*Hello sensei, My referance would be first off using or obtaining H.
Kanazawa's books on Kata and kumite.  He has two on Kata as a set and
a third part of the set that works on Kumite.  He also has another
book I just acquire thanks to my wife on kumite.  I will have to look
at it again to give you the exact name.  Then there is Tanaka's book
on kumite.  Also Tanaka's video, "The Legend".  I have that in
Japanese and English if you want a copy of the English version.  Hope
that helps a little.
Take care.

Things are good. I had to drop out of the Phd program because my
future is kind of unsure. I have been offered a Special Agent
position with the US Treasury department and pending a background
check and physical I will be leaving for federal law enforcement
training. The training would be for 6 months and then I would start
work so I am not sure how long my Phd will be delayed.

My parents are doing well. My father works for the joint cheifs of
staff now in the Pentagon. He is retired but still working for the
military. He travels back and forth between DC and Florida.

Once everything settles down I plan to travel up to Ohio, and I am
looking forward to checking out a local dojo that I had mentioned to
you before, but I have to wait because things are hectic right now I
just continue practicing on my own.

It was great hearing from you and hope to see you as well in the
close future.

Your friend and student,
Billy

Just a quick introduction, and or reminder. I trained with Sensei
Lewis (hiya Mel!!) during an oh so brief stay working at the U of L.
Lucy and I still have alot of good memories of Louisville. Anyway
lost touch a bit so are trying to get back in touch...Still training
and managed to find some Kobudo instructors (which are few and far
between in the UK), so those weapons I got off Sensei West aren't
gathering dust any more. Good to see some of the old faces still
going from strength to strength

A little story I found, although some of you might have heard it.
A man of Tao and a Little Man as it is told. A student once
asked,"What is the difference between a man of Tao, and a little
man? The master replies "It is simple: When the little man receives
his first dan, he can hardly wait to run home and tell everyone he
made his first dan. Upon receiving his second dan, he will climb to
the roof and shout to the people. Upon receiving his third dan, he
will jump in his automobile and parade through town with its horn
blowing telling everyone about it".
Sensei continues: When the man of Tao receives his first dan, he
will bow his head and his shoulders. Upon receiving his second dan,
he will bow his head and his shoulders. Upon receiving his third
dan, he will bow at the waist and quitely walk alongside the wall so
people will not see him or notice him".
Funakoshi sensei was a man of Tao. He placed no emphasis on
competitions or records. Instead, he emphasized self perfection.
Jeff sans Conclusion: I guess this story goes to show that there
are alot of people training in the Martial Arts for different
reasons, sometimes some being bad. We can all train to be the best
we can be, but the difference lies between who is humble and who is
not. I'm really impressed with the Shotokan style of karate and I'm
excited and honored to be taught by such great teachers.

Thank you, I was not aware of master Ason's involvement in this kata. I would be interested in seeing the full Ason Naihanchi as a matter of my education.

At present I still teach the Shotokan Tekki kata to my junior students as that is the most common form used in competitions around here. Personally, I prefer the naihanchi dachi and the less exaggerated techniques of it compared to Tekki.

The stance I find very good for unbalancing opponents and have also been told that in some ryu (Higa Sensei? ) they also practice it in a circle. It does suit the older knee joints better and also allows for better mobility, IMO.

My base style is Shotokan and I will remain true to the style as a basis but find studying the variations of karate extremely interesting and educational.

In the case of Naihanchi, I have found it helpful in close quarters grappling scenario's, particularly when employed with strikines to the vulnerable areas.

On the topic of the opening hand position, I must fully agree.. Many are not intended to have appllications but various karateka make them up to show a use for the 'move'. The Tekki example can be used against a wrist/lower arm grab, where you clamp the 'grabbing' hand and step across unbalancing your opponent. You could then use the completion of the step across to strike the attacker with your knee.

However, on the topic of Bunkai/Oyo, I feel the important thing is the principles and not the interpretation of techniques as any good 'move' must have mor ethan one application, IMO.

I have some pictures of Funakoshi performing Tekki and he does use a Naihanchi dachi so I guess this was one of the migrationary steps between Naihanchi and Tekki as it is performed today.

Thanks you for that additional information and if you do come across a video clip of pictures of the full Naihanchi, I would be interested to view them.

Back to practice.

Regards

Malcolm

Hello sir, My first thought is ask that you retain the knowledge of
the Shotokan version of Tekki first regardless of what other styles
of the kata you may practice.  I will address the idea
of "bunkai"(applications) and "Oyo"(close quarter fighting) in my
forthcoming book called "The Hidden Secrets of Karate-do".  In the
meantime let me say that the "hand over hand" has more of
a "salutory" meaning than an aactual application.  Many kata are
derived from Chinese origins of longer kata or forms and some pay
homeage to the founder or his teacher.  Remember that karate kata
tend to begin with a defensive movement to reinforce the idea that
karate is for self defense and not aggression or "first attacks."  If
you look at many of the Chinese kata you will see sometime
elaborate "seals" or "opening movements" out of reverance, homeage,
or a way to denote a particular school or "ryuha."   I am sure I can
find a "application" for the Shotokan Tekki opening move where the
hands or ontop of each other, but sometimes the obvious is there and
we simply overlook it.  (Can't see the forest for the trees) Does
this come to mind? Heehee!   Some systems using the same kata will
provide their own interpetation which relates to their train of
thought or training.  This is fine.  Tekki has been linked to
the "Naha-Te" of Okinawa origin but further than that has some
Chinese links.  I will supply the following for more info:........

The original name of the Tekki Kata is Naihanchi.  It is the name for
the Kata, which was brought by master Ason from China to Okinawa.
Ason was one the most important Karateka in Naha.

The special thing at Naihanchi was that it is executed only on a
line.  It was used to teach pupils fighting at smallest space.  Thus
it was executed for example on narrow beams or trees, where it is not
possible to move forward or backward.  The aim was also to strengthen
the stance anyway on which background you move.  In addition the
masters invented many exercise forms.  The stance of the Ason
Naihanchi was Naihanchi Dachi.  The Ason Naihanchi consisted of over
100 movements!
Under Itosu the Kata was separated into three parts, the Naihanchi
Shodan, Nidan and Sandan.  Also the essence of the Kata changed.  The
stance was not any more Naihanchi Dachi, but Kiba Dachi. The emphasis
has been shifted, which changed for example the energy flow,
particularly as the Kiba Dachi became broader in the course of the
time.

In Japan the Kata was renamed to Tekki.

Funakoshi practicing
Tekki Shodan

The three Tekki Kata were the Kata, which mastered Funakoshi first.
But he needed ten years, while he daily practiced only this Kata.
Still today there are masters, who attaches particular the importance
of number of the repetitions.  They have the opinion that your should
show the Kata just after approximately 10,000 repetitions.

Greetings to Shihan Holley and Members

I am a 51 year old UK resident who started practicing Shotokan at the age of 39, so a bit of a late starter. I have consistantly trained and actively participate in my teaching since starting my studies. To keep my skills developing I subscribe to the ShotoJournal produced by Bob mcMahon of the AKA and study the techniques of Kissaki-kai under Vince Morris. I also train with  Wado , Goju and Aikido instructors on an infrequent basis to help understand the broader aspects of karate and the martial arts as a whole.

Sensei Vince Morris awarded my most recent grade (Nidan). Having decided to 'semi retire' from management consultancy this year, I have been able to spend more time sharing my karate knowledge with others as well as developing my own skills. To this end I now have 5 clubs in operation and my first interclub competition scheduled for october 10th.

My role as European Coordinator within ISOK is a challenging one and I have conducted 4 workshops in the past year, in an effort to pull similar minded karateka into a group of sharinging with a focus on only covering costs and not over commercialising our learning process. This has been achieved with the help of several generous senior instructors who share my philosophy.

I am married with a 17 year old son...

Thank you for the opportunity to join this group and  I hope to positively contribute to its evolution.

Regards

Malcolm Bates

I have recently added this kata to my adult club syllabus as I feel the applications are more effective than in the Shto version (Tekki). I was taught the kata by a Wado ryu instructor and his interpretation of applications parallels very well with the self defence style karate that I teach at one of my clubs.

The version I was taught starts with the raising of the hands similar to Kanuku dai, the across steps do not use the old axe kick (as I was taught in Tekki) or the knee strike but uses the step across as a strike to the inner thigh. There is also a look left and right befor ethe step across which we interpret as a head butt.

Can anyone point me to a source of this kata, ideally a video clip as I would like to teach the proper performance elements as well as the applications I understand. Having checked the Wado websites I have drawn a blank.

I look forward to some pointers and discussion on this kata.

Hello,

The moderator of the cincinnatishotokan group has changed the group's name.
This means that both the group's email address and the group home page
location have changed.

The group email address:
KOJF@yahoogroups.com

The group home page location:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/KOJF

If you have links which point to this group or an address book entry
for the group, you should update them, as the old addresses will no
longer work.

As for me I like it.  Maybe in March 2005 (6 mos away)we can get a
chance to see it first hand. Yeah!  This time we will hook up I pray.
Hoping your wife is comfortable as you move towards fatherhood by the
way!   I do like your "Makiwara!"

hey there, i just wanted to be the first to jump in and kind of get things going
here. i
thought i'd post a picture of the makiwara i built in my backyard here in
Yamanashi, Japan
for everyone to check out and give their opinions of.

the photo is in the photos section here in the folder called "dan's makiwara"

please forgive the low quality of the pic, since it was taken with my cell
phone. it's raining
right now otherwise i'd go take a better one with my digital camera.

let me know your thoughts.

take care!
