Just checking in on everyone to see how the year is shaping up with
everyone and how your karate-do training is going? Hello Chuck-
san!!! Good to hear from you via the group!!!!
Hope this note finds you well and drop me a personal note sensei so
we can talk about another visit to Cincinnati!!!
Everyone drop me a note!
KOJF ( Karate of Japan Federation ) is now a member of WUKO ( World
Union of Karate-do Organization ). If you go to the WUKO website
you will see in the newsletter KOJF listed as a new member and
accepted as such. This is a huge move for us in the Hombu.
Anyway my book is selling well: "Hidden Secrets of Karate-do" and I
have begun to work on my next book project regarding kata as well as
planning for a companion DVD to the first book.
For now....I hope this finds everyone training hard and learning
much!
Humbly, just me.
What an interesting question!
You know, a lot of times, things aren't what they seem.
You can dream of going to Japan or France, Etc, and when you finally
go there, it's not exactly what you expected...sometimes better,
sometimes worse, but always different. The same can be said about
a lot of things in life; married life, for instance, is never exactly
like you thought it would be. Or the military lifestyle. Or high
school, or retirement....or karate! When I was about 10, I wanted
to learn how to beat up a 12 year old bully, and I thought the
martial arts was the answer...neat...I would learn a couple moves,
break a brick & beat up a bully. Now, 4 1/2 decades later, it wasn't
what I thought it would be. I didn't know it would involve changing
the person that I was, and I didn't know It would involve making
lots of new friends, traveling, etc etc. a persons' original
REASON to practice martial arts might remain (self defense,
physical fitness, Etc), but it's like going on a trip; you know
the destination, but the route varies, and the process of getting
there ends up being the main point!

I personally chose mental clarity because I am a student of Martial
Philosophy as well and therefore Martial Arts is a physical expression of
a deeper ideal for myself personally. I study Bushido, Zen, and other
philosophies of Funakoshi, Bruce Lee, David Lowry, and some Ki
philosophers. For me, this is the whole package, a melding of the
physical and the psychological, the body and the soul, the mind and the
heart, into one complete entity through physical and mental discipline
and study.

No problem at all. I believe there can be ENDLESS reasons to study
karate, or in your position, Teach karate. Its just nice to see
the "statistics" on why people study karate.
There are complete benefits from karate one can receive. While
gaining physical fitness, stamina, alertness, balance, etc, as well
as discipline and character, one can benefit by having mental
clarity and satisfaction.
Even after 10 hour work day, checking the mail to find piles of
bills, and other daily life issues, i enter the dojo and forget
about everything. It allows my bodys chemicals to relax, and my
emotions to fade away. I think anyone practicing karate will easily
find the benefits of karate such as physical fitness, etc. But those
who truely have a passion for karate are the ones that empty out
their days problems while focusing and meditating on karate.
But, what do i know, these are just MY opinions.
I am proud, and yet humble, to be a student of Sensei Holley, and
his dojo. I find nothing more rewarding than entering the dojo and
being at peace with myself.
Thanks!

Its a basic question, simple
It would be great to see why most people take karate!
The most rewarding benefit to me is seeing other people achieve things but I appreciate that is from a teacher perspective. I get great satisfaction form the smile on a child's face when they learn something or the satisfied and excited look in an adults eyes when they realise that 'even they' can perform techniques they though were only for the young or on film. :)
Maybe this is a sign of aging (read getting old) but I have entered my opinion on the poll and see that it was the same as the previous person.. coincidence..
Will be interesting to see the final results.

Please take a look and consider it as a study group to enhance and growth your karate-do. I am a member of the "Shihankai" which will review prospective members and their
qualitfications for membership. It is a traditional based association with seniors as board members with legitimate historys.
Also take a look at my website under links and view the WTKA link of which I was appointed United States Head Coach fielding a team to the World Championships in Italy in Sept. So you see I have a very busy plate from which I serve you and others. Please bare with me as I try to enhance your lives with my small experience and knowledge of this art we so love....Karate-do. I finally have confirmation of the seminar with the senior instructors of the Ryukyu Kobudo Hozon Shinko Kai (also other RKHSK instructors and Dan grades from Japan, UK and Israel) to be hosted by the Chikara Karate Kai, in the Wirral UK later this year.
We are hosting a 1 day course held on the 15th of October at the Oval Sports Centre, Bebington. The program has yet to be finalised but I think work will be mainly based on Bo and Sai.
Cost will be £25 for the day.
Numbers are limited by the size of the hall so early booking will be needed as we expect his seminar to be popular. I am in the process of arranging a discount deal with a nearby hotel if accomodation is needed.
If anyone wants further info full course details will be posted on our club website www.chikarakarate.org.uk or you can contact me directly for info / bookings etc
Take a look at the links on the cincinnatishotokan.com website and the
bottom link has some interesting information and downloadable kata and
other video information that might be of interest as you have time.
The WTKA International website is also listed to visit. Both pretty
interesting indeed.
Enjoy!
Humbly your friend through karate-do,
Dwight Holley
I thought I would drop everyone a note to take a look at another yahoo
group and see if you might be interested in getting involved as it is
a part of a "new" organization that I sit on the board of and is
headed into the direction of which most of us are looking in regards
to preserving the old ways of karate study and embracing what is new.
The people/sensei's that I have become involved with are credible and
knowledgeble. Take a look and see if you might want to consider the
benefits of membership, if not now, maybe in the future.
www.seitokarate.com is the website.

Hello everyone, Check out the link I am placing on the "Links" for the WTKA as well as the one on my website under "links". Really nice website.
Also please start your planning if you are interested in taking the trip with us to Japan next year in late March '07. Figure at this point you will need about $750 for plane, $400 for hotel, $250 for food and train transportation. From there it is what you will have to shop and explore you figure you will want to spend. I think these numbers are a good estimate. Please contact me if you are interested and I will put you on the list. The plane fair I should have a good idea of a more solid price by say, November, December or no later than
January.
Have a great day!
