Forget how much the trike weighs. Its not about the bike its about the ride.
I believe if you have the legs, lungs and heart you can make any bike go fast. I
think your weight and condition matters more than the bikes weight.
On my MTB riding the same trails I typically average around 10-11mph. Yesterday
on the tike, first time out, I averaged 8-9mph. Yesterday I went slow on trials
I normally would fly down because I did not know how the trike would handle. So
I think my speed will increase. Will I get my 10-11 back? I think its more a
matter of how comfortable I feel with the handling of the trike versus the
weight.
I think you need to be clear about why you ride. I ride a lot of road on my ABTT
with my brother inlaw who is DFer and very agressive. On his solo rides he can
get upto 18mph average (not going to happen in my dreams). He trains hard. I on
the other hand go out for some exrecise and mostly for enjoyment. I just love to
be out and riding. In the begining I used to try and keep up with him on the
road. I realized that was a futile attempt. So now he either goes ahead of me
and waits (especially on those steep hills where I am huffing and puffing at
3mph) till I catch up or he slows down to match my speed. Nice guy. So I think
you need to figure out how the group will react if you go slower and decide from
there. If they are a decent set of folks like my brother inlaw they will adjust
to you. After all it is about the group ride, isn't it? Also my brother inlaw
loves to ride with me becuase he says its like riding with a naked woman.
Everyone stops to stare. I even have had people video tape me as I rode by. He
just laughs his head off.
Cheers!!
