Hi Evan, Thanks for replying. You are, at the moment, the only person who has communicated any interest, whether for or against.
The system of postal events has been in use in Australia for quite a while and is contested by the various states. Each state has their own group of clubs whose members compete in a event of a set distance on a set day or weekend, say a 10km walk on 27th May. The states hold their event and send their results to the already established collator who puts all the results together and you may find that first place goes to a NSW walker, second to WA, third to Queensland, fourth to Tasmania etc. There may also be team events. Because of the high costs of travel in such a huge country these walkers would rarely compete against each other but they still have a great rivalry.
It is sometimes after the rivalry established by competing in postal events that walkers become determined to compete against a particular opponent at an actual event. There always has been races within races and this will increase as the numbers of athletes involved increases. This has to help everyone.
The Australians have asked if we would like to be able to compete with their athletes in postal events. Our events don't have to be major events, some may only have five or six competing but at least they are competing and thus finding a reason to continue putting in the long hours of often lonely training necessary to beat others.
And the best part of the scheme is you don't have to be a world beater to compete. All speeds, abilities and age groups are compared accordingly. If we want our part of the events to be a handicap event we, on receipt of the results from the collator, can apply a predetermined handicap to the individual times to establish handicap placings as well as line honours.
Paul.

Subject: [Kiwiwalkers] Postal events.Hi, I have received communication from the President of Racewalking Australia inviting us to participate in postal events competing against Australians and South Africans who have indicated that they are definitely interested. The suggestion is that various interested clubs or groups would, on a particular day, conduct a race over a specific distance with all results going to a central point for collation and placings awarded accordingly. The collation point is already established.I have raised the idea that because we have only small numbers compared with Australia that consideration be given to making some events handicap events with handicaps based on recent best times of the athletes. This would give everyone a chance of success.I would like to know how the members of this group feel about the suggestions. Would you like to compete in international postal events? Don't be put off because of costs as I believe that there will be no cost as the internet will provide all of the organisational communication needed. I feel that this is a most attractive offer. Please reply via the group asap.Cheers, Paul.
