Ok everyone, it's time to take out our #27 Tonka diecasts and set them
on the TV or somewhere to remind us of the excitement that we felt in
September 1997 when our driver sat on the outside pole in his first Cup
Series race and finished the race in the top 10. I was so excited for
Kenny for that accomplishment.
Have a great weekend. Ginger
Hi, all. First, when you have time take a look at the Foundation page. Akins Motorsports (38 car in the Busch Series - they just let Tyler Walker go and Mike Wallace has been driving it) has partnered with the Foundation. They are to be carrying a sticker of the Dare to Dream Camp on the car. Also, Kenny, Sr. is to be on Busch 24/7 in the near future.
At the end of last year, I had ordered some books for my classroom at school. I ordered a series of racing books (kids love them!). I got them today, and the stock car one had several cars on the cover and the 28 was on it. It was Kenny's 28 - you can always tell by those headlights! Pretty cool!

I just finished watching Stephen Wallace win his first ARCA race in car number 27. Kenny did the same thing at Daytona in the 1998 ARCA race in the Raybestos #27. I still miss Kenny. Hope everyone is doing well. If any of you are coming to Bristol next week, please let me know. Ginger

2005
By Sharon Sherwood
Sunday's New England 300 at Loudon is now in the history books and we
are one race closer to locking in the contenders for the Chase for the
Championship.
As I watched Tony Stewart scale the grandstand fence to celebrate his
third win in four races, holding the checkered flag aloft in triumph,
I reflected on the resilience of the human spirit.
It's no secret that the drivers do not look forward to racing at New
Hampshire International Speedway -- a track with a somber history. A
track where -- within a period of just 8 weeks during the 2000 season
-- Adam Petty (May 12) and Kenny Irwin Jr. (July 7), were both killed
in similar collisions with the turn 3 wall during practice sessions.
I doubt that anyone ever returns to Loudon without thinking of the two
young rising stars.
Kenny Irwin Jr., a 30-year old USAC sprint car champion, was known for
his inordinate kindness and patience with fans and reporters alike.
Kenny worked his way up through the open wheel ranks and had dreams of
making his mark in Winston Cup, earning the 1997 Craftsman Truck
Rookie of the Year title and 1998 Winston Cup Rookie honors. Kenny
spent much time away from the track helping others, and was
particularly generous in his charitable work for the benefit of
underprivileged children.
Adam Petty was a vital and exuberant 19-year old and first
fourth-generation driver in Winston Cup history, involved in many of
the Petty family's charitable causes, including the Kyle Petty Charity
Ride Across America. Adam was a Busch Series regular who, just four
weeks prior to his fatal crash, had completed his Winston Cup debut at
Texas Motor Speedway in preparation for a full time cup ride in 2001.
Unthinkable despair. Yet out of the ashes, so much hope so much joy.
Irwin's parents, Kenny Sr. and Reva Irwin, founded the Kenny Irwin Jr.
Memorial Foundation in 2001. Three years later, the Dare to Dream Camp
opened its doors to carry on their son's legacy of compassion. The
camp, which is located in New Castle Indiana, provides opportunities
for at-risk, neglected and abused children to pursue their dreams in a
fun and supportive atmosphere, something they may have never before
experienced.
Kyle and Patty Petty founded the Victory Junction Gang Camp in June
2004, honoring son Adam's vision of a getaway for children with life
threatening or chronic illnesses. The race themed facility, situated
in Randleman, N.C., provides the wholesome activities of a traditional
summer camp along with medical assistance, and perhaps most
importantly, a chance for kids to meet and make memories with other
children like themselves.
From tragedy and loss -- to hope, healing, and second chances. I
believe that though their time on this earth was far too short, Adam
Petty and Kenny Irwin left priceless gifts of spirit which God has
used to touch many young lives. More lives than most of us can ever
hope to touch in a lifetime.

My prayers go out to Kenny's family, friends and fans during this day. I
can't believe it's been so long since Kenny left us. Time flies by fast---
but I'll always remember him. The sad thing was, I was just becoming a big
fan of his and Adam Petty's when they both had their crashes....
God bless,
Loralie

I was reminded by Barbara Widitz, who runs a Jeff Gordon newsletter (http://www.fullspeed.to/jeffgordon) that today is the 5th anniversary of Kenny Irwin's tragic death as a result of a crash during practice at New Hampshire. Kenny Irwin Jr., 1998 Winston Cup Rookie of The Year, was only 30.
Of all the NASCAR drivers who have tragically died, Kenny has been forgotten for the most part, as far as I am concerned. You hear about Dale Earnhardt, Adam Petty, Davey Allison, and Alan Kulwicki all the time, but only rarely is Kenny Irwin Jr. mentioned. The same might also be said for J.D. McDuffie.
The Official Kenny Irwin Jr. Memorial Foundation website is online at http://www.kennyirwinjrfoundation.org/. If you are a Kenny Irwin Jr. fan, you ought to check it out.
"Kenny and Reva Irwin, parents of the late Kenny Irwin Jr., have unveiled the official Kenny Irwin Jr. Memorial Foundation.org website. Located at http://www.kennyirwinjrfoundation.org, the website has a "fan club" section to learn how to support the foundation, as well as a contact section with e-mail addresses, phone numbers, directions information, and a printable donation form. Another feature is current photos and regularly updated news about the Dare to Dream Camp, located near New Castle, Indiana. The 27 acre campground has a six acre lake. The foundation was established in 2000, as a way for the Irwin's to honor Kenny's legacy, and continue his generosity to under-privileged children. The Irwins wanted an official website to serve as an ongoing tribute to Kenny's memory by creating awareness for upcoming foundation events and projects." (Jayski)

Hi, Tammy! Welcome, and feel free to post!
I also have some "feel good" Kenny news. As we always do, Bo and I
went to the Silver Crown (yea, Dave Steele!!) and IRL(Helio climbed
the fence almost right in front us - cool!) races in Richmond on
Saturday. The fellow who sat beside us was looking at my t-shirt with
the picture of Kenny and I, and then he noticed the cap Bo was wearing
(Kenny's camp cap). He was so surprised to wind up sitting beside
people who were also aware of Kenny's Camp. Turns out he works for a
large insurance company and they have a Leave a Legacy Program. They
give to charitable causes. The company decided they didn't want to
give to large corporate charities that get a lot of support from
everywhere. So they chose Kenny's Camp to support. For every big
deal (something like that) they make, they donate $42 dollars to the
camp. Very cool! He was a very nice guy and was touched when I told
him that a group of us still go to the camp every summer and help out.
Also as we were leaving, a man and his wife called out to us. They
had also noticed my shirt. He wanted to make sure that it was a
picture of Kenny. I said yes, and his wife said, "Bless his heart.
I'm glad other people still remember him too." I assured her others do!
Week-old news - just mentioning this in case people didn't hear. Dave
Rodman wrote an article after Ryan Newman won the pole at Michigan.
Ryan spoke of Kenny and how he was a prolific pole winner in the open
wheel cars. Also on Inside Nextel Cup Carl Edwards spoke of a
conversation he had had with Kenny and Kenny told him to race in
Silver Crown cars and it would give him good experience. Both of
those guys just went up a notch in my book!
