Is there a time/place for the Friday meeting?
It might be a good idea to show Jill pictures or video from other bike
parks like Woodward park (Fresno) or Colonnade (Seattle) which have been
a huge success.

Great news for Kernville, The BMX track was approved by the chamber yesterday! The location is behind the Rodeo grounds and the chamber already owns a significant amount of dirt to jump start the building. It turns out they put the wrong type of dirt down in the Rodeo grounds (its packs down to hard) so that's coming out and available for the track. Near term goals are to build the track and start hosting BMX races. There's a small informal gathering this friday evening to discuss plans including longer term goals of an MTB skills park. You can contact Jill at the chamber (or myself) for details.

*Kern River Valley Gathering 2009*
October 30 - November 1, 2009
Bionicon may have lost a building and a bunch of bikes, but we haven't
lost our sense of a good time and good people. So come and join us for
some great fall riding in Southern California! This is the third annual
gathering.
Located in and around the Scenic Kern River Valley, just three hours
drive from Los Angeles. The valley is home to many incredible trails
such as the Cannell Trail, Just Outstanding, Dutch Flat and the Kern
Canyon trail, just to name a few. There are trails for any type of rider
here but the area is best know for its moderate to challenging all
mountain trails.
Bionicon will be hosting a free BBQ to all participants and we expect to
have a limited number of demo bikes available to test on any of the rides.
Please RSVP for the BBQ with the number of guests and request Carnivore
or Herbivore fare so there is enough food for everyone.
BBQ RSVP at http://www.socaltrailriders.org/foru...day=2009-10-30

I agree- the River Trail (4-mile Trail) is a major highlight of the ride! The Rincon option is far less scenic with lots of hot sandy steep hills (far more hike-a-bike for me).

by far the best camping spots.
Another option once you get to the Johnsondale Bridge it to ride uphill and then cut
across along the F.S. road to Greenhorn and then ride some combination of
JO/Waggy/Dutch flat down. This would be less technical and frustrating
than the Rincon-Whiskey Flat combo, maybe more physical, much cooler (staying
up around 6000 ft for the most part) and really would necessitate an overnight
stop.
You can always skip the river trail and ride the
Rincon trail all the way out to the highway and down to Fairview to connect with the whiskey flat
trail.

Hi Rocketman - you ask very relevant questions for the rides you are considering. Awesome ride plan too! Very beautiful country. I concur with the other poster. The Rincon trail south of Packsaddle turnoff is more hiking up relatively unmaintained trail. Whiskey Flat may be a more enjoyable option out of Fairview. It has one big hike bike in the middle, and is a bit brushy at the upper end, but very beautiful with views of the river here and there. The riding is pretty rocky technical with lots of ups and downs in and out of drainages all the way down to Kernville. Take lots of water and/or a filter if the temps are up!

I have done both options out from Cedar Creek to pavement...
Taking the Rincon out is much faster and less technical. It has some big hills which I hiked but might be rideable.
The connector trail dropping down to the 4 mile trail is awesome. Its narrow single track with major consequences if you go off. Pretty memorable.
The 4 mile trail itself is very technical. Lots of sand and rocks which all seem to be facing the wrong way.
4 mile is much more scenic than the Rincon which is in the moonscape from the McNally fire at that point.
I have also ridden the Rincon from Brush Creek up to the packsaddle trail. It was in very poor condition. There were tons of down trees by the bottom. It goes strait up the a side drainage. I hiked most of it. Strong climbers might have had a different experience. I have not been on the Rincon past packsaddle cave...
I'm a rider out of Bakersfield. I plan on doing an overnighter starting at Sherman Pass. never heard of Maki trail either, it kindof looks like waggy ridge down farther with the lake views...the trail kindof fizzles out near the bottom like the "animal trails" they are talking about (??)

I know this is a MTB group, but lots of you are kayakers
too. Anyway, a couple of friends of mine are selling brand new creek boats.
One is a Liquid Logic Jefe; the hull is brand new, the outfitting was used a
few times - $600 firm. Another is a Dagger Nomad 8.5; it is brand new right
now, but will be used a few times during the Kern River Festival – asking
$600.
I also ride and kayak. In the spring I pretty much hang up the bike to boat. Drop me a line if you are ever headed to the kern to boat (gene hacker at mchsi dot com)
I don't know what riding is close to Visalia. We sometimes ride up near Quaking Aspen/Camp Nelson...there are some great trails around there. The nelson trail is technical but reasonable....good stuff!
Hello Everyone, I'm Ryan. I live in Visalia, not to far from you all. I'm a kayaker and am looking to get into mountain biking. If you guys have any good trails for fairly new off road riders I would love to hear your suggestions. Thank!
