I also ride and kayak. In the spring I pretty much hang up the bike to boat. Drop me a line if you are ever headed to the kern to boat (gene hacker at mchsi dot com)
I don't know what riding is close to Visalia. We sometimes ride up near Quaking Aspen/Camp Nelson...there are some great trails around there. The nelson trail is technical but reasonable....good stuff!
Hello Everyone, I'm Ryan. I live in Visalia, not to far from you all. I'm a kayaker and am looking to get into mountain biking. If you guys have any good trails for fairly new off road riders I would love to hear your suggestions. Thank!

Keyesville Trail Work Day and Ride Saturday Jan 31 8:30 Mesa Marin Chevron Pitstop We will be working on the outer loop; a re-route at the top and arrest a few rutting problems out that way. Bring bikes and work gloves as we will ride up the trail backwards from the bottom of Pearl Harbor Drive. The Keyesville Course is in great shape but it could use a bit of attention. If anyone wants to ride the trail in it’s entirety that can be arranged also, it’d be a good introduction to the Keyesville Course. This is a great way to support our Mountain Biking. And next time you ride the course you’ll recognize your handiwork; go ahead and pat yourself on the back. Tim Strem 204-1458

I thought I would pass this along:
Keeping Our Trails Twisty
We encourage everyone to respect the temporary fire closures in the
Piutes in order to give the vegetation time to grow back around the
trails. We all enjoy the forest trails because they are twisty, tight
and interesting. Often after a fire the trees and bushes which defined
the twisty trail are gone and it is easy to just go straight. The bushes
will grow back over the next few years, but if people shortcut and
straighten out the trail now, then the straightaway will become the new
trail, which will also channel the water down the trail, possibly
creating erosion ruts and requiring increased trail maintenance. We all
want to ride interesting forest trails.
As though that is not enough we have done the math and shortcutting the
trails can reduce the length of the trail up to 40%. We need to keep all
the trail mileage that we can so........
Please Help Keep Your Trails Twisty-Stay On The Trail
There is a bill that is getting pushed thru that would create more
wilderness areas on BLM land. I am not fully opposed to wilderness
designation, but it dose greatly limit recreation and access to many
areas and its obviously very bad for Mt biking (as they are not allowed
in Wilderness areas). For me its kind of a case by case basis if I
think its a bad thing or not.
Anyhow I thought I would pass along some basic info I was sent which
opposes it, so folks would know about it...
/
"//*Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid recently announced his plans to
call back the Senate on November 17 to vote on a massive land grab bill
that will lock up millions of additional acres of public land, close
thousands of miles of recreation trails, harm already struggling rural
economies, further reduce renewable resource harvesting, be detrimental
to forest health by eliminating all forest management, restrict property
rights and hamstring energy exploration in the United States.*
*The bill would create over 100 new Wilderness Areas, Wilderness Study
Areas & Conservation Areas, many without Public or local involvement or
support. It would eliminate existing energy production leases, forcing
more dependency on foreign energy sources & further increasing the cost
of energy in the US. The proposed Wilderness areas do not even meet the
intent of the Wilderness Act as untouched by the hand of man.
The bill would codify the National Landscape Conservation System (NLCS)
currently consisting of 40 million acres of land administered by the
BLM. The NLCS would threaten the Bureau of Land Management's
long-standing multiple use strategy by placing conservation and
preservation of "nationally significant landscapes" above traditional
uses."*

The folks from the Brewery and the Forrest Service will be
doing trail work on JO Saturday, the 15th of November. As you
know, getting the water bars in for the winter rains will really help the trail
come next year. Also, the bottom third has gotten a bit rutted. We’ll

There is a trials comp this weekend in Keysville and a couple of riders
have expressed an interest in doing some trail work. Stewards of the
Sequoia is already working a different trail this weekend, so they are
looking for a trailboss to head up this crew.
Dutchflat received new water bars last year but they need to cleaned
out. This is usually pretty easy and fast work.
Anyhow if anyone is interested please respond asap as its kind of a last
minute. You can either contact me or Stewards of the Sequoia.
Thanks for the work on Waggy Ridge - that trail is getting so good. Lets plan to ride it next week when you get back!

The Senate passed their "sweetened" version of the bailout and it's on its way to the House. In my opinion, we are in grave danger of it passing this time around now that members can point to pros for the individual tax payers and the pressure is most definitely upon them
by party heads, the president and incumbents.
If you haven't already emailed your representative, please, please do so now! They are listening, they're worried about re-election! It is, after all, the House of Representatives, they should be acting on behalf of their constituents, not their party leaders. http://www.house. gov/house/ MemStateSearch. shtml
Postulate what you want about the right or wrong of this bailout, you cannot deny the very real possibility that once the banks purge their books
of the toxic securities the credit freeze will still persist! What will they do with the money? There are no provisions attached to the money that
requires them to turn around and start lending again. A bailout does not guarantee an immediate, even eventual, thawing of the credit freeze
(anytime soon).
I had several contacts email me in response to my forwarded message. One shared their personal letter with me, others shared links and info. Below are some of their inputs.
"Conflict of interest??? Corruption?? ??? And a few days ago Warren Buffet invests 5 billion in Goldman Sachs. Yesterday he freaked out on Congress and said that if they dont pass the bailout plan , they will cause the worse financial disaster in nations history. (once they pass it, he gets waaaay richer). There is a huge transfer of wealth going on, and power grab going to the ultra elite.

I heard on the radio today that they are going to do a prescribed burn up there starting tomorrow. Any ideas on how long it will last and how it might affect access to the area?
Forest Service to Begin Prescribed Burning On the West Plateau
Kernville, CA., September 26, 2008... Fire crewsplan to begin ignitions within the West Plateau prescribed fire project commencing October 1, 2008.
The project area is located near Big Meadow and Cannell Meadow,
approximately 20 miles northeast of Kernville. Between 500 to 1,000
acres are scheduled for burning this year, as part of an ongoing
prescribed burning program.
The objective of this prescribed burn is to re-introduce fire to its
natural role in the forest under a controlled setting. The prescribed
fire will reduce fuels and improve wildlife habitat.
Firefighters will use hand-held drip torches to ignite the
prescribed fire. Fire Managers will continue to work closely with the
San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District to monitor smoke
production and minimize impacts to the community.
Smoke from the burn operation will be visible from most of the
communities around Lake Isabella and the Kennedy Meadows area.
Temporary road and trail closures may occur in and near the vicinity of
the prescribed burn operations.
Prescribed burn efforts will continue as weather conditions, resources and air quality permit.
For further information, please contact Jim Yearwood, Fuels
Management Officer, at the Kernville Ranger Station, (760) 376-3781,
extension 622.

Subject: Fw: A 30 yr banker wants carte blanche with your money
I myself am not in favor of this bailout as it presently stands. I think they need to slow it down and take measured steps. It's all too rushed and a load of fear mongering. Something doesn't smell right.
I'll be contacting my representative in the 22nd district today.
Subject: A 30 yr banker wants carte blanche with your money
A 30 yr banker wants 700 billion no questions, no oversight, to do with as he sees fit, and we're just going to give it to him? Only two years ago Hank Paulson was running Goldman Sachs. He's still part of the fraternity and he wants your tax dollars to bail out his buddies after their unscrupulous activity has all but bankrupted their companies. Let them fail, they've made their bed. What about all the lost jobs? At Goldman Sachs, for instance, employee's average salaries are $600,000--that figure includes secretaries! I'm sure they'll be alright between now and their next job. Reckless behavior has it's consequences, why give them a get out of jail free card? We're sending them a message that it is OK to play their high stakes wagers, over and over again because we are willing to subsidize their losses.
I would love to be able to find a buyer willing to pay 2006 prices for my home! Heck, I'd be happy if I could sell my house even at today's prices but no ones seems to be knocking on my door with an offer. If I could be so lucky! Why should banks receive a dollar more than the fair market value of their so-called assets? They should just be glad they found a buyer willing to buy at a time when prices are still falling through the floor! Defaults and foreclosures are flooding in at record levels, and that record will continue to climb. This proposed bailout does nothing to stem the losses that depress the market further and further every day.
Give us a real solution. Something we can get behind and see the positives for us, the investor.
Contrary to what the Bush administration would have you believe, we are not on the verge of Armageddon. Bush was quick to draw attention to the historic one-day drop in the stock market on Monday, and suggest the 700 billion that he was asking for a bailout was therefore a far better deal. I don't recall him saying anything about the near equally historic one-day gain (best in 6 years) the market saw Tuesday. The money doesn't just evaporate. Investors may pull their money back out and stick it in CDs for a while but they'll eventually want back in for larger gains.
It will be a protracted recession. Let the market take care of itself and we might get through it faster. Or at the very least, take the time to craft a credible bill that comes with more restrictions, oversight, and better game plan.
Pressure your congressman to vote NO on the current plan! Many of them are on the ballots for re-election in a little over a month and fear the repercussions of voting for a bailout that is widely unpopular with their constituents. Take a moment to write your congressman and let them know you want a better plan. Use the link below:
I have a friend coming up this weekend that is planning on riding the
Cannel on Saturday and JO/WR/DF on Sunday.
If anyone is interested let me know and I can hook you guys up. There
is a private shuttle driver (limited) already arranged on Sat.
Check out the Bionocon Kern valley gathering. It was sweet last year
and not only is it free you even get free bbq one night in Keysville.
