Despite the automated reminder (which I forgot to change!), there is
no testing in August. It is standard that August is the one month we
skip testing. Also, this month we are doing some remodeling upstairs
and other work at the school that we hope to have finished in
September.

I'll take this opportunity to make a few other announcements:

Price Increase:

If you have been to the school recently, you have probably seen the
notice about our new prices. Starting September 1st, a small price
increase of $5 will go into effect for regular Kung Fu, Kids Kung Fu
and Tai Chi. The new prices will be $75, $60 and $55 per month
respectively. The increase will only affect the first family member,
so no family will have more than a $5 per month increase. This is
the first time we have raised prices for these programs and the
increase will help cover our higher costs (electricity being a big
one!)

Wong Tournament Results:

Lane Greer led the medal count with a gold for Taiji Straight Sword,
a silver for Double Daggers, a bronze for sparring, a bronze for
Shaolin Fist, a bronze for two-man weapons set with Jose in Spear vs
Double Broadswords, and a bronze for two-man fighting set with Billy
in TuJi.

Billy Greer received silver for sparring, bronze for long staff, and
bronze for two-man fighting set with Lane in TuJi.

Jose Vega received bronze for sparring, bronze for Double
Broadsword, and bronze for two-man weapons set with Lane in Spear vs
Double Broadswords.

Tim Cherry received bronze for 12 Kicks and bronze for Crazy Devil
Staff. After his staff performance, a judge told Tim that he had
first place locked up until his staff got caught on his pants leg at
the very end of his routine, and the small deduction moved him down
in the tight competition.

Glen Greer made a strong showing with his performance of 12 Kicks,
but was put out of medal contention by Tim.

Glen Greer and Lane Greer were the recipients of special "Wong
People" trophies that recognized certain teens for their dedication
to Kung Fu in the past year.

Our showing was especially strong when you consider that all of our
students were competing at the advanced level which means they often
were competing against instructors from other schools as well as
students with 3 to 5 times as many years of experience (or more!)
Tim is the only member of our team who has studied Kung Fu at Jing
Ying for much more than three years, and the advanced level is for
students with three years or more of experience with no upper limit.

Many thanks also to the students who did not compete but came out to
support us at the tournament!

TaiJi Seminar in November:

Mark your calendars now! Jing Ying Institute has been added to the
US Tour of Master Wang HaiJun. He is the top disciple of Master Chen
ZhengLei and has trained with him since going to live with him at
the age of 9. You can see him in many of the Chen ZhengLei
instructional DVDs. Master Wang has won dozens of gold medals in
national competition in China for push-hands, TaiJi sword and TaiJi
boxing. He is an excellent teacher. You can read about him at:

We will have a weekend seminar on November 18 & 19 from 10:00 am to
5:00 pm each day. The seminar will help you Learn/Review/Refine Silk
Reeling and Lao Jia YiLu. This workshop is suitable for the beginner
with no experience as well as the advanced student desiring to
refine their knowledge. Master Wang believes in structured and
systematic teaching that will give you a strong grounding in the
important fundamentals of TaiJi. This opportunity for in-depth study
with Master Wang will do much to advance your understanding of
TaiJi.

Early registration will be $195 for the full weekend or $110 for one
day.

Day and we were closed. Instead we held pre-test last Tuesday and
the makeup pre-test is today at 6:30 pm. This information has been

A reminder that Jing Ying will be doing a demonstration at the Anne
Arundel County Fair on Saturday, Sep 16 at the county fairgrounds in
Crownsville.

If you haven't already signed up to perform Lion Dance, forms, or
weapons, please sign up on the clipboard at Jing Ying or e-mail me
to say you plan to participate.

We have free, full-day passes to the county fair for participants
and at least one parent. If we have enough tickets left over, we
will provide admission for an additional parent as well. You can
also get additional admission tickets for only $5 for adults or $2
for 15 and under (free for 5 and under).

Tickets can be picked up at Jing Ying anytime on Saturday from 10:00
am to noon. We will leave Jing Ying at noon and some people can
share rides. If you go to the Fair directly, plan to meet us there
at 12:30. You should use the back gate entrance on Crownsville Road
to avoid delays using our passes.

The actual demonstration will be at 1:00 pm, but you will need to be
there at 12:30 pm so we can assign the order of performances. I will
send an additional e-mail with the specific location of our
demonstration and will have the information available on Saturday
when you pick up your passes.

Originally, we were making plans to go as a group to the opening of Fearless
this Friday.

However, plans have now changed. Instead of going to the movie theater, we
are bringing the movie theater to Jing Ying! We will have a pizza party with
drinks while we enjoy a private screening of Fearless on a big screen
projector.

Fearless is Jet Li's latest movie and he says it will be his last martial
arts epic. It's based on the true story of the founder of the Jing Wu
school. "Fearless" describes the life of Huo Yuanjia from his eagerness to
fight as a child to his mastery of the martial arts as an adult. As a child,
his ultimate dream was to become the number 1 fighter in his town, but his
quest for proving his superiority comes at great personal cost. After many
years away from fighting, Huo Yuanjia comes to terms with his martial art
skill and realizes its true responsibility and power. This movie is PG13 for
kung fu violence so use your discretion. We ask that children under 11 be
accompanied by an adult.

Cost will be $3 per person. Please let us know if you plan to attend and
indicate your preference for cheese, mushroom, or pepperoni pizza (sorry,
those are the only three choices) for each person. You will be able to have
more than one kind of pizza, but we want to make sure we order the right
quantities of each type. We will also provide soda, juice and water.

This is a little off topic, but our good friend, Dr Daohe Fang on Old
Solomons Rd (near Annapolis Harbour Place, Whole Foods area) needs some
office help. The person would take phone calls, make appointments, take
payments, check insurance benefits and more. No experience is needed and
training would be provided.

Dr Fang (pronounced more like "fong") is an excellent acupuncturist and
Chinese herbalist, so this could be a good opportunity for someone with an
interest in those areas. He previously had a Jing Ying student work for him
and was very impressed, so he is definitely willing to hire another
(although being a student is not a requirement). Starting pay would be about
$10.00 per hour.

He would prefer to find a full-time replacement in the next week, but will
consider part-time as well. His office hours are:

Network (SPAN). Jing Ying Institute will be doing a silent auction
fundraiser for SPAN later this year but it will be after these tickets
expire. So, we have decided to sell them now with the funds going to SPAN.

September 29. On Saturday, we will contact the winning bidder and ask that
you pick up the tickets at Jing Ying (you can do so as early as Saturday
morning, September 30 or schedule a time later in the week). You will be

A reminder that our "sister" school, Silk Dragon Martial Arts in Towson

this weekend. A brochure is posted on the bulletin board. $85 for Friday and

We will have testing on Saturday, October 28 at 11:00 am. Testing will be
followed by our kick-a-thon for St Jude Children's Hospital. Sign up to

in November.

Master Wang HaiJun will be at the Jing Ying Institute of Kung Fu & Tai Chi
in November for an in-depth workshop on Silk Reeling and Lao Jia Yi Lu or
Old Frame I.

Students will have the opportunity for in-depth practice of Lao Jia Yi Lu
and Silk Reeling exercises. Lao Jia Yi Lu is the foundation form that the
other major styles of Tai Chi (TaiJi) are derived from, so this workshop
will be especially appropriate for students of other styles of TaiJi as well
as those specifically interested in Chen-Style. All levels can participate
as beginners will have the opportunity to learn the form, while intermediate
and advanced students can review and refine their movements. Future
workshops will build on the skills taught in this workshop.

When: Saturday, Nov 18 and Sunday Nov 19 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm with a
break for lunch.

This Saturday is our monthly test. We encourage you to come out and support
the students who are testing. It's a great opportunity to preview what might
be expected of you for your next test and to see demos by other students and
instructors this month. Testing will start at 11:00 am. But wait - there's
more! We are also having a kick-a-thon and our Halloween Party.

We hope you are participating in the kick-a-thon this Saturday to help raise
money for St Jude Children's Hospital. We plan to do 500 kicks. If you are
not participating as a kicker, we hope you will consider being a sponsor
with a pledge per kick or a flat donation. The kick-a-thon is part of our
Halloween party which you are invited to attend. We will have a costume
contest (children or adults - no super scary costumes please), games, face
painting, activities, prizes and more. The kick-a-thon will start around
noon and will "kick-off" the Halloween party which will last until about 2
pm.

Please bring some treats to share, some candy to give out for participating
in the games, or volunteer to spend a 30 minute block of time to run one of
