Good morning~
In order to fight SF2001, www.Bikeiowa.com has established a counter-position,
including letter templates and proposed amendments, for you to send to your
Representatives, Senators and local media.
We have all made jokes about the proposed law to this point, and now it is time
to take the threat seriously and respond with a unified message asking for
cycling safety and educational resources for health and recreation, not laws and
fines.
Please contact me with any questions!

Read on:
In the last year or so there have been 3 instances where apparently wild mountain lions (cougars or panthers - same animal) have been discovered in or near Iowa. A lion was killed on the highway near Harlan in Shelby County last year, in early October a lion was captured in a greenbelt park in downtown Omaha, and a farmer shot a lion near Ireton in northwest Iowa a couple weeks ago. All three apeared to be wild i.e. no evidence of having been in captivity (collar marks, or worn or missing claws or broken teeth from chewing on a cage, etc.). There have been other captures or killings of mountain lions in Iowa very infrequently over the past 30 years, but these had all proven to be escaped pets.
These verified sightings have spawned a host of other sightings all around Iowa, some with a degree of authenticity, others that appear to be figments of the observers imagination. But the Wildlife and Enforcement Bureaus have not been able to verify any of them. There may be a small number of other wild mountain lions in Iowa, but the fact that 175,000 deer hunters, 150,000 pheasant hunters, and 60,000 turkey hunters have not been able to produce a witnessed sighting (more than 1 person saw the animal) or shot one leads us to believe the number must be small. They have no protection under Iowa law so there would be no legal repercussions for killing one.
The rumor mill has it that the DNR has traded wild turkeys to some western state for lions and has released 10... 50... 100 wild pairs (pick a number) to control the deer herd. Some stories said we flew them here in black helicopters. Many of you are getting these kinds of questions, including some of you in bureaus and divisions that ordinarily would not hear them. To put the record straight, the wildlife bureau has not released any mountain lions in Iowa, has no plans to do so, and has not seriously discussed such an effort. Iowa is an extremely settled state with none of the wild, remote areas generally associated with the presence of cougars - places where they can survive without coming in contact with humans or their livestock too frequently. And we have a rural population that is typically paranoid about any creature not associated with corn, soybeans, cattle or hogs. While we believe that cougars could probably survive in reasonable numbers in Iowa with little danger to humans or livestock, proposing an introduction has never seemed politically viable to the Wildlife Bureau.
The few animals that have been verified were all in western Iowa and the best evidence is that cougar populations in western states are increasing and moving slowly eastward. The nearest viable populations are in Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico and the Black Hills of South Dakota. Our deer herd has increased to provide a ready food source, but at least half of a cougar's diet is tyupically small mammals like rabbits, raccoons, etc. The main reason they are increasing in the West appears to be that animal rights groups have spearheaded a movement to reduce mountain lion trapping and hunting and their populations have increased a s a result. These population pressures may be pushing young lions further east in search of unoccuppied habitat.
Most of this is speculation based on the best, although sketchy, evidence available to wildlife departments in a number of states. The one thing we know for sure is that the DNR hasn't released any. Tell your friends - maybe we can start a counter rumor mill of our own.
The VEISHEA race directors have posted this press release regarding their
events.
