of Judges until they caution you for a breach of the rules then concentrate on not repeating the fault in your technique.
Get out there, give it your best and enjoy yourselves.

An enjoyable event once again. And perfect weather for a good time.
Michelle lead out to a great start and then handed it onto myself to bring it home for team Lei. we finished just under the 2 hours.
Lisa started off with great pace also and did the first two k's in 11 minutes. She handed it onto Ian and they came in approx 12mins behind us. Excellent seeing all the people out there for a great walk........and run.
Yesterday morning, Sunday 20th May over 600 took part in the fun walk/run from Feilding to Palmerston North.
The conditions were perfect, a complete cloud cover, no rain, no wind and about 13 degrees at the start.
The event sponsored by the ladies' gym named Curves went from their Feilding gym to their Palmerston North gym and is about 22kms covering good sealed roads and a 3km section of unsealed river track near the finish.
The event could be completed as individuals or as a relay and there was a large group of competitors who took the alternative distance of about 13km from Bunnythorpe to Palmerston North along the same route.
Being a fun event there was no official timekeeping but the first walkers home were the two person relay teams of Michelle and Andrus Lei followed closely by Lisa MacDonald and Ian Bailey. Perhaps one of these teams can give us their times. There were some very good performances put in by some of the newer faces as well as the established regular competitors.
The event was well organised and the competitors really appreciated the number of buses put on to ferry competitors to the start lines.
A big thank you to the Sponsors, the Officials and all the other competitors. Another successful Manawatu Striders event. Paul.

Certainly that is the case, Jack – its just that I have had enough of giving my time to these people and not getting a commitment from them. If they want to free-style then that’s great (for them) it is just that I intend to not give them my coaching time unless they commit to a Club (as many free-stylers are Independents) and to Racewalking.
You will see that we have a “B” Division in our Relay for Free-stylers.

I have taken a runner who's best half marathon time was about 1:40 and over a 4 year period leading up to the age of 38 she got under 1:40 for walking 20km. She had a number of performances around the 1:38 mark, and one of around 1:35.
I have spotted promising walkers in half marathons and similar races, and encouraged them to take race walking seriously. I got a number of others to a reasonable standard, but it tended to end in tears when they weren't prepared to slow down to master the technique, and ended up with too many DQ's.
I now confine my encouragement to those who naturally walk with a good straight leg. I might only see one or two in a race with about 300 walkers. Our top senior woman walker was one I spotted in this way. She doesn't live near me, and I haven't coached her, but I don't doubt that with the right training she could also get down somewhere around 1:40.
A lot of course depends on the mental attitude, and the one who made the grade was a very determined little lady. (She also had 4 children and a bad back to contend with!)
We see plenty of young women walking but the males don't tend to take it up until they are rather older. While we can expect to get the occasional elite female race walker from the ranks of joggers and freestyle walkers, I believe it is much less likely with males. Very few males in their twenties or early thirties will consider freestyle walking, and it isn't until they begin to slow down that they tend to give it a try.
But it is the people we recruit from the ranks of freestyle walkers in half marathons and the like, that are keeping our sport going.

You really have women who took up jogging in their thirties with no
previous background in athletics or any other sport that broke 1:40 for
20k? We have over 75 times your population and no woman with that kind
of background has ever done that. The closest from this country would
probably be Victoria Herazo, '92 and '96 Olympian, who was a sub-elite
runner who took up race walking at the age of 28 and had a 20k PR of
1:35:39.
It is certainly my experience that very few "freestyle walkers" ever
show any interest in race walking.

Michelle did not do the marathon. She was going shopping instead. Her surname is Daly. Christine has not long ago remarried, her new surname is Smith.

Of interest to Manawatu based members of the group, Christine Daly's time in the London Marathon was 5.44.40.
Not knowing what Michelle's surname is I was unable to find her time but becuase Christine's time is slower that I would expect I presume they walked together.

This event, under new sponsorship was fornerly known as the Kellys to Kellys and is a long standing event on very good roads with no hills and a short riverside track, suitable for walkers of all abilities.
Missing from the attachment is the walkers' start time from Bunnythorpe. This is 9.30 am.
This is a non-judged walk but walkers are expected to walk the total distance that they enter. Walkers do not run, not even for a short while.
This new initiative for Walkers (Racewalkers, Free-stylers, Social Walkers) throughout new Zealand is certainly with having a look – Go to - http://www.wellingtonwalkers.co.nz
The attachment contains the proposed Scottish Winter Walks Program. We are interested to hear from other Clubs and individuals that might like to participate in the events in the Program or to invite Scottish Walkers to join them in a visit to their Club or Event that is not listed.

Bart asked what the event was like. The course is a rural course, usually very safe, mainly flat but a couple of reasonable hills. Anyone can walk this course.
The event starts and finishes at the Sports Complex, Huxley Street, Pahiatua.
Sausage sizzle, cup of tea and refreshments available. Changing rooms and showers at the venue.
Prize giving (heaps of spot prizes from a multitude of local sponsors) at about 1.30 pm at the Sports Complex.
Enjoyable under all weather conditions except when rain is driven by a southerly. But they are not going to have any rain this year. (hopefully).
I have been so busy with this National Teams Relay for May that I had
overlooked the Pihiatua Walk which Daphne and I wanted to do.
Has anyone done this Walk - what's it like?

Many of you will have received my email from last week advising you of an Ekiden marathon race walking relay. I can now confirm the details of the event. If you are interested in competing please let me know, also if you know of other athletes who may be interested then please pass this email onto them. The relay is NOT limited to just race walkers, so any free style walkers are also welcome.
New Zealand Race walking Association - Inaugural National Teams Relay Championship (Hosted by Wellington Scottish Athletics)
Sat/Sun 26/27 May 2007 at Trentham (Upper Hutt) Race on Sunday - starts 9:30 "B" Division & 10am "A" Division with a number of activities on the Saturday (details to be advised later)
The Championship Event will consist of an Ekiden Relay (marathon distance split into six legs of 7.195k, 5k, 7.5k, 10k, 7.5k, & 5k.) There will be two Divisions -
· "A" Division - For Race walking Teams - fully judged to IAAF Rules · "B" Division - For Free-style walkers that must not lose contact i.e. bent knees (if necessary) but NO Jogging or Creeping.
· Composite Teams - Groups of Walkers that may include Walkers from any Team in the "A" Div. or "B" Div. who wish to walk a second time. This is a good way of getting some extra walking for those that are keen to do so. Rules as for "B" Division.
"A" Division - All Team members MUST be either members of the NZRWA or Athletics NZ Registered Athletes AND be members of the Club. Where an Area (Waikato/BOP, Hawke Bay/Gisborne, Nelson, etc) may not have a Club that can enter a Team, an "Area" Team will be acceptable - OR when an Area (Centre) already has a Club Team entered, another Team made up of Walkers from any Clubs in the Area that cannot enter a full Team may join and enter an "Area" (Centre). An Example of this would be - say, Auckland had "Bays-Cougar" Club entered as a Team; an "Auckland" Team made up of Walkers from any Club may also enter as well.
"B" Division" - Teams may be made up of any Walker belonging to a Club, Centre, Walking Group or Group of friends. Examples could be - Taranaki Race walkers - (Club Team) Nelson - (Centre Team Walk for Health - (Walking Group) Walk Ys - (Group of friends that do "special events - Taupo Relay, etc)
Composite Teams - Anyone can walk in these Teams including Walkers that have already walked in either of the "A" or "B" Division. Example of a Composite Team might be - Three Walkers that arrive without a Team that get together with three Walkers from other Teams - just for a bit of fun. These Teams are not eligible for Trophies.
Get in touch NOW to join in this interesting Walking initiative - register your interest and we will send you all the information as it comes available.
Full information - including activities on the Saturday, full race details, Accommodation and meals, etc will be available shortly with the official Entry Form.

At last we have made a small step in getting Walkers recognized at the Rotorua Marathon. This year we have achieved the best result we can. We have to prove to the Rotorua Committee that we can scrutineer the marathon; that we can eliminate the cheats from the walking section and we do merit more prizes in the future. Please support this event if you possibly can. Please pass this info onto other walkers, whatever their ability. By supporting in numbers we can have a large voice in the future to request merits – at least 1st 3 in Open and Masters.
Although I personally will not achieve a merit prize at an event like this, I can enter knowing that my time in the competitive section has only been bettered by genuine walkers. It is also a good feeling when a fellow walker like Peter Baille is recognised for their achievement.

Introducing a 'Competitive Walkers Section' after 43 years! This year those who enter the walking section in the Marathon have the chance to compete for trophies donated by the New Zealand Race Walking Association (NZRWA). The trophies will be awarded to the fastest male and female 'Competitive Walkers'. We know that not everyone who enters the walking section is able to race walk, so the rules for the trophies are being relaxed, as shown later. Also many who enter the walking section do sometimes want to jog for a short while, perhaps to catch up with a friend. If this is you, this is okay as long as you do not enter the 'Competitive Walker' section mentioned below (Or ideally we recommend you enter as a runner if you may think you will jog at any stage).
But if you enter as a walker and you are determined to walk for the whole of the race, and wish to be eligible for the 'fastest walking' prize, then we ask you to register your intention to be a "Competitive Walker" by sending an email to the address below. It is important to register as you will be provided with additional identification recognizable to our walking scrutineers (no registering as a Competitive Walker - no extra identification!).
Identification: This year all walkers will have numbers which are a different colour from the runners. All walkers will start shortly after the runners. They will be assembled behind the runners at the start. If you enter in our Competitive Walkers Section you will also receive a coloured ankle band which will be worn on the opposite leg to your transponder. This band identifies you to the teams of Scrutineers who will observe the race to ensure no one in the Competitive Walker Section jogs or runs.
How it will be Scrutineered: The Scrutineers will watch the race and are in communication with each other, the NZRWA representative Walks Director and the Lion Foundation Rotorua Marathon management team. During the race a Scrutineer may caution a Competitive Walker that they are not complying with our definition of walking. However due to safety considerations this may not be possible, and they will make a written note and pass this to the Walks Director after the race. If more than two Scrutineers record that a Competitive Walker did not comply then they will become ineligible to win a NZRWA trophy. Please note the decision by the NZRWA Walks Director is final. All Competitive Walkers will of course remain eligible for the Asics Duotech T-shirt and to go into draw for the Major Spot Prizes if they finish the event.
A definition of walking for the Lion Foundation Rotorua Marathon: Competitive Walking involves maintaining continuous contact with the road as judged by the human eye. The Competitor Walker must walk for the entire race. The competitor must not jog or run at any time. Jogging (characterized by the body bobbing up and down) is not permitted even if the Competitive Walker maintains contact with the road. Moderately bent knees are acceptable, but must not be exaggerated so that the walker is crouching. Competitive Walkers who are deemed to run or jog or whose crouching stance indicates they are losing contact will not be eligible for a NZRWA trophy.
Enter now! We hope many walkers will take advantage of this new opportunity to show how fast you can walk, without jogging. Walkers have told us over the years that there is a need to recognise the legitimate fast walkers. This is your chance to be part of the Competitive Walkers section and gain recognition for your honest efforts.
To Register as a Competitive Walker: Once you have entered the Lion Foundation Rotorua Marathon please ensure you then send your details to register as a 'Competitive Walker' to the NZRWA to alanclarke52@.... Make sure you give them the same name that you put on the Marathon entry form (and ideally date of birth as well to avoid any confusion). If you have already entered the marathon, please email the same information through to alanclarke52@... .
We hope many of you will take up this opportunity - it is the first time in the history of this fantastic event!
REMINDERS:
Deadline 23 March
The Entry Fees for all events go up after Sunday 23 March. Please enter now to save yourself some money.

We hope the more serous athletes will compete in The Lion Foundation Rotorua Marathon if endeavouring to qualify for others.

Leppin Recovery
Whilst the importance of using Leppin Enduro Booster both during and after exercise is well known, it is also worth considering Leppin Recovery Formula after those long runs. Recovery Formula is best taken immediately after exercise and has a large carbohydrate content which replaces lost energy and whey protein to help rebuild damaged muscle. This is combined with a vast number of vitamins, minerals and amino acids which are all critical elements for complete recovery. Available at your usual Leppin Stockist or go to www.leppinsport.com
Training Book updated...... Gary Moller has updated his detailed Training eBook, so worth looking at for the first time, or to review if already referring to and utilising this as your main marathon training tool.
...And the best little stretching book Gary has also put together a very sensible 'Stretching Exercises for Running' ebook - this can be used by all, 5km, 10km or marathon runners [and walkers, and those who are forced to be more sedentary such as (ironically) event managers!].

Anyone wanting to purchase Race Walking merchandise for themselves or as gifts for others could try clicking onto http://www.cafepress.com/rwuniverse . It may not be cheap, depending on exchange rate, but it is certainly specific to our sport.
I have forwarded this message to inform all competitive walkers that Scott Newman, the long awaited CEO of Athletics New Zealand, is now a full-time employee and you will find that he is a very approachable and knowledgeable person to have at the helm of our sport.
I personally have known Scott since his primary school days and he will do a very good job for the whole sport.
Ah! Some much needed fresh air.
Cheers, Paul.
