Subject: Results from the Scottish Ekiden Relay

Hi everyone,

The results from the Wellington Scottish Athletics Club Ekiden Walking Relay held on Sunday are now available on- http://www.athletics.org.nz/well/article.aspx?ID=1924&Mode=1. They are also on www.scottishathletics.org.nz and will soon be on www.wellingtonwalkers.co.nz

The weather was perfect, calm and not too warm and this ensured a great atmosphere at the change over and all round the 2.5 km circuit.  The Taranaki Race Walkers Club were the clear winners of the Championship division, but they did not have it all their own way with the lead changing hands a number of times in the early laps.  However once Glenn Burrell did his 10 km leg it was a catch up situation for everyone else. There were six area/center and club teams plus one composite team in the A Division.

In the B Grade the Hawkes Bay Marathon Clinic was a clear all the way winner with all round solid performances. Twenty six teams competed in the B Division and until the latter part of the race there were frequent changes of order with good competition.

The main sponsors were the New Balance Company and Upper Hutt city Council, and our thanks to them and the other sponsors.  We also want to thank the more than 40 Scottish Club members and supporters for other walking groups and clubs in Wellington for their willing and professional help to make the event a success.

A full report and photos will be in the next issue of Race Walking New Zealand’s magazine Contact.

On the Saturday afternoon there were on going walking DVD’s playing and thee were also classes in exercises and stretching and race walking judges.  Both were very well attended.

At the Special General Meeting of NZRWA held in association with the weekend’s events the new name of Race Walking New Zealand Incorporated was adopted with a new constitution.  At the dinner in the evening nearly 90 heard Craig Barrett recount some of his experiences, and he was the race starter on Sunday.

It was a great weekend, and I’m sure it will attract even more support next year.  Our very able committee lead by the tireless and enthusiastic Bart Jones will meet soon to review the weekend.

Regards

David Lonsdale
