Hoping this summer has not hit all of you hard but rather with vigor and good training. It has been a while but I hope we can re-establish contact and the sharing of karate news and info. Drop me a line if you wish and ask any questions you wish as if I don't have the answer I will direct you to the source that might have it. Best Regards!
Things are very busy in the UK as I tidy up in readiness for my visit to North Carolina.. A long awaited visit and one I am thoroughly looking forward too.

I have been working on the next ISKK workshop and researching hidden weapons and their use in kata... Other than that normal 6 to 7 days a week teaching and training in between times. Studying more kata skills and have done a little seito matsumura bo which I wish to continue as the opportunity arises.

Finally if I could get everyone to simply give a hello in the group that would be great.

It has been a while since we have heard from each other but I wanted to
say hello and hope that everyone is doing well and your training is
progressing. If you are looking for growth then train and study as
much as possible. I am a member of the ISKK(International Seito
Karate Kyokai) Shihankai and it is a growing society of Karate-ka who
research and study the art of Karate-do of Japan. I would implore you
to consider it's membership and the benefits to be had.
If you want to know more, feel free to email me and I will discuss it
with you. In the meantime take care everyone and I hope to hear from
you each as we move through the new year, 2008!

I hope this year brings everyone a little closer and finds everyone
able to improve their skills with continuous ongoing training.

The "Martial Arts Friends" web site is designed to help people of all martial arts get to know each other on a more personal level than possible on online discussion groups and web sites. The personal profile pages allow individuals to present their martial arts background, as well as other dimensions of their life, such as family, career, interests, endeavors, philosopy, etc. This is also a "community" so that people will be able to interact with each other, conducting dialogue publicly or privately. This is a community that will continue to evolve, based on needs and desires.
Hello Members of the KOJF forum.
I am dropping you a note to inform you of the upcoming Tournament
on Jan 13th 2007 in Louisville, Kentucky USA. It will be a "Shobu
Ippon" style tournament. Please feel free to contact me directly or
Melvin Lewis sensei for further information, an electronic flyer and
registration form if you are interested.
On another note I wanted to thank those who came to the KOJF Hombu
in Cincinnati this past Saturday for the seminar on the katas Hakutsuru
(white crane) and Chikin Sanakake no Ekudi(oar kata). From all the
feedback everyone had fun and took home a lot of information. I look
forward to the next seminar and seeing everyone once more with the
thirst to learn and improve their karate & kobudo knowledge.
With the oncoming Holiday/Holyday season upon us I wish everyone a
safe and pleasant season and look forward to hearing from you soon.
Humbly,

Hi Mike-san,
I believe "Shotokan training" is merely a concept, not a tangible entity. It
is the practitioners who make a style. So we might ask ourselves do Shotokan
practitioners practice bunkai, kyusho jutsu, nage waza and so on... Some do
and others do not. Do Shotokan kata still hold the techniques of locking,
choking, and throwing as well as punching and kicking? Absolutely. In our
modern world, though, such practices have taken a back seat to sport karate.
Even the "DO" or way of karate ,as envisioned by the founders of modern ryuha,
is being lost as sport takes over.
Modern kumite deals in a punch/ kick/ block matrix and few venture outside of
this. Therefor, most bunkai we see today deals with defense against a reverse
punch and front kick. Of course, self defense originally dealt with many kinds
of attacks and potential strategies against those atttacks. If it was meant to
deal only with a single attacker engaged in a challange match, then there would
be no need for kata. Tai boxing is proof of this.
Thanks,
Tyler

I was not taught pressure point or bunkai (just some simple uses) up to Shodan but then went further afield and studied with others sensei.. that is where I learned the Kyusho, Nage waza etc... I now hold Sandan grade and feel that I now have a reasonable understanding of the breadth of what Shotokan was intended to include. I learn continuously and question things like this.. good to hear others do the same.
In my clubs I do teach as broad a system as I can and do include the 9 throwing techniques as part of our grading syllabus along with pressure points and the TCM meridians. We also use tsukami drills to teach locking and staying in contact with the opponent.

Hello Everyone,
I am curious if shotokan training involves the kata bunkai, spacificly the pressure point striking, joint locks and throws?
In the normal training it does and should involve kata bunkai but I
have found that most dojo do not teach bunkai with great depth rather
the simple, "this is a down block against a kick or punch" and
usually that is the end all.
With intense and continued research over the past 42 yrs of study I
in my dojo teach not only bunkai(application), but oyo(close quarter
combat) and Kakushite waza(hidden hand techniques) as well as tuite
(pressure points). My book recently published, "The Hidden Secrets
of Karate-do" talk about and shows some of this.
I of course try to teach more than simply block the kick and step
forward with oi-zuki(lunge punch) to counter. I am finding that
more and more sensei are indeed starting to realize it is not enough
to simply teach what I call, "kyu waza"(basic level applications) but
must educate themselves and their deshi(students).
Kata holds untold secrets to combat and incredible applications. If
you are ever in Cincinnati please feel free to visit with us to get a
slightly different view of kata from our training.
I hope that answers your question to some degree. Advanced level
sensei will teach more than simply block and punch in Shotokan.(I
hope).
Humbly,
Dwight Holley

thanks and have nice day.
Mike,
My suggestion might be Aikido as it maintains the traditional values of Japan and Budo. Just a suggestion.
Take care.

That would sound like a wonderful Idea. Unfortunately I am deployed to
Iraq at the moment (AGAIN!!!!) and will not be back until Septemberish next year. I have been overly laxed in training prior to deployment. Spending time with my family seemed more important. I feel guilty that I have not talked to Dacosta Sensei in a long time. I miss my favorite teacher and friend.
Where I am at (CampVictory) there are actually several people that teach various styles of martial arts (No Shotokan though) So I will explore the various style here to keep in shape. They offer Tae Kwon Do, Sambo (Russian Wrestling), Aikido, Jujitsu, and Muay Thai kickboxing.
Peace and Blessings on you all,

Hello everyone,
I wanted to touch base with everyone and say first of all hello.
Next I wanted to see of those who might still training if you would be
interested in going to Las Vegas next Autumn to the Funakoshi
Association World Championships. I have been there several times and
find it a very good tournament in the traditional sense and lots of fun
to attend. Normally from 600 to over a 1,000 competitors from 15 to 20
countries and primarily Shotokan stylist. I would like to go as a
large group so if any one is interested let me know.
Tenatively the Japan trip is scheduled for April 5th to the 15th
2007 until further notice. Plans will begin to form over the next 90
days or right after Christmas.
