Handicap events   Message List

Hi All

In my opinion, we do need more events of an open handicap nature, and it is most probably more prudent to utilise existing events as the means to an end. Those of us who are at the top end of the performers (gosh its good to have memories) have the satisfaction of battling out the regional and national championships (judging levels permitting) as an aspect of goal setting . Those not so fleet-footed should have the satisfaction of getting a chance to race against the best with a chance of winning.

Long have I promoted handicap events as being an important aspect of racing.

The point has been suggested that NZRWA should have a greater role in this aspect of race walking promotion. If the NZRWA was to be involved, should it not be at the full national level and not just at single events?

I have in the past, proposed that a national register of race walkers performance levels be generated. This list may (possibly) need to have an indication as to whether a walker was IAAF compliant or a sport/speed/event/power/fitness walker. This register would be kept, and updated, by NZRWA with the results sent in by regional co-ordinators. At the end of the year a trophy would be awarded to the NZRWA member with the greatest points achieved from their "across the line" results under the handicap system.

This point in itself, if widely promoted in the press, and other media, may well be an attractant to pending NZRWA members.

Participation can be by any walker eligible to compete in the pre-selected series of events, NZRWA member or not. If masters athletics can produce a performance percentage for all participants (all events), there should be no significant reason why a national race walking handicap system can't be organised.

I do appreciate the problems involved in setting up a register and would expect that the success would depend on the local co-ordinators being able to promote the events and ensure that adequate results were forwarded to the NZRWA handicapper.

Let's hear your comments on this!

Cheers
Gary
