Forest Service to Begin Prescribed Burning On the West Plateau
Kernville, CA., September 26, 2008... Fire crews plan to begin ignitions within the West Plateau prescribed fire project commencing October 1, 2008.
The project area is located near Big Meadow and Cannell Meadow, approximately 20 miles northeast of Kernville. Between 500 to 1,000 acres are scheduled for burning this year, as part of an ongoing prescribed burning program.
The objective of this prescribed burn is to re-introduce fire to its natural role in the forest under a controlled setting. The prescribed fire will reduce fuels and improve wildlife habitat.
Firefighters will use hand-held drip torches to ignite the prescribed fire. Fire Managers will continue to work closely with the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District to monitor smoke production and minimize impacts to the community.
Smoke from the burn operation will be visible from most of the communities around Lake Isabella and the Kennedy Meadows area. Temporary road and trail closures may occur in and near the vicinity of the prescribed burn operations.
Prescribed burn efforts will continue as weather conditions, resources and air quality permit.
For further information, please contact Jim Yearwood, Fuels Management Officer, at the Kernville Ranger Station, (760) 376-3781, extension 622.
