It sounds as if that may be the case. when the chain is on the
smalles gear on the front and back, it should be taunt just off the
cog on the derailleur. in turn, with them on the big gears on both
front and back, the derailleur should just be extended out but not
straight. If you need to break the chain, get a fast link to
reconnect. It is easier to remove for cleaning also.
