Hey KCNR,

In honor of David Bryant's Birthday & Flag Day and due to the fact that it is starting to get really warm & humid in the mornings, let's plan on starting our summer Sunday runs at 7:00am beginning this Sunday - June 14th. It will allow us to take advantage of the cooler temps early. Great job, to all of you that ran Hospital Hill last weekend!!! Ron, Tom, Dan & myself (and Riley too) enjoyed cheering you all on, up Broadway hill!!!=o)

I would also like to start getting some volunteers to sign of for drink duty for after the Sunday runs. Thanks!!

Congrats to all finishers of this years Hospital Hill!! The one year it's not unbearbly hot and I choose not to run!

It was nice to see our friends and chear them on near the 12 mile mark though... didn't see any tigers! nor did we have to kick anyone in the ... to get them to the finish line. Had no takers on the beer either. Not sure if it was the cool temperatures or the uniformed crossing guard??

David,

We meet at Macken Park in North KC on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Some show up as early as 5 and do a lap or two around the running path at the park. The run starts from the parking lot on the south side of the park off Clark Ferguson Drive, east of the tennis courts. We try and leave around 5:30. We have several routes that we run. It's a group decision each time as to the route that is taken that evening.

The park is at the corner of Howell Street and Clark Ferguson Drive in North KC. This is just north and west of I35 and Armour.

Email or call if you need further instructions.

Thanks,

Dan.

Good morning all... Thanks Tom for replying to Jeff.

Yes, the KC Northland Runners are an active group. We still run on Tues and Thur
evening after work about 5:30. Sunday mornings for the next couple of weeks is
at 8AM (West side of the park near the restrooms). Once it gets warmer we will
push the start time on Sunday mornings to 7AM. I'll post a comment about that
when the time comes.

Sorry about being lax with the postings. We have never been much on web chatter.
This site has primarily been for information for new potential members. We are
in the midst of discussing and coming up with a new, more functional web site...
more later.

Thanks,

Dan.

It looks like photos or posts haven't been made to this group since 2007. Is this still an active group? It looks like new members are being added (including myself), just not a lot of activity on the boards.

I just want to make sure that if I show up at Macken Park , people will actually be there. :)

Ronald-

If you could spend 2 minutes sending an email to MoDOT, encouraging
them to include good on-road bicycle accommodations on a major road
widening project, I would appreciate it.

There is a very short fuse on this (only now until Friday) and to
make an impression on this issue we are going to need a LOT of
responses quickly--at least 100 and preferably over 200:

http://mobikefed.org/Route150

The issue is this:

MoDOT is widening Hwy 150 from Grandview to Lee's Summit. This is
just south of the Longview Lake area.

Hwy 150 will become a 4-lane road with 11-foot lanes, no shoulder.

We have talked and talked with MoDOT about including on-street
bicycle facilities.

In the end they had a "budget crunch" and the on-street bicycle
facilities will be omitted.

Instead, they will apply for Enhancements funds to build a "trail"
alongside the road on one side. Also they want to post "share the
road" signs for on-road bicyclists, who they know will, by the design
of the project, be using the full right-hand lane.

Not coincidentally, the Enhancements funds available will not even be
enough to complete the entire "trail" (3 communities, each can apply
for $500,000 in Enhancements funding--that's not enough to pave the
entire trail).

Each end of the project is already built up--neighborhoods,
commercial areas, etc. Within a few decades they are projecting
complete infill. So this will essentially become another urban
arterial. And ANOTHER urban arterial in KC with no bicycle
accommodations:

http://mobikefed.org/Route150

One reason thing we are letting MoDOT know how we feel about this
project, is there are several others around the region and around the
state that are in a similar situation-- for instance, the upcoming Hwy
45 project.

We would like to work towards the time when MoDOT automatically
includes good bicycle accommodations on ALL projects--wherever they
are built. They won't start doing this unless citizens start asking
for it:

http://mobikefed.org/Route150

If you enjoy commuting on Bannister, College Blvd, 63rd Street,
Independence Ave., North Oak Trafficway, and similar multi-lane busy
roads in the metro area--that's what 150 Hwy will become. Just
another of our typical high-speed, high-traffic major streets with no
particular on-road bicycle accommodation.

Incidentally they haven't thought at all about how to deal with
intersections/traffic signals on the bicycle 'trail'/sidepath and
didn't even realize it was an issue.

Again, there is a short fuse on this--they are only accepting
comments to be part of their official record of the recent public
meeting until Friday, March 10th.

http://mobikefed.org/Route150

Thank you! Letting MoDOT know how you feel about these projects
really *does* make a difference.
