Kenny's Daytona Race Recap by Volunteer News Reporter Sue of Clear Spring,
MD: Kenny started the Pepsi 400 at Daytona Int. Speedway in the 28th
position. Moving forward right away, he was in position 18 by lap 4.
Continuing his forward movement, Kenny was 13th by lap 17. At this point,
Kenny started slipping backward. On lap 29, he was shown in 18th. Losing
another spot, Kenny was 19th on lap 43. Around lap 49, CBS mentioned that
Kenny's car must have an aero push because he wasn't running single file
well. A caution came out on lap 52 for debris. During this caution, Kenny
had a long pit stop. He was in position 34 by lap 62. Another caution came
out on lap 84. At this point, Kenny did not pit immediately with the
leaders. He stayed out on the track and led the race for 5 bonus points.
Yes!! By lap 103, Kenny had worked his way back up to position 23. He was
shown in 19th spot at lap 108. On lap 121, Kenny was in 23rd position. He
moved ahead again to spot 20 on lap 124. Kenny was in position 13 by lap
130. On lap 135, NOL RaceCast showed the 42 BellSouth Chevy as having the
fastest lap time - 188.036! Backsliding again, Kenny was in position 18 on
lap 144. I believe Kenny pitted during a caution on lap 146.Another caution
came out with only about 6 laps to go. Most of the drivers stayed out on the
track.Kenny and Team 42 obviously felt a pit stop was necessary. Following
the pit stop, he was in 31st position. Kenny sure did some great driving the
last 3 laps of the race. He moved up 9 spots and took his 42 Chevy across
the finish line in 22nd position. Great job!! Thanks go to CBS, NOL
RaceCast, and MRN Radio for the info for this race recap. The key word for
Kenny's last 3 races is consistency - this is good!! Best of luck to Kenny
and Team 42 in the JIFFY LUBE 300 in Loudon, NH.

Driver Kenny Irwin, BellSouth and Federal
Emergency Management Agency Honor
Local Businesses for Disaster Prevention
Efforts on Daytona Wildfires Anniversary

June 30, 2000--NASCAR driver Kenny Irwin and BellSouth, in partnership with
the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) initiative Project Impact:
Building Disaster Resistant Communities, today are honoring several local
businesses for their key roles in helping the Daytona area prepare for and
recover from natural disasters. On the second anniversary of the Daytona
fires and the shutdown of the Daytona Speedway, BellSouth, FEMA and Irwin
recognized the Daytona Beach-Halifax area Chamber of Commerce and the
Daytona Beach News Journal for the their separate roles in supporting the
community during wildfires that caused the cancellation of the 1998 Pepsi
400 as well as for their efforts in recent years in public education and
hurricane awareness programs.

In a ceremony at the BellSouth Mobility store located outside the Volusia
mall at 11 a.m. today, Irwin, FEMA's chief financial officer and Senior
Advisor to the Director Gary Johnson, and BellSouth Corporate and External
Affairs representative Joe Petrock praised the leadership of the Chamber and
the News Journal. During the 1998 fires, the Chamber met with key leaders in
the community to assist in efforts to protect businesses, homes and the
community. It has also put on numerous hurricane preparedness seminars in
recent years. The News Journal also played a strategic role during the
wildfires, providing vital maps, information on evacuations, and in-depth
information on preparedness and recovery for the community. It continues to
provide timely editions on preparedness for natural disasters for business
and family, assisting them to take action to reduce potentially devastating
disasters.

"We must inform the public about ways they can protect themselves, their
businesses and their homes from damage resulting from severe weather and
other disasters," said Johnson. "Because NASCAR fans are the fabric of our
community, our partnership with Kenny Irwin provides the unique opportunity
to reach those who follow the nation's largest spectator sport."

"Prevention is the key to surviving any disaster," said Kenny Irwin, driver
of the No. 42 BellSouth Chevrolet. "NASCAR events are concentrated in a
region often hurt by disasters such as hurricanes and floods. By helping to
spread this message of prevention, we can help protect the communities that
have made racing the number one spectator sport in America."

Irwin serves as spokesperson for BellSouth and FEMA's Project Impact to
educate Americans about the importance of disaster prevention. Irwin is
reaching out to NASCAR fans to inform them that fast action could and should
be taken to protect their homes and businesses from disasters and
disruptions ranging from hurricanes to technology crashes.

Throughout the NASCAR season, he will continue to recognize individuals and
businesses making a difference in building disaster-resistant communities.
"Together, we encourage all Americans to prepare their families, homes and
workplaces to protect them from catastrophe," said Irwin. BellSouth and FEMA
work together through their Lifeline partnership to educate Americans on the
importance of planning ahead for the unexpected. Many Americans still need
to take steps to protect their homes from disaster. And nearly one-third of
U.S. businesses are completely unprepared to deal with any type of business
disruption, ranging from hurricanes to e-mail viruses.

"BellSouth is proud to work alongside businesses like the Chamber of
Commerce and the News Journal to help mitigate the disruption of lives and
the economic loss that occurs from all types of disasters," said Joe
Petrock. "We hope that other businesses and community groups will also join
the effort to protect their businesses, their employees and their
communities. By taking preventive actions now, we can improve the safety and
productivity of individuals, businesses and the community as a whole," said
Petrock.

Surprisingly, natural disasters account for a mere 5 percent of business
disruptions while the majority of disruptions are attributed to causes such
as human error and technology. This indicates the critical importance for
companies and their employees to be prepared to deal with any type of
disruption.
