Introducing a 'Competitive Walkers Section' after 43 years! This year those who enter the walking section in the Marathon have the chance to compete for trophies donated by the New Zealand Race Walking Association (NZRWA). The trophies will be awarded to the fastest male and female 'Competitive Walkers'. We know that not everyone who enters the walking section is able to race walk, so the rules for the trophies are being relaxed, as shown later. Also many who enter the walking section do sometimes want to jog for a short while, perhaps to catch up with a friend. If this is you, this is okay as long as you do not enter the 'Competitive Walker' section mentioned below (Or ideally we recommend you enter as a runner if you may think you will jog at any stage).
But if you enter as a walker and you are determined to walk for the whole of the race, and wish to be eligible for the 'fastest walking' prize, then we ask you to register your intention to be a "Competitive Walker" by sending an email to the address below. It is important to register as you will be provided with additional identification recognizable to our walking scrutineers (no registering as a Competitive Walker - no extra identification!).
Identification: This year all walkers will have numbers which are a different colour from the runners. All walkers will start shortly after the runners. They will be assembled behind the runners at the start. If you enter in our Competitive Walkers Section you will also receive a coloured ankle band which will be worn on the opposite leg to your transponder. This band identifies you to the teams of Scrutineers who will observe the race to ensure no one in the Competitive Walker Section jogs or runs.
How it will be Scrutineered: The Scrutineers will watch the race and are in communication with each other, the NZRWA representative Walks Director and the Lion Foundation Rotorua Marathon management team. During the race a Scrutineer may caution a Competitive Walker that they are not complying with our definition of walking. However due to safety considerations this may not be possible, and they will make a written note and pass this to the Walks Director after the race. If more than two Scrutineers record that a Competitive Walker did not comply then they will become ineligible to win a NZRWA trophy. Please note the decision by the NZRWA Walks Director is final. All Competitive Walkers will of course remain eligible for the Asics Duotech T-shirt and to go into draw for the Major Spot Prizes if they finish the event.
A definition of walking for the Lion Foundation Rotorua Marathon: Competitive Walking involves maintaining continuous contact with the road as judged by the human eye. The Competitor Walker must walk for the entire race. The competitor must not jog or run at any time. Jogging (characterized by the body bobbing up and down) is not permitted even if the Competitive Walker maintains contact with the road. Moderately bent knees are acceptable, but must not be exaggerated so that the walker is crouching. Competitive Walkers who are deemed to run or jog or whose crouching stance indicates they are losing contact will not be eligible for a NZRWA trophy.
Enter now! We hope many walkers will take advantage of this new opportunity to show how fast you can walk, without jogging. Walkers have told us over the years that there is a need to recognise the legitimate fast walkers. This is your chance to be part of the Competitive Walkers section and gain recognition for your honest efforts.
To Register as a Competitive Walker: Once you have entered the Lion Foundation Rotorua Marathon please ensure you then send your details to register as a 'Competitive Walker' to the NZRWA to alanclarke52@.... Make sure you give them the same name that you put on the Marathon entry form (and ideally date of birth as well to avoid any confusion). If you have already entered the marathon, please email the same information through to alanclarke52@... .
We hope many of you will take up this opportunity - it is the first time in the history of this fantastic event!
REMINDERS:
The Entry Fees for all events go up after Sunday 23 March. Please enter now to save yourself some money.
- Marathon Course IAAF Certified - plus Merit Prizes
Marathon - Start 9.00am Saturday 28 April Planning is well underway to have the marathon course officially measured and IAAF certified. We hope the more serous athletes will compete in The Lion Foundation Rotorua Marathon if endeavouring to qualify for others.
Remember, aside from the possible $25,000 prize if the Men's and/or the Women's course record is broken (see website for detail and conditions), the overall winners go away with a fat purse. For first overall male & female $4000, second male & female $2000, and third is $1000. Plus with each Age Group the first 3 placed receive excellent product from Asics, Thorlo, Leppin Enduro Booster, and Oxygen.
5km & 10km - Start 9.15am Saturday 28 April The first male and female home for each of these two 'Fun Runs' do receive a very good pack of goods! And this year we have ensured the courses are correctly measured to within a few meters of 5km or 10km.
Whilst the importance of using Leppin Enduro Booster both during and after exercise is well known, it is also worth considering Leppin Recovery Formula after those long runs. Recovery Formula is best taken immediately after exercise and has a large carbohydrate content which replaces lost energy and whey protein to help rebuild damaged muscle. This is combined with a vast number of vitamins, minerals and amino acids which are all critical elements for complete recovery. Available at your usual Leppin Stockist or go to www.leppinsport.com
