What an interesting question!
You know, a lot of times, things aren't what they seem.
You can dream of going to Japan or France, Etc, and when you finally
go there, it's not exactly what you expected...sometimes better,
sometimes worse, but always different. The same can be said about
a lot of things in life; married life, for instance, is never exactly
like you thought it would be. Or the military lifestyle. Or high
school, or retirement....or karate! When I was about 10, I wanted
to learn how to beat up a 12 year old bully, and I thought the
martial arts was the answer...neat...I would learn a couple moves,
break a brick & beat up a bully. Now, 4 1/2 decades later, it wasn't
what I thought it would be. I didn't know it would involve changing
the person that I was, and I didn't know It would involve making
lots of new friends, traveling, etc etc. a persons' original
REASON to practice martial arts might remain (self defense,
physical fitness, Etc), but it's like going on a trip; you know
the destination, but the route varies, and the process of getting
there ends up being the main point!
